  • Is the WCF REST Starter Kit dead in the water?

    We are looking at switching from using WCF for our service layer in applications to REST. So far we are assuming that the way to do this is to use the WCF REST Starter Kit. However this is still in Preview 2 and hasn't been updated since March 2009. Is this project dead in the water? If so, what alternatives do we have for creating .NET-based REST services? (Some are suggesting using ASP.NET MVC, which we're already using for our UI layer)

  • Creating a floating button

    Hey all, I'm working on a Firefox extension and am out of ideas on how to implement a floating button. I need a button that is overlayed on my page that I can show/hide and dynamically position just about anywhere on my page. I thought I could do something like a fancy CSS tool-tip except replace it with button functionality, but that idea failed because I couldn't pull my example apart well enough to understand what all I need to include, need to change, etc. I've thought about using jQuery(though wouldn't mind avoiding, unless it makes this painfully easy) but will be looking more into that as a possibility now. If anyone can offer a tutorial link, ideas, sample code, anything to help get me moving in the right direction I will greatly appreciate it! Thanks! Edit: Clarification I'm not entirely sure how to actually create the overlayed button. I tried to create a a floating div with some text in it, and nothing showed up, but I got no errors, which means I'm doing something wrong, but I have no idea what that is. http://www.fijiwebdesign.com/blog/css-tooltips-floating-html-elements.html If you take a look at that webpage you see that there is that floating "feedback" button, I would like to create something similar, only it wouldn't be anchored to the sides, but I could position it over text, etc. #floatingBtn { position: absolute; z-index: 10000; top: 50%; left: 50%; } Thats the CSS I used to try and float my div. I don't know if I'm creating the div in the wrong place or... I thought if I could get a floating div with some text, I could turn that into my button.

  • Missing something with Reader monad - passing the damn thing around everywhere

    Learning Haskell, managing syntax, have a rough grasp of what monads etc are about but I'm clearly missing something. In main I can read my config file, and supply it as runReader (somefunc) myEnv just fine. But somefunc doesn't need access to the myEnv the reader supplies, nor do the next couple in the chain. The function that needs something from myEnv is a tiny leaf function. So - how do I get access to the environment in a function without tagging all the intervening functions as (Reader Env)? That can't be right because otherwise you'd just pass myEnv around in the first place. And passing unused parameters through multiple levels of functions is just ugly (isn't it?). There are plenty of examples I can find on the net but they all seem to have only one level between runReader and accessing the environment.

  • packaging sequences of png files in iPhone APP for animations to reduce bundle size

    Basically, I have an application that uses a flip-book style animation technique. I am simply cycling through around 1000 320x480 pngs at 12fps, and everything works really well. Except for the fact that 1000 images takes up a ton of disk space. Ideally I'd like to be able to compress these images as a movie file and pull out each frame as I need them, or simply play back a movie with frame by frame precision. Ideas?

  • Communicate between service and winform

    I could do with a bit of help with a windows service im writing in c#. The service basically just runs various tasks on a schedule. It has 3 main sections: a class which contains everything for the task (config, code to be executed when it runs, etc), the service which contains instances of the tasks, running them on a timer and a windows form which is used to configure the settings for the task. The question I have is would it be possible to reference the service from the Winform whilst the service is running? Ultimately I want to be able to open the Winform and see a live status of what the service is currently doing. I've considered writing something network related to get around it but it didn't seem correct considering that both processes would be on the same machine.

    I was wondering if there is a library out there such that it could give me the ability to fill in word templates with custom values. For example: Following could be the content of the Word Document {Address} {PhoneNumber} Hello {Name}, How are you doing? In C# I would like to do something like this to replace all the placeholders in the Word document: using(WordDocument doc = WordDocument.Load("Mail.docx")){ var person = new {Name = "John Smith", Address="42 Wallaby Way, Sydney", PhoneNumber="555-555-5555"}; doc.Template(person); doc.Print(); } The resulting document would look like this: 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney 555-555-5555 Hello John Smith, How are you doing?     While going through some legacy code today I discovered that you can declare a C# class without placing it in a namespace (in this scenario I have an ASP.NET WebForms application and some of the web forms are not declared within any namespace). A GetType() on such a class returns a type where the namespace property is set to null. I did not know that this was allowed - can anyone suggest why it would be desirable to have a class that is not declared within a namespace?

  • Released object crashes app

    I am using objective-C++ (+Boost) for iPhone development. I am in a rather tight loop and need to allocate and release a certain object. The code is something like this. for (int i=0;i<100;i++) { opt = [[FObj alloc] init]; //do stuff with opt [opt release]; } The FObj object is something like @interface FObj MyCPPObj * cppobj; @end In the implementation of FObj there is a dealloc method: -(void) dealloc { delete cppobj; //previously allocated with 'new' [super dealloc]; } I am afraid that if i don't release then the 'MyCPPObj's will just pile up. But releasing makes the app crash after the first loop. What am I doing wrong? Or perhaps should I make cppobj and boost::shared_ptr? (do boost shared pointers automatically release their objects when an objective-C++ object is deleted?)

    I'm running MOSS 2007 and have created a new site under an existing one using sitemanager.aspx. I've done this on two machines. on one of those everything works correctly, while on the other some of the menu items for pages in the site seem to be gone. Also on the faulty site I get "Access denied" when I click "Version history". The permissions on both sites should be the same. I attach a screenshot of how the menus differ from each other. The one to the right (the faulty one) is unfortunately not in English but the items appearing on it are "Open link in a new window", "Copy", "Edit page settings" and "Version history".     I have partially ported the LuaObjCBridge to the iPhone. Most things work but there are still some issues I have to deal with. There are sections where #defines are defined with-respect-to intel or ppc. Is the ARM chip closer to intel or ppc?   • How to show useful error messages from a database error callback in Phonegap?

    Using Phonegap you can set a function to be called back if the whole database transaction or the individual SQL statement errors. I'd like to know how to get more information about the error. I have one generic error-handling function, and lots of different SELECTs or INSERTs that may trigger it. How can I tell which one was at fault? It is not always obvious from the error message. My code so far is... function get_rows(tx) { tx.executeSql("SELECT * FROM Blah", [], lovely_success, statement_error); } function add_row(tx) { tx.executeSql("INSERT INTO Blah (1, 2, 3)", [], carry_on, statement_error); } function statement_error(tx, error) { alert(error.code + ' / ' + error.message); } From various examples I see the error callback will be passed a transaction object and an error object. I read that .code can have the following values: UNKNOWN_ERR = 0 DATABASE_ERR = 1 VERSION_ERR = 2 TOO_LARGE_ERR = 3 QUOTA_ERR = 4 SYNTAX_ERR = 5 CONSTRAINT_ERR = 6 TIMEOUT_ERR = 7 Are there any other properties/methods of the error object? What are the properties/methods of the transaction object at this point? I can't seem to find a good online reference for this. Certainly not on the Phonegap website!

But the Gender input from the select drop down menu doesn't. Can some one tell me how to fix this, thanks.

    Hi, I have a Dictionary object that is formed using a double as its key values. It looks like this: Dictionary<double, ClassName> VariableName = new Dictionary<double, ClassName>(); For my project I have to have the key as the double as I require values like 1.1,1.2,2.1,2.2,etc in my system. Everything in my system works great except when I want to delete all the keys in a group eg all the 1 values would be 1.1,1.2, etc. I can delete rows if I know the full value of the key eg 1.1 but in my system I will only know the whole number. I tried to do the following but get an error: DictionaryVariable.Remove(j => Convert.ToInt16(j.Key) == rowToEdit).OrderByDescending(j => j.Key); Is there anyway to remove all rows per int value by converting the key?     Is there a better way than using array-walk in combination with unserialize? I have two arrays which contain objects. The objects can be same or can be different. I want to merge both arrays and keep only unique objects. This seems to me like a very long solution for something so trivial.   • OpenCV compare two images and get different pixels

    For some reason the code bellow is not working. I have two 640*480 images which are very similar but not the same (at least few hundred/thousand pixels should be different). This is how I am comparing them and counting different pixels: unsigned char* row; unsigned char* row2; int count = 0; // this happens in a loop // fIplImageHeader is current image // lastFIplImageHeader is image from previous iteration if ( NULL != lastFIplImageHeader->imageData ) { for( int y = 0; y < fIplImageHeader->height; y++ ) { row = &CV_IMAGE_ELEM( fIplImageHeader, unsigned char, y, 0 ); row2 = &CV_IMAGE_ELEM( lastFIplImageHeader, unsigned char, y, 0 ); for( int x = 0; x < fIplImageHeader->width*fIplImageHeader->nChannels; x += fIplImageHeader->nChannels ) { if (row[x] == row2[x]) // the pixel in the first channel (usually G) { count++; } if (row[x+1] == row2[x+1]) // ... second channel (usually B) { count++; } if (row[x+2] == row2[x+2]) // ... third channel (usually R) { count++; } } } } Now at the end I get number 3626 which would seem alright. But, I tried opening one of the images in MS Paint and drawing thick red lines all over it which should increase the number of different pixels substantially. I got the same number again: 3626. Obviously I am doing something wrong here. I am comparing these images in a loop. This line is before the loop: IplImage* lastFIplImageHeader = cvCreateImageHeader(cvSize(640, 480), 8, 3); Then inside the loop I load images like this: IplImage* fIplImageHeader = cvLoadImage( filePath.c_str() ); // here I compare the pixels (the first code snippet) lastFIplImageHeader->imageData = fIplImageHeader->imageData; So lastFIplImageHeader is storing the image from the previous iteration and fIplImageHeader is storing the current image.

    Can anybody help me with the syntax? insert into history (company,partnumber,price) values ('blah','IFS0090','0.00') if company NOT IN ('blah','blah2','blah3','blah4','blah4') and partnumber='IFS0090'; Background: I have a history table which stores daily company, products and prices. But sometimes a company will remove itself for a few days. Complicating the issue is because I'm only saving daily CHANGES to prices only and not snapshotting the entire days list (the data would be huge) when I display the data the company will still come up for the previous days price. So I need to do something like this, where a 0.00 price means they're no longer there.

  • IE7 and the CSS table-cell property

    So I just love it when my application is working great in Firefox, but then I open it in IE and... Nope, please try again. The issue I'm having is that I'm setting a CSS display property to either "none" or "table-cell" with JavaScript. I was initially using "display: block;", but Firefox was rending it weird without the table-cell property. I would love to do this without adding an hack in the JavaScript to test for IE.   • Rotating blocks in JavaScript.

    I'd like to create a JavaScript web app that makes blocks appear on the page that can be dragged around by the user. If I used DIVs with background colors, it would be easy to rotate them by 90 degrees at a time. However, if I wanted to rotate them arbitrarily, how could I accomplish this? I'd rather not have to resort to Flash, images, or HTML5.
