  • Live HTML Preview

    When you need to edit an HTML document in NetBeans you may find useful this little plugin that adds a Preview tab to HTML editor window. The plugin works with some small issues in NetBeans 7.4 but I recommend using development builds instead. So install the plugin, restart NetBeans and open any HTML document. Notice there's a Preview button in editor's toolbar (see the red rectangle in the picture below). Now split the editor window by dragging the split button at top right corner. You can also use menu View - Split - Vertically.  Then in the bottom split part toggle Preview button. You will get a live preview of your HTML source code. The preview pane will auto-refresh as you edit the HTML code. There are even some handy tools in Preview toolbar, for example you can resize the preview browser to match the screen dimensions of various device types. I know there is full-blown HTML5 support in NetBeans 7.4. But if you need to edit a single document or when you're running Java-only NetBeans distribution this plugin may come handy... Note: The plugin is built on top of embedded WebKit browser which is based on JavaFX WebView component. So there might be some issue when using the plugin on some flavors of Linux.

    Another Mercurial release, another broken extension. Mercurial 2.3 breaks hgforest ... once more. Of course, with open source, the notion of backwards compatibility is sometimesoften left as an exercise for the curious readers of said source code, so until someone gets around to fix up hgforest ... once more, to keep up with Mercurial's churn, one way to get hgforest working again is to downgrade to Mercurial 2.2.3, for example.   • ORA-00900 Super Easy Fix (for some cases)

    Here is a really easy fix for some ORA-00900 errors. Well at least the one I saw the other day. This was something that I did not come across when searching either. I found lots of other ideas on what the problem might be but not the fix. Since I am fairly new to PL/SQL (TSQL only for a long time) this one stumped me for a while. Until I asked someone and they saw the error in about two seconds. When using the Command Window to add a view I was receiving an ORA-00900 error. So I checked that everything the view was referencing was there and that the permissions looked OK. The code for the view was fairly simple and it ran just fine in a regular SQL Window. It ended up that the Command Window did not like the space I had between the list of items in the select before the from. Bad: col1,col2,                               <--- does not like the empty linefrom tblSomething Good: col1,col2,from tblSomething I will just chalk that up to my familiarity with PL/SQL.   • SSMS Slow To Save

    When using SSMS 2008 I found it to be really slow when trying to save a file, even a small one with just some simple SELECT statements on it. The symptoms were the flashing save disk icons in the lower right corner and selecting the location to save in the Save File dialog would hang each time I picked a location (e.g. Libraries, a folder). This was the first I had seen anything like this where it was really, really slow. It ended up that a server had died last week and I was still mapping a drive to it. SSMS was still trying to connect to it causing the slow down (further information here and here). Once I removed that the save functionality worked like it should. Tags: SQL

  • Lost in Code?

    Sometimes you're coding and you find yourself forgetting your context. For example, look at this situation: The cursor is on line 52. Imagine you're coding there and you're puzzling on some problem for some time. Wouldn't it be handy to know, without scrolling up (and then back down again to where you were working), what the method signature looks like? And does the method begin two lines above the visible code or 10 lines? That information can now, in NetBeans iDE 7.3 (and already in the 7.3 Beta) very easily be ascertained, by putting the cursor on the closing brace of the code block: As you can see, a new vertical line is shown parallel to the line numbers, connecting the end of the method with its start, as well as, at the top of the editor, the complete method signature, together with the number of the line on which it's found. Very handy. Same support is found for other file types, such as in JavaScript files.
