  • Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

    As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE. No need to create a fake Java file, unlike what I said in part 1, no need to depend on all the Java Editor modules, if you use DialogBinding.bindComponentToDocument, instead of DialogBinding.bindComponentToFile: public final class CountryEditorTopComponent extends TopComponent {     public CountryEditorTopComponent() {         initComponents();         setName(Bundle.CTL_CountryEditorTopComponent());         setToolTipText(Bundle.HINT_CountryEditorTopComponent());         EditorKit kit = CloneableEditorSupport.getEditorKit("text/plain");         jEditorPane1.setEditorKit(kit);         DialogBinding.bindComponentToDocument(jEditorPane1.getDocument(), 0, 0, jEditorPane1);         jEditorPane1.setText("Egypt");     } The above requires a dependency on Editor Library 2, which is where DialogBinding is found. Aside from that, you need all the dependencies required by the Code Completion API, as described in the Code Completion tutorial on the NetBeans Platform Learning Trail. Once you've done that, go to the Project Properties dialog of the application and then in the "ide" cluster, include "Plain Editor" and "Plain Editor Library". I.e., two additional JARs only. These two are needed because you've set the MIME type to "text/plain", which is needed because DialogBinding expects the JEditorPane to have a MIME type. And now everything works. Press Ctrl-Space in your JEditorPane and, because your CompletionProvider is registered in "text/x-dialog-binding" (via the annotation on CompletionProvider), your completion items are displayed. (The only MIME type for binding a document to a component, by default, is "text/x-dialog-binding", which means the next step is for someone to figure out how to support multiple different of such MIME types, since each JEditorPane in your application is likely to require its own specific code completion support.) I think this is a really workable solution for real scenarios where JEditorPanes in NetBeans Platform applications require code completion.

  • Open in explorer view not working SOMETIMES !!

    Hello, As weird as it seems to anyone who used it before, most of the time explorer view does not work until some steps to be followed, but in my case it was working and sometimes randomly not working ! After spending hours of troubleshooting and collecting logs, Network traces, Fiddler traces, etc. I reached the solution from the Network trace. Although it seems strange, it was sending a PROPFIND request to the root directory "/" which was actually deleted. So, I came up to this important article that states that you must have a root site collection in your SharePoint web application in order to keep it in a supported state. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2590564 And actually that explained it and solved the strange behavior as well.   • Google Voice API for .NET

    There is no official API for Google Voice. However, many of the operations are done via simple rest style http calls, so building one shouldn’t be too difficult. Digging deeper and rolling your own is always a great way to exercise your problem solving skills and learn new things. So I did just that. As of the time of writing this, I’m only implementing basic SMS send since that’s all I needed. I’m hoping to implement more functionality in the future. In my next post, I’ll be using the SMS functionality to implement 2 factor authentication with ASP.Net MVC.

  • Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

    Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well. At least until the next time - FB

  • Customer Highlight: NTT DOCOMO

    NTT DOCOMO is the largest mobile operator in Japan, and serves over 13 million smartphone customers. Due to their growing data processing and scalability needs, they turned to Oracle's Cloud Application Foundation products for an integral soultion. At Oracle OpenWorld 2012, we first showcased NTT DOCOMO as a customer who was utilizing Oracle Coherence to process mobile data at a rate of 700,000 events per second (and then using Hadoop for distributed processing of big data). Overall, this Led to a 50% cost reduction due to the ultra-high velocity traffic processing of their customers' events. Recently, on October 7th, 2013, Oracle and NTT DOCOMO were proud to again announce a partnership around another key component of Oracle CAF: WebLogic Server. WebLogic was recently deployed as the application platform of choice to run DOCOMO's mission-critical data system ALADIN, which connects nationwide shops and information centers. ALADIN, which also utilizes Oracle Database and Oracle Tuxedo, is based on Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE), which has allowed the company to operate smoothly while minimizing additional development and modification associated with the migration of application server products.   • The [2] table entry '[3]' has no associated entry in the Media table. (error 2602)

    Coworker started getting the above message in the event log and as dialog during install.  Argument [2] was File and argument [3] was a specific file. Error dialog read   Product: (app name) -- The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2602. Package was a vendor-provided MSI that had been installed administratively, and then a patch (.msp) applied to the administrative install point. With some digging we found that the MSI still had the entries in the media table pointing at the CAB files, and that there were several files at the end of the sequence that did not have corresponding entries in the Media table (last sequence 990 in Media table, last entry in File table had sequence 994).  Attributes on files in the File table all had the msidbFileAttributesCompressed (&16384) attribute set, so they were all expecting to be within the CAB files, but since this was an admin install there were no CAB files. Resolved by clearing the Media table (replace with a single entry: Disk ID 1, LastSequence 994) and going through the file table and subtracting 8192 from each entry to mark files as not compressed.  Tested and worked.
