• Can't resolve localhost on Mac OS X Server

  I have a server running OS X Server 10.5 and it can't resolve localhost to 127.0.0.1. When I try ping this is what happens: ping localhost ping: cannot resolve localhost: Unknown host SSH and web browsers get similar results (uknown host). If I try using 127.0.0.1 or the ip address assigned on the LAN all of the above work. Here's the contents of my /etc/hosts file: cat /etc/hosts ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost I have no local DNS service running. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening or how I can fix it?

• Weird canvas/page size printing problem in Adobe Acrobat

  I am trying to print a document in Adobe Acrobat. For some reason, Acrobat wants to print my document smaller than it actually is, despite having chosen that I DO NOT want the image to be scaled: http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?945fbb3f41.png See the grey area on the top and left of the preview? That's the area that's getting cut off. Notice that the whole preview (INCLUDING the gray areas) is 8.5x11 in. Also look at the paper size, a nice 8.5x11 in. This happens for any real printer I connect to my computer. However, printing to a "fake" software printer is not a problem: Printing to a software printer: Use the above link but change the image name to this: 769eaf59ab.png Any ideas? I've tried messing with the paper sizes but no luck. I can't use "Shrink to printable area" because ultimately I'm doing this to print to a preprinted form (the same issue occurs when I select "Form fields only" but this demonstrates it better).

• How to reinstall OEM Windows 98 SE?

  I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Hårddisken är inte klar för återställning av programvara. Installationsprogrammet måste skapa nya partitioner (C:, D:, ...). VARNING! ALLT INNEHÅLL PÅ HÅRDDISKEN KOMMER ATT RADERAS! Tryck på en tangent om du vill fortsätta (eller CTRL-C för att avbryta). Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing. • Can we have Linked Servers when using NTLM?

  I don't have access to the Active Directory settings, nor do I have access to change anything on the linked server. From everything I've read, it seems like this means I cannot use Kerberos - which is a big problem, because I don't know how to use a linked server without it. Is there any way to connect to a linked server without Kerberos? Exact problem description When I connect to the linked server while sitting in front of my server, it works fine; but when I try to connect to the linked server from any other computer (delegating through my server), it gives the error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456) It seems that this is the "double-hop problem," and the usual solution is to enable Kerberos, which requires access to AD and the linked server. I get the same error when I set security to "Be made using the login's current security context," and I can't use "Be made using this security context" because that appears to use SQL-authentication (which is not enabled on the linked server) instead of NTLM

  Basically I have a Ubuntu Server machine and I would like an idiot-proof solution for sending emails from my website that is also running in this same machine. My doubts are: 1) Should I use postfix or there are more simple solutions for an smtp server? 2) Do I need to be able to receive emails as well? I just want to send emails... 3) I did I simple test with postfix that came with my Ubuntu server and the email got sent, but it went to the spam box of my gmail. • Simple bash scripting

  I'm trying to get to grips with bash scripting via cygwin. My script is about as simple as it gets. I change the directory to the root of my C drive, and print the new location. #!/usr/bin/bash cd /cygdrive/c pwd is saved in the file chdir.sh in my home directory. I then call ./chdir.sh from the bash prompt. This results in the error : No such file or directorygdrive/c /cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings/rcotton I definitely have a C drive, and the command cd /cygdrive/c works when I call it directly from the bash prompt. I realise that this problem is likely stupidly simple; please can you tell me what I'm doing wrong.

• Blackberry message text is all white on white cannot read - Outlook 2007

  Hi, I have a user that has Outlook 2007. When a certain person sends her an email from their blackberry the text is all white. If you copy all the text and place it in Word and change the font color you can see the email. The recipient is the only person that has the trouble with email from the blackberry device from this certain person. Everyone else can see the bb messages fine. Any ideas on what to check? I made sure the theme was set to none and that all fonts selected were installed (changed it to arial.) All other emails sent to the recipient are fine from everyone. The user that sends from the blackberry also has a PC. When he sends emails from the machine it looks fine for the troubled recipient. It is only when sending from the bb to that certain person that we get the white on white "invisible" text. Thank you for any help.

• Windows Installer using usb drive for temp purposes

  When installing apps that are built around Windows Installer, it would appear that it often uses my external usb hard disk (when it's connected) as the temp location while it expands and installs the application (creates a folder off the root with a guid name). Is there anyway to change this so it always defaults to a specific drive? This appears to be the case on Windows Vista and 7, not sure about previous releases. EDIT: Current environment variables look like this: TEMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp TMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp EDIT: I have a funny suspicion that it's using the drive with the largest available free space.

  Hi, today I accidently changed one option of Teminal Services, I checked "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". After that, I can't connect to my server any more. The error says: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. But my client pcs(both home and at office) are running Windows 7, as far as I know, it shoud support NLA; And in About dialog of Remote Desktop Connection there says "Supports Network Level Authentication". My server is running Windows Server 2008, placed in IDC center; I could connect to it before I change the settings. All other sevices(like IIS, SQL Server) are running normally. For clients, I tried two PCs running Windows 7, and two virtual windows XP machine running in Virtual PC and Virtual Box, all of them gives the same error message. Is there a way I can make things right without go to IDC which is far away? Thanks.

  On two computers with Windows 7 at work and at home with the same version of iTunes (10.1.0.56) at work I can drag-and-drop files into iPod, and I can not at home. At home only adding them first through a dialog box to a Library and only after that drag-and-dropping into iPod (or iPad) works. Initially I thought the problem is in iTunes, but looks like it's the same version, so most likely it's the Windows 7 config parameters. It's 64-bit W7, and I have admin privileges in both cases. The only difference I could think of is it's an enterprise version at work and ultimate at home. What should I change at home to enable that drag-and-drop-ing files into the application?

• Windows Boot Manager, linking a 'device' to boot linux

  I'm attempting to boot linux on a UEFI-GPT machine with a Windows Boot Manager (WBM). So far I have installed Archlinux (Arch) with Grub. The grubx64.efi is successfully on my windows boot partition and I can see the option to use it in UEFI-BIOS, selecting this loads grub and I'm able to get into Arch fine. I have noticed that in the Windows Boot Manager, selecting from the splash screen, 'Change defaults or choose other options' 'Choose other options' 'Use a device', shows the boot options as in UEFI-BIOS, in my case grub shows as 'Linux'. Selecting 'Linux' reboots the computer and loads grub then Arch. Is there anyway to use this entry for the device 'Linux' to show directly on the WBM splash screen under the entry for Windows 8.1? Ideally i'd like the 'Arch Linux' to link to the 'Linux' device. Guidance with bcdedit appreciated, thanks in advance.

  I'm installing gitolite from CentOS packages for my client. The package creates a gitolite user, which will be visible explicitly during a "git clone" operations. The client wants to use "git" and not "gitolite", in case we change to something more fancy later. I'm not very familiar with CentOS, so I don't want to try to build the package myself from source. I'm wondering if there's a way to do one of the following: Trick sshd into treating "git" as "gitolite". Somehow "alias" a new git username to be the same in all ways as the existing gitolite username (perhaps through some complex combinations of useradd). Rename the "gitolite" username to "git" without upsetting later yum update operations Something else that I hadn't thought of I'd appreciate detailed instructions or pointers.

  I have jira installed on my server. It was running at http://[my ip address]:8100. I could manage to change it to http://jira.[my domain].com. Now after I access it at http://jira.[my domain].com, a browser path changes to http://jira.[my domain].com:8100/secure/Dashboard.jspa. Why does the port show up? Is there any way to remove 8100 port from this redirect. I'd like it to be http://jira.[my domain].com/secure/Dashboard.jspa Also my jira now responds both to jira.[my domain].com and [my ip address]:8100. The latter one is corrupted. Is it possible to stop user accessing it? Thank you!

Seems the hyper-V system disk has got a time based program (virus) causing the reset. I thought the hypervisor had a small attack surface and should be OK. All virtual machines (SBS2008, Win7 and Win XP) and network computers are protected with TrendMicro WFBS. I am about to rebuild the disk (I have backups) but wondered if there were any suggestions to try first???

• UDP multicast streaming of media content over WIFI

  I am using vlc to stream media content over wireless network in scenario like this (from content streamer to stream receiver client): The bandwidth of wireless network is 54 Mb/s and UDP stream's required bandwidth is only 4 Mb/s; however there is trouble in receiving media stream and quality of playing specifically in multicast mode; means I can play the stream but it has jitter and does not play smoothly. In uni-cast I can stream up to 5 media streams correctly, but in multicast mode there is problem with streaming just one media! However when I stream from client some multicast streams; the wifi access-point can receive data correctly and I can see the video in "udp streamer" side correctly even when number of multicast streams increases to 9; But as you see I want to stream from streaming server and receive media in client size. Is this a typical problem of streaming real-time contents over wireless networks? Is it necessary to change configurations of my WIFI switch or it is just a software trouble? thank you

• Windows 7 installation reboot loop

  Upgrading from Vista home premium to win 7 hoe premium from DVD ex Digital river on gigabyte VM900m; core 2 duo 2.13GHz 2GB ram; Western digital 250GB HD. Got as far as "Expanding Windows files ...100% the error message "Computer encountered unexpected error... To install windows press OK to restart computer and reinstall windows" The computer then reboots, loads Windows 7 (new logo) a essage that says "setup is starting services" then the error message comes back. I can get into BIOS to change boot priority but the computer just ignores this and goes through the same sequence. At the point of "to boot from CD/DVD press any key" my keyboard is deactivated and i cannot make a choice and the sae sequence occurs. I cannot break the sequence - I have push every key, disconnected every external device including HDMI screen, but nothing stops the loop. Any ideas? Auswoolf

• CakePHP: trouble configuring .htaccess for user directories enabled server

  I've placed the CakePHP files in a directory in /home/user/public_html/cakephp. When I try to reach localhost/~user/cakephp with my browser, there's an error message. In my case, since I'm using Chrome, it is 'Oops! This link appears to be broken.". Looking for a solution on Google, I found a few articles saying that I have to edit the .htaccess files that came with CakePHP, since it was made to work out of the box in /var/www/htdocs. Apparently I have to add a 'RewriteBase' statement to the .htaccess files. I added 'RewriteBase /' to it but it didn't work. If I change the RewriteBase statement in my user web directory to 'RewriteBase /cakephp' and then try to access localhost/~user/cakephp, the browser then shows not the copy in /home/user/public_html/cakephp but the copy in /var/www/htdocs/cakephp. What can I do to fix this?

Full error mail from exchange (sorry, not exact message, but translated from ru to en) Diagnostic info for administrators: Forming server: domain1_with_sendmail user@domain3 #< #5.1.3 SMTP; 553 sorry, your domain does not exists.> #SMTP# Does Exchange change text description from remote smtp error? There is "MX" record for domain3 and no "A" records for domain3, only one for "www.domain3" Update" all domains are public and have fully-qualified names, all dns's are accessible." Update2: domain1 has only "A" record, but not the MX one. Can it be a problem?

• HP Pavilion dv3 volume control display driver on Windows 7

  I've recently bought an HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep and I'm having a hard time getting the volume control display to work as expected. The control is a back-lit touch-sensitive bar above the keyboard. Now the buttons to turn the volume up and down actually do it, but the lightning is not changing at all. The mute button does change color when toggled. I'm not sure if I'm missing any drivers here (I've installed all of those on the HP support page that seem to have something to do with sound and/or display) or if I have to activate this somewhere. Any ideas?

• How do you persuade users to abandon their personal folders?

  Towards the end of last year we started using Mimecast services, in particular their cloud base e-mail archiving. Since then we’ve been rolling out the Mimecast Services for Outlook (MSO) Add-in. We’ve informed the users that we will be give them training in the next few Months, and we do not require them to use it, but my boss stated that we are getting rid of Personal Folders (pst files), by putting them into Mimecast. Unsurprisingly this did cause something of a backlash. Though really who likes change. I know the IT reasons for getting rid of Personal Folders (inefficient, unreliable, single access, etc), but from an average user’s perspective, unless they have had one fail on them, they see them as simple and only way to archive e-mail when their 200Mb mailbox is full. So what can I say to the users, to get them to understand why Personal Folders are not the best solution?

  I have configured mod_status like this in my Apache 2 config file: <Location /server-status> SetHandler server-status Order Deny,Allow </Location> I also tried: Order Deny,Allow allow from all And: Order Allow,Deny allow from all And: Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 145.xxx.xx.xx And of course I restarted Apache after each configuration change. I tried the configurations above in my main config file and under a VirtualHost directive. When I place the configuration under VirtualHost or in a NameVirtualHost block I get a 404 instead of 403. But I get only get 403 Forbidden when I visit example.com/server-status/ I don't use an .htaccess file. It works now! I placed the server-status code right above the definitions of the virtual hosts. I didn't test the right configuration on the right virtual host. On the virtual host without htaccess files it works, on virtual hosts with an app installed I get 404 because of url rewrites in the htaccess file.

• Snow Leopard tzdata

  I live in Argentina, and our DST rules change often. So often, that major OS' tend to ship with an old version of tzdata DBs. In the past, I successfully updated the time zone databases in Tiger and Leopard. Today, however, when trying to update it in Snow Leopard, it did not work. Not only it failed, but now even after I reverted my changes, there seems to be some "cache" where the time zone information was retained. The files I updated (and reverted) are located at: /usr/share/zoneinfo and /usr/share/icu. To update those, I grabbed Apple's source code for ICU and recompiled it's database using the latest tzdata file (2010b). Then, I recompiled the tzinfo by running zic, and copied all the files to the system folders. Does anyone have experience dealing with Snow Leopard's timezone DB and can help? Thank you.
