  I've been wondering this for some time. As the title say, which is faster, the actual function or simply raising to the half power? UPDATE This is not a matter of premature optimization. This is simply a question of how the underlying code actually works. What is the theory of how Python code works? I sent Guido van Rossum an email cause I really wanted to know the differences in these methods. My email: There are at least 3 ways to do a square root in Python: math.sqrt, the '**' operator and pow(x,.5). I'm just curious as to the differences in the implementation of each of these. When it comes to efficiency which is better? His response: pow and ** are equivalent; math.sqrt doesn't work for complex numbers, and links to the C sqrt() function.   I’m using ReadDirectoryChangesW to spy a folder, if I’m copying a large file to the folder, I can receive multiple FILE_ACTION_MODIFIED messages, it seems each time windows writes a large chunk of the file, you get the file modified notification for each time. I tried to use CreateFile API to check if the file can open by AP or not, but sometime, some of files are always locked by other AP, for example, if you are opening the Outlook, the PST will update, but my AP can’t access it, we have to start Shadow Copy to open it. So my question is, how to know a file is finished copying?

• Cross Platform build

  I have an application in which we use a hand-made build system.The reason for this is portability, the application should be portable on Linux/Mac/Windows. There are some port-specific files that are not updated by the deafult build system. What I do now is update the files manually or have a script do this. However I am thinking of switching to cross platform build system like cmake or scons. Are their associated problems wrt portability? Will it pay in long run? and if so what should be my choice "cmake", "scons" or some other(if any?). Thanks,

• Creating a future proof .NET 3.5 SP1 installer prerequisite for setup.exe AND the .MSI

  I've demanded .NET 3.5 SP1 a la http://stackoverflow.com/questions/88136/will-a-vs2008-setup-project-update-net-3-5-sp1. This makes the setup.exe check correctly. I've also added a "SP1" launch condition to my MSI so it doesn't let the user install my .NET 3.5SP1 app via launching the MSI (and replaced the [VSDNETMSG] in the Framework condition message with one that actually mentions SP1). From a future proofing point of view, this feels wrong. I want the condition to be: (NETVer=3.5 AND Net35SPLevel=1) OR (NETVer=>3.5) not (NETVer=3.5 AND Net35SPLevel=1) Is there any way to do that? The framework check doesnt have a condition property to allow me to add a sub-condition... Yes, I could also just not worry my pretty little head about it :P If one of the MS versioning experts out there reads this, if you're going to put stuff that code depends on into SPs, can you please make the installer be able to check for it OOTB. (I really wish they had come up with a better numbering scheme - the world and its dog could see that this was going to get confusing)

• Provide "Paste Link" Functionality in C# Winforms App

  I would like to add Copy-Paste Link functionality to an application. The application replaces a complex Excel workbook. I would like to be able to copy tables, text, and charts from the application and use Paste Link in MS Word. For the uninitiated: With Excel, when you use Paste Link for the tables, text, charts, etc. the items update in Word when you change them in Excel. Does anyone know for sure if this is/is not possible (is it some proprietary feature of MS Word-Excel)? If not, can anyone point me to some resources that will help (either an app that does this or a tutorial/write-up). Thanks!

• UITableView: moving a row into an empty section

  I have a UITableView with some empty sections. I'd like the user to be able to move a row into them using the standard edit mode controls. The only way I can do it so far is to have a dummy row in my "empty" sections and try to hide it by using tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath: to give the dummy row a height of zero. This seems to leave it as a 1-pixel row. I can probably hide this by making a special type of cell that's just filled with [UIColor groupTableViewBackgroundColor], but is there a better way? This is all in the grouped mode of UITableView UPDATE: Looks like moving rows into empty sections IS possible without any tricks, but the "sensitivity" is bad enough that you DO need tricks in order to make it usable for general users (who won't be patient enough to slowly hover the row around the empty section until things click)

• Combine DVCS with Visual Source Safe

  I'm forced to use Visual Source Safe 2005 at work. I'd like to combine that with a DVCS, so that I can check in files locally without disrupting my co-workers if there's a bug or it doesn't compile. In my attempts with Mercurial, it works, but causes a few weird issues. Namely, it thinks someone else has checked out the files I have checked out. Here's my thoughts on how I should manage it: Disable auto-checkout. Work locally in Mercurial When I'm ready to push my changes... Clone my Mercurial repository. Update my Visual Source Safe repository Pull and merge the two repositories using Mercurial. Check everything into Visual Source Safe. Does this sound reasonable? I'm always hearing bad things about VSS, is this just asking for me to see those problems firsthand?

• Master / Detail datagridview with relation from type string in C#

  Hello, I want to show a master / detail relationship using two datagridviews and DataRelation in C#. The relation between the master and the detail table is an ID from type string (and there is no chance to change the ID to type integer). It seems like the DataGridView is not able to update the detail view when changing the row in the master table. Does anybody know if it is possible to achieve a master / detail view using a string ID and if yes, how? Or do I have to use an external DataGrid from another company? Thanks for any help Daniel

• Checking for & storing multiple CheckBox selections in CSharp.

  I'm very new to CSharp and I can't seem to find a good solution to what I would consider a simple problem. Basically I'm trying to determine which CheckBoxs have been selected by the user and then randomly generate combinations of the selections the user has made. As new as I am, I am aware that you can use a simple statement such as: checkBox1.IsChecked == true I could have a long set of if statements which update an array/collection, but I'm told that in Csharp there is a way of determining which CheckBoxs are checked by querying the GroupBox that the CheckBoxs are in. Unless I'm mistaken (which is very possible) this is achieved by using Control features, unfortunately I've not come across these yet in my learning so if someone could clear things up that would be great. In summation, if someone has a simple solution for running through a set of checkBoxs and storing only the selected ones I would be most grateful.

  Hi, i am trying to automate manual testing of modules in my project. We are dealing with IBM Websphere Message queue software. We have a trigger component written in core java which when executed polls for availability of message in the configured queue. Its an indefinite while loop that keeps the trigger component running. I have written test cases in JUnit to put message in the queue and now will i be able to start/stop the trigger component on demand? Invoking the trigger component keeps it running and i am not getting the control back to check the expected output. If i start it in thread then the log files to which the trigger component is supposed to update when processing the message is not getting updated. How can i resolve this situation.   I'm building a web semantic project that gathers the maximum ammount of historic data about a certain company and tries to predict its future market stock values. For data I have the historic stock values (not normalized), news (0 to 1 polarity) and subjective content (also a 0 to 1 polarity). What is the best AI system to train and use for this kind of objective? Is a simple NN with back-propagation training the best I can hope for? update: Everyone is concerned about the quality of this system. Although I'm pretty sure the system is as good as a random prediction (or even worse), this is a school project around artificial intelligence and web semantics. Therefore I'm only concerned in picking the best kind of train method for the data I have (NN, RBF, SVM, Bayes, neuro-fuzzy, etc). Its not about making money.

• Entity Framework - Optimistic Concurrency Issue

  I have a windows service that runs every 10 seconds ... each time it runs, it takes some test data, modifies it and persists it to the database using the EntityFramework. However, on every second run, when I try to persist the change I get the following Optimistic Concurrency Exception:- Store update, insert, or delete statement affected an unexpected number of rows (0). Entities may have been modified or deleted since entities were loaded. Refresh ObjectStateManager entries I know for a fact that there is nothing else writing to that DB but my service which updates records every 10 seconds. What could be causing the concurrency exception here ?

  Context: Master server (Java, TCP) monitoring a list of hosted games (a different machine for the master server and for each hosted game server). Any user can host a game on his PC. Hosted games can last weeks or months. Need: Knowing when hosted game servers are closed or no longer reachable. Restriction 1: Can't rely on hosted servers' "gone offline update message", since those messages may never arrive (power down, Internet link cut, etc.) Restriction 2: I'm not sure about TCP's built-in keep-alive, since it would mean a 24/7 open socket with each hosted server (correct me if I'm wrong) Any thoughts?

• How do you get the footer to stay at the bottom of a Web page?

  I have a simple 2-column layout with a footer that clears both the right and left div in my markup. My problem is that I can't get the footer to stay at the bottom of the page in all browsers. It works if the content pushes the footer down, but that's not always the case. Update: It's not working properly in Firefox. I'm seeing a strip of background color below the footer when there's not enough content on the page to push the footer all the way down to the bottom of the browser window. Unfortunately, this is the default state of the page.

  Hi! I'm working on a game for the iPhone where I use the Oolong engine for rendering, and now I just tried to update my project to the newest version. However - now I get the following error when I try to compile: gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 in the build results I see in which cpp file the error happens, but I don't see any additional information. how can I get more info about what is going wrong in order to track down the problem? edit: after inspecting the compile output, i got the following lines, where the error occurs: {standard input}:61:selected processor does not support 'fmrx r0, fpscr' {standard input}:62:unshifted register required -- 'bic r0,r0,#0x00370000' ...somemorelines {standard input}:69:selected processor does not support 'fmxr fpscr,r0' this is some VFO code from one of the #include files. it works fine in the examples that come with the egnine. could there be something screwed up with my project settings? I compared them to the one of the example and they seem to be identical

All users are in the same OU and the exchange 2003 server has sp2 installed. Anyone might know why this is? Update: I figured out that if I disable and re-enable the Outlook Mobile Access setting for each user, the msExchOmaAdminWirelessEnable attribute shows up again for those users missing that attribute...weird..

  Are there any limitations with respect to developing ASP.NET and WPF apps using VS 2008/2010 and SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium? I know you can run IIS 7.5 on Home Premium. I Googled and Binged on Home Premium and VS/SQL Server and couldn't find much. It doesn't look like the features missing from Home Premium, domain joining, xp mode, etc... shouldn't prevent one from running and developing in VS/SQL Server. Update I did discover one limitation w/IIS 7.5 and it applies to all versions of Windows 7 I think. You can't create your own self signed SSL certificate specifying a name other than the machine name. You're stuck with your machine name which isn't that big a deal, but it is a change from previous versions.

• Asynchronous Silverlight WCF callback

  I've created my own WCF service and I've successfully been able to talk to it via my Silverlight client. I ran into an interesting problem on my asynchronous callbacks though. When my callback is invoked, I can't update any UI controls with the dreaded invalid cross thread access Here's what my callback function looks like private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString(); } A quick google search showed me that I have to do this instead. private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( () => lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString() ); } Now everything works fine, but I wasn't expecting my callback to be running on a different thread. Will I always have to use the Dispatcher class in order to modify anything within my class or is this just limited to UI elements? I've not familiar with the Dispatcher class at all so I'm looking to understand it more.

  hi all, I am working on an iPhone application based on UITabBarController and UIViewControllers for each page. The app needs to run in portrait mode only, so every view controller + app delegate goes with this line of code: (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: (UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait); } There is one view controller where I would like to pop up a UIImageView when the iPhone is rotaed to landscapeleft. The design of the image looks landscape, although the width and height are 320x460 ( so its portrait ). How can/should I detect this type of rotation manually, just in this specific view controller, withouth having an auto rotation on the entire view? Thomas UPDATE: Thanks!
