  I recently got bit by a subtle bug. char ** int2str = { "zero", // 0 "one", // 1 "two" // 2 "three",// 3 nullptr }; assert( values[1] == "one"_s ); // passes assert( values[2] == "two"_s ); // fails If you have godlike code review powers you'll notice I forgot the , after "two". After the considerable effort to find that bug I've got to ask why would anyone ever want this behavior? I can see how this might be useful for macro magic, but then why is this a "feature" in a modern language like python? Have you ever used string literal concatenation in production code?

• WinForms - Localization - UI controls positions different in additional Culture

  Hi, I did my UI settings.Original language is English. After that I set Localizable property to True. Copied original resx file to frmMain.de-De.resx (for example). Translated all strings. Everything works. But now I would like to change positions of controls. After that changes are visible only for original/primary Culture (En). When I change Culture to de-De then UI controls are on the "old positions"(?!) Is this normal behaviour? :O I'm unable to change controls positions on my form after localization? Can someone explain me this and give some best solution. I really have to change UI design but I don't want to manual copy all translated strings again. If my description is not clear then I can post source code, just please let me know. I use VS 2008. Greetz!

• Why not port Linux kernel to Common Lisp?

  Conventional wisdom states that OS kernels must be written in C in order to achieve the necessary levels of performance. This has been the justification for not using more expressive high level languages. However, for a few years now implementations of Common Lisp such as SBCL have proven to be just as performant as C. What then are the arguments against redoing the kernel in a powerfully expressive language, namely Common Lisp? I don't think anyone (at least anyone who knows what they are talking about) could argue against the fact that the benefits in transparency and readability would be tremendous, not to mention all the things that can't be done in C that can be done in Lisp, but there may be implementation details that would make this a bad idea.

• Setting a WebControls TabIndex based on the ControlId of another control

  I have an ASP.NET Webforms site that is regularly having features added. The majority of time a new WebControl is added to the page and I need to increment the TabIndex to all subsequent controls on the page. I'd prefer a more robust solution than choosing an arbitrary gap between the initial assigned tab indexes. Setting the tab indexes using the designer tab order functionality is one option but I'd prefer to stay in the source view. Ideally, if I had three check boxes I'd like to be able to define the tabindex based off the previous controls tabindex. • UpdatePanel + ToolkitScriptManager work in FF but blows up in IE 6+

  I just upgraded my ASP.NET application from AjaxToolkit version 1.0 to version 3.5. The only code that I had to change as a result of the upgrade was to replace instances of ScriptManager with ToolKitScriptManager. UpdatePanels that used to work flawlessly in both FF and IE6+ now only work in FF. The specific problem in IE is twofold: PostBackTriggers don't perform any PostBack at all (i.e button clicks do nothing) AsyncPostBackTriggers do perform an async PostBack, but outside of a single hidden field (created by the ToolKitScriptManager itself) no ViewState is being sent back to the server for any controls. Needless to say, controls tend to fail in rather spectacular fashion when they can't access their ViewState during a PostBack. :) The only thing I can think of that would account for this only failing in IE6+, is that there is some malformed JavaScript getting piped down that FF is able to work around/ignore but that causes IE to self-destruct Downgrading to the 1.0 version of AjaxToolkit would probably fix this issue, but there are several key features in the 3.5 I need to leverage so this would be painful.   I need to know, in a context of a unit test, if Jetbrains IntelliJ idea is the test initiator and if it is, which version is running (or at least if it's "9" or earlier). I don't mind doing dirty tricks (reflection, filesystem, environment...) but I do need this to work "out-of-the-box" (without each developer having to setup something special). I've tried some reflection but couldn't find a unique identifier I could latch onto. Any idea? Oh - the language is Java.

  Is there a way to store a conversion strategy (for converting some bytes) into a database and then execute it on the run time. If one were to store a complete java file, you would need to compile it, store the class and some how inject into the already running system. I am not sure how this would be possible. But using some kind of dynamic language on JVM would be nice. I see an example of execution of groovy from within spring context here http://www.devx.com/tips/Tip/42789 but this is still static in nature as application context contains the reference to the implementation and cannot be changed by database. Perhaps with JavaConfig of context it is possible. I am exploring options now, specifically with Spring 3.0. Your suggestions in any direction would be welcome.

  Ok so last year I participated in a high school curriculum contest thing at a college(I currently attend this college). I actually got 1st in it but was still a bit angry I didn't get every single one right. The most baffling of questions on there was How many lines of code does the average programmer write per day? A. 5 B. 10 C. 25 D. 30 Aside from being a subjective question which depended on language and everything else I was more baffled at what they had as the correct answer. 10. Even on my bad days at my job I touch more than 10 lines of code(either adding, modifying, or deleting) per day. And when I took this test I had only programmed as a hobby where it was common for me to write a few hundred lines for one of my new projects per day. Where are they getting this random number of ten!? Is this published somewhere? A quick googling found me nothing.

• Is there a way to mark up code to tell ReSharper not to format it?

  I quite often use the ReSharper "Clean Up Code" command to format my code to our coding style before checking it into source control. This works well in general, but some bits of code are better formatted manually (eg. because of the indenting rules in ReSharper, things like chained linq methods or multi-line ternary operators have a strange indent that pushes them way to the right). Is there any way to mark up parts of a file to tell ReSharper not to format that area? I'm hoping for some kind of markup similar to how ReSharper suppresses other warnings/features. If not, is there some way of changing a combination of settings to get ReSharper to format the indenting correctly? EDIT: I have found this post from the ReSharper forums that says that generated code sections (as defined in the ReSharper options page) are ignored in code cleanup. Having tried it though, it doesn't seem to get ignored.

• Are you as productive in Javascript as you are in .Net or Java?

  I code primarily in javascript and in vb.net. I've found that if I can achieve the same thing in both javascript and vb.net that I feel far more productive and expressive using javascript for the task. I often find myself researching server-side javascript implementations to see if anything has gone mainstream so that I can code my back-end business logic and data access in javascript. Given all the advanced tooling and language features in .Net this preference seems somewhat paradoxical to me. I'm not suggesting one is better than the other (I've been a vb programmer since I started programming), I'm just wondering if my preference is entirely subjective or if anyone else shares it. So, does anyone else enjoy coding in javascript to the point where you prefer it to the .Net and Java environment, and if, so why?

• Failure connecting to Dell MD3200i from XenServer 6.2 pool

  This question also asked at Citrix Forums http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=332289 I have a MD3200i that is currently working fine with my Xen5.6 pool, but I cannot get a connection to the new 6.2 pool to work. I previously had a problem with a 6.0 upgrade (which is why the old pool is still on 5.6), but rolled back rather than fix it as it wasn't urgent at the time. This install is on new machines - I tried 6.1 first (which had the same problems) then 6.2 was released the second day after installation so I switched to that. I've not installed anything from the Dell resource DVD at this point - I can't find anything saying I should, and everything I have read suggests it shouldn't be necessary. I can ping all 8 ip addresses from both servers in the pool, iscsiadm -m discovery works fine, I can login to the nodes and iscsiadm reports the sessions active correctly. I've added the required sections to multipath.conf, but multipath -ll reports DM multipath kernel driver not loaded immediately after boot.   I've got a flex/air app I've been working on, it uses a local sqlite database that is created on the initial application start. I've added some features to the application and in the process I had to add a new field to one of the database tables. My questions is how to I go about getting the application to create one new field that is located in a table that already exists? this is a the line that creates the table stmt.text = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS tbl_status ("+"status_id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT,"+" status_status TEXT)"; And now I'd like to add a status_default field. thanks! • What is the "standard" JQuery treeview that most people use? It seems the most popular plugin isn't

  I've chosen JQuery as my JavaScript library but now I'm a bit frustrated by the JQuery plugin site... the site kinda sucks... the plugin area isn't designed very well and I can only find a few treeviews. The one with the most votes (link text) isn't supported anymore. Can someone please point me to an industrial strength treeview? Desired Features: 1. stable 2. async / ajax would be nice 3. drag and drop nodes would be nice I've been delighted so far with JQueryUI--nice design. But, how come it doesn't come with a standard tree view? Pete

• Firefox jQuery Drag and Drop File Upload together with PHP

  Hi, Hoping to get some assistance but I am after a jQuery/PHP means of allowing a user to drag and drop files and then via PHP, upload one or more files to a specific directory on a Linux box. I only have Firefox 3.6 as my base browser but can also move to FFox if need be. Cann use any HTML5 features as long as I'm using Firefox 3.6 Can someone possibly point me to any examples/sites where this process is demonstrated? I have had a look at http://www.plupload.com/index.php but this does not work in IE6. As mentioned, would like it to work in FFox only. Thanks.
