• Moving from Test Automation to Development

  I'm in an interesting quandary. I've been doing test automation using QTP for about 1.5 years, and am in the slow process of switching to a developer role in my same company. I also begin my Master's in CS this fall. An old friend is trying to recruit me for a Sr. Test Automation position that could potentially pay me $23k more for the exact same thing I do now. But obviously I would defer moving to development. The new company is much more technical overall (I would be moving from financial services to industrial automation, and they have MANY more software dev roles available. I know traditionally QA type jobs carry an odd "danger" tag, but test automation is really a different beast. Does anyone have any experience moving from test automation to development? Does the QA stigma exist? The extra $$ would be nice, but not at the expense of my career. I should note that my Master's will be on Systems/parallel programming, so one thought is that I'll get automatic consideraton for development upon completing my Master's. I also work 6hrs/wk doing game development with a friend.

• How to find out if the screen is WLED or RGBLED on Dell Studio XPS 16?

  I just ordered the Dell Studio XPS 16 with i7 and 16" RGBLED screen. This upgrade from WLED LCD to RGBLED LCD charged me more $$. But now when I view the order online, it lists this part as "320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam". When called Dell, the rep says this part is RGBLED screen and the "premium" is for RGBLED. I want to make sure they are shipping me the RGBLED screen and not the WLED. Is there any way to verify this after I receive (either from Device Manager or BIOS or somewhere in system settings)? Also, is there any published specifications / criteria that we can run (some third party software) on this monitor which can tell if this is WLED or RGBLED?

• radius traffic accounting - what attributes do I use for traffic (and how)

  we are building a web front end for a internet access token management system that uses radius (freeradius) queried from a captive portal. Reason for building this part is the integration into the accounting and billing platform that operates behind the scenes (all other parts are currently available open source software) The structure is fairly standard, and setting up the basic bits were easy enough (authentication, traffic updates from the captive portal, account expiry date/times) - but I seem to have run out of ability when it comes to limiting an account by traffic consumed. So we can: set up usernames / passwords set expiry dates/times for a given user see the traffic for that user being accurately updated in RADACCT But we can't figure out the correct way/attribute to expire a user when they have consumed X octets of traffic. What attributes are used, or - maybe more accurately - what would be the correct way to use these attributes to limit an account to a certain volume of traffic? Any links to documentation appreciated - freeradius documentation doesn't seem to address the issue directly, or I'm looking in the wrong place... --mark

• Windows 8 wmvcore.dll

  I am running Windows 8 Pro N x64 without Windows Media Player (which might be called Windows Media Center in the case of Windows 8) preinstalled. Apparently certain software packages require WMP to be installed, in my case Premiere Pro, (wmvcore.dll required error); however, Microsoft will only be releasing it at the end of October, which is a month from now, while no other WMP packages seem to install on Windows 8. Tried downloading a Windows 7 x64 SP1 wmvcore.dll to no avail. This is a problem for many people at the moment, and a solution would be appreciated.

• Preventing auto-restart of nautilus on gnome 2.28

  Cheers! I dislike disobedience from my system. When I want to explicitly kill Nautilus with kill or killall, I am no longer able to do so. Previously I could disable this erroneous behavior (which even Windows do not exhibit!) through gnome-session-properties, however, it is no longer possible to set the "restart style" there (or whatever it was called). What is nowadays the correct way to disable nautilus autorestart under gnome? Reasons: I'm writing a piece of software that's painting directly into X11 root window. Nautilus is interfering. Compiz has a wallpapers plugin which Nautilus is painting over.

• Smarter System Alerts

  We have a pretty simple system setup, where I get text messages when there is a system problem. It's nothing fancy. I send an email to my phone number within my logging class for alert levels. It works well enough, but it has one major flaw: A small hiccup in the system/site can turn into dozens of rapid fire text messages. Sometimes non-stop text messages until I log into the system and fix the problem. So I'm looking for pointers on software or services I can use that deal with alerts in a smarter way. Perhaps something that only sends me alerts X number of times within Y number of minutes. I'm not looking for a full monitoring suite. We already deal with that in house. I'm only looking to tackle this single problem.

• Automatically Snapshoting AWS instances (or other back up strategy)

  I just realized that my aws instance count has risen into the double digits. I'm currently backing portions of my folders and dbs and moving them off to a backup instance. What I think I should be doing is taking a snapshot of the instances (automatically) and persisting them on S3 so I have a running 7 day collection of daily backups. There is a question asking the same thing here, however the answers don't go into depth. So the closest answer seems to be: use a cron job to snapshot the instance. So do I run the cron job on the instance itself? or do I have a micro instance to run these snapshots? Could I get an example script or the command for say a linux flavor? what software must I have installed to get this to run? Thanks.

• Macbook pro asks me to "Service Battery"

  A couple of weeks ago I checked the battery and at that point in time (after 160 load cycles) it still had a capacity of 5000 mAh. Today, my 2006 macbook pro tells me via the battery menu to "Service Battery". According to Coconut Battery the current capacity is only 1590 mAh. The corresponding help text suggests contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to have the computer checked. Before I decide to throw money at the AASP I'd like to understand what the AASP could possibly do to eliminate the problem. Isn't it more likely that the battery simply broke at 160 cycles and needs to be replaced? Are there any means by software or firmware to influence battery behavior? Of course, the computer hardware might be broken but how could this result in the described effect? And yes, I'm currently trying a calibration cycle but I have some doubts that it will save the day.

• Embedded linux Development learning

  I come from a windows background and i am proficient with the .net platform. For work, i need to bring up a custom embedded system platform. We have bought the pandaboard ES as the test platform. The application is to stream images over the wifi. If you think about it, we are building something similar to a netgear router - the only difference being when you log into the device it serves images. Because my background is in windows i am not quite sure how to start off with embedded linux development. in reading through various sites i have come to the conclusion that going to linux as development host is the best option. Can some one point to me in the right direction regarding the set up. I have a windows machine that will be used for development purposes. I can either do a virtual box or setup a partition for linux. But the finer details are what throwing me off..what i need to know is 1) once i install linux what other software do I need - Code blocks, 2) what about toolchain 3) How to debug - through serial port ? 4) Is there a way to send the image built directly to the CF card? • DBan not working because disk has bad sectors? [migrated]

  Attempting to wipe the drive of a laptop that I have before it's sold, and normally use DBAN to do so. However this time it starts and then finishes instantly with the following message. "DBAN finished with non-fatal errors This is usually cause by disks with bad sectors" Have tried multiple flags such as noverify to force it to skip this check (it doesn't show bad sectors in the OS scan in windows). but the error always comes back. This is the only time that I've seen this message, as every other of the few drives I've used this software on usually take 3-5 hours to do their job.

• Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-Install RPM for Oracle Linux 6 has been released

  Now that the certification of the Oracle Database 11g R2 with Oracle Linux 6 and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel has been announced, we are glad to announce the availability of oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall, the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM package (formerly known as oracle-validated). Designed specifically for Oracle Linux 6, this RPM aids in the installation of the Oracle Database. In order to install the Oracle Database 11g R2 on Oracle Linux 6, your system needs to meet a few prerequisites, as outlined in the Linux Installation Guides. Using the Oracle RDBMS Server 11gR2 Pre-install RPM, you can complete most of the pre-installation configuration tasks. which is now available from the Unbreakable Linux Network, or via the Oracle public yum repository. The pre-install package is available for x86_64 only. Specifically, the package: Causes the download and installation of various software packages and specific versions needed for database installation, with package dependencies resolved via yum Creates the user oracle and the groups oinstall and dba, which are the defaults used during database installation Modifies kernel parameters in /etc/sysctl.conf to change settings for shared memory, semaphores, the maximum number of file descriptors, and so on Sets hard and soft shell resource limits in /etc/security/limits.conf, such as the number of open files, the number of processes, and stack size to the minimum required based on the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Server installation requirements Sets numa=off in the kernel boot parameters for x86_64 machines Please see the release announcement for further details and instructions. • Upgrading openSUSE 11.1 with Plesk Panel 9.3 to PHP 5.3

  I'm running a VPS with openSUSE 11.1 (i586). On the VPS is Parallels Plesk Panel 9.3.0 installed. The current PHP-version is PHP 5.2.11. I want to upgrade PHP to PHP 5.3, but I can't find good instructions on how to do this. If I check for updates in Zypper, it says this is the latest release. In the Plesk Updates isn't an update either, both via the webbased interface and the command line interface. On Software.openSUSE.org I can find packages for PHP 5.3.1 in both the server:php/server_apache_openSUSE_11.1-repo and the server:php/openSUSE_11.1-repo (can't post the link because I'm a newbie here). But if I add one of those to Zypper, I still don't see an update. Is there here somebody who knows how to do this? And is it completely safe to update that way? I don't want to end up with a broken VPS... Thanks! Jonathan

• How to fix AVI index error

  I try to open an AVI file. The first software I tried is VLC media player. It reports some error about AVI index: This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try to fix it? This might take a long time. I chose yes, and it began fixing AVI index and existed when the repair progress bar reaches 20% or so. Then the video started playing and stopped much earlier than when it is supposed to finish. Next I tried to open it in Totem Movie Player, which also stopped earlier at the same place as in VLC player. I tried to play it in GMplayer. Now the entire AVI file can be played from start to finish, but it is impossible to drag playing progress bar while it was possible in VLC player and Totem player. I heard that Avidemux can fix AVI index error, but later discovered it failed to open the AVI file. So I was wondering how I can fix the AVI index error, or at least drag the playing progress bar in GMplayer? Thanks and regards!

• Eclipse dissapears when minimized and will not come back (12.04 Unity)

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 running Unity3d. I downloaded Eclipse from eclipse.org (not the software center) and created a desktop using gnome-desktop-item-edit. The resulting file is below, and I added it to the launcher on the left of the screen by dragging that file on. #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Icon[en_US]=/home/kevin/eclipse/icon.xpm Name[en_US]=Eclipse Exec=/home/kevin/eclipse/eclipse Name=Eclipse Icon=/home/kevin/eclipse/icon.xpm#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open However, when I minimize eclipse, eclipse disappears. There is no arrow to the left of the icon in the launcher like usual. And when I click on the launcher again, it tries to relaunch eclipse instead of bringing back the one that was minimized. Eclipse also does not show up when I alt-tab. I know it is still running because I can see it running with the system monitor. Note that Eclipse works properly until it is minimized. I have observed this behavior on two different computers now. Does anyone know how to fix it?

• Coding in large chunks ... Code verification skills

  As a follow up to my prev question: What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment To recap: I am stuck with a large software system with which a TDD ideology of "test often" does not work. And to make it even worse the features like pre-compiled headers/multi-threaded compilation/incremental linking, etc is not available to me - hence I think that the best way out would be to add the extensive logging into the system and to start "coding in large chunks", which I understand as code for a two-three hours first (as opposed to 15-20 mins in TDD) - thoroughly eyeball the code for a 15 minutes and only after all that do the compilation and run the tests. As I have been doing TDD for a quite a while, my code eyeballing / code verification skills got rusty (you don't really need this that much if you can quickly verify what you've done in 5 seconds by running a test or two) - so I am after a recommendations on how to learn these source code verification/error spotting skills again. I know I was able to do that easily some 5-10 years ago when I din't have much support from the compiler/unit testing tools I had until recently, thus there should be a way to get back to the basics.

• How to detect APC UPS battery usage and run a script when on battery

  I have a couple APC UPS - Smart-UPS RT 6000 RM XL Smart-UPS RT 5000 RM XL Unfortunately the power in my office likes to go out (out of my control) and hence the equipment powered by these UPS shuts down. They power a VMware infrastructure environment (VMware Lab Manager) and what I'd like to do is detect when one is on battery (say has been for x amount of time or has x percentage left) and run a script on this event. What software do I need to detect a on-battery event and have it run a script? Thanks!

• Redhat with a reverse proxy, a specific configuration

  The setup I am trying to put together consists on a server connected to the internet (a redhat box) and 2 Apache Tomcat boxes not connected to the internet. Let's call the server Server and the two Apache Tomcats, Apache1 and Apache2. So, assuming my external IP is 102.1.1.1, Apache1 is 10.1.1.1 and Apache2 is 10.1.1.2, what I'm trying to configure is a reverse proxy so that if the request goes into http://102.1.1.1/mywebserver1/ it will be directed to Apache1 and if the request goes into http://102.1.1.1/mywebserver2/ it will be forwarded to Apache2. Now, I don't need a cache on the proxy since there is application sitting in those tomcats and each request needs to get a fresh answer. I searched for a while and I tried building this with Squid but i can't get it to work the way I need it. Anyone knows how to do this? What software do I need? How do I configure the reverse proxy?   I recently purchased a new Acer S201hl monitor. Many lay reviews compliment its color accuracy with people noting only a bit of a blueish tinge. After a little time, Windows found, and I installed, the Acer drivers via Microsoft Update. During the installation process, the software installed an ICC profile for the monitor from Acer. I recently noticed that when I view photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the colors are wrong. For example, grayscale document scans appear with yellow backgrounds instead of white backgrounds. This happens with both my external monitors and my ThinkPad's built-in screen. When I removed the monitor-specific profile from the list of profiles associated with a monitor (for example, removing the Acer profile from the Acer monitor), the problem went away for that screen. I checked with Microsoft KB939395 and though it says "an incorrect color profile [...] is used for the monitor," the profile associated with my ThinkPad's screen seemed to be correct, based on its name.

• E a qualidade por trás?

  Olá pessoal! Hoje o assunto não é código, mas sim a qualidade dele. Recentemente aqui na NBR começamos com um cliente um contrato de manutenção e migração de 2 projetos existentes. A nossa surpresa aconteceu quando tivemos acesso ao código-fonte dos projetos. E aí entra o assunto deste post… Quão importante é a qualidade do código-fonte nos projetos? A grande questão aqui neste caso específico é a seguinte: o layout é aceitável, planejado, onde pudemos perceber certa preocupação. Mas e o código por trás? Entre GoTo, banco de dados em Access, MySql e SQL Server no mesmo projeto (sem necessidade), abordagem 100% procedural, sem reutilização de código e ambientes dinâmicos, este post é mais um desabafo e uma preocupação do que qualquer coisa. Nós como desenvolvedores natos temos que ter uma preocupação básica: estou fazendo meu trabalho corretamente ou estou me livrando dele? Muitos clientes não analisam o código por trás dos seus projetos. Basta a interface cumprir o que foi prometido (ou quase cumprir) que está tudo certo. E qual é o preço de um código mal feito? A manutenção é tão importante quando o desenvolvimento de um novo projeto. O ponto mestre é defender isto para os possíveis clientes e provar, para os já clientes, que isto tem valor. No nosso dia-a-dia tentamos apresentar aos clientes (quando eles estão interessados) que nosso código é bem feito. E isto não depende do projeto, do cliente ou do desenvolvedor: uma interface bem feita é tão importante quanto seu código. Qualquer um dos dois pode acabar com seu projeto. Mas confesso que o mais dificil nisto tudo é defender que a qualidade tem preço e a sua importancia, para aqueles clientes que acham que não é necessário. Como você defende este ponto de vista? Vamos deixar claro: software bem feito não é barato! E definitivamente não existe a opção “sem qualidade”. Abraços!
