• How to find out if the screen is WLED or RGBLED on Dell Studio XPS 16?

  I just ordered the Dell Studio XPS 16 with i7 and 16" RGBLED screen. This upgrade from WLED LCD to RGBLED LCD charged me more $$. But now when I view the order online, it lists this part as "320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam". When called Dell, the rep says this part is RGBLED screen and the "premium" is for RGBLED. I want to make sure they are shipping me the RGBLED screen and not the WLED. Is there any way to verify this after I receive (either from Device Manager or BIOS or somewhere in system settings)? Also, is there any published specifications / criteria that we can run (some third party software) on this monitor which can tell if this is WLED or RGBLED?

  I'm giving a presentation later this week to the staff at the company where I work. The goal of the presentation is to serve as a refresher/remidner of good practices that can help keep our network secure. The audience is made up of both programmers and non-technical staff, so the presentation is geared for non-technical users. I want part of this presentation to be a top list of "tips". The list needs to be short (to encourage memory) and be specific and relevant to the user. I have the following five items so far: Never open an attachment you didn't expect Only download software from a trusted source, like download.com Do not distribute passwords when requested via phone or email Be wary of social engineering Do not store sensitive data on an FTP server Some clarifications: This is for our work network These need to be "best practices" tips for the end-user, not IT policy We have backups, OS patches, firewall, AV, etc, all centrally managed This is for a small business (less than 25 people) I have two questions: Do you suggest any additional items? • Local network cache of PHP and Apache2 on Win Server 2008 R2

  Software configuration : I have a new server with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed via VMWare. I have installed Apache2.2, PHP5.2 and MySQL5.5 as separate packages. Issue : On my first installation of my application, all works great. When I updated some JS and CSS files and accessed my application again from a PC on local network, I got the old JS and CSS versions. When I access the same application on local server I got the latest versions of those files. Link of my application on local server is : http://localhost/BADIL Link of my application from local network is : http://LOCAL_SERVER_IP/BADIL I think that must be some cache but I don't know where. Maybe on Win Server 2008 R2 or on VMWare? The question is: Why, when I access my application on the server, everything works fine, but when I access the same application from a local network, I do not see the updated versions of JS and CSS files?

• DBan not working because disk has bad sectors? [migrated]

  Attempting to wipe the drive of a laptop that I have before it's sold, and normally use DBAN to do so. However this time it starts and then finishes instantly with the following message. "DBAN finished with non-fatal errors This is usually cause by disks with bad sectors" Have tried multiple flags such as noverify to force it to skip this check (it doesn't show bad sectors in the OS scan in windows). but the error always comes back. This is the only time that I've seen this message, as every other of the few drives I've used this software on usually take 3-5 hours to do their job.

• I install Ubuntu 13.10 and reboot and im on KDE desktop?

  Hi I'm Jacob and I have no idea what's going on. I installed Ubuntu 13.10 today and was playing around with it for a while and dl'd a bunch of apps from software center and stuff. Eventually I installed steam and (finally) got it working. I downloaded TF2 and had some weird issue where the screen got so distorted to the point I could not play. So I dl'd a driver for my graphics card from the additional drivers app (or whatever it's called) and when it was done I restarted my computer (because it said to.) When the PC booted up it loaded the KDE desktop and I have no idea why. I had unity before I rebooted. Ubuntu 13.10 is the only OS installed on my PC, and I still have all the apps that I downloaded, but I kinda like unity (I started using Ubuntu after they switched to unity) and want it back.   Olá pessoal! Hoje o assunto não é código, mas sim a qualidade dele. Recentemente aqui na NBR começamos com um cliente um contrato de manutenção e migração de 2 projetos existentes. A nossa surpresa aconteceu quando tivemos acesso ao código-fonte dos projetos. E aí entra o assunto deste post… Quão importante é a qualidade do código-fonte nos projetos? A grande questão aqui neste caso específico é a seguinte: o layout é aceitável, planejado, onde pudemos perceber certa preocupação. Mas e o código por trás? Entre GoTo, banco de dados em Access, MySql e SQL Server no mesmo projeto (sem necessidade), abordagem 100% procedural, sem reutilização de código e ambientes dinâmicos, este post é mais um desabafo e uma preocupação do que qualquer coisa. Nós como desenvolvedores natos temos que ter uma preocupação básica: estou fazendo meu trabalho corretamente ou estou me livrando dele? Muitos clientes não analisam o código por trás dos seus projetos. Basta a interface cumprir o que foi prometido (ou quase cumprir) que está tudo certo. E qual é o preço de um código mal feito? A manutenção é tão importante quando o desenvolvimento de um novo projeto. O ponto mestre é defender isto para os possíveis clientes e provar, para os já clientes, que isto tem valor. No nosso dia-a-dia tentamos apresentar aos clientes (quando eles estão interessados) que nosso código é bem feito. E isto não depende do projeto, do cliente ou do desenvolvedor: uma interface bem feita é tão importante quanto seu código. Qualquer um dos dois pode acabar com seu projeto. Mas confesso que o mais dificil nisto tudo é defender que a qualidade tem preço e a sua importancia, para aqueles clientes que acham que não é necessário. Como você defende este ponto de vista? Vamos deixar claro: software bem feito não é barato! E definitivamente não existe a opção “sem qualidade”. Abraços!

• Upgrading openSUSE 11.1 with Plesk Panel 9.3 to PHP 5.3

  I'm running a VPS with openSUSE 11.1 (i586). On the VPS is Parallels Plesk Panel 9.3.0 installed. The current PHP-version is PHP 5.2.11. I want to upgrade PHP to PHP 5.3, but I can't find good instructions on how to do this. If I check for updates in Zypper, it says this is the latest release. In the Plesk Updates isn't an update either, both via the webbased interface and the command line interface. On Software.openSUSE.org I can find packages for PHP 5.3.1 in both the server:php/server_apache_openSUSE_11.1-repo and the server:php/openSUSE_11.1-repo (can't post the link because I'm a newbie here). But if I add one of those to Zypper, I still don't see an update. Is there here somebody who knows how to do this? And is it completely safe to update that way? I don't want to end up with a broken VPS... Thanks! Jonathan

• Need to store and backup HD vid files. But need to access them alot.

  I've had my 700 Gb HDD ever since I bought my computer so partitioning it is out of the question. What I need is a place to keep my HD vid files so when I edit, I don't get a long load time in the editing software. But I also need to keep a back-up of all my other important files which I haven't been doing. Should I buy an additional internal drive JUST for vid files and buy an external for backup of all my files? What are my best options?

  One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it. • how do I match movement of an object from 2d video into a 3d package ?

  I'm trying to add objects in a 3d package(Blender) using recorded footage. I've played with Icarus and it's great to capture the camera movement. Also the Blender 2.41 importer script works in Blender 2.49 as well. The problem is I can't seem to get 3d coordinates for objects. I have tried Autodesk(RealVIZ) MatchMover 2011 and gone through the tutorials. Tutorial 3 shows how to link a vertex from a 3d mesh to a 2d trackpoint, but the setup is for camera movement. Tutorial 4 goes into Motion capture, but it uses 2 videos of the same motion taken with 2 cameras from different viewpoints. I've tried to bypass that using the same footage twice, but that failed, as the 3d coordinate system ends up messed up. What software do you recommend for this (mapping 3d coordinates to 2d tracked points and importing them into a 3d package) ? What is the recommended technique ? Any good examples out there ?   I have a couple APC UPS - Smart-UPS RT 6000 RM XL Smart-UPS RT 5000 RM XL Unfortunately the power in my office likes to go out (out of my control) and hence the equipment powered by these UPS shuts down. They power a VMware infrastructure environment (VMware Lab Manager) and what I'd like to do is detect when one is on battery (say has been for x amount of time or has x percentage left) and run a script on this event. What software do I need to detect a on-battery event and have it run a script? Thanks!

  Getting from client/server based 4GLs and databases where the 4GL is tightly linked to the database to Oracle and the cloud is not easy. The least risky and expensive option (in the short term) is to use the Progress OpenEdge DataServer for Oracle: Progress OpenEdge DataServer This eliminates the need to have to migrate the Progress 4GL to Java/J2EE. The database can be migrated using SQLWays Ispirer: Ispirer SQLWays ProgressDB migrations tool The Progress 4GL can remain as is. In order to get the application on the cloud there are a few approaches: 1. VDI - Virtual Desktop is a way to put all of the users desktop in a centralized environment off the desktop. This is great in cases where it is just not one client/server application that the user needs access too. In many cases, users will utilize MS Access, MS Excel, Crystal Reports and other tools to get at the Progress DB and other centralized databases. Vmware's acquistion of Wanova shows how VDI is growing in usage. Citrix is the 800 pound gorilla in the VDI space with Citrix WinFrame (now called XenDesktop). Oracle offers a VDI solution that Oracle picked up when it acquired Sun. 2. Hypervisor Server Virtualization - Of course you can place applications written in client/server languages like Progress 4GL buy using server virtualization from Oracle, VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix and others. 3. • MySQL 5.1.49 freezing every two days

  Hi all, our mysql system is "freezing" every two days. By "freezing" i mean the following: it doesn't respond to ping we can't login with SSH we don't get any answer from MySQL there is no entry in the error logs! neither from linux neither from MySQL. we have already changed to a completely new hardware, we have the same problem, so it's definitely not a hardware problem. we do not have any other software installed except a firewall (iptables rule) we can restart the server from another server using rsyslog (www.rsyslog.com)(software reset) Could someone help me, by giving me some pointers what could i do to figure out the problem? In his update of Brian Leonard's original Taking Your First Steps With Oracle Solaris, Glynn Foster walks you through the most basic steps required to get a version of Oracle Solaris 11 operational: Installing Solaris (VirtualBox, bare metal, or multi-boot) Managing users (root role, sudo command) Managing services with SMF (svcs and svcadm) Connecting to the network (with SMF or manually via dladm and ipadm) Figuring out the directory structure Updating software (with the IPS GUI or the pkg command) Managing package repositories Creating and managing additional boot environments One of the things you'll have to consider as you install Solaris 11 on an x86 system is whether Solaris has the proper drivers for the devices on your system. In the section titled "Installing On Bare Metal as a Standalone System," Glynn shows you how to use the Device Driver utility that's included with the Graphical Installer. However, if you want to get that information before you start installing Solaris 11 on your x86 system, you can consult the x86 Device List that's part of the Oracle Solaris Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). Here's how: Open the Device List. Scroll down to the table. Open the "Select Release" pull-down menu and pick "Solaris 11 11/11." Move over to the "Select Device Type" pull-down menu, and pick the device type. Or "All." The table will list all the devices of that type that are supported by Solaris 11, including PCI ID and vendor.   Hi, I am looking for a way to clone single disk drive to more than one disk drive at the same time. I have prepared system images on 1TB disks, and it takes almost 2 hours to clone one disk to another, and then it goes up exponentially, in order to have say 30 disks cloned. If it was possible to clone one disk to more than single target, it would simplify whole procedure a lot. Also, is there something that prevents this kind of operation? I mean, is there some special reason why every disk cloning software that I know about supports only single target drive? Thanks!

Next, the describe which is a RSpec keyword. The before does exactly the same as NUnit's Setup or MsTest’s TestInitialize attribute, but in the above we are using before(:all) which acts as ClassInitialize of MsTest, that means it will be executed only once before all the test methods. In the before(:all) we are first instantiating the from and to accounts, it is same as creating with the full name (including namespace)  like fromAccount = new FundTransfer.Account(.., ..), next, we are creating a mock object of ICurrencyConvertionService, check that for creating the mock we are not using the Moq like the MSpec version. This is somewhat an interesting issue of IronRuby or maybe the DLR, it seems that it is not possible to use the lambda expression that most of the mocking tools uses in arrange phase in Iron Ruby, like: currencyConvertionService.Setup(ccv => ccv.GetConvertionRate(Moq.It.IsAny<string>(), Moq.It.IsAny<string>())).Returns(ConvertionRate); But the good news is, there is already an excellent mocking tool called Caricature written completely in IronRuby which we can use to mock the .NET classes. May be all the mocking tool providers should give some thought to add the support for the DLR, so that we can use the tool that we are already familiar with. I think the rest of the code is too simple, so I am skipping the explanation. Now, the last thing, how we are going to run it with RSpec, lets first install the required gems. Open you command prompt and type the following: igem sources -a http://gems.github.com This will add the GitHub as gem source. Next type: igem install uuidtools caricature rspec and at last we have to create a batch file so that we can execute it in the Notepad++, create a batch like in the IronRuby bin directory like my previous post and put the following in that batch file: @echo off cls call spec %1 --format specdoc pause Next, add a run menu and shortcut in the Notepad++ like my previous post.
