• Barracuda spam filter alternative - virtualization/appliance friendly?

  I've sold and deployed Barracuda spam and web filters for years. I've always thought that the functionality was good (Barracuda Central, easy interface, effective filtering), but the hardware on the entry to midrange units is a weak point. They have single power supplies, no RAID and limited monitoring support. Personally, I think Barracuda would make a killing selling their software as a VMWare appliance, but I'm looking for something similar that I can deploy as a consultant, but will be easy for customers to manage. It should have support for server-grade hardware or the ability to be deployed as a virtual machine. Is there anything out there that's close?

• Keyboard automatically disconnects and reconnects

  The problem i am facing is the keyboard (USB) automatically disconnects when there is a fluctuation in the power supply to the speaker. The speaker and the pc both draw power from a apc ups. The fluctuation occurs because the speaker plug is not tightly connected to the ups power outlet. It is okay for normal work, but a accidental jerk causes the fluctuation. However after some amount of time (usually within 5 seconds) the keyboard automatically reconnects and windows plays the sound of hardware connected. This problem will also occur if I manually take out the speaker power cable from the ups power outlet. My question is whether the problem I am facing is due to electrical issues, or due to software problems. PC config: OS : Windows 7 Ultimate UPS : APC 600 VA PSU : Corsair TX 650 Speaker : Realtek

• Apache has a 2GB file limit on a CIFS network drive?

  Setup: A Windows and a Ubuntu Server are hosted in VMware ESXi I have a a 6GB file on a Windows share The Windows share is mount on Ubuntu with smbmount A symlink pointing to the 6GB file is created in a public_html directory, which is readable by Apache The problem: wget gets an error Connection closed at byte 2130706432. Retrying. after downloading 2130706432 bytes (exactly 2032 MiB, and is the same every time) Apache returns 206 Partial Content without showing any errors in the log Same error even if I download from localhost Similar error when Firefox is used instead of wget No error if I md5sum or cp the file on Ubuntu, suggesting that smbmount and the Windows Server are OK with 6GB files. No error if Apache serve a 6GB file from the local disk, suggesting that Apache has no problems handling 6GB files. Any ideas why Apache/symlink/smbmount/Windows would cause an error when used together? How can I fix the problem? Software used: VMware ESXi 4 Update 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 Ubuntu 8.04 Server, vmxnet3 Apache 2.2.8 mount.cifs 1.10-3.0.28a

• Home ZFS based NAS...What processor/chipset to use?

  So, I'm building a home/personal NAS. My plan is to expose both SMB fileshares for sharing files/media between hosts, but also to carve an iSCSI target LUN out of it for use by VMWare as a datastore. I want to use ZFS (software RAID) so that means I'll either be using FreeNAS, Solaris Express, or OpenIndiana. My question is basically: How much horsepower do I need? Obviously I/O is going to be my bottleneck but I want to be sure that I am not limiting my I/O because of a slow processor or chipset. So far the hardware plan is to use an Intel i3 and motherboard with one of the H87, Q87, or Z87 chipsets, a SAS controller (JBOD, no RAID) and if budget allows, I'm also hoping to get an SSD for the ZFS L2ARC and ZIL. Does anyone think I could get away with an Intel Atom or cheaper/less-capable processor/chipset than the i3 and [HQZ]87 listed above?

• How can you connect three external displays to a laptop with only one vga or dvi port and plenty of

  I have had some success with usb docks like this Universal Docking Station by Kensington to connect one external display to my laptop while using the onboard vga port for another display. But that's only two displays and I'm shooting for three. All I do is develop software and work in Photoshop... no games. For the sake of discussion, we can assume a Thinkpad or equivalent laptop with Windows 7 (I'm hoping for a platform-agnostic solution). How could I do this?

• Merging partitions and removing windows of one partition

  I have two partitions on my laptop, I created a new one when installing windows 8 pro because windows 7 wouldn't upgrade to it for some odd reason. The main partition, which has 631 GB ( has windows 7 installed on it, and the second partition is 49.9 GB and has windows 8 installed on it. What I need to do is remove windows 7 from the other one (Yeah its dual booting), make it so it boots straight into windows 8, without showing the dual boot screen, and also merge the two drives together. Only problem is, I have no idea how to do this. Please don't use complete lamens terms, I am a software developer so I know at least a bit about computers.   Do you need an easy way to view word definitions while browsing with Internet Explorer? The Define with Bing Accelerator will display definitions in the same (or a new) tab and save you time while browsing. Using Define with Bing The installation consists of two steps. First, click on Add to Internet Explorer to start the process. Next you will be asked to confirm the installation. Once you have clicked Add your new accelerator is ready to use (no browser restart required). Whenever you encounter a word that needs defining highlight it, click on the small blue square, go to All Accelerators, and then Define with Bing. There are two ways to access the definition: Hover your mouse over the Define with Bing text to open a small popup window Click on Define with Bing to open a definition search in a new tab Being able to access a definition or explanation in the same tab will definitely save you time while browsing. In the example shown here you can get an idea of what SCORM means but clicking on the links inside the popup window is not recommended (webpage opens in popup and is not resizable). In the situation shown above it is better to click on Define with Bing and see more information in a new tab. Conclusion The Define with Bing Accelerator can be a very useful time saver while browsing with Internet Explorer. Finding those word definitions will be a much more pleasant experience now. Error in ==> ttest at 104 xmean = nanmean(x,dim); However if I use the same statement in Matlab in another computer, then its working fine and giving results. Do you know what could be the problem? • Primary domain controller has crashed, secondary does not log in

  Hi everybody, I had a primary domain controller on machine A and a secondary one on machine B in my AD domain. Due to some hardware/software problems, I decided to migrate the role of primary domain controller to machine B. Unfortunately, machine A has totally crashed and does not boot. Now I can not even log in to machine B (which itself was a controller in the domain). I need to log into machine B then choose it as the primary controller. I already have synced DNS and AD info. when machine A was alive. Anyone can provide an idea?

• How do special folders work on Windows 7?

  Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

• How can you invert the colors of a PDF?

  I need to invert all the colors of a PDF document (background, text, graphics, and images). I want it persistent in the file so the inverted viewing options, that some viewers offer, won't help. Rasterizing the document and using image manipulation software is also not an option. I read somewhere that this can be done with the Enfocus PitStop plugin for Acrobat. However I didn't see a corresponding command anywhere. Am I missing something? Then I read that the ARTS PDF Crackerjack plugin for Acrobat offers negative printing so I tried that, too. The option is there but it simply doesn't work. I have been searching for very long for a way to do this. It seems like a common enough task but I just can't find out how to do it. Are there maybe any virtual printer drivers or something of the sort that support negative printing? Can anyone help?

• /usr/bin/python Replacement

  If I've changed the target of /usr/bin/python from /usr/bin/python2.7 to /usr/bin/python3.2 (I realize this was an ABSOUTELY HORRIBLE idea) in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. Afterwards, several applications, including software-center and update-manager have stopped working. Insofar as I can tell, this is because they are written in Python2.7. I replaced the default /usr/bin/python shebang with the 2.7 one, and this fixes them on the application level. Switching /usr/bin/python back to /usr/bin/python2.7 really isn't an option, but is there a list of all applications installed by default in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, if installed from a new CD-R, that use a shebang of #!/usr/bin/python instead of #!/usr/bin/pythonX.Y?

• Any Way to monitor JMX Servers with NetIq ?

  I ask this question after a search in the site, there's many JMX questions but I think no one with a NetIq involved. In the documentation of NetIq, There's no "module" to check JMX, but I have seen that u can make "custom" modules and "custom" scripts, in Perl and VbScript. The question is if anyone with more experience than me on NetIq, has made any custom script or module to check JMX. I look on technet too, for a JMX Api for Windos Shell or Powershell with no luck. Of course, JMX is much more powerfull, but what I really need is to "monitor" some values inside NetIq, because we cant install Nagios, Cacti, Hyperic or any other monitor software but NetIq.   I was testing Windows 8 release preview and came across several bugs. One of my friends suggested letting Microsoft know through Microsft Connect. So I went to this web site: connect.microsoft.com I don't think that I'm a stupid person. I'm pretty good at figuring software and websites out, but this one beats me.... So I click on the "Products currently accepting bugs" link and get a long list of products. First off, most of those names is something that I've never heard before. Then I try searching the page for Windows 8 and ... find nothing :) Can someone explain in one or two sentences how to submit bugs to Microsoft?

• Transfer used ram to swap and free more physical ram

  I have a vps with 256m physical ram and 512m swap space, I am trying to use a software that need more than 256m and less than 512m ram, so it uses swap. The problem is at some moment of the installation, the installation process checks the available physical ram, it's full (some swap is used), so it pauses the installation and tills that it must be some more ram to continue the installation.. I see that I need to move some of used physical ram to swap while the process is running.. Is there anyway I can do that? or any other solution! For sorry I am using openvz vps, and the vm.swappiness option can't be modified as a solution.

• PPTPD with PAM authentication?

  I need a VPN solution for my company. One requirement is to be able to use the built-in windows VPN client. We are running a Debian Etch server. I've managed to set up PPTPD but the authentication is based on the chap-secrets file. We already have all the user accounts set up on the server, so it'd be nice to use PAM authentication to get user/pass directly from the unix login. Is this possible to achieve and how? If not, is there any other VPN solution that can do this? Don't tell me OpenVPN, it needs additional software to be installed on the Windows machines. :)

  Microsoft announced that it has sold over 1.5 million windows 7 phone devices. Windows 7 is a new generation of OS. Mobile operators/users/device programmers need to adopt the same. Its not going to be a easy transition because it’s not an advanced/next version of win 6.x for mobile. We have heard that development from Microsoft side for Win 6.x devices will not continue after sometime. Don’t know how long will get the support! Everything in it s quite new, like OS, User interface, XBox sync, and also requires mobile phone companies to run the OS on high end chips, meaning atleast 1GHz. So the user segment occupied by phones like HTC Wild Fire are not the ones targeted.   Hey ! There an is a catch with this magic number 1.5 million…. It depicts only the number of units sold to mobile operators and retailers. It’s not the number of actual units held in consumers hands and activated. The number could improve significantly in 2011 where Sprint and Verizon join the party in United States. Atleast dozen phone models are in line up now in the rest of the world running Win 7 OS. One good things that customers can rejoice is that Microsoft will direly push software updates to all its consumers. Operator will not interfere. We can expect strong sales going forward with just this important point where Google’s Android lacks the same.   So, I’ve recently changed jobs. Rather than working in .NET land, I’ve migrated over to Java land. But never fear! I’ll continue to peer under the covers of .NET, but my next series will use my new experience in Java to explore the design decisions made in the development of the C# programming language. After all, the design of C# was based on Java 1.2, and both languages have continued to evolve since then, incorporating modern software engineering concepts and requirements. Exploring the differences and similarities between the two will (hopefully) give us a deeper understanding into why .NET is implemented the way it is, the trade-offs involved, and what choices were made when new features were designed and added to the language and framework. Among others, I’ll be looking at differences in: Primitives Operators Generics Exceptions Accessibility Collections Delegates and inner classes Concurrency In my next post, I’ll start off by looking at the type primitives available in each language, and how Java and C# actually incorporate two different concepts of primitive types in their fundamental language design and use. I’m also thinking of looking at the inner details of Java and the JVM in my blogs, as well as C# and the CLR. If you’ve got any comments or thoughts on this, please let me know.

• Create a Windows Image for Deployment

  In my company we have 8 laptops that we use to deploy on the field. These machines get assigned to a user for a certain time and run Windows Vista. All the machines are the same model. After the machine is returned, it is company policy to completely format the machine and go back to a predetermined configuration. Right now, what we do is we use the recovery utility in the laptop (we are a small shop so we use the OEM Windows license that the laptops come with) and manually uninstall and change the configuration in order to bring it to our baseline config. I know that there are ways to create an image that gets copied to the hard drive with a specific configuration and with specific software installed (thats what OEMs do right?). I'm looking for a tool or a tutorial or something that explains as simply as possible how to create such an image. Thanks a lot

  Hi All, Just wondering, I want to set up a basic web server at home. I run Windows (XP on the machine to be a server), however I also have Ubuntu on hand if I need to run that. Basically I was wondering if there are any large difference between WAMP servers and LAMP servers? I know the run virtually the same software, but does one perform better than the other? Are there hidden benefits of running it in Ubuntu instead of XP, or the other way around? I know its a basic question, but I havent done anything with Ubuntu, and Ive done about the same amount with web server-ing. Thanks!
