• My C# program running as Windows Service is blocking Windows XP from hibernation

  I have Windows Service written in C#. It starts two threads, one is pooling a Web Service, second is waiting on a Monitor object for a new job to arrive. Besides that, the main thread acts as a WCF service host using NetNamedPipeBinding. It lets the client application to register a callback and then sends notifications back. The problem I have is that when this Windows Service is running, I cannot hibernate or Standby my computer which is running on Windows XP, SP3. When I set Windows to hibernate or standby, nothing happens. Then, at the moment when I go to Service Manager and stop the service, the system hibernation starts immediately. The service class extending the ServiceBase has properties like CanHandlePowerEvent, CanPauseAndContinue, etc. set to true... That didn't make any difference. The question is: what can be blocking the Hibernation/Standby from proceeding? What should I take care about to avoid it?

• How to extract all IDs accessed from a mysql general log using the linux commandline?

  This should be a trivial question for anyone who's good with bash/sed/awk. Unfortunately, I'm not, yet :) I've got a general log from MySQL which contains some queries that have a common parameter, they query on a specific id field. The queries look like update tbl set col='binary_values' where id=X; I need to process the log and extract all the IDs that these queries touched, each in it's own line. The purpose of this is to figure out how many times each ID is accessed. Eventually I'd group and count the values. The binary values are indeed binary junk, so they kinda messed up some things I've been trying to do. Eventually we solved the problem temporarily using a python script, but I'm sure the linux command line tool set can do it too. How would you do it?

What's wrong with this?

• HTML stops at a PHP script made to connect to a mysql database. No errors printed.

  I'm trying to set up a login script for PHP using the tutorial on this site. The problem is that the site stops when it hits these lines, no error, no text: <?php $conn = mysql_connect('localhost', 'root', 'password') or die('error line7' . mysql_error()); mysql_select_db('mydb', $conn) or die('error line8' . mysql_error()); ?> If I take out these lines, the rest of the html runs perfectly. I've double checked my passwords and everything, nothing is working. I know very little about php and mysql other than what I've learned trying to set this up.

  Hi all, I have the following set-up: A Window that has a splitView in which I display I NSCollectionView in the left view and a detailView in the right view. Both views are set-up in separate xibs. Furthermore I have a Datacontroller (of class NSArrayController) that manages a mutable Array of NSMutableDictionaries (moviesForChoice). The dataController is set-up as application delegate. The movie objects in the array have properties like (name, plot, genre etc.) so far so good... In the xib for the NScollectionview I bound a NSArraycontroller content property to my datacontroller via Application.delegate.moviesForChoice The collectionView accesses the arraycontroller.arrrangedObjects and arraycontroller.selectionIndexes. This works fine the contents are displayed and the selection works fine in the collectionview (my collectionviewItem renders a selection color) In the xib for the detailView I want to display information for the selected object in the collectionview. Therefore I also added an arraycontroller to the xib, bound the content aray to Application.delegate.moviesForChoice and bound the NSTextfields in the view to e.g. arraycontroller.selection.name Here comes my issue: everytime I open the window with the two xibs, my collectionview displays all movies that are for choice correctly, and the detailview displays the information for the 1st object in my collectionview. Whenever I click on a different movie in the collectionView the res. item renders a selection color, but the detailView doesn't update. My understanding of it would be that the DataController is not informed about updates in the selectionIndexes and can therefore not trigger an update in the detailView. Correct me if I'm wrong... To remedy this I tried to bind the selectionIndexes property of the arraycontroller in the collectionView xib to Application.delegate.moviesForChoice.selecionIndexes but this failed with: addObserver:forKeyPath:options:context:] is not supported.   When I run this method the two properties I have are set to (NULL) when I try and access them outside of the if statement. • Whats the best method for queuing time-sensitive messages with PHP/MySQL?

  I'm building an SMS call and response system in a new app that receives a message via an aggregator gateway, checks it for functional keywords (run, stop, ask, etc), then processes it appropriately (save to the database, return an answer, or execute a task based on the users authorization). It's running fine at the moment as there are only a few users, but I figure its going to have more issues as we scale it up. We're currently running it on a single DV machine (mediatemple base dv). My question is this: does it make more sense to set something up like Memcached to run a queue, or a simple database with a daemon running to process each message one by one? I don't have much experience with either, so any advice would be helpful. Since the messaging is somewhat time-sensitive, what would be the fastest and most reliable way to handle this? Also, since we're sending responses, I'll probably need to set up and outbound message queue as well. Would it make sense to use the same concept for both?

  In my latest code, I have an event handler for a focus on a textarea. When the user clicks on the textarea, that event-handler is triggered which sets some other DOM states based on the selected textarea. However, elsewhere in my program I want to programmatically set the focus of the textarea without triggering that event handler. I know Backbone, for instance, has a way to silently perform an action. My only pseudo-solution is to temporarily set a variable: var silence = true; And then, in my event handler, only perform the logic if silence is false. The handler is still triggered, but the logic doesn't run. Does anyone else know of better strategies for this?

  I would like to track the value of a boolean (not Boolean) variable in the Eclips debugger. I need to know when it does change and, for this, i need to track it's value through all the execution; not only when it is in scope. More particularly i have a class (let's call it myClass) with a boolean member variable called isAvailable. My program instantiate 4 or 5 myClass objects. I am expecting that at the end of the execution the isAvailable value of all of my objects is set to true. Contrarily to my excpectation one of myClass objects has isAvailable set to false. I need to know which (in a lot of) methods is setting isAvailable to false.

• Some facebook friends' birthdays returning as null but I have the correct API permissions

  I'm tring to get my friends' birthdays in my app and some of them are null. I thought that those people don't have a birthday set, but they actually do. My fql query is: SELECT uid,name,birthday_date FROM user WHERE uid IN (SELECT uid2 from friend where uid1=me()) My app has the "friends_birthday" permission set. I also tried with "birthday" instead of "birthday_date". Same result. I imagine that this happens because they opted out somehow, but I don't know how. Is there an alternate solution to actually get their birthdays from facebook? Thanks!

  I've only discovered a month ago the folly of directly accessing entities / models from the data access layer of an n-tier app. After reading about ViewModels while studying ASP.NET MVC, I've come to understand that to make a truly extensible application the model that the UI layer interacts with must be different from the one that the Data Access layer has access to. But what about the Business layer? Should I have a different set of models for my business layer as well? For true separation of concern, should I have a specific set of models that are relevant only to my business layer so as not to mess around with any entities (possibly generated by for example, the entity framework, or EJB) in the DAL or would that be overkill?

• Drag and drop between HTML 5 and Silverlight 4

  Hi - Is it possible to drag an HTML 5 object, e.g. an , into a Silverlight 4 control and accept it? We've attempted to build a simple prototype using an HTML 5 example and a trivial Silverlight control but the cursor changes to the no-entry sign whenever we hover over the Silverlight control. We do, however, get drag entry events firing in Silverlight. Our control happily accepts files dragged from the desktop as expected. We think we've got the HTML 5 drag events set up correctly, and I can possibly get our test published somewhere in case that will help. We've successfully implemented dragging inside a Silverlight control but we now need to integrate with non-Silverlight page components. Is this actually possible to set up or are we just doing something wrong? Thanks for any advice!

  I currently have a form that I am building that needs to support two different versions. Each version might use a different subset of form fields. I have to do this to support two different clients, but I don't want to have entirely different controller actions for both. So, I am trying to come up with a way to use a strongly typed model with validation attributes but have some of these attributes be conditional. Some approaches I can think of is similar to steve sanderson's partial validation approach. Where I would clear the model errors in a filter OnActionExecuting based on which version of the form was active. The other approach I was thinking of would to break the model up into pieces using something like class FormModel { public Form1 Form1Model {get; set;} public Form2 FormModel {get; set;} } and then we would validate appropriately depending on

• Subversion: setting up a remote repository and running my site off it?

  Hi all. I'm new to SVN and have experimented with it locally on my Dreamhost test server (which has a Subversion "one-click-install" function). Having found my way around the functionality I'm definitely sold, but a little lost about using it to manage my work website (not hosted with Dreamhost, so not offering a one-click SVN installation). Am I correct in thinking that I can set up a repository on my website root (which contains all the files), and then when I develop new features and run a commit, this will update my site? Is this the proper workflow for this sort of thing? If so, is there a standard way to set this kind of thing up on my remote server? Thanks.

• GLKit Memory Leak copywithZone

  Running the instruments utility against the game I'm writing shows a bunch of memory leaks related to copy with Zone when I cycle through an array and draw some simple cube objects. Im not sure the best way to track this down as I'm new to OpenGL programming. My program is using ARC and is set to build for IOS 5. I am initializing GLKit to use OPenGl 2.0 and using the BafeEffect so I don't have to write my own shaders etc.. This shouldn't be rocket science. Im guessing that I must be not releasing something within the draw function. Below is the code to my draw function. Could you guys take a look and see if anything stands out as the problem? One other thing to note is that I'm using 15 different textures, the cubes can be 1 of 15 different ones. I have a property set on the cube class for the texture and I set it as I create the cube in there array. But I do load all 15 when my programs view did load starts.They are small .jps files that are less than 75k each and each cube uses the same texture all the way around so shouldn't be too big of an issue.   If I have an object graph like this: class Company { public Address MainAddress {...} } class Address { public string City { ... } } Company c = new Company(); c.MainAddress = new Address(); c.MainAddress.City = "Stockholm"; and databind to a control using: textBox1.DataBinding.Add( "Text", c, "MainAddress.City" ); Everything is fine, but If I bind to: Company c2 = new Company(); c2 using the same syntax it crashes since the MainAddress property is null. I wonder if there is a custom Binding class that can set up listeners for all the possible paths here and bind to the actual object dynamically when/if I sometime later in the application set the MainAddress property.

• RIA Services and multiple/dynamic "Include" strategies

  As an example, assume the following simple model: public class Order { public List<LineItem> LineItems { get; set; } public List<Fee> Fees { get; set; } } public class LineItem { } public class Fee { } With RIA Services, if I want to retrieve an Order and include all of it's line items in the same network call, I can statically place an [Include] attribute on the above LineItems collection. This works great for a single scenario, but what happens when I need multiple "include strategies"? For instance, one situation might call for including the Fees collection and NOT the LineItems collection. Is there any way with RIA Services to control what's included at runtime without redefining your model and/or creating dtos with the attributes statically placed for each use-case?
