• What Would Google Do?

  Last year I read Jeff Jarvis' book What Would Google Do? and found it very interesting. Jeff is a long-time journalist that's been studying technology, and more specifically the internet. He used his skills to reverse-engineer Google into a list of "Google rules," then goes on to describe a futuristic world driven by these rules. Its an interesting look at crowd-sourcing, openness, and collaboration across many industries, including retail (Google Shops). This year Jeff Jarvis will be a keynote speaker at CrossTalk, Oracle's user conference dedicated to the retail industry. This year's theme is... Retail Redefined: Redesign. Reinvigorate. Reimagine. I think that's pretty appropriate given the massive changes the industry has undergone during the last three years. The thing I really like about this conference is that we try to let the retailers do most of the talking. I'm very interested in hearing about the innovative projects they've got brewing, and where they think our industry is heading. I'll be speaking, but I'm not sure about what so let me know of any interesting topics.

For example: What long-term economic, technological and societal changes are rolling out? Which foundational dynamics will affect our companies' performance, productivity, competition, and innovative potential in the upcoming decades? How will digital infrastructure change our business landscape? What kind of capabilities will be key to compete in a market shaped by growing turbulence, unpredictability and volatility? An updated version of the GlassFish plugin is also pushed to the update center and can be downloaded by clicking on "Additional Server Adapters" and selecting GlassFish as shown below: Couple of much needed improvements in the plugin are: Configurable "Preserve Sessions across Re-deploys" by double-clicking on the server properties: This property could only be configured during server registeration in earlier versions. • Growing Into Enterprise Architecture

  I am writing this post as I am in an Enterprise Architecture class, specifically on the Oracle Enterprise Architecture Framework (OEAF).  I have been a long believer that SOA’s key strength is that it is the first IT approach that blends or unifies business and technology.  That is a common view and is certainly valid but is not completely true (or at least accurate).  As my personal view of EA is growing, I realize more than ever that doing EA is FAR MORE than creating a reference architecture, creating a physical architecture or picking a technology to standardize on.  Those are parts of the puzzle but not the whole puzzle by any stretch. I am now a firm believer that the various EA frameworks out there provide the rigor and structure required to allow the bridging of business strategy / vision to IT strategy / vision. The flow goes something like this: Business Strategy –> Business / Application / Information / Technology Architecture –> SOA Reference Architecture –> SOA Functional Architecture.  Governance is imbued throughout to help map, measure and verify the business-to-IT coherence. With those in place, then (and only then) can SOA fulfill it’s potential to be more that an integration strategy, more than a reuse strategy; but also a foundation for tying the results of IT to business vision. Fortunately, EA is a an ongoing process that it is never too late to get started with an understanding of frameworks such as TOGAF, FEA, or OEAF.  Also, EA is never ending in that it always needs to be apply, even once a full-blown Enterprise Architecture is established it needs to be constantly evolved.  For those who are getting deeper into EA as a discipline, there is plenty runway to grow as your company/customer begins to look more seriously at EA.   To make the most effective use of a portal and content management platform, personalization is a critical component of delivering the most value to end users. Regardless of what type of constituents you may be serving, content relevance is critical to support business goals like self-service, communication within a geographically distributed organization, lead generation and customer loyalty effectively. This especially holds true when serving external parties, as they generally have a lower threshold for digging through your site to locate a particular item of interest and are apt to leave or dial a helpdesk if their efforts cannot locate the relevant information. Optimal delivery of content can be achieved through a variety of methods, but it is generally a blend of security and filtering via meta data that can drive the most return with the least amount of upfront effort and ongoing upkeep. In a portal environment various platform components have their strong suits and by combining the capabilities of enterprise portal and content platforms much of the groundwork for personalization can be achieved in a configuration-based manner. In our discussion we will cover terminology and concepts, example scenarios and technical implementation strategies to help showcase how personalization of content can be achieved within a portal from a technical and strategic standpoint. We've been having some interesting conversations with customers about this release at conferences, advisory board meetings, and technical group meetings. However, we would like to solicit some examples and success stories from you, our broad customer base. Do you have some examples of how you are using PeopleTools 8.50 and Enterprise Portal 9.1 that you would be willing to share? We would like to see some screen shots and perhaps a short blurb describing how you are using the Tools and Portal features, as well as any benefits accrued. Do you have a compelling success story? • Publish Static Content to WebLogic

  Most people know WebLogic has a built in web server. Typically this is not an issue as you deploy java applications and WebLogic publishes to the web. But what if you just want to display a simple static HTML page. In WebLogic you can develop a simple web application to display static HTML content. In this example I used WLS 10.3.3. I want to display 2 files, an HTML file, and an xsd for reference. Create a directory of your choice, this is what I will call the document root. mkdir /u01/oracle/doc_root Copy the static files to this directory  In the document root directory created in step 1 create the directory WEB-INF mkdir WEB-INF In the WEB-INF directory create a file called web.xml with the following content <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE web-app PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN" "http://java.sun.com/j2ee/dtds/web-app_2_3.dtd"> <web-app> </web-app> Login to the WebLogic console to deploy application Click on Deployments Click on Lock & Edit Click Install and set the path to the directory created in step 1 Leave default "Install this deployment as an application" and click Next Select a Managed Server to deploy to and click Next Accept the defaults and click Finish  Deployment completes successfully, now click the Activate Changes You should now see the application started in the deployments You can now access your static content via the following URL http://localhost:7001/doc_root/helloworld.html

• HTML Markup in einem APEX Tree - ganz einfach per Plugin!

  Die APEX Tree Region kennt sicherlich jeder APEX-Entwickler. Und vielfach besteht der Bedarf, das Aussehen des APEX Tree mit Hilfe von HTML Markup zu beeinflussen. Leider ist es seit APEX 4.0 nicht mehr möglich, eigenes HTML-Markup in einen APEX-Tree aufzunehmen - aus Sicherheitsgründen (Schutz vor Cross-Site-Scripting) werden alle HTML Sonderzeichen maskiert. Wenn kein XSS-Risiko besteht (die vom Tree dargestellten Inhalte basieren nicht auf Benutzereingaben und werden komplett vom Entwickler bestimmt), kann dies mit wenigen Zeilen JavaScript und jQuery-Code erreicht werden. Damit es noch einfacher wird,  haben wir die Funktionalität für Sie in einem APEX-Plugin gekapselt.   A USA based company is assessing Demantra Trade Promotion Management (TPM) capability.  It appears that SOX is necessary in their case due to the nature of what TPM does and the necessity for auditability.  Do we have any detail on SOX compliance for Demantra? Answser ------- SOX compliance with regards to IT: 1.  Requires auditing of data changes done by who, what, when     a. Audit trail profiles can be set up for key financial series and view them in audit trail reports     b. One functionality we do not have which typically is asked for is user login history. We have only        active sessions, history is not available. 2.  Segregation of duties     a. With respect to TPM, you could have deduction and financial analyst for settlement be different        from promotion creator, promotion approver or sales team.     b. Budget Approver for funds can be different from funds consumer.     c. Promotion creator can be different than promotion approver     d. For a US customer you may have to write some custom scripts to capture promotion status change        and produce an external report as part of compliance. • Setting Up IRM Test Content

  A feature of the 11g IRM Server that sometimes gets overlooked is the ability to set up some test content that any IRM user can access to verify that their IRM Desktop can reach the server, authenticate successfully, and render protected content successfully. Such test content is useful for new users, and in troubleshooting scenarios. Here's how to set up some test content... In the management console, go to IRM - Administration - Test Content, as shown. The console will display a list of test content - initially an empty list. Use the Add option to specify the URL of a document or image, and define one or more labels for the test content in whichever languages your users favour. Note that you do not need to seal the image or document in order to use it as test content. Nor do you need to set up any rights for the test content. The IRM Server will handle the sealing and rights assignment automatically such that all authenticated users are authorised to view the test content. Repeat this process for as many different types of content as you would like to offer for test purposes - perhaps a Word document, a PDF document, and an image. To keep things simple the first time I did this, I used the URL of one of the images in the IRM Server's UI - so there was no problem with the IRM Server being able to reach that image. Whatever content you want to use, the IRM Server needs to be able to reach it at the URL you specify. Using Test Content Open a browser and browse to the URL that the IRM Desktop normally uses to access the IRM Server, for example: http://irm11g.oracle.com/irm_desktop If you are not sure, you can find this URL in the Servers tab of the IRM Options dialog. Go to the Test tab, and you will see your test content listed. By opening one of the items, you can verify that your IRM Desktop is healthy and that you can authenticate to the IRM Server.
