• Is there a way to tell JVM to optimize my code before processing?

  I have a method, which takes much time to execute first time. But after several invocations, it takes about 30 times less time. So, to make my application respond to user interaction faster, I "warm-up" this method (5 times) with some sample data on initialization of application. But this increases app start-up time. I read, that JVM's can optimize and compile my java code to native, thus speeding things up. I wanted to know - maybe there is some way to explicitly tell JVM that I want this method to be compiled on startup of application?

• Enabling full documentation for J2EE in eclipse

  I'm new to Eclipse and am using it currently to play with J2EE. When using Ctrl+Space for types/functions from the regular Java libraries I get a full description (i.e. general description of the type, what are the arguments of the method for, etc.). However I don't get the same for J2EE types. For example, when using Ctrl+Space on methods of the HttpSession class I get only names like "arg0" or "obj" and no description. Is there some kind of a package I can install to remedy this?

  Hi, I have defined a object model where one of the array elements is a string public static String[] columnNames6 = {"Total Shares", "Total Calls", "Call Strike", "Call Premium", "Call Expiry" }; public static Object[][] data6 = { { new Double(0), new Double(0), new Double(0), new Double(0),"dd/mm/yyyy"}, }; I then use the following code to get the date so that I can use the data method but having no joy - Can someone please tell me why it is throwing an exception after I do this String ExpiryDate = (String)GV.data6[0][4]; System.out.println("DATE STRING IS: " + ExpiryDate); Date EndOptionDate = new Date(ExpiryDate); // SOMETHING WRONG HERE even though it compiles okay //Get Todays's Date Date TodaysDate = new Date(); //Calculate Days Option Expiry long DaysDifference = EndOptionDate.getTime() - TodaysDate.getTime(); Would really appreciate some help as really stuck not sure how I should code the line in bold - new to java, so please excuses my lack of knowledge looked at tutorials can't seem to move forward.   Hi, I had an issue in building the resultset using java. Here it goes... I am storing a collection object which is organized as row wise taken from a resultset object and putting the collection object(which is stored as vector/array list) in cache and trying to retrieve the same collection object.   i do the below java print command for this double variable double test=58.15; When i do a System.out.println(test); and System.out.println(new Double(test).toString()); It prints as 58.15. When i do a System.out.println(new BigDecimal(test)) I get the below value 58.14999999999999857891452847979962825775146484375 I am able to understand "test" double variable value is internally stored as 58.1499999. But when i do the below two System.out.println i am getting the output as 58.15 and not 58.1499999. System.out.println(test); System.out.println(new Double(test).toString()); It prints the output as 58.15 for the above two. Is the above System.out.println statements are doing some rounding of the value 58.1499999 and printing it as 58.15?

• Eclipse 3.5 Missing New Web Application option after installing Google App Engine plugin

  Hey all, I just used Eclipse 3.5 to install the Google App Engine plug in. The plug in is showed as installed in the update manager. However, I am not seeing the option to "New Web Application Project" (http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/tools/eclipse.html). I also don't see anything Google related when I type Google into the search bar under Windows Preferences. There were no errors at the time of installation, and I was asked if I wanted to restart Eclipse, clicked yes, and it restarted accordingly. Am I missing something?

• JDBC character encoding

  Hi there, I have a Java Web application using GlassFish 3, JSF2.0 (facelets) and JPA (EclipseLink) on MySQL (URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/administer). The problem I'm facing is that if I'm saving entities to the database with the update() method, String data loses integrity; '?' is shown instead of some characters. The server, pages and database is/are configured to use UTF-8. After I post form data, the next page shows the data correctly. Furthermore it "seems" in debug that the String property of the current entity stores the correct value too. Dunno if NetBeans debug can be trusted; might be that it decodes correctly, however it's incorrect. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Daniel

• Prevent IE caching

  I am developing a Java EE web application using Struts. The problem is with Internet Explorer caching. If an user logs out he can access some pages because they are cached and no request is made. If I hit refresh it works fine. Also if an user goes to login page again it won't redirect him because that page is also cached. Two solutions come to my mind: Writing an Interceptor (servlet filter like) to add to response header no-cache etc. Or or put <meta> tags at each page. Which one should I do?

• Guice creates Swing components outside of UI thread problem?

  I'm working on Java Swing application with Google Guice as an IOC container. Things are working pretty well. There are some UI problems. When a standard L&F is replaced with Pushing pixels Substance L&F application is not running due to Guice's Swing components creation outside of UI thread. Is there a way to tell Guice to create Swing components in the UI thread? Maybe I should create custom providers which will return Swing components after SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(Runnable) creates them. I don't like the idea of running the whole application in UI thread, but maybe it's just a perfect solution.

• Recieving server broadcast on mobile in real time

  I have to write a simple mobile application that is able to recieve broadcast from a server, connected using GPRS, over a secure SSL connection. The amount of data mobile need to recieve is very small (about 100 character string for a single broadcast and maximum 10 broadcast per minute) I need to display it on screen and generate a alert sound (and vibrate the device). Client need not to send anything back to server. (ofcourse at the time of intialization the client app need to send some data for authorization) The target mobile plateform is symbion S60 and Blackberry. How can i do this? What tools, SDK and Third party framework (if needed) i should use? I am familier with java and network programming but not for mobile device.

  I have to create a pdf report using apache itext api and report should be zipped .For example there is a report to be generated for people staying in a location of a state. for each state there are many locations, for each location , details of eachh people under the location should be saved as pdf (for each people) finally all the pdf for a location should be zipped ,this way finally all zip files for all locations should be zipped and placed under the zip file for states . my question is how best we can develop code in java. i want a skeleton framework to do the above functionality . i thought of using recursion method.also let me know from experienced users of zip api, will there be any error during creation of many zip files.

I think it is because itr.next() is not considered as a string. How can I solve this problem? I tried to replace Set keys by Set<String> keys. It did not help.

• Simple but efficient way to store a series of small changes to an image?

  I have a series of images. Each one is typically (but not always) similar to the previous one, with 3 or 4 small rectangular regions updated. I need to record these changes using a minimum of disk space. The source images are not compressed, but I would like the deltas to be compressed. I need to be able to recreate the images exactly as input (so a lossy video codec is not appropriate.) I am thinking of something along the lines of: Composite the new image with a negative of the old image Save the composited image in any common format that can compress using RLE (probably PNG.) Recreate the second image by compositing the previous image with the delta. Although the images have an alpha channel, I can ignore it for the purposes of this function. Is there an easy-to-implement algorithm or free Java library with this capability?

• JAXB Locator - missing dependency?

  On my current project we generate JAXB beans from an XSD file. We need line number information on the beans (beyond XSD validation errors!) so I used the -Xlocator option specified here: http://java.sun.com/webservices/docs/1.6/jaxb/xjc.html However, I'm missing the Locator class. The jar file referenced to on that six-year old page can't be found anywhere, as I don't see a download for JWSDP on any site at all. Is XJC dead? Should I be using something else?

• What is resource-ref in web.xml used for?

  Hi everyone, I'm just wondering when/why you would define a resource-ref element in your web.xml file? I would have thought that it would be defined in your web/app server using JNDI and then look up the JNDI reference in your Java code? The resource-ref definition seems a bit redundant to me and I can't think of when it might be useful.   I am trying to send special characters like spanish chars from my page to a JSP page as a form parameter. When I try get the parameter which I sent, it shows that as "?" (Question mark). • JNI unsigned char to byte array

  I'm working with a C++ library that stores image byte data in an array of unsigned characters. My jni function returns a jByteArray (which then gets converted to a BufferedImage on the java side), but I'm not sure how to fill the jByteArray from the unsigned character array (if it is possible). Can anyone provide a snippet for this last part to basically do this: // size is the size of the unsigned char array const int size = 100; unsigned char* buf = new unsigned char[size]; // buf gets passed to another library here to be populated jbyteArray bArray = env->NewByteArray(size); // now how do I get the data from buf to bArray?   A trigger in an Oracle 10g generates upsert and delete messages for a subset of rows in a regular table. These messages consist out of two fields: A unique row id. A non-unique id. When consuming these message I want to impose an order on the deque process that respects the following constraints: Messages must be dequeued in insertion order. Messages belonging to the same id must be dequeued in such a fashion that no other dequeuing process should be able to dequeue a potential successor message (or messages) with this id. Since the messages are generated using a trigger I cannot use groups for this purpose. I am using the Oracle Java interface for AQ. Any pointers on how that could be achieved?

• Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

  I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it).
