• Strategy for Offline/Online data synchronization

  My requirement is I have server J2EE web application and client J2EE web application. Sometimes client can go offline. When client comes online he should be able to synchronize changes to and fro. Also I should be able to control which rows/tables need to be synchronized based on some filters/rules. Is there any existing Java frameworks for doing it? If I need to implement on my own, what are the different strategies that you can suggest? One solution in my mind is maintaining sql logs and executing same statements at other side during synchronization. Do you see any problems with this strategy?

• How do I tell eclipse to auto-generate or retain stubs when it starts and does a clean build?

  I'm working on a Java application that uses JavaSpace. We're developing this in Eclipse. There are a couple instances where we are inserting code into the JavaSpace to do some more advanced space notification logic. Doing this requires that we generate stubs for the classes used within the JavaSpace. We use an external script to generate these stubs. The problem is that whenever Eclipse restarts, it does a clean build of the whole application. When it does this, it deletes all the stubs and we have to regenerate them. I would like to find a way to either tell Eclipse not to remove the _stub.class and _skel.class files within the bin folder where the .class files are placed. Either that, or somehow teach Eclipse to generate the stub files whenever it does a rebuild (and I suppose whenever the source files from which the stubs are generated changes). How can I do one of these, so that we don't have to manually build the stubs every time we start up Eclipse?

Does anyone know of a clear way to remove jars from the classpath? Has anyone encountered this Roo problem before and solved it another way?

I have virtually tried everything: The icon is 16x16 which is the right size ....doesn't work I've trying PNG,GIF and JPG formats none of them work. • How to make Date locale-independent? (GMT timezone newbie question)

  I have a db, that stores dates in OleDateTime format, in GMT timezone. I've implemented a class, extending Date in java to represent that in classic date format. But my class is locale-dependent (I'm in GMT+2). Therefore, it converts the date in the db as date - 2 hours. How do I make it convert the date correctly? I want my class to be locale-independent, always using GMT timezone. • How to figure out optimal C / Gamma parameters in libsvm?

  I'm using libsvm for multi-class classification of datasets with a large number of features/attributes (around 5,800 per each item). I'd like to choose better parameters for C and Gamma than the defaults I am currently using. I've already tried running easy.py, but for the datasets I'm using, the estimated time is near forever (ran easy.py at 20, 50, 100, and 200 data samples and got a super-linear regression which projected my necessary runtime to take years). Is there a way to more quickly arrive at better C and Gamma values than the defaults? I'm using the Java libraries, if that makes any difference.

  Hi all I'm using JBPM 4.3 and trying hard to find a way to terminate one processInstance. First I simply used something like: executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); However I got exception thrown out. "exception while executing command org.jbpm.pvm.internal.cmd.EndProcessInstance java.lang.NullPointerException" Then I googled to find this post http://community.jboss.org/thread/146478, which didn't seem to give a resolution. I tried nevertheless to end all executions of the processInstance by calling ((ExecutionImpl) execution).end(); But the same exception was thrown again when I finally try to call executionService.endProcessInstance(processInstanceID, "active"); Did anyone have the same experience and solution?

  Hi everyone, I have a java application launched by a .cmd file. I want to set the classpath of the application through this batch, all the needed jars are into a lib folder. Here is what I tried : set _classpath=. for %%i in (%1/lib/*.*) do ( set _classpath=%_classpath%;%%i ) Surprisingly, it seems that it does not act as expected. Let's say there is 3 jar in the lib folder : pikachu.jar sonic.jar mario.jar Here is what happens : set _classpath=. set _classpath=.;pikachu.jar set _classpath=.;sonic.jar set _classpath=.;mario.jar Obviously, what I am looking to get is set _classpath=.;pikachu.jar;sonic.jar;mario.jar Any idea ?   I return empty collections vs. null whenever possible. I switch between two methods for doing so using java.util.Collections: return Collections.EMPTY_LIST; return Collections.emptyList(); where emptyList() is supposed to be type-safe. But I recently discovered: return Collections.<ComplexObject> emptyList(); return Collections.<ComplexObject> singletonList(new ComplexObject()); etc. I see this method in Eclipse Package Explorer: <clinit> () : void but I don't see how this is done in the source code (1.5). How is this magic tomfoolerie happening!!

Background image means I can later add Components on the JFrame or JPanel Although I coudn't find how to add background image to a JFrame, I found out how to add background image to a JPanel from here: How to set background image in Java? This solved my problem, but now since my JFrame is resizable I want to keep the image in center. The code I found uses this method public void paintComponent(Graphics g) { //Draw the previously loaded image to Component. g.drawImage(img, 0, 0, null); //Draw image } Can anyone say how to align the image to center of the JPanel. • Is lock returned by ReentrantReadWriteLock equivalent to it's read and write locks?

  Hello, I have been looking around for the answer to this, but no joy. In Java, is using the lock created by ReentrantReadWriteLock equivalent to getting the read and write locks as returned by readLock.lock() and writeLock.lock()? In other words, can I expect the read and write locks associated with the ReentrantReadWriteLock to be requested and held by synchronizing on the ReentrantReadWriteLock? My gut says "no" since any object can be used for synchronization. I wouldn't think that there would be special behavior for ReentrantReadWriteLock. However, special behavior is the corner case of which I may not be aware. Thanks, Todd

• Ant ignores attempt to override the LANG environment variable

  We need to test a java build with the languages set to different values. I can manually (i.e. via export LANG=en_DK.UTF-8 and export LANG=en_DK) test that the unit tests run with the ant build script behaves differently, but I need to set the environment variable from ant. I have tried setting it using these methods (with the shell $LANG set to en_DK.UTF-8): using -D on the command line: ant -DLANG=en_DK using a build.properties file with the line LANG=en_DK in it using the following statements in the build.xml file (sorry for the formatting, I can't get SO to display it otherwise): : <property environment="ANTENV"/> <property name="ANTENV.LANG" value="en_DK"/> Using any of the three possibilities, and when run with -debug, ant reports that: Override ignored for property "LANG" What can I do to set the LANG environment variable from within ant?

• Multiple complete HTTP requests stuck in TCP CLOSE_WAIT state

  I have a Java and Tomcat-based server application which initiates many outbound HTTP requests to other web sites. We use Jakarta's HTTP Core/Client libraries, very latest versions. The server locks up at some point since all its worker threads are stuck trying to close completed HTTP connections. Using 'lsof' reveals a bunch of sockets stuck in TCP CLOSE_WAIT state. This doesn't happen for all, or even most connections. In fact, I saw it before and resolved it by making sure to set the Connection: Close response header. So that makes me think it may be bad behavior of remote servers. It may have come up again since I moved the app to a totally new service provider -- different OS, network situation. But, I am still at a loss as to what I could do, if anything, to work around this. Some poking around on the internet didn't turn up anything I'm not already doing. Just thought I'd ask if anyone has seen and solved this?

  When reading this question I remembered there was something I have been researching for a while now and I though Stackoverflow could be of help. I have created a framework that handles applications as state machines. Currently all the state business logic and transactions are handled via Java code. I was looking for some UI implementation that would allow the user to draw the state machines and transactions and generate a file that can later on be consumed by my framework to "run" the workflow according to one or more defined state machines. Ideally I would like to use an open standard like SCXML. The goal as the UI would be to have something like this plugin IBM have for Rational Software Architect: Do you know any editor, plugin or library that would have something similar or at least serve as a good starting point?

• Seam cache provider with ehcache null

  Hi every one, I'm trying to configure seam/ehcache following the tutorial from jboss page: http://docs.jboss.org/seam/2.1.2/reference/en-US/html/cache.html I put the ehcache.1.2.3.jar in project.ear/lib and injected CacheProvider as especified, but the CacheProvider always return null. The documentation doesn't show any aditional configuration for ehcache, just for jboss cache. • Estimate serialization size of objects?

  In my thesis, I woud like to enhance messaging in a cluster. It's important to log runtime information about how big a message is (should I prefer processing local or remote). I could just find frameoworks about estimating the object memory size based on java instrumentation. I've tested classmexer, which didn't come close to the serialization size and sourceforge SizeOf. In a small testcase, SizeOf was around 10% wrong and 10x faster than serialization. (Still transient breaks the estimation completely and since e.g. ArrayList is transient but is serialized as an Array, it's not easy to patch SizeOf. But I could live with that) On the other hand, 10x faster with 10% error doesn't seem very good. Any ideas how I could do better?

  I am developing an Twitter4J web application in Google App Engine/Java. I need to show two lists. One is Twitter friends and other is followers. With photo and screen name. It is working fine for people who have 20-30 followers and friends. But it gave me DeadlineExceededException when I try a user who has 150+ followers and friends. GAE throws this exception if web request take time more than 30 seconds. So what techniques I can adopt to avoid this exception. Should I generate two AJAX calls for each of my list. After page loads. So that every call will have its own 30 secs limit? Or what else you think? I am gone make it. Please help.

• Maven eclipse does not add a dependency

  I have the following snippet in my pom.xml <dependency> <groupId>aspectj</groupId> <artifactId>aspectjrt</artifactId> <version>1.5.3</version> </dependency> and in one of my Java files I refer a class org.aspectj.lang.ProceedingJoinPoint. When I do a "mvn clean install" it compiles and builds fine but when I do an eclipse:eclipse, and import the project in eclipse it gives me an error The import org.aspectj cannot be resolved. I checked the .classpath file that was generated and it does not have an entry to this file. I tried a "mvn dependency:tree" and it lists this fine. Can someone tell me what is going wrong here?

  I saw some code on an unrelated question but it got me curious as I never saw such construct with Java Generics. What would be the use of creating a generic class that can take as type argument itself or descendants of itself. Here is example : abstract class A<E extends A> { abstract void foo(E x); } the first thing that came to mind would be a list that takes a list as parameter. Using this code feels strange, how do you declare a variable of type A ? Recursive declaration !? Does this even work ? If so did any of you see that in code ? How was it used ?

• Lazy loading in Hibernate

  My Java Web application uses Hibernate to perform ORM. In some of my objects, I use lazy loading to avoid getting data until I absolutely need it. The problem is that I load the initial object in a session, and then that session is destroyed. When I later attempt to resolve the lazy-loaded collections in my object I get the following error: org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException: failed to lazily initialize a collection of role: common.model.impl.User.groups, no session or session was closed I tried associating a new session with the collection and then resolving, but this gives the same results. Does anyone know how I can resolve the lazy collections once the original session is gone? Thanks... --Steve

Is there any way to force transformer to use UTF-8 instead of entities?
