  • Are you reporting Visual Studio 2012 issues to Microsoft correctly?

    Issues you may run into while using Visual Studio need to be reported to the Microsoft Product Team via the Microsoft connect site. The Microsoft team then tries to reproduce the issue using the details provided by you. If the information you provide isn’t sufficient to reproduce the issue the team tries to contact you for specifics, this not only increases the cycle time to resolution but the lack of communication also results in issues not being resolved. So, when I report an issue one part of me tells me to include as much detail about the issue as I can clubbing screen shots, repo steps, system information, visual studio version information,… the other half tells me this is so time consuming, leave it for now and come back to fill all these details later. Reporting a bug but not including the supporting information is an invitation to excuses like …     Microsoft has absolutely changed this experience for VS 2012. The Microsoft Visual Studio Feedback tool is designed to simplify the process of providing feedback and reporting issues to Microsoft that you may encounter while using Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. Note – The Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback client currently only works for VS 2012 and not any other versions of Visual Studio. Setting up the Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback client Open Visual Studio, from the Tools menu select Extension and Updates. In the Extension and Updates window, click Online from the left pane and search using the text ‘feedback’, download and Install Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Feedback Tool by following the instructions from the wizard. Filling out the feedback details You will notice that VsInfo.xml and DxDiagOutput.txt are automatically attached as you enter this screen (more on that later).  Feedback Type Choose the feedback type from (Performance, Hang, Crash, Other) Note – The record button will only be enabled once you have enabled once you have chosen the feedback type, Bug-repro recording is not available for Windows Server 2008.     Effective Title and Description Enter a title that helps us differentiate the bug when it appears in a list, so that we can group it with any related bugs, assign it to a developer more effectively, and resolve it more quickly. Example: Imagine that you are submitting a bug because you tried to install Service Pack 1 and got a message that Visual Studio is not installed even though it is. Helpful:  Installed Visual Studio version not detected during Service Pack 1 setup. Not helpful:  Service Pack 1 problem. Tip: Write the problem description first, and then distil it to create a title. Example Description: Helpful: When I run Service Pack 1 Setup, I get the message "No Visual Studio version is detected" even though I have Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and Visual C++ 2010 Express installed on my machine. Even though I uninstalled both editions, and then first reinstalled Ultimate and then Express, I still get the message. Record: Becoming a first class citizen Often a repro report is invaluable to describe and decipher the issue. Please use this feature to send actionable feedback. The record repro feature works differently depending on the feedback type you selected. Please find below details for each recording option. You can start recording simply by selecting a feedback type, and clicking on the “Record” button. When "Performance" is the bug type: When the Microsoft Visual Studio trace recorder starts, perform the actions that show the performance problem you want to report and then click on the "Stop Recording" button as soon as you experience the performance problem. Because the tool optimizes trace collection, you can run it for as long as it takes to show the problem, up to two hours. Note that, you need to stop recording as soon as the performance issue occurs, because the tool captures only the last couple minutes of your actions to optimize the trace collection. After you stop the recording, the tool takes up to two minutes to assemble the data and attach an ETLTrace.zip file to your bug report. The data includes information about Windows events and the Visual Studio code path. Note that, running the Microsoft Visual Studio trace recorder requires elevated user privilege. When "Crash" is the bug type: When the dialog box appears, select the running Visual Studio instance for which you want to show the steps that cause a crash. When the crash occurs, click on the "Stop Record" button. After you do this, two files are attached to your bug report - an AutomaticCrashDump.zip file that contains information about the crash and a ReproSteps.zip file that shows the repro steps. Repro steps are captured by Windows Problem Steps Recorder. Note that, you can pause the recording, and resume later, or for a specific step, you can add additional comments. When "Hang" is the bug type: The process for recording the steps that cause a hang resembles the one for crashes. The difference is, you can even collect a dump file after the VS hangs; start the VSFT either from the system tray or by starting a new instance of VS, select "Hang" as feedback type and click on the "Record" button. You will be prompted which VS to collect dump about, select the VS instance that hanged. VSFT collects a dump file regarding the hang, called MiniDump.zip, and attaches to your bug report. When "Other" is the bug type: When the problem step recorder starts, perform the actions that show the issue you want to report and then choose the "Stop” button. You can pause the recording, and resume later, or for a specific step, you can add additional comments. Once you’re done, ReproSteps.zip is added to your bug report. Pre-attached files It is essential for Microsoft to know what version of the the product are you currently using and what is the current configuration of your system. Note – The total size of all attachments in a bug report cannot exceed 2 GB, and every uncompressed attachment must be smaller than 512 MB. We recommend that you assemble all of your attachments, compress them together into a .zip file, and then attach the .zip file. Taking a screenshot Associate a screen shot by clicking the Take screenshot button, choose either the entire desktop, the specific monitor (useful if you are working in a multi monitor configuration) or the specific window in question.   • JPA 2.1 Schema Generation (TOTD #187)

    This blog explained some of the key features of JPA 2.1 earlier. Since then Schema Generation has been added to JPA 2.1. This Tip Of The Day (TOTD) will provide more details about this new feature in JPA 2.1. Schema Generation refers to generation of database artifacts like tables, indexes, and constraints in a database schema. It may or may not involve generation of a proper database schema depending upon the credentials and authorization of the user. This helps in prototyping of your application where the required artifacts are generated either prior to application deployment or as part of EntityManagerFactory creation. This is also useful in environments that require provisioning database on demand, e.g. in a cloud. This feature will allow your JPA domain object model to be directly generated in a database. The generated schema may need to be tuned for actual production environment. This usecase is supported by allowing the schema generation to occur into DDL scripts which can then be further tuned by a DBA. The following set of properties in persistence.xml or specified during EntityManagerFactory creation controls the behaviour of schema generation. Property Name Purpose Values javax.persistence.schema-generation-action Controls action to be taken by persistence provider "none", "create", "drop-and-create", "drop" javax.persistence.schema-generation-target Controls whehter schema to be created in database, whether DDL scripts are to be created, or both "database", "scripts", "database-and-scripts" javax.persistence.ddl-create-script-target, javax.persistence.ddl-drop-script-target Controls target locations for writing of scripts. For example, the table name is defaulted from entity name and entity name (which can be specified explicitly as well) is defaulted from the class name. However annotations may be used to override or customize the values. The following entity class: @Entity public class Employee {    @Id private int id;    private String name;     . . .     @ManyToOne     private Department dept; } is generated in the database with the following attributes: Maps to EMPLOYEE table in default schema "id" field is mapped to ID column as primary key "name" is mapped to NAME column with a default VARCHAR(255). The length of this field can be easily tuned using @Column. @ManyToOne is mapped to DEPT_ID foreign key column. Can be customized using JOIN_COLUMN. In addition to these properties, couple of new annotations are added to JPA 2.1: @Index - An index for the primary key is generated by default in a database. This new annotation will allow to define additional indexes, over a single or multiple columns, for a better performance. This is specified as part of @Table, @SecondaryTable, @CollectionTable, @JoinTable, and @TableGenerator. For example: @Table(indexes = {@Index(columnList="NAME"), @Index(columnList="DEPT_ID DESC")})@Entity public class Employee {    . . .} The generated table will have a default index on the primary key. In addition, two new indexes are defined on the NAME column (default ascending) and the foreign key that maps to the department in descending order. @ForeignKey - It is used to define foreign key constraint or to otherwise override or disable the persistence provider's default foreign key definition. Can be specified as part of JoinColumn(s), MapKeyJoinColumn(s), PrimaryKeyJoinColumn(s). For example: @Entity public class Employee {    @Id private int id;    private String name;    @ManyToOne    @JoinColumn(foreignKey=@ForeignKey(foreignKeyDefinition="FOREIGN KEY (MANAGER_ID) REFERENCES MANAGER"))    private Manager manager;     . . . } In this entity, the employee's manager is mapped by MANAGER_ID column in the MANAGER table. These features will be available in GlassFish 4 promoted builds in the near future. JPA 2.1 will be delivered as part of Java EE 7.   • How do i route TCP connections via TOR? [on hold]

    I was reading about torchat which is essentially an anonymous chat program. It sounded cool so i wanted to experiment with making my own. First i wrote a test to grab a webpage using Http. Sicne .NET doesnt support SOCKS4A/SOCKS5 i used privoxy and my app worked. Then i switch to a TCP echo test and privoxy doesnt support TCP so i searched and installed 6+ proxy apps (freecap, socat, freeproxy, delegate are the ones i can remember from the top of my head, i also played with putty bc i know it supports tunnels and SOCK5) but i couldnt successfully get any of them to work let alone get it running with my http test that privoxy easily and painlessly did. What may i use to get TCP connections going through TOR? I spent more then 2 hours without success. I don't know if i am looking for a relay, tunnel, forwarder, proxy or a proxychain which all came up in my search. I use the config below for .NET. I need TCP working but i am first testing with http since i know i had it working using privoxy.   • How to decrypt an encrypted Apple iTunes iPhone backup?

    I've been asked by a number of unfortunate iPhone users to help them restore data from their iTunes backups. This is easy when they are unencrypted, but not when they are encrypted, whether or not the password is known. As such, I'm trying to figure out the encryption scheme used on mddata and mdinfo files when encrypted. I have no problems reading these files otherwise, and have built some robust C# libraries for doing so. (If you're able to help, I don't care which language you use. It's the principle I'm after here!) The Apple "iPhone OS Enterprise Deployment Guide" states that "Device backups can be stored in encrypted format by selecting the Encrypt iPhone Backup option in the device summary pane of iTunes. Files are encrypted using AES128 with a 256-bit key. The key is stored securely in the iPhone keychain." That's a pretty good clue, and there's some good info here on Stackoverflow on iPhone AES/Rijndael interoperability suggesting a keysize of 128 and CBC mode may be used. Aside from any other obfuscation, a key and initialisation vector (IV)/salt are required. One might assume that the key is a manipulation of the "backup password" that users are prompted to enter by iTunes and passed to "AppleMobileBackup.exe", padded in a fashion dictated by CBC. However, given the reference to the iPhone keychain, I wonder whether the "backup password" might not be used as a password on an X509 certificate or symmetric private key, and that the certificate or private key itself might be used as the key. (AES and the iTunes encrypt/decrypt process is symmetric.) The IV is another matter, and it could be a few things. Perhaps it's one of the keys hard-coded into iTunes, or into the devices themselves. Although Apple's comment above suggests the key is present on the device's keychain, I think this isn't that important. One can restore an encrypted backup to a different device, which suggests all information relevant to the decryption is present in the backup and iTunes configuration, and that anything solely on the device is irrelevant and replacable in this context. So where might be the key be? I've listed paths below from a Windows machine but it's much of a muchness whichever OS we use. The "\appdata\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\itunesprefs.xml" contains a PList with a "Keychain" dict entry in it. The "\programdata\apple\Lockdown\09037027da8f4bdefdea97d706703ca034c88bab.plist" contains a PList with "DeviceCertificate", "HostCertificate", and "RootCertificate", all of which appear to be valid X509 certs. The same file also appears to contain asymmetric keys "RootPrivateKey" and "HostPrivateKey" (my reading suggests these might be PKCS #7-enveloped). Also, within each backup there are "AuthSignature" and "AuthData" values in the Manifest.plist file, although these appear to be rotated as each file gets incrementally backed up, suggested they're not that useful as a key, unless something really quite involved is being done. There's a lot of misleading stuff out there suggesting getting data from encrypted backups is easy. It's not, and to my knowledge it hasn't been done. Bypassing or disabling the backup encryption is another matter entirely, and is not what I'm looking to do. This isn't about hacking apart the iPhone or anything like that. All I'm after here is a means to extract data (photos, contacts, etc.) from encrypted iTunes backups as I can unencrypted ones. I've tried all sorts of permutations with the information I've put down above but got nowhere. I'd appreciate any thoughts or techniques I might have missed.

  • Uncompiled WCF on IIS7: The type could not be found

    Hello, I've been trying to follow this tutorial for deploying a WCF sample to IIS . I can't get it to work. This is a hosted site, but I do have IIS Manager access to the server. However, in step 2 of the tutorial, I can't "create a new IIS application that is physically located in this application directory". I can't seem to find a menu item, context menu item, or what not to create a new application. I've been right-clicking everywhere like crazy and still can't figure out how to create a new app. I suppose that's probably the root issue, but I tried a few other things (described below) just in case that actually is not the issue. This is "deployed" at http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalcService/Service.svc . The error says: The type 'Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService', provided as the Service attribute value in the ServiceHost directive, or provided in the configuration element system.serviceModel/serviceHostingEnvironment/serviceActivations could not be found. I also tried to create a virtual dir (IISHostedCalc) in dotnetpanel that points to IISHostedCalcService . When I navigate to http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalc/Service.svc , then there is a different error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection.   • How to Edit or Add a New Row in jqGrid

    My jqGrid that does a great job of pulling data from my database, but I'm having trouble understanding how the Add New Row functionality works. Right now, I'm able to edit inline data, but I'm not able to create a new row using the Modal Box. I'm missing that extra logic that says, "If this is a new row, post this to the server side URL" instead of modifying existing data. (Right now, hitting Submit only clears the form and reloads the grid data.) The documentation states that Add New Row is: jQuery("#editgrid").jqGrid('editGridRow',"new",{height:280,reloadAfterSubmit:false}); but I'm not sure how to use that correctly. I've spent alot of time studying the Demos, but they seem to all use an external button to fire the new row command, rather than using the Modal Form, which I want to do.     Whenever I use a RatingBar view in my layout, I suddenly get all kinds of compile errors. I'm using Android 2.0, but I've also tried 2.0.1, and 2.1, without joy. I also get a message: Shader 'android.graphics.BitmapShader' is not supported in Layout Editor, and an odd warning which may or maynot be related: warning: Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. I've tried using the RatingBar both within a tablelayout and outside it, but it behaves the same way. This is very puzzling and frustrating. Please help if you can.   • How to intercept raw soap request/response (data) from WCF client

    This question seems to be pretty close to what I am looking for - I was able to setup tracing and I am looking at the log entries for my calls to the service. However I need to see the raw soap request with the data I am sending to the service and I see no way of doing that from the SvcTraceViewer (only log entries are shown but no data sent to the service) - am I just missing configuration?   • Small performance test on a web service

    Hi, I'm trying to develop a small application that test how many requests per second can my service support but I think I'm doing something wrong. The service is in an early development stage, but I'd like to have this test handy in order to check in time to time I'm not doing something that decrease the performance. The problem is that I cannot get the web server or the database server go to the 100% of CPU. I'm using three different computers, in one is the web server (WinSrv Standard 2008 x64 IIS7), in other the database (Win 2K - SQL Server 2005) and the last is my computer (Win7 x64 ultimate), where I'll run the test. The computers are connected through a 100 ethernet switch. The request POST is 9 bytes and the response will be 842 bytes. Let's say I get a X requests per second, if I run the console application two times at the same moment, I get X/2 request per second in each one... but still the web server is on 30% of CPU, the database server on 25%... I've tried to remove the thread.sleep in the loop, but it doesn't make a big difference. I'd like to put the machines to the maximun, to check how may requests per second they can provide. I guessed that I could do it in this way... but apparently I'm missing something here... What is the problem? Kind regards.

  • WCF app Deployed on Win7 Machine and get connection refused error

    I have created a Sync Framework application based on the following sample from microsoft and deployed it to a new Windows 7 machine for testing. The app runs ok but when I attempt to communicate I get the following error: Could not connect to http://localhost:8000/RelationalSyncContract/SqlSyncService/. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8000. I am wondering if there is something I am missing. This is my first experience using WCF and followed microsoft sample code. I have disabled the firewall and opened port 8000 for both TCP and UDP. Not sure what to look at next. Then I want to do the same thing in LINQ, and it throws the following error: NHibernate.QueryException: could not resolve property: Url.Length of: DC_Control I've searched alot for this "could not resolve property" error, but I can't quite figure out, what this means. Is this because the LINQ implementation is not complete? If so it's a bit disappointing coming from Linq2Sql where this would just work. I also tried it setting up the mapping with a hbm.xml instead of using FluentNHibernate but it produced teh same error.

Update - Fixed Found my problem. I had included my classes directory in my path using a fileset as opposed to a pathelement this was causing .class files to be opened as ZipFiles which of course threw an exception.

    I'm working on a web application that uses ASP.NET 3.5 and C#. Structurally, I have a master page with a menu control on it. The control serves as my navigation, and it gets its items from a SiteMapDataSource control and a corresponding Web.sitemap file. The problem is that some styles do not render properly when you specify the CssClass property. More specifically, the selected and hover styles don't respond to css styles. If I specify the styles in the asp.net xml like so: <asp:Menu ID="navMenu" Orientation="Horizontal" runat="server"> <StaticSelectedStyle BackColor="Green" Font-Underline="True" Font-Bold="True" /> <StaticHoverStyle BackColor="Gray" /> </asp:Menu> It appears to work properly in Firefox, but the style is never embedded in the html in Internet Explorer. Odd. Does anybody have any insight into what is causing this problem and how to neatly work around it? I'm aware I might be able to programmically determine the current page and select the corresponding menu item manually so it receives the proper style class, but before I resort to hacking C# and Javascript together to fix this functionality, I'm open to ideas.   • ELMAH - Filtering 404 Errors

    I am attempting to configure ELMAH to filter 404 errors and I am running into difficulties with the XML-provided filter rules in my Web.config file. I followed the tutorial here and here and added an <is-type binding="BaseException" type="System.IO.FileNotFoundException" /> declaration under my <test><or>... declaration, but that completely failed. When I tested it locally I stuck a breakpoint in protected void ErrorLog_Filtering() {} of the Global.asax found that the System.Web.HttpException that gets fired by ASP.NET for a 404 doesn't have a base type of System.IO.FileNotFound, but rather it is simply a System.Web.HttpException. Next I decided to try a <regex binding="BaseException.Message" pattern="The file '/[^']+' does not exist" /> in the hopes that any exception matching the pattern "The file '/foo.ext' does not exist" would get filtered, but that too having no effect. As a last resort I tried <is-type binding="BaseException" type="System.Exception" />, and even that is entirely disregarded. I'm inclined to think there's a configuration error with ELMAH, but I fail to see any. Am I missing something blatantly obvious?     I am having an impossible time getting asp.net 4.0 to work in any fashion at all. In fact, I completely wiped my server, reinstalled with Server 2008 R2 Standard (running on a VMWare ESXi box, not that it should matter), and cannot even get a test .aspx page to work. Here is exactly what I did: Installed 2008 R2 Standard Activated windows and enabled Remote Desktop Installed the Web Server Role with the necessary role services(common http, asp.net, logging, tracing, management service and FTP) Enabled the management service Installed .Net Framework 4.0 via web executable Added FTP publishing to the default web site Switched default web site application pool to asp.net 4.0 (integrated) Added a 'test.aspx' file to the inetpub\wwwroot folder (contents below) Opened a browser to http://localhost/test.aspx and received a 500.0 error (also below) What am I missing? I haven't touched IIS in a while (3+ years), so it could be something stupid/trvial. Please point it out, call me a noob; my ego can take it.   • How to make sliding button sidebar in Flex

    Hi, I'm fairly new to Flex. I want to make a button (icon) on the far right in the middle of the page that display a sliding side bar with multiple buttons in it when you hover over it. I want when the user hover out of the button bar it slides back again. Conceptually I got the basics of that to work. The issue I'm having is that when the user moves the mouse between the buttons in the sidebar it kicks in changing state and side bar slides back again. I tried using different types of containers and I got the same results. Any Advice?
