• Ubuntu cannot access internet, LAN is fine

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server that is directly connected to our Comcast Business Gateway modem and I have configured it with 1 of our 5 allotted Static IPs. My other machines on our LAN can connect to this server (via ssh, web, ping, etc.) but I cannot access this server from outside our network, and this machine cannot get out to the internet either (ping google.com fails with unknown host). Here is my /etc/networking/interfaces file: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 173.162.54.19 netmask 255.255.255.248 broadcast 173.162.54.23 gateway 173.162.54.22 and my /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 68.87.77.130 nameserver 68.87.72.130 output from sudo route -n: Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 173.162.54.16 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.248 U 0 0 0 eth0 0.0.0.0 173.162.54.22 0.0.0.0 UG 100 0 0 eth0 I have a Windows 2008 machine with an almost identical Static IP, static DNS setup and it works correctly, can access it within the LAN and also from public internet, the Windows machine and the Ubuntu machine are both directly connected to the Comcast Business Gateway. I have tried rebooting Ubuntu, rebooting my Comcast modem, but nothing seems to make it work. I'm an Ubuntu noob, is there some other config I need to apply to make this work?   Captured on the nameserver: 21:54:35.391126 IP resolver.7538 > server.domain: 57385% [1au] A? www.domain.de. (42) What das the percent sign in 57385% mean? As far as I can see 57385 is the clients sequence number, a plus would mean RD bit set. Second question: what does the ARCOUNT do in the query? As I understand the tcpdump man page the [1au] means tcpdump treats this as a protocol anomalie - as would I. I see this in a lot of queries.

• Dreamweaver not connecting RDC

  I am trying to use Dreamweaver to Remote Desktop Connect into a computer where a website is hosted. Normal traffic to this server is routed to another domain, but when accessed by IP (it is my understanding) the traffic never hits any sort of nameserver request, and so stays there. This server is set up so that the only way I can access it is RDC. I can connect using an RDC program, but when I attempt to use Dreamweaver, I get a vague error. The desired action could not be completed because an unexpected client/server communication error occurred. I have Web URL as http://my.ip.number/directory And in the settings panel, I have Host name: my.ip.number Port: 3388 Host directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\directory/directory Username: user Password: ••••••• What could be preventing Dreamweaver form connecting? • Is a Hostname A Entry necessary?

  When I log into WHM, I get this message: The server was unable to lookup an an A entry for its hostname (server226.taxi.com). This is generally because the entry was never added. However this could also be the result of your nameserver(s) being down. If you would like to attempt to automatically add the entry, click here. If I click "here" it does nothing and I still get the message. I'm not hosting websites for other people, just internal projects on our server. Does not having an A Hostname Record affect SEO or anything like that or is this just a convenience when setting up nameservers or something like that?

• How to configure DNS BIND to work locally on one computer?

  I want to do some changes to the BIND source code. In order to test those changes I want to be able to post queries to my local BIND server and for it to use only the local zone files. I know how to make the zone files and somewhat the named.conf file but what should i put in /etc/resolv.conf? In resolv.conf currently there is the line nameserver 192.168.0.1 witch i guess is my router IP address and the queries go through the router to my ISP. I want those queries to go to the local BIND server and to look for answers in the zone files i provided. Is there a way for this using resolf.conf file or should i do something else?

• BIND9 DNS Records not Propagating

  Kind of new to managing DNS via BIND. We have a setup with a master server and a slave server. I've updated the zone file on the primary name server for our domain but the changes aren't propagating over to the secondary server. The funny thing is that I'm making a change in the zone file for a different domain on the server and those changes ARE being propagated to the secondary server. Anyway I can force the change to be made? Also, there was a third nameserver that used to be operational but has been offline for a few months now. I removed it from the zone file for the two domains that have it listed as a name server and it still (over 24 hours later) shows up from time to time when I run a record check. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Nate

(not hosting, only the domain) So far, I can only see the different pricing and features of the DNS manager but have no idea what I have to pay attention in addition to this. How to know about the quality of the provider's nameserver and could there be differences in speed concerns. Background: The hosting itself incl. webspace, server etc. is separate from the domain and I am not going to book the domain with the same hoster as the webspace/server hoster.

  I'm running a local dns server on port 5300 to develop a software. I need my machine to use that dns but I wasn't able to tell /etc/resolv.conf to check on a different port. I searched a bit on google and I didn't find a solution. I set 127.0.0.1 as nameserver on /etc/resolv.conf. Could you please tell me how can I redirect outbound traffic on port 53 to another port?   I'm trying to get a Curl Response from an outside server, however I noticed I cant neither PING the server in question nor connect to it. • precise dns problems after upgrading from lucid

  I am having DNS problems since upgrading to Precise from Lucid yesterday. DNS sometimes works but is very slow. These problems are just like others are having but I'm wondering if someone can help as I have slightly different specifics. I have read this "I really don’t want a local resolver, how can I turn it off? To turn off dnsmasq in Network Manager, you need to edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and comment the “dns=dnsmasq” line (put a # in front of it) then do a “sudo restart network-manager”." I do not have this line to comment. Checking in Synaptic Package Manager reveals that dnsmasq isn't install (dnsmasq-base is). Editing / creating connections using network manager GUI (and specifying DNS servers) doesn't help; ubuntu is not respecting user GUI set DNS servers. Should these GUI tools not work? "I use static IP configuration, where should I put my DNS configuration? The DNS configuration for a static interface should go as “dns-nameservers”, “dns-search” and “dns-domain” entries added to the interface in /etc/network/interfaces" Are any examples of this available? My /etc/network/interfaces is extremely sparse. For now I have edited /etc/resolv.conf replacing nameserver 127.0.0.1 with that of my DNS server (my broadband router), but I don't know how long this fix will last before the file is overwritten by this new system (dnsmasq?).

• Why does my name resolution hit the DNS even with a hosts file entry?

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Desktop. Being a web developer, naturally I created a "me.com" in my /etc/hosts file. Unfortunately, my name resolution is going out to the DNS before first checking my local hosts entry and I can't figure out why. The end result is that if my /etc/resolv.conf contains "nameserver 127.0.0.1" in there first, then I get a response back in my web browser from me.com (local) within less than a second. But if I don't have that entry, then my response takes sometimes as much as 5 seconds if my ISP is a little slow. The problem was so troublesome that I actually had to file a question here (and someone resolved it) for how to automatically insert that entry into /etc/resolv.conf. But one of the users (@shellaholic) here highly recommended (and commented back and forth with me about it) that I should file this question. Do you know why my workstation's name resolution has to hit the DNS server first before hitting my /etc/hosts file entry? For now, I'm using the resolv.conf trick (see link above).

• Is this an apt-get issue or network issue?

  I just installed my first Ubuntu server (12.04) instance and immediately am noticing a few things: Running apt-get install or update fails (see below) Running ifconfig produces peculiar IP addresses starting with 10.x.x.x and my router does not see the server at all in its "Attached Devices" page (its a consumer grade Netgear) When I run apt-get I get 50+ of the following errors: Failed to fetch <some-http-url. Temporary failure resolving <blah.ubuntu.com I read up on this error for 12.04, and found some similar posts on this forum and on serverfault that recommended going into /etc/resolv.conf and adding an entry: nameserver 8.8.8.8 To my surprise, I found that /etc/resolve.conf was a symlink pointing to somewhere else and I had to delete it first, then create a new one with the entry indicated above. I restarted the server and tried running apt-get again: same results. How do I start diagnosing the problem (I'm a relatively new Linux/Ubuntu user)? Additional details that may help: This is actually a virtual machine running as a VirtualBox guest OS The physical host that is running this VM is my laptop which has a wireless connection; I'm wondering if (somehow) the laptop is getting the network wirelessly, but perhaps either the VBox VM and/or the Ubuntu server OS isn't configured for wireless and so nothing is "getting through"? Thanks in advance for any pointers! • Suddely internet is not accessible

  I am going crazy here. One day everything was working fine. I turned pc off and went to sleep. Next day turn pc on and cannot access internet (from any browser). The situation is: I cannot open any webpage from browser (tried Firefox and Epiphany) and cannot receive emails in thunderbird. BUT if I run firefox from console as sudo, I can use it as usual. I can access Skype and pretty much any other network stuff (like installing software with apt-get etc.), also if I use Astrill VPN software I can access webpages even running without sudo. I haven't install any software or anything like that for several days = I have not a clue what could cause this. Just by the way, other Win PC in our home has no issue. Here is what I have tried to fix this: I have tried to restart my pc, router, modem - multiple times I have tried to change permissions to my firefox profile I have tried to completely re-install firefox and start with blank profile, thus no addons I have tried to change /etc/resolv.conf to an IP of my router (it was 127.0.1.1) I have tried to change my hostname (from tomino-NB to tominoNB) I think I might try even more stuff. None of it works. Can someone please try to help me. Thank you UPDATE 1: I have tried this: Removing resolv.conf - Didn't help Also "ping" and "dig" commands cannot resolve host UPDATE 2: I have tried to edit nameservers in resolv.conf but still no effect. I can ping router as well as I can ping outside IP. So definitely just some DNS issue. Is it possible that something is rewriting path to resolv.conf and using different file? UPDATE 3: I have just restarted PC and everything works now... resolv.conf went back to nameserver 127.0.1.1 . I have no clue what happened that it works again...

• Domain transfer and New Hosting Management

  I wanted to migrate from my older registrar to GoDaddy. Main reason because current registrar/hosting provider doesn't support .NET. My old registrar gave me control over the domain and hosting account. So, basically I have everything I would need. ( I know theory only ) I applied for Transfer of domain, bought a hosting package from GoDaddy and uploaded new web site. So, I am waiting for domain transfer and it tells me that I have to wait for 5-7 days for approval. Okay. But today, my old registrar told/taunted me that I really didn't need to apply for transfer. What could possibly I have done differently? My domain expires on this 15th. Now I don't know much about how all of this really works, but I am guessing he meant, "you should have waited for 15 days and let it expire after which you should buy the domain as it is expired". Is it really so(I doubt) or there are some other ways I could have got same result but without transferring domain? (like, changing DNS entries) I have read like all of the documentation available on namecheap/GoDaddy/Whois about domain transfers. But maybe because I am new to this it is all confusing to me. I would also like to know what to do with DNS settings after transfer succeeds. I want to kill the old website. So, what nameserver settings I need to change, new one or old one or both? I have old host+old domain registrar + old working site on one hand, on the other hand, new site + pending domain transfer + new DNS settings.

• Why is Ubuntu offline (except torrents) while Windows is online?

  I am using a static wired connection. Everything was perfect. But suddenly from few hours back I can't access any website. Dropbox, Ubuntu One also can't connect. Ping request is also unsuccessful, but I can download through torrent. I am not trying torrent download and browsing at the same time. So, I think it's not an issue about torrent using all the bandwidth. One important point is that this connection works perfectly on Windows on this same PC (My PC is dual-boot). I have tried the way what izx has suggested (using "sudo sh -c 'echo nameserver 8.8.8.8 /etc/resolv.conf'"), but I'm facing the same problem again. Now I can't even ping 8.8.8.8 and google.com. Though I can ping 74.125.228.2 (which is Google IP address) I can't understand what's happening and why this is happening. I'm new in this website many rules and regulations is unknown to me. So, please don't be bothered for my mistakes. Looking forward for help from anyone. Thanks to all.

• Node.js, Cygwin and Socket.io walk into a bar... Node.js throws ENOBUFS and everyone dies...

  I'm hoping someone here can help me out, I'm not having much luck figuring this out myself. I'm running node.js version 0.3.1 on Cygwin. I'm using Connect and Socket.io. I seem to be having some random problems with DNS or something, I haven't quite figured it out. The end result is that I the server is running fine, but when a browser attempts to connect to it the initial HTTP Request works, Socket.io connects, and then the server dies (output below). I don't think it has anything to do with the HTTP request because the server gets a lot data posted to it, and it was receiving requests and responding up until my connection that killed it. I've googled around and the closest thing I've found is DNS being set improperly. It's a network program meant to run only on an internal network, so I've set the nameserver x.x.x.x in my /etc/resolv.conf to the internal DNS. I've also added nameserver 8.8.8.8 in addition. I'm not sure what else to check, but would be grateful of any help. I've edited the source to include && errno != ENOBUFS which now prevents the server from dying, however now the LDAP request isn't working. I'm not sure what the problem is that would cause that though. As I mentioned this is an internal only application, so I set the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf to the DNS servers that are being applied to the host machine. Not sure if this is part of the issue? EDIT 2 Here's some output from gdb --args ./node_g --debug ../myscript.js. I'm not sure if this is related to ENOBUFS, however, as it seems to be disconnecting immediately after connection with Socket.io [New thread 672.0x100] Error: dll starting at 0x76e30000 not found. • .NET WebRequest.PreAuthenticate not quite what it sounds like

  I’ve run into the  problem a few times now: How to pre-authenticate .NET WebRequest calls doing an HTTP call to the server – essentially send authentication credentials on the very first request instead of waiting for a server challenge first? At first glance this sound like it should be easy: The .NET WebRequest object has a PreAuthenticate property which sounds like it should force authentication credentials to be sent on the first request. Looking at the MSDN example certainly looks like it does: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.net.webrequest.preauthenticate.aspx Unfortunately the MSDN sample is wrong. As is the text of the Help topic which incorrectly leads you to believe that PreAuthenticate… wait for it - pre-authenticates. But it doesn’t allow you to set credentials that are sent on the first request. What this property actually does is quite different. It doesn’t send credentials on the first request but rather caches the credentials ONCE you have already authenticated once. Http Authentication is based on a challenge response mechanism typically where the client sends a request and the server responds with a 401 header requesting authentication. Now if you use WebRequest (or WebClient) the default behavior is to re-authenticate on every request that requires authorization. This means if you look in  Fiddler or some other HTTP client Proxy that captures requests you’ll see that each request re-authenticates: Here are two requests fired back to back: and you can see the 401 challenge, the 200 response for both requests. If you watch this same conversation between a browser and a server you’ll notice that the first 401 is also there but the subsequent 401 requests are not present. WebRequest.PreAuthenticate And this is precisely what the WebRequest.PreAuthenticate property does: It’s a caching mechanism that caches the connection credentials for a given domain in the active process and resends it on subsequent requests. This is quite useful as it saves quite a few round trips to the server – bascially it saves one auth request request for every authenticated request you make. In most scenarios I think you’d want to send these credentials this way but one downside to this is that there’s no way to log out the client. Since the client always sends the credentials once authenticated only an explicit operation ON THE SERVER can undo the credentials by forcing another login explicitly (ie. re-challenging with a forced 401 request). Forcing Basic Authentication Credentials on the first Request On a few occasions I’ve needed to send credentials on a first request – mainly to some oddball third party Web Services (why you’d want to use Basic Auth on a Web Service is beyond me – don’t ask but it’s not uncommon in my experience). This is true of certain services that are using Basic Authentication (especially some Apache based Web Services) and REQUIRE that the authentication is sent right from the first request. No challenge first. Ugly but there it is. Now the following works only with Basic Authentication because it’s pretty straight forward to create the Basic Authorization ‘token’ in code since it’s just an unencrypted encoding of the user name and password into base64. As you might guess this is totally unsecure and should only be used when using HTTPS/SSL connections (i’m not in this example so I can capture the Fiddler trace and my local machine doesn’t have a cert installed, but for production apps ALWAYS use SSL with basic auth). However, this only works with Basic Auth because you can actually create the authentication credentials easily on the client because it’s essentially clear text. The same doesn’t work for Windows or Digest authentication since you can’t easily create the authentication token on the client and send it to the server. Another issue with this approach is that PreAuthenticate has no effect when you manually force the authentication. As far as Web Request is concerned it never sent the authentication information so it’s not actually caching the value any longer. In effect you’ll end up with one extra 401 request in this scenario, which is still better than 401 challenges on each request. Getting Access to WebRequest in Classic .NET Web Service Clients If you’re running a classic .NET Web Service client (non-WCF) one issue with the above is how do you get access to the WebRequest to actually add the custom headers to do the custom Authentication described above? One easy way is to implement a partial class that allows you add headers with something like this: public partial class TaxService { protected NameValueCollection Headers = new NameValueCollection(); public void AddHttpHeader(string key, string value) { this.Headers.Add(key,value); } public void ClearHttpHeaders() { this.Headers.Clear(); } protected override WebRequest GetWebRequest(Uri uri) { HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest) base.GetWebRequest(uri); request.Headers.Add(this.Headers); return request; } } where TaxService is the name of the .NET generated proxy class. In code you can then call AddHttpHeader() anywhere to add additional headers which are sent as part of the GetWebRequest override. Nice and simple once you know where to hook it. For WCF there’s a bit more work involved by creating a message extension as described here: http://weblogs.asp.net/avnerk/archive/2006/04/26/Adding-custom-headers-to-every-WCF-call-_2D00_-a-solution.aspx. FWIW, I think that HTTP header manipulation should be readily available on any HTTP based Web Service client DIRECTLY without having to subclass or implement a special interface hook. But alas a little extra work is required in .NET to make this happen Not a Common Problem, but when it happens… This has been one of those issues that is really rare, but it’s bitten me on several occasions when dealing with oddball Web services – a couple of times in my own work interacting with various Web Services and a few times on customer projects that required interaction with credentials-first services. Since the servers determine the protocol, we don’t have a choice but to follow the protocol. • Nginx php-fpm high cpu usage

  I have a problem with a high traffic wordpress, super high CPU load under nginx php-fpm, I am caching with apc, and memcached, spent 2-3 days tweaking configs and looking for answers it seems to me that php-fpm takes up all the cpu available no matter how many max_children i set if i set 5 then the load is 20% each, if i set 20 then the load adds up till 90% i tried static and dynamic server is 2x3.0Ghz 6GB Ram SSD in raid 10 on ubuntu 12.04 x64 utpime: 17:27:51 up 2:19, 1 user, load average: 29.79, 28.08, 26.29 what can be the issue?

• VMWare Esxi Looking for Bottlenecks

  I have a VMWare ESxi box, 22GB ram, Dual Quad Core Xeon, 2 Sas drives + Write caching raid controller etc. Anyways, have about 30 small XP VM's running on it and starting to get some very slow boot times and other performance issues. I THINK its I/O but looking at the graphs not too sure what to look for. Any ideas on what to look for would be appreciated. Here is the data I've got so far: (I feel like my IO is high but not sure what to bench it against)

• RAID options for a LAMP web server

  I'm due to set up a LAMP web server with four drives and a RAID controller to act as a web server. The drives are 146Gb SAS, and the machine has two quad core processors and 16Gb RAM. There will be very few write operations to the MySQL database, and I'll be using as much caching as possible to reduce disk I/O. Question is: Would I be better off splitting the drives into two RAID 1 arrays, splitting up sequential and random disk I/O, or would I get better overall performance putting them all in a single RAID 1+0 array?
