• Garbled text in Screen [closed]

  The graphical Interface in my system is garbled with some text. At the beginning I thought it was due to java and tomcat that I installed. But after removing java and tomcat, it is still the same. I am using ubuntu server and i have installed xfce desktop environment with oboard softkey I have added my dmesg output to this message. What is the problem here. I am not able to figure it out. Assuming an NTFS volume is protected with BitLocker, does this reduce the failure tolerance? Would a power failure during a write to an NTFS volume, that's protected with BitLocker, be more prone to corruption than on an unencrypted NTFS volume?

• Windows 7 Remote Desktop Connection Rendering Each Frame?

  When connecting to my work computer over VPN and Remote Desktop Connection, images and videos are sent back one frame at a time, which really slows things down. I'm familiar with the "Experience" tab while connecting and the only options I have checked are "Visual styles" and "Persistent bitmap caching". Isn't it possible to work remotely that is more similar to screen sharing over Skype, where there is a lag but not every single frame has to be rendered and passed back to me one at a time? Both computers are running Windows 7 Professional.

• Drupal on an NFS share has terrible performance

  We have a setup where a Drupal 7 site with the following setup - a VMware ESXi 4.1 host server running a web vm and an NFS VM. The web VM is using Apache and mod_php. The site is still in development thus we have to turn off all forms of caching due to the frequently-updated files. Each page request takes around 15-20 seconds to complete. Profiling the PHP code shows that the vast majority of time (normally over 90%) is taking by all the is_dir(), is_file() function calls that load up the modules. I've increased PHP's realpath cache size to several megs and an strace shows that the lstat calls then drop from over 200 to around 6 and stat() decreases a bit (around 600 calls). However, while this has shaved off quite a bit of time, I am simply unable to break past the 10 second per request barrier. Is there a way to get better performance out of this setup that doesn't involve caching? • Use Cherokee Instead of nginx in Front of Varnish to Get HTTP 1.1 Optimizations?

  We have been running nginx - uWSGI, and now we are evaluating putting Varnish as a caching layer between nginx and uWSGI (similar to http://www.heroku.com/how/architecture). But, nginx only supports HTTP 1.0 on the back so it will have to create new connections with Varnish for each request. Many recommend running nginx in front of Varnish, but wouldn't it make much more sense to use something like Cherokee so that you eliminate the HTTP connection overhead since it supports HTTP 1.1 on the back?

• What is a good way to render a site or portions of a site into a desktop gadget/widget?

  I guess a better way to ask this question (or an alternative to it, in my case) would be to first ask how to do this instead. Namely, I want to have a gadget on my desktop (not just in a browser window) with options such as overlaying on top of other windows, offline caching, etc. that is dedicated expressly to a given website (no browsing functions or menus). Be even more awesome if I could indicate a specific physical part of the website to show in the gadget.

• IIS7 doesn't monitor changes across symlinks

  I've used the mklink utility to create a symlink to a directory of web content. IIS7 doesn't "see" changes any classic ASP files in this linked directory without issuing an iisreset. I've disabled caching and file changes are picked up on other static files (such as .html) but .asp files are ignored.

Does Tomcat or Jetty (or any Servlet container) offer a way to cache dynamically generated pages? Or would I need to use a caching reverse proxy like Squid to accomplish that?

• Force Windows 7 to store thumbnails locally

  I want Windows 7 to store thumbnails cache files in the same folder as the files (thumbs.db) instead of using the centralized location for all thumbnails (By default %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer). How would one achieve this effect? Alternatively, if the former is implausible, I'd settle for no thumbnail caching at all, forcing Windows to regenerate thumbnails each time a folder is accessed.

• Apache on Ubuntu very slow on inital calls, very fast afterwards

  I own an Ubuntu 10 VPS Server with Apache 2 hosting a Magento website. The first hit to the site from any client takes about 15-20 sec, while the subsequent hits from the same client take 0-1 sec. I suppose it doesn't have to do with Magento caching, because this happens also when the first call is on a very light page and the next calls are on heavy ones. Does anyone have an idea on what is going wrong here?

  I have read about scaling (in terms of terminology and methods). This got me confused about the following: On a single computer, running a web server (say apache), if the system administrator adds a front, caching, reverse-proxy such as Varnish, which in that scenario increase the amount of requests this server is able to handle. My question: Setting up such cache increases the capacity of the server to handle work, hence scales it, but without increasing neither the amount of nodes or the node's capacity. What is the name for this type of scaling?

• Output of free -m on a Linux server

  I can see from this page here: http://www.linuxatemyram.com/ That the correct amount of free ram is on the "-/+ buffers/cache" line. The extra ram being used is for disk caching. However, I noticed that the total amount of memory used listed in "-/+ buffers/cache" line is significantly less than the sum total of the "RES" column of the processes shown in top. And AFAIK, the "RES" column is how much physical memory is being used by a process. How do you explain this discrepancy?

  I'm trying Google's PageSpeed online service Ironically, it's primarily highlighting Google's own services as something that needs improvement on my site 1) jQuery from Google: blocking. So I moved all javascript from <head> to the end of the document before </body>. That helped 2) Linking to external Google Font CSS (in <head>): blocking. But the font is critical to the design of the page and should load before much else 3) Google Analytics: Caching is not good. (Google has set it internally to 2 hours expiration). Don't know how to change this (this is also placed at the bottom of page) The Google Font is highlighted as a big priority to change. How can I fix this? Where/how should I call the the font?

  Hi All, A V2.0 beta has been released for the Windows 7 Phone database Rapid Repository, this can be downloaded at the following: http://rapidrepository.codeplex.com/ Along with the new View feature which greatly enhances querying and performance, various bugs have been fixed including a more serious bug with the caching that caused the GetAll() method to sometimes return inconsistent results (I’m a little bit embarrased by this bug). If you are currently using V1.0 in development, I would recommend swapping in the beta immediately. A full release will be available very shortly, I just need a few more days of testing and some input from other users/testers.   *Breaking Changes* The only real change is the RapidContext has moved under the main RapidRepository namespace.
