• Populating an association with children in factory_girl

  I have a model Foo that has_many 'Bar'. I have a factory_girl factory for each of these objects. The factory for Bar has an association to Foo; it will instantiate a Foo when it creates the Bar. I'd like a Factory that creates a Foo that contains a Bar. Ideally this Bar would be created through the :bar factory, and respect the build strategy (create/build) used to create the Foo. I know I could just call the :bar factory and then grab the Foo reference from the new Bar. I'd like to avoid this; in my test case, the important object is Foo; calling the Bar factory seems a bit circuitous. Also, I can see the need for a Foo with multiple Bars. Is this possible in factory_girl? How do you define this relationship in the parent?

  I have a page with two scroll bars. I am using the scrollTo jquery plugin to jump to other areas on the same page. The problem is I only want the inner div to scrollTo and the outer div to remain at the top of the screen. • How to tell if XUL menupopup opens down or up?

  I have an extension that can be placed on any toolbar (like the bookmarks, menu or status bars). In general, the context menu opens downward, but when placed on the status bar and Firefox is closed to the bottom of the screen, the context menu opens upward. I'd like to try reordering the context menu based on its up or down orientation, so that the same options are always closest to the mouse. For example, when opened downward it appears like this: -- (mouse) --------------- - MenuItem A - --------------- - MenuItem B - --------------- - MenuItem C - --------------- - ....... - --------------- When it opens upwards its like this: --------------- - MenuItem A - --------------- - MenuItem B - --------------- - MenuItem C - --------------- - ....... - --------------- -- (mouse) However, I'd like "MenuItem A" to appear closest to the mouse at all times, since its the most common item. I can render the items dynamically, so I really just need to find out the orientation.

• How do I pan the contents of a div when the right mouse button is dragged?

  I need a cross browser way of capturing the right mouse click, preventing the default context menu and making it where when the user drags the mouse they can pan the contents of a div. This is largely similar to Google maps in that they will grip the contents and drag to see what they want. No external libraries please. I am already capturing the events, and know that this will prevent default actions: if (evt.preventDefault) { evt.preventDefault(); } else { evt.returnValue = false; } But this doesn't prevent the context menu AFAIK. Edit: I really am unsure about how to prevent the context menu and what the best way to manipulate the scroll bars would be? examples would be great

  Hey guys, I am working on a game, and wanted to add a screen that would open when the user clicked on certain objects. The screen would be laid out to have an image on the left, a title on the top right, and text below the title. I have a few problems with this, 1) How would I create the popup box? (preferably with rounded edges) 2) How would I wrap the text (in front of the picture, but not outside the popup-box, I may even need vertical scroll bars) 3) How would I account for different screen resolutions (would they even make a difference?) • Static lib that links another static lib and qmake? Odd linking error

  I have two qt .pro files, both using the lib TEMPLATE and staticlib CONFIG. The first library (lets call it 'core') is a dependency for the second lib (I'll call it 'foo'). In fact, there's a class in foo that extends a class in core, I will call this class Bar. When I instantiate the class (which is defined and implemented in foo, but extends a class (Bar) from core) in another project (not a lib) I get the following linking error: /usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols: Bar::Bar() Basically, the linker cannot find the class in the core lib that has been derived in the foo lib, but ONLY when I instantiate the class in a third project that is using both libs. Is this behaviour expected? Regards, Dan O Update: I fixed it by directly invoking the Bars constructor in the third project before using derived class... does anyone know why I need to do this?

Would each call to fopen/fgets/fread interefere with each other if various people are browsing the same page ? If so, how can this be solved in C ? (This is a Linux server, compiling is done with gcc and this is for a CGI website programmed in C.) • ( Flex ) How can we get an imagesnapshot of the entire component without scrollbars?

  Hi there I can take snapshot of a component. But the problem is the component is lil bigger with scroll bars. The saved image has scrollbars (only the visible area is getting saved). What i need is I want the entire component to be saved as an image. This exact functionality is available while we print the component using FlexPrintJob, where by setting the FlexPrintJobScaleType.NONE. • MS Chart Control for ASP.NET 100% Stacked Bar Chart Question.

  Hello All, I am trying to display a chart with several different bars that represent a ratio of some values. For example, one bar may say that there are 25 items in three different groups (maybe dirty, clean, and broken) and of those 25 items x items from each category add up to the total. Later the data will dynamically change and be displayed accordingly. But for now all I want to do is be able to display three different values on the same bar. Unfortunately, whatever properties I need to bind the data to are buried somewhere in the menus and I cannot seem to find them. Do any of you guys have experience with this sort of chart?

• Designing a WPF map control.

  I'm thinking about making a simple map control in WPF, and am thinking about the design of the basic map interface and am wondering if anyone has some good advice for this. What I'm thinking of is using a ScrollViewer (sans scroll bars) as my "view port" and then stacking everything up on top of a canvas. From Z-Index=0 up, I'm thinking: Base canvas for lat/long calculations, control positioning, Z-Index stacking. Multiple Grid elements to represent the maps at different zoom levels. Using a grid to make tiling easier. Map objects with positional data. Map controls (zoom slider, overview, etc). Scroll viewer with mouse move events for panning and zooming. Any comments suggestions on how I should be building this?

• Agilist, Heal Thyself!

  I’ve been meaning to blog about a great experience I had earlier in the year at Prairie Dev Con Calgary.  Myself and Steve Rogalsky did a session that we called “Agilist, Heal Thyself!”.  We used a format that was new to me, but that Steve had seen used at another conference.  What we did was start by asking the audience to give us a list of challenges they had had when adopting agile.  We wrote them all down, then had everybody vote on the most interesting ones.  Then we split into two groups, and each group was assigned one of the agile challenges.  We had 20 minutes to discuss the challenge, and suggest solutions or approaches to improve things.  At the end of the 20 minutes, each of the groups gave a brief summary of their discussion and learning's, then we mixed up the groups and repeated with another 2 challenges. The 2 groups I was part of had some really interesting discussions, and suggestions: Unfinished Stories at the end of Sprints The first agile challenge we tackled, was something that every single Scrum team I have worked with has struggled with.  What happens when you get to the end of a Sprint, and there are some stories that are only partially completed.  The team in question was getting very de-moralized as they felt that every Sprint was a failure as they never had a set of fully completed stories. How do you avoid this? and/or what do you do when it happens? There were 2 pieces of advice that were well received: 1. Try to bring stories to completion before starting new ones.  This is advice I give all my Scrum teams.  If you have a 3-week sprint, what happens all too often is you get to the end of week 2, and a lot of stories are almost done; but almost none are completely done.  This is a Bad Thing.  I encourage the teams I work with to only start a new story as a very last resort.  If you finish your task look at the stories in progress and see if there’s anything you can do to help before moving onto a new story.  In the daily standup, put a focus on seeing what stories got completed yesterday, if a few days go by with none getting completed, be sure this fact is visible to the team and do something about it.  Something I’ve been doing recently is introducing WIP (Work In Progress) limits while using Scrum.  My current team has 2-week sprints, and we usually have about a dozen or stories in a sprint.  We instituted a WIP limit of 4 stories.  If 4 stories have been started but not finished then nobody is allowed to start new stories.  This made it obvious very quickly that our QA tasks were our bottleneck (we have 4 devs, but only 1.5 testers).  The WIP limit forced the developers to start to pickup QA tasks before moving onto the next dev tasks, and we ended our sprints with many more stories completely finished than we did before introducing WIP limits. 2. Rather than using time-boxed sprints, why not just do away with them altogether and go to a continuous flow type approach like KanBan.  Limit WIP to keep things under control, but don’t have a fixed time box at the end of which all tasks are supposed to be done.  This eliminates the problem almost entirely.  At some points in the project (releases) you need to be able to burn down all the half finished stories to get a stable release build, but this probably occurs less often than every sprint, and there are alternative approaches to achieve it using branching strategies rather than forcing your team to try to get to Zero WIP every 2-weeks (e.g. when you are ready for a release, create a new branch for any new stories, but finish all existing stories in the current branch and release it). Trying to Introduce Agile into a team with previous Bad Agile Experiences One of the agile adoption challenges somebody described, was he was in a leadership role on a team he had recently joined – lets call him Dave.  This team was currently very waterfall in their ALM process, but they were about to start on a new green-field project.  Dave wanted to use this new project as an opportunity to do things the “right way”, using an Agile methodology like Scrum, adopting TDD, automated builds, proper branching strategies, etc.  The problem he was facing is everybody else on the team had previously gone through an “Agile Adoption” that was a horrible failure.  Dave blamed this failure on the consultant brought in previously to lead this agile transition, but regardless of the reason, the team had very negative feelings towards agile, and was very resistant to trying it out again.  Dave possibly had the authority to try to force the team to adopt Agile practices, but we all know that doesn’t work very well.  What was Dave to do? Ultimately, the best advice was to question *why* did Dave want to adopt all these various practices. Rather than trying to convince his team that these were the “right way” to run a dev project, and trying to do a Big Bang approach to introducing change.  He would be better served by identifying problems the team currently faces, have a discussion with the team to get everybody to agree that specific problems existed, then have an open discussion about ways to address those problems.  This way Dave could incrementally introduce agile practices, and he doesn’t even need to identify them as “agile” practices if he doesn’t want to.  For example, when we discussed with Dave, he said probably the teams biggest problem was long periods without feedback from users, then finding out too late that the software is not going to meet their needs.  Rather than Dave jumping right to introducing Scrum and all it entails, it would be easier to get buy-in from team if he framed it as a discussion of existing problems, and brainstorming possible solutions.  And possibly most importantly, don’t try to do massive changes all at once with a team that has not bought-into those changes.  Taking an incremental approach has a greater chance of success. I see something similar in my day job all the time too.  Clients who for one reason or another claim to not be fans of agile (or not ready for agile yet).  But then they go on to ask me to help them get shorter feedback cycles, quicker delivery cycles, iterative development processes, etc.  It’s kind of funny at times, sometimes you just need to phrase the suggestions in terms they are using and avoid the word “agile”.   Hello all, If i apply a property to a parent widget it is automatically applied for child widgets too.. Is there any way of preventing this?? For example if i set background color as white in a dialog the button,combo boxes and scroll bars looks white as it lacks it native look(have to say it's unpleasant & ugly).. Is there any way that i can apply the stylesheets only to a parent widget not to it's children??? Experts help please..

• Steps in subclassing UINavigationController

  Hello I would like to subclass the UINavigationController to get some more freedom in regards to the appearance of the controller. I have some graphics for the different parts, bars, buttons, text etc. Looking at the UINavigationController header file I get little help, I don't know where to start out. I have never subclassed/overridden a UIKit component before, it seems it is a bit like playing Sherlock Holmes. What is the approach? How do I know what to override to get a a specific piece of graphics "injected" the correct place? Do I need to subclass UINavigationBar, UIBarButtonItem etc. etc to get the complete customized look? How do I know if something is off limits in regards to being approved by Apple? Hope someone can point me in the right direction, I have only been able to find examples of changing small parts of the controller, not a full customization by subclassing. Am I going about this the wrong way? Thanks:)

• How can I set up jnlp for use with Sinatra?

  I have a website currently running Sinatra and a bunch of other technologies. I wanted to get progress bars running, but that's been a no go. So, a friend of mine whipped up a quick upload in Java, and I'm running that through scponly (chrooted) to make sure they can't do anything funny with changing directories and suchlike. But how can I start the jnlp file from Sinatra? Is it as simply as making it a link and then letting it be downloaded by the user? This code suggests otherwise, but there are a lot of things in there I don't understand (probably because I'm not reading it in the context of the larger program there).

• Scroll bar not maintaining its position in ListView (ASP.net)

  Hi I have a listview inside a DIV which shows the scroll bars. At one time, let's say, 10 rows can be seen. I scroll down and click Edit on 25 row. To my surprise, the scroll goes to the first row (although if I go back to 25th row, the row is in edit mode) My issue, how I can make sure that the scroll bar maintains its position to 25th row after clicking on Edit button? • How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

  I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. The situation is even worse on my external monitor. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. How can I write the .reg files such that the settings can be correctly applied with a single sign in?

  I want to do some graphic dialogs for my script but don't know how. I hear something about GTK-Server or something like that. If someone know how to link bash with tcl/tk I also be satisfied. Please do not post something like "change to C++" because my project must be a script in BASH, there are no other option. Any ideas? P.S. Sorry for bad english! EDIT: Thanks for answers but I don't want "graphics" like colors in console, but windows that shows like hmmmm..... net browser which I can move, minimalize etc. I will test xmessage, but I don't think that will be that what I searching for. EDIT2: And one more thing. I don't want make a simple dialog like yes/no, but some interface like progress bars and buttons, something like game :)

• Flex chart display with no datapoint

  I need to display price of item for every date in the month. The chart can be Bar chart or plot chart. Question: Suppose there is no data available for 01/15/2010 then, Is there a way to display (01/15/2010) on x axis but no (bar or plot point) corresponding y axis point ? i.e. there will be a empty space between 2 bars or plot points. Currently i am using 0 , But 0 is a valid value. Let me know if such a display is possible.

• What CSS should I use to create a series of horizontal, non-wrapping blocks?

  I have a set of dynamically generated content - anywhere between 1 and about 25 blocks (each of which I want to be about 250px wide. Clearly, this can run off-screen, but that's fine since my design allows for horizontal scrolling (using jQuery - I don't want the browser to do it with its own scroll bars). So what CSS - cross-browser - is the best approach? Floats seem to wrap unreliably, and the dynamic nature of the content which changes frequently through ajax calls - means that recalculating the container width is not very practical. Other CSS-based option?

• Toggling audio on click?

  please look at this fiddle http://jsfiddle.net/rabelais/yLdkj/1/ The above fiddle shows three bars that on hover play audios. How do I change this so the music plays and pauses on click instead.
