• Diagnosing and debugging LAN congestion / connection issues

  What are the top N tools / methodologies used to diagnose and repair network issues? Given a LAN, for example, where users are able to consistently ping an outside server, but any data intensive connections are flaky; how would you begin solving the network issues? I imagine issues like congestion, bandwidth constraints, throughput constraints, etc. are all factors, but I don't know how to diagnose those issues. I'm especially interested in LAN environments (rather than WAN)

• Remote Access to MSSQL Database From 1&1 Hosting [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? 5 answers I just paid ($6 /month) for shared Windows hosting through 1&1 hosting. I was having trouble connecting to my database from home, so I sent an email to support. I received the following response: As we checked your concern here in our end, please be advised that due to limitation of Shared Hosting services, there is no option to connect the database to your SQL Management Studio or through Visual Studio. It is only possible for Dedicated Server package. You may only access the database using MyLittleAdmin at the Control Panel. A dedicated server is like $200 per month! What is the point of having database access only through a web console? I feel I am missing something here, or maybe the support agent is. Is there a way to access my MS SQL database on their servers through Visual Studio or SQL Management Studio from my machine? If not, is there a web host who allows this for less than $200 a month? EDIT: Marked as duplicate... I'm not asking for a list of web hosts, I'm asking how to remotely connect to my MSSQL database through 1&1's services.

• Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054) during remote logoff in RealVNC

  I am using RealVNC 4.5 Enterprise on my Windows 7 client. I use this to connect to a remote system which is also running RealVNC 4.5 (on Windows 7 again). And then i logoff the remote system (server) and all of a sudden the realvnc viewer on the client closes with the message : "Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054)" It also asks if i want to reconnect again. Any idea why this is happening and how do i resolve this?

• Debugging Samba/CUPS printer sharing with Windows

  I've got a HP Deskjet hooked up to a Slackware 12.2 box. I've got CUPS set up and can print a test page from the box just fine. I've also got Samba set up and have a couple file shares that work fine. I'm trying to share that HP Deskjet out via Samba, but I can't get it to show up in any Windows system. I see the server and its file shares in Windows networking, but when I open the Printers, no printer shows up. Running net view \\servername from the command line lists the file shares, but no printers. Here's the pertinent part of my smb.conf, if that helps: [global] workgroup = HOMENET security = share hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. load printers = yes printcap name = cups printing = cups log file = /var/log/samba.%m max log size = 50 [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no public = yes writable = no printable = yes guest only = yes Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking for potential causes? After all, which is more important, some monitoring or backup testing?  Backup testing, of course. Monitoring is frequently one of those things that you do when can get around to it.  Well, as you can see at the right, I have your round tuit ready to go. What if I told you that you could get monitoring on your servers for up-time, job completion, performance, all the standard stuff? And what if I told you that you wouldn’t need to install and configure another server in your environment to get it done? • Fiber-Optic Cable Trick Brings Remote Triggering to Older Flashes

  Many older flashes lack for a jack to input a sync cable and rely exclusively on a simple slave mode triggered by the primary flash. This hack uses a piece of scrap fiber optic cable to trigger the flash in bright conditions. Using a flash as an optical slave indoors isn’t much of a problem, but if you introduce bright light (such as outdoor lighting conditions), the ambient light can overpower the small on-camera flash and render the optical slave function useless. To overcome this, Marcell over at Fiber Strobe (a blog dedicated to cataloging experiments in incorporating fiber optics into photography) came up with a simple work around. By using some foam crafting materials and tape, he whipped up a simple mount for a strand of scrap fiber optic cable to connect between the on-camera flash and the sensor on the slave flash. Once attached it works exactly like as sync cable would, except it’s transmitting a pulse of light instead of a pulse of electricity. Hit up the link below for more pictures and a build guide.   So I was on our laptop, SSH'd into my desktop, dropping some mad bashfu skill. There was one command I ran which was particularly skilful. I'm now about minute walk from the laptop and I really want that command here on my desktop, so that I can run it again. I realise I've already spent more time that it would have taken to rewrite it, but this has raised a common issue I have with bash history. I know I can force it to update each command, but I haven't... so: Is there any way to get a history from a different, live bash session?

  I have a newly install ubuntu installed the mysql server. After the basic config, I changed the my.cnf file and commented the bind_address I can start the server and added iptable for 3306. I also add the privileges to mysql server as follow: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON . TO 'root'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'P@ssw0rd' WITH GRANT OPTION; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; exit However after connected from the mysql workbench, it shows no database. But it seems that have login. Anyone have faced that or can help me? Thx!

When Installing Nagios there is an option to run NsClient++, but I went with the WMI Checks because it is agent less. What are the advantages of using NsClient++ for Nagios? Also would calling too many commands through WMI or SSH hinder the performance of the remote host?

• Debugging a Drobo that chokes Windows 7x64 When Plugged In

  I've had a love hate relationship with my Drobo for a long time. After two years of using it on a Linux box, I moved it over to a Windows 7 machine where it seemed to work just fine for a long time, but it was under very light usage. Mainly backups that never actually happened. Recently I began using it for additional backup services (through CrashPlan, which is great). This means the Drobo gets a lot more usage. Also it means that something interesting happens, the Drobo can choke my system on startup. Here's what I mean: Start computer without Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard services disabled: 105s Start computer with Drobo plugged in Crashplan disabled, Drobo Dashboard enabled: 250s (and 1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard disabled: 250s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, Crashplan and Drobo Dashboard enabled: 300s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) If I yank the USB plug on the Drobo the CPU usage goes down to nothing very quickly. The slow startup in the fourth scenario is because CrashPlan is trying desperately to load stuff up on the H: drive before it gives up, so I've disabled it for the time being. So here's my question: What the heck is going on when I plug the drobo in? I've fired up Process Explorer and see that the System process is hogging the CPU, specifically it's an ntoskrnl.exe/KdPollBreakIn thread that's going ape. Is this something that's wrong with Drobo? Windows? Any idea on how to find out? If it matters, here's tech info: Athlon 64x2 4400, 2GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate, Drobo USB (2x1TB, 2x320GB)

• Node app crashes after a while on micro EC2 instance even with supervisor

  I'm using supervisor to start my node.js application on a micro EC2 instance. However, the app only stays running for some time until it eventually shuts down. Not exactly sure how long the app stays running but I'm guessing for about a few hours or so. Sometimes less. My question is where on the remote server should I be looking in order to debug this kind of issue? I'm running an Amazon Linux AMI.

• Software Diagnostics Tool recommendations for Debugging a Windows 8 freeze

  I've had my HP Pavillion dv6 laptop since last November - and it has had 8GB RAM and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD installed since the start. I use it for software development and it's had a Windows 8 RTM installation since early September. Yesterday I had to give a presentation at a customer site - so used Powerpoint for the first time since installing Win8... since that point my machine has 'frozen' every 2 hours or so after startup. There doesn't seem to be any easy to see reason behind the freeze - the system just freezes, even if I have left it idle with just a desktop there. My immediate suspicion is that the SSD is the mostly likely cause of the problem. I've looked at some of the questions on here - e.g. How do I troubleshoot hardware issues related to a computer freeze/crash? - but don't really want to start taking my laptop apart. Another suspicion is that this might be related to the WiFi adapter (Broadcom 802.11n) since I have noticed that this doesn't seem to play perfectly with things like Hyper-V in Win8. Can anyone recommend any software diagnostic tools that I can run in order to evaluate the health of the SSD or of other parts of the system? Thanks Stuart P.S. I doubt Powerpoint is the cause of this, but I may use it as an excuse never to use it again... More realistically perhaps something got damaged during travel to the customer site?

  I want to define bash functions and aliases in my remote shell automatically on login. I can't put the definitions into .profile or similar because the users I log in as are often shared with others who use the same systems and I don't have control of this. What I'm trying to do is execute a few bash function definitions in the remote process and then continue as a login shell. In KGDB official site they have given KGDB patch for x86, but not for ARM. Is it possible to debug my ARM linux kernel on AT91SAM9261?

  This is more or less the inverse of my previous question. I need to debug some HTTP requests that I am making. Since these requests arise from the use of some external libraries, sometimes I am not sure of what is the actual data I am sending. Is there some dummy server (for Linux) that accepts HTTP requests and just prints them somewhere so that I can inspect them?
