CTRL + SHIFT + G : Selecting a file name and pressing this key combination will open this file in the editor. ALT + Mouse Left click + drag : This will let you select (to copy or cut) text vertically. CTRL + F5 : Find in files in subfolders. CTRL + M : To locate the matching end/begin braces. Regular expression support in find and replace. CTRL + F9 : Compare files Editable syntax hilighting Macros Abundance of free extensions Hope there are people out there who use Textpad.

• Too Many Different Cell Formats

  I have a massive file with 10 sheets recreated from scratch, 12 sheets updated, 5 sheets loaded with raw data, and 7 sheets that are used by the macros for the report. I have recently added a new sheet and am running into the Excel "Too many different cell formats" problem. I have read some of the google search results and they say I should simplify the formatting, but I don't even know how I got up to 4000 distinct cell formats, let alone how much I'm using which ones, so I can remove some. It is also popping up some times the file is run, but not all, until such time as it comes up, and then it happens every time it is run. Since the macro is doing so much of the work, including creating the 10 sheets from scratch, I am not sure what to do. Does anyone know of a Macro I could run to get a listing of all the cell formats and how many cells are using them? Does anyone know of a program they trust to help remove excess cell formats? A few years later, I realized Fred Brooks won the Turing award. Some years after that, after a few large development projects, I started understanding what he was talking about. Are there any other books about software development on a meta/philosophical level—not in the sense of design patterns, templates, or even lisp macros—but at a level where ideas are expressed without code?

• A report writer for non-programmers?

  Hello, we are wanting for users to be able to write their own reports in our application. It is a web application. We don't care if they must download an application in order to create reports, but we need for them to be able to print off reports from the web in PDF format or similar. The report writer is to be used by non-programmers, or at best very light programmers(like the ones that make VBA macros and such). (the writer is not a core part of the program though. So if there is a learning curve, then that is acceptable to a certain extent) We were looking at Crystal Reports but it seems like it'll cost $7000 which is just way too much for right now(though our system is very flexible so could support it eventually). We are also looking at Fast Reports which seems pretty promising, but I'm not sure the report writer would be easy for non-programmers to grasp. Can someone recommend a good report writer for non programmers that won't break the bank?

• Visual Studio Windows Forms Designer keyboard shortcuts

  Extremely basic question. Are there common actions I can perform using keyboard shortcuts in the Windows Forms designer in Visual Studio (2008)? Alternately, could I add my own keyboard shortcuts (either through settings or macros)? It'd really be nice if I could, for example, set a control to dock/undock in its parent container by typing Alt+D. Or if I could set a control's name just by typing Alt+N and typing the name. Things like that. It's just kind of tedious to click on the item, scroll in the Properties grid to the property I want to change, type the new value, scroll to the next property I want to change, etc. Which is why I have a feeling this functionality is in there already, or is easily configurable, and I just don't know about it.

  I'm working on a OpenGL project that I would like to port to embedded systems that support OpenGL|ES. Since OpenGL|ES is a subset of OpenGL how hard would it be to compile my OpenGL application on an embedded system? (Assuming that my OpenGL code is in the limits of OpenGL|ES) I guess what I'm wondering is: is it possible to dircetly wrap my OpenGL calls with MACROS to make it compatible with OpenGL|ES API call names? Are there any calls specific to OpenGL|ES that I would have to implement? Sorry, if I'm not clear. Thank you.

• Middleware for MongoDB or CouchDB with jQuery Ajax/JSON frontend

  I've been using the following web development stack for a few years: java/spring/hibernate/mysql/jetty/wicket/jquery For certain requirements, I'm considering switching to a NoSQL datastore with an AJAX frontend. I would probably build the frontend with jQuery and communicate with the web application middleware using JSON. I'm leaning toward MongoDB because of more dynamic query capabilities, but am still considering CouchDB. I'm not sure what to use in the middle. Probably something RESTful? My preference is to stick with Java (or maybe Scala or Groovy) since I'm using tools like Drools for rules and Shiro for security. But then again, I want to pick something that is quick an easy to work with, so I'm open to other solutions. If you are building ajax/json/nosql solutions, I'd like to hear details about what tools you are using and any pros/cons you've found to using them. Thanks!

• Debugging ADT Eclipse Plugin Install

  I've installed the Android SDK and the ADT plugin, but Android doesn't show up in the WindowPreferences... dialog. I'm running Galileo. If I go to the Installation Details part of the About Eclipse dialog, it says that I have 0.9.6 of Android DDMS and Android Development Tools. I can run adb from the command line. I tried going around the uninstall/reinstall loop once. I'm on Windows Vista. I also have 2.7.7 of the Scala plugin installed, but I tried uninstalling that. Any ideas on what I should try next?   I'm having trouble with running a bare example. I'm using this to declare a function in Cython coming from cinterf.h header: cdef extern from 'cinterf.h': int xsb_init_string(char* p_xsb_path) The declaration in the C header file is: DllExport extern int call_conv xsb_init_string(char *); both DllExport and call_conv are macros defined elsewhere, and resolve to GCC compiler directives. do I have to use those as well inside cdef to fully match the declaration? When I call xsb_init_string() as: xsb_init_string('some string') The python interpreter gives me: 'ImportError: ./py_ext.so: undefined symbol: xsb_init_string' Am I declaring the xsb_init_string() signature properly, inside cdef?

• External XMPP component - Anyone know a Tutorial or Open Source Example please?

  Hi All, I want to run an XMPP server (Openfire) and register an external component to handle the messages it will recieve (using the Whack library). The external component will run my game logic and I will be using XMPP to send player moves to the server and status updates in the other direction. The bonus with XMPP is that we get built in chat for free. The trouble is, although Ignite look fairly established, I can't find a tutorial on how to write, register and debug an External XMPP component written with Whack, there are very few in general for that matter. I am not invested in either the server implementation or the External Component library, java is just my language of choice. If I was to move to Erlang or Scala or something it would have to be a very simple in that language.   I've been using c++ for a while, and I'm familiar with normal try/catch. However, I now find myself on Windows, coding in VisualStudio for COM development. Several parts of the code use things like: TRY { ... do stuff } CATCH_ALL(e) { ... issue a warning } END_CATCH_ALL; What's the point of these macros? What benefit do they offer over the built-in try/catch? I've tried googling this, but "try vs TRY" is hard to search for.

  I am looking for a free static checker for C99 code (including GCC extensions) with the ability to explicitly say "these preprocessor macros are always defined." I need that last part because I am compiling embedded code for a single target processor. The compiler (Microchip's C32, GCC based) sets a macro based on the selected processor, which is then used in the PIC32 header files to select a processor-specific header file to include. cppcheck therefore fails because it detects the 30 different #ifdefs used to select one of the many possible PIC32 processors, tries to analyse all possible combinations of these plus all other #defines, and fails. For example, if splint could process C99 code, I would use splint -D__PIC32_FEATURE_SET__=460 -D__32MX460F512L__ \ -D__LANGUAGE_C__ -I/path/to/my/includes source.c

  How deep is your knowledge on Office suites? Personally i don't like them, i hate create and manage word documents, excel datasheets etc. etc. I'm not talking about opening a word document and write some text or calculate sum and division on excel; i'm talking about advanced features like revisions, vba macros and so on. I have a co-worker, actually he's a talented functional analyst, that don't know anything about programming but he's kind a monster guru on Microsoft Office suite. When he sits on my desk and asks me to open and modify some of his hardly complicated Microsoft Excel multicolor multipivotal recursive datasheet, ehm, i feel like a baby in front of a nuclear plant console.It' not a great feeling if you know what i mean. As programmer, do you feel guilty about not knowing office suites enough?

• Lombok with Play 2

  What about Lombok integration with Play Framework 2? I really like Lombok it make my code more readable and less boilerplate. And Play Framework is wonderful too. But there is a great trouble in case if you going to mixup them. Main reason is that scala temlates in play project compiled before domain classes. So Lombok, which itself is compiler's hack do not generate accessors for that time. The question is: if it any ways to make it work? I found some discussions in Google Groups, but they do not provide any reasonable solution. So have you got any success with it? And.. why guys from Play Framework project do not provide some Lombok-like solution? Anyway Play is full of code-generation magic and shadow compiling... so, why not?

• Setting a cell's format using Excel 2007 Interop and C#

  I'm using the office 2007 interop assemblies to create some excel spreadsheets. There are plenty of questions on here about getting started and MSDN contains heaps of articles, like this one. The API is funky, and sometimes a bit confusing. When I set a value of a cell, is there a way to set it's format? I'd like to mark particular fields as Date's so my customer can run excel macros on them. Also, numbers would be useful. Thanks!

• Why has Javascript been (mostly) only a browser-side technology for more than 10 years?

  Recently there is a lot of projects that pushes Javascript into other directions: as a general purpose scripting language (GLUEScript, Rhino), as an extension language (QTScript, Adobe Reader, OO Macros), Widgets (Yahoo Widgets, MS Gadgets, Dashboard), and even server-side JS & web frameworks (CommonJS, Helma, Phobos, V8cgi), which seems obvious since it is already a language widely used for web development. But wait, everything is so new and nothing is really mature. However JS is around for almost 15 years, being as powerfull as any other scripting languages, being standardised by the ECMA, and being a mandatory technology for web development. Why did it take so much time to gain acceptance into other domains than web browsers?

  I've got a business app in C#, with unit tests. Can I increase the reliability and cut down on my testing time and expense by using NModel or Spec Explorer? Alternately, if I were to rewrite it in F# (or even Haskell), what kinds (if any) of reliability increase might I see? Code Contracts? ASML? I realize this is subjective, and possibly argumentative, so please back up your answers with data, if possible. :) Or maybe an worked example, such as Eric Evans Cargo Shipping System? If we consider Unit tests to be pecific and strong theorems, checked quasi-statically on particular “interesting instances” and Types to be general but weak theorems (usually checked statically), and contracts to be general and strong theorems, checked dynamically for particular instances that occur during regular program operation (from B. Pierce's Types Considered Harmful, where do these other tools fit? We could pose the analogous question for Java, using Java PathFinder, Scala, etc.

I'd like to make the code more readable. I know I can declare my own, but are there no Windows macros for these values? • Adding barcodes to pdfs

  is there any way to do something like a mail merge, where the data (9-15 chars long) is converted to a barcode? im using trying to use openoffice's code128 for calc, but for some reason, every 10 strings, the barcode goes crazy, and the ascii tells me to register at the site where the extension came from, which i dont want to do i also found one for oodraw, but that requires the values to be inputted manually. since im not familiar with the macros, i can't write something that will do it automatically what im trying to do is: take an old pdf (only 1 page) covert it to word or picture or something add a function/macro/whatever to show a barcode (whether or not the barcode shows in this file, i dont care), given a string from excel data reconvert to separate pdfs or some other way that adds barcodes to pdfs all other free programs i have found do not do this nicely, and since im not really a pdf person, im not going to buy random programs. i just need this done for one large batch of data

  I've used VIM for many years as my primary text editor. And I am still learning how to use VIM for various editing tasks. The problem is that even if I learn something and use it once a week I forgot soon how I did it -- classic case is search and replace in many buffers using bufdo :(. I was wondering if there is any kata to daily VIM practice including many VIM commands: open existing files, create new files, edit files and move around: move cursor (beginning & end of line/function/block/screen, top & bottom of screen, move screen line up/down, etc.), mark, copy & paste, insert & remove characters/words/lines, move between buffers, move between windows, arrange windows, search & replace, repeat last command, formatting (=), probably some more (bookmarks, macros). save files, create/update/save an open projects (mksession and source). Do you know any kata for VIM of tutorial which could help to practice all above (and more) VIM commands?
