  • Options for installing software on Amazon EC2 Windows instances

    I've been running Linux servers on Amazon EC2 for a while now; the experience has been great. I've recently needed to bring up a Windows server to run some Windows-only software that our product needs to use, and am running into a problem figuring out how to install the software, which is only available on DVD. With Linux I can just install packages from a Web-based repository and take advantage of EC2's fast network throughput, but so far on the Windows instance I've had to upload my ISO images to EC2 and mount them from the Windows EC2 instance. For some reason I'm getting really slow upload speeds to EC2, even though the regular upload speed from our office is pretty good (around 7Mbps). I've also tried mounting the DVD drive on my machine as a local drive on the EC2 instance via Remote Desktop, and then running the software install from the local drive, but I run into the same slow upload speed issue. Does anyone have a better way to install software from physical media onto an EC2 instance ?

  • Master's in Software Engineering vs. Master's in Computer Science: which degree is preferred by empl

    I've been building software professionally for 7 years and am considering a master's degree. I understand the difference between these two degrees as simply: MSCS is the theory while MSE is the practice. I'm equally interested in both and would be happy with either, although I'm curious how these degrees rank in the eyes of a potential employer. I could see two views that a hiring manager could possibly take: a MSCS is loftier and has an implied knowledge of Software Engineering an MSE is more practical and has an implied knowledge of Computer Science In my own experience I've seen both MSCS degree holders than cannot program at all while others are among the best programmers I've met, so of course actual ability will depend on the individual. My question is about the "on paper" value of these two degrees when seeking a job. All things considered, is one degree more hirable, higher-paying than the other?

  • Selenium IDE and custom confirm() function conflict

    I am using simple modal dialog by Eric Martin. And have defined a function e.g function confirm(message, options) {.... } To customize all confirm dialogs. Its working nicely accross all the browsers.Except when I enable Selenium IDE ,my custom confirm dialog function fails to capture "options" parameters and firefox console echos like this: options is undefined callback=options.callback; Error When Selenium IDE is visible Normal Behaviour When Selenium IDE is closed Please help me sort out this issue so I should able to run selenium tests.

  • jquery media conflict with swfobject

    Hi, If I use jquery media plugin WITH swfobject 2.2 I get an 'unknown runtime error' in IE. It works fine in FF and other browsers. If i remove swfobject.js then the media works fine as it loads using simple object/embed tags. But I need to use swfobject as well (for other things). Has anybody come across this or a fix? A.

    When I use jquery ui autocomplete version 1.8.5 with jquery mobile alpha 2. I get an error when I click an item from the autocomplete list: $this.attr("href") is undefined.   • Coda Slider and Fancybox Conflict

    Hey there, i have some issues with Coda Slider and Fancybox. I use Fancybox to load an external Site within an Iframe and Coda Slider is for the Content Slider on the Startpage. If i have the jquery-easing Plugin called in my Head fpr the Coda Slider, the Fancybox doesn't work.     Lets say I have 2 extension methods to string, in 2 different namespaces: namespace test1 { public static class MyExtensions { public static int TestMethod(this String str) { return 1; } } } namespace test2 { public static class MyExtensions2 { public static int TestMethod(this String str) { return 2; } } } These methods are just for example, they don't really do anything. Now lets consider this piece of code: using System; using test1; using test2; namespace blah { public static class Blah { public Blah() { string a = "test"; int i = a.TestMethod(); //Which one is chosen ? } } } I know that only one of the extension methods will be chosen. Which one will it be ? and why ? How can I choose a certain method from a certain namespace ? Edit: Usually I'd use Namespace.ClassNAME.Method() ... But that just beats the whole idea of extension methods. And I don't think you can use Variable.Namespace.Method()

  • Software to automate website screenshot capture

    Do you know any software that can automate the process of getting screenshots of every page of a website? It would act like a spider/crawler/robot. You name it... For example: I developed a website and now I'd like to get a screenshot of every page of the site. I of course could do it manually (a lot of work). For each module of the site (Student, Payment, etc) I have different pages (Create, Edit, Details, Delete, etc) forms. The thing I'm looking for is a software that can visit every link of the site and then capture the screen - a software that can automate the whole process. It would also be good if the software allowed the user to pass a list of URLs to capture screenshots allowing even more fine grained configuration. EDIT: I tried Selenium mentioned by Aaron in his answer but I managed to find an app that does exactly what I needed. It's called Paparazzi!.     I need at least Java 1.6 to run a program that someone else in my lab wrote On the Java website it tells me to update Java via apple's software update function, i've run this a few times but it only got up to Java 1.5.0_24 and it now says no more updates are available for my computer Is there another way to update Java on a Mac? Is my operating system maybe to old for Java 1.6? i'm not sure what i'm running exactly, and i can't find a list of what mac operating systems run what versions of Java because the java site just suggests using Mac's software update.

  • How to get two seperate remote domain controllers with same IP to work?

    Hi, I have a VPN setup between multiple locations. Between each location and the central point (me), is a trust between our domain controllers. It all works great.. A new location wants to join, but their AD controller is using an IP address that is already in use by another AD in a separate location. Neither locations can change their IP addresses, but apparently there is a NAT rule that could be used to allow communication between each AD controller? The central site has a Cisco 5510 firewall which could perform the NAT, but I am unsure of the logic behind the NAT rule. Is anyone able to explain or help out? Thanks.

    I have two tables that link together through an id one is "submit_moderate" and one is "submit_post" The "submit_moderate" table looks like this id moderated_by post 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 4 Michael 60 Im using a simple query to get data from the "submit_post" table according to the "submit_moderate" table. $get_posts = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM submit_moderate WHERE moderated_by!='$user'"); $user is the person who is signed in. Now my problem is when I run this query, with the user 'Michael' it will retrieve this 1 James 60 2 Alice 32 3 Tim 18 Now technically this is correct however I don't want to retrieve the first row because 60 is associated with Michael as well as James. Basically I don't want to retrieve that value '60'. I know why this is happening however I can't figure out how to do this. I appreciate any hints or advice I can get.

I could follow all the steps, but the supposedly successfully published software does not appear on client/user machine's Add/Remove Programs. Could some help figure why this may not be working.     As far as I know in unix it's a good practice to always have blank line at the end of file - or to put it in other words: every line should end with \n. While checking my python code with PEP8 I noticed that it also states that there should be \n at end of file: W292 no newline at end of file JCR: The last line should have a newline. What's strange, it conflicts with W391: W391 blank line at end of file JCR: Trailing blank lines are superfluous. Okay: spam(1) W391: spam(1)\n How it should be? Should I have blank line at the end of file or not?

  • Display current layout WITHOUT using Windows's language bar

    Basically I love quick launch and pinning is not for me, I can't just pin 50 apps, nor pin them to start menu / use the win + type method. Anyway, Quick Launch works perfectly under Win7 IF you don't use the language bar. If you use it, sometimes (or always) it may fail to start/appear, you have to readd it. So my question is: Is there a tray app, a RainMeter way to show this? (First would be better). Thanks. (Best would be if I could switch layout globally but that train is gone. (Look at the changing global layout. Thank you Microsoft. (Irony included)).
