• SQL Server 2008 cluster freezing

  We have run into a strange situation in which a SQL Server 2008 single-node cluster hangs. As background, we are rebuilding a Windows Server 2003/SQL Server 2005 two-node cluster using Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008. Here's the timeline: Evicted the passive node (server B) from the Windows 2003/SQL 2005 cluster. The active node now functions as a single-node cluster with no problems. Wiped server B's disks and installed Windows 2008 and SQL Server 2008 as a single-node cluster. Since we do not want to the two clusters to communicate yet, we left the cluster's private network "heartbeat" adapter unconfigured. The cluster comes up and functions normally. Moved all databases to the new cluster. Cluster continues to function normally. Turned off server A (old cluster) in preparation for rebuilding as the second node of the new cluster. SQL Server instance on server B (new cluster) locks up, even though it should have no knowledge of or interaction with server A. Restarted server A. SQL Server instance on server B (new cluster) immediately begins working again. Things we have tried: The new cluster's name responds to ping and NETBIOS requests, even while the SQL Server is hung. We have confirmed that no IP address is assigned to the old heartbeat adapter, and it is not pulling an IP address from DHCP. Disabling the heartbeat's network card has the same effect. No errors were generated in any logs - Windows or SQL. When the error first occurred, it sat in the hung state for quite some time (well over 10 minutes) before anyone figured out what was going on. This would seem to eliminate any sort of normal cluster timeout in which it would have been searching for the other node (even if one had been configured). Server B is running Windows 2008 SP2, fully patched, and SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU7 (10.0.2775).

• How to use a local Leopard Server Mail server acting "like" an Exchange mail server

  We have a local Exchange 2003 server (company .local) who is collecting POP3 mail accounts on a distant (company .com) mailserver. The mails are collected by the Exchange server every 5-10 minutes and stored locally (on company .local), so the users can read them without going on the "real" mail server (company.com) What was explaned to me is that the mail collection is made with POP Now we are migrating on Snow Leopard Server. We have chosen to use a new extension for our local domain: .leo So our mailserver's FQDN is mail.company.leo, and the users have a user [email protected] formated mail address. A) All works fine except that I can't find how to tell the mail.company.leo that he must retreive the mails from the "real" public server (mail.company.com) I'm hoping to use IMAP and not POP. I can send mail using SMTP relay from mail.company.leo but (I know it's trivial) answering is not possible, even if I specify the reply-to as [email protected] (this seems to be related to A) ) I don't know if it's very complicated (I suspect not, but...) to achieve what I want to do, and I'm not a genius. But as I'm a little bit lost, I hopesomebody can or will help me. Solving this will allow us to use iCal invitations too, so a lot of services depends of these mailserver settings Some of you discuss the fact thta we choose to use a "new" tld with the .leo extension. We have no problem for that, we could use .local. no problem ;) We used .leo instead of .local just to differentiate the two systems (Exchange and SnowLeopardServer). The question was not about that, it was just to know if we can set a SnowLeopard mail server to act like an Exchange Server. • Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server - Change Printer Names on All Client Systems

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 print server set up hosting out multiple printers to my end users. I would like to change the naming convention for all of the printers hosted on the print server and want this change reflected on the client end. For example: I have a HP4000 printer named "Cottage" on the print server. I want to rename the printer "HR-1stFloor-220a" on the print server and I want this printer to appear on every client system with the new name. Simply renaming the printer on the server automatically creates a link from the old printer name to the new one, so all the clients work but the actual name, from their perspective, has not changed. Renaming the share name also does not visibly effect the end user (though it does update the port information). I would like to have the names of the printers be meaningful information regarding department and location, but this means that when they change hands or move I would need to update this information, and currently I am not seeing a way short of writing custom start-up scripts and remove/replacing them through AD. Is there a simple way of accomplishing this task? Thank you for your help.

• Migrate Domain from Server 2008 R2 to Small Business Server 2011

  I'm looking for some advice here, rather than the big how to do it I'm looking for what do to I have this home server, quad core and 4 GB of ram (I really can't afford more right now). With a Windows Serve 2008 R2 With ActiveDirectory and a Hyper-V-Virtual machine with SharePoint, TFS and a couple of more thigs. I have a least 10 remote users, all of them joined a Hamachi VPN (working great by the way). But I want to migrate that to a Small Business Server 2011 Standard. I tried to make a VM to join the domain and then promote that VM, back up it and then format the physical server, boot up the VM, Promote the Phisical and then erase the VM, but I can't do that because of SBS requiring a least 4 GB of ram to install (so I can't give all the 4 GB of physical ram to a VM). I was thinking in using a laptop (All the clients are laptop) as a temporal server, join the domain, promote it, then format the server and install SBS on the server and do all again. I really need some advice. Thanks in advance. BTW, I know that the software I'm using is kindda expensive, and I can't afford more hardware. I have access to MS downloads by a University partnership so I have all this software for free.

• Windows Home Server style redundancy/multi-disk-support on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  I'm setting up a fileserver for our department. It'll be connected to the domain. I want it to have a very large amount of storage (several TB). Ideally, it should also preserve disk space by identifying identical files and only storing them once. It should be fault tollerant so that if one of the drives fails, that drive can be replaced without losing any data. All of these features are available in Microsoft's consumer offering - Windows Home Server. However, I can't find these kind of features within the enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2. Am I missing something? I know that I could buy a Drobo, or similar, and use this instead. However, I would prefer to use a built-in feature of Windows Server should it exist. It seems surprising to me that these features should be available in Home Server but not in an enterprise fileserver.

• How SQL Server 2014 impacts Red Gate’s SQL Compare

  SQL Compare 10.7 successfully connects to SQL Server 2014, but it doesn’t yet cover the SQL Server 2014 features which would require us to make major changes to SQL Compare to support. In this post I’m going to talk about the SQL Server 2014 features we’ve already begun supporting, and which ones we’re working on for the next release of SQL Compare (v11). From SQL Compare’s perspective, the new memory-optimized table functionality (some might know it as ‘Hekaton’) has been the most important change. It can’t be described as its own object type, but the new functionality is split across two existing object types (three if you count indexes), as it also comes with native stored procedures and inline indexes. Along with connectivity support, the SQL Compare team has already implemented the first part of the puzzle – inline specification of indexes. These are essential for memory-optimized tables because it’s not possible to alter the memory optimized table’s structure, and so indexes can’t be added after the fact without dropping the table. Books Online  shows this in more detail in the table_index and column_index clauses of http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174979(v=sql.120).aspx. SQL Compare 10.7 currently supports reading the new inline index specification from script folders and source control repositories, and will write out inline indexes where it’s necessary to do so (i.e. in UDDTs or when attempting to write projects compatible with the SSDT database project format). However, memory-optimized tables themselves are not yet supported in 10.7. The team is actively working on making them available in the v11 release with full support later in the year, and in a beta version before that. Fortunately, SQL Compare already has some ways of handling tables that have to be dropped and created rather than altered, which are being adapted to handle this new kind of table. Because it’s one of the largest new database engine features, there’s an equally large Books Online section on memory-optimized tables, but for us the most important parts of the documentation are the normal table features that are changed or unsupported and the new syntax found in the T-SQL reference pages. We are treating SQL Compare’s support of Natively Compiled Stored Procedures as a separate unit of work, which will be available in a subsequent beta and also feed into the v11 release. This new type of stored procedure is designed to work with memory-optimized tables to maintain the performance improvements gained by them – but you can still also access memory-optimized tables from normal stored procedures and ad-hoc queries. To us, they’re essentially a limited-syntax stored procedure with a few extra options in the create statement, embodied in the updated CREATE PROCEDURE documentation and with the detailed limitations. They should be easier to handle than memory-optimized tables simply because the handling of stored procedures is less sensitive to dropping the object than the handling of tables. However, both share an incompatibility with DDL triggers and Event Notifications which mean we’ll need to temporarily disable these during the specific deployment operations that involve them – don’t worry, we’ll supply a warning if this is the case so that you can check your auditing arrangements can handle the situation. There are also a handful of other improvements in SQL Server 2014 which affect SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare that are not connected to memory optimized tables. The largest of these are the improvements to columnstore indexes, with the capability to create clustered columnstore indexes and update columnstore tables through them – for more detail, take a look at the new syntax reference. There’s also a new index option for better compression of columnstores (COLUMNSTORE_ARCHIVE) and a new statistics option for incremental per-partition statistics, plus the 90 compatibility level is being retired. We’re planning to finish up these small clean-up features last, and be ready to release SQL Compare 11 with full SQL 2014 support early in Q3 this year. For a more thorough overview of what’s new in SQL Server 2014, Books Online’s What’s New section is a good place to start (although almost all the changes in this version are in the Database Engine).

The application's DAL opens a connection, reads or saves data, and closes it. No connections are ever left open - intentionally! There is nothing obvious on the Windows 2000 Server hosting the SQL Server 2000 that would indicate a problem. Nothing in the Event Logs and nothing in the SQL Server logs. The timeouts happen randomly - I cannot reproduce. It happens early in the day with only 1 to 5 users in the system. It also happens with around 50 users in the system. The most connections to SQL Server via Performance Monitor, for all databases, has been about 74. The timeouts happen in code that both saves to, and reads from, the database in different parts of the application. The stack trace does not point to one or two offending DAL functions. It's happened in many different places. Does my ADO.NET code appear to be able to leak connections? I've goolged around a bit, and I've read that if the connection pool fills up, this can happen. However, I'm not explicitly setting any connection pooling. I've even tried to increase the Connection Timeout in the connection string, but timeouts happen long before the 300 second (5 minute) value: <add name="MyConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=MyServer;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;Integrated Security=SSPI;Connection Timeout=300;"/> I'm at a total loss already as to what is causing these Timeout issues. Any ideas are appreciated.

  I recall that the import tool in sql server 2000 would copy indexes, relationships, etc. In sql server 2005/2008 the import tool in SSMS will only create the tables, copy the data, but the keys, indexes, relationships are missing. I can find no option in the import wizard to enable this? What am I missing here? Is this not possible anymore for any good reason?

  Here's the Scenario: We have an existing SQL 2000 Server that has a linked server to a share directory (on another server) containing Visual FoxPro tables; all connections work correctly. Porting the SQL 2000 server to a new SQL 2005 server results in questionable behavior: If you connect to the server, remotely, using Windows Authentication, you receive this error when running a query against the linked server: OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "[linked server name]" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Visual FoxPro Driver]File 'MyTable.dbf' does not exist.". Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 2 Cannot get the column information from OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "[linked server name]". However, logged in locally, the query works fine. The query also works correctly when logged in remotely, but using a SQL login. The only scenario I receive the error is when connected remotely, using windows authentication. As I mentioned before, this works on the SQL 2000 server, and both the old and new servers are running under the same network account (which has access to the folder the FoxPro files are in). Doing a little searching on the internet it looks like others have run into this situation, but I haven't found a resolution. Has anyone run into this before?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 - Cannot create database snapshot

  Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 X64 Enterprise SQL: SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise X64 I have a default SQL Server instance, the SQL Server service account is running as a domain user. I am trying to create a database snapshot in the directory where the mdf files are stored. The T-SQL syntax is correct. The file system is NTFS. The error message I get is: Msg 1823, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 A database snapshot cannot be created because it failed to start. Msg 5119, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot make the file "e:\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDB.ss" a sparse file. Make sure the file system supports sparse files. The local SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER group has Full Control permission on the folder where I am trying to create the snapshot. I can fix the problem in two ways, neither of which are suitable. Add the SQL Server service (domain) account to the local Administrators group and restart the SQL service. Grant the local SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER group Full control on E:\ I have tried to change the owner of the DATA directory to SQLServerMSSQLUser$db$MSSQLSERVER to no avail. I have no issue creating a new database Why can I not create a snapshot by giving permission only on the DATA folder? Update 23/09/2010: I have tried mrdenny's suggestion with no luck (but learned something new in the process), I suspect the problem may be due to the fact that the domain is a windows 2000 domain running in mixed mode. I had to install hotfix KB976494 for Server 2008 R2, as the SQL Server 2008 R2 installer would not verify the service account correctly with the domain. I noticed that Server 2000 isn't a supported operating system for SQL 2008 R2 but cannot find anything that would suggest it shouldn't work in a 2000 domain. I dis-joined the test server from the domain and changed the service accounts to the local service account and I still have the same issue. I will try to re-install the server without joining the domain and without the hotfix and see if the issue persists.

  An external consult wrote a guide on how to copy a database. Step two was detach the database using Sql Server Manager. After the detach the database was not visible in the SQL Server Manager... Not much to do but write a mail to the service provider asking to have the database attached again. The service porviders answer: Not posisble to attach again since the SQL Server security has been violated". Rolling back to last backup is not the option I want to use. Can any one give feedback if this seems logic and reasonable to assume that a detached database in a SQL Server 2008 accessed through SQL Server Manager cannot be reattached. It was done by rightclicking the database and choosing detach. -- update -- Based on the comments below I update the question with the server setup. There are two dedicated servers: srv1: Web server with remote desktop and an Sql Server Manager srv2: Sql server that can be accessed through the Sql Server Manager on the web server -- update2 -- After a restart of the server the DBA could suddenly do the attachment of the database. And I guess that after the restart it was a simple task. So all of your answer were rigth! It seems that I can only mark one as a correct answer so I marked the first answer correct. • Performance problem with Win Server 2008 at vbox on Ubuntu 9.10 Server

  Hey, i´ve got an Ubuntu 9.10 Server and tried to install Windows Server 2008 in a virtual machine. The Problem is, the Server has got 8 cores, but the virtual machine seems to have problems with that. The VM is very slow and not really usable if i set the VM-config to more than one core. Is it set to only one core everything works fine, but thats not a solution because I bought the Server with several cores for a reason... Does anybody know this problem or has got a solution? I feel like I read the entire internet via Google... no solution found. Greetz Diskilla P.S.: I´m from Germany and it´s kind of hard to ask in english :-) I hope I din´t make that much mistakes.

Question Can I have an AD administration graphical user interface to manage Active Directory on Server Core machine? I would really like to have it, because I'm not so keen to do stuff using power-shell, because I've never managed AD as well, so a GUI would be much more helpful, because I could at least visualize it a bit better and maybe understand AD structures. Note: I'm setting up development environment machine as well and installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 on in so it would use this AD machine.

  As we have some PC's still running Windows 2000 and this is beyond our control we use IE 6 so we can keep the IE platform standard. Recently on some XP and Win2000 PCs IE has been crashing with the Encountered a Problem and Needs to close do you want to send a message to Microsoft error when entering some sites. This happens even after a format reinstall with minimal software load (Office 2000, some avaya software, kaspersky, tapiex.dll). The module pointed to in the error report is ntl.dll. There are lots of reports over the net of the problem but has anyone resolved this issue? (Latest IE6 updates are installed). Also please note there were no 3rd party IE addons, spyware, viruses or adware Hope someone can help.

• Memory Usage of SQL Server

  SQL Server instance on my server is using almost full memory available in my Physical Server. Say if i am having 8GB of RAM than SQL Server is using 7.8 GB of RAM from system. I also have read articles and also read many similar questions regarding same on this forum and i understand that memory is reserved and it is using memory. But i have 2 same servers and 2 SQL Servers, why this is happening on a single SQL Instance not on other. Also when i run DBCC MemoryStatus than it is showing up... VM Reserved 8282008 VM Committed 537936 so from this we know that SQL reserved whole 8GB memory, but why this VM Committed keeps increasing. What i understand is VM Committed is: VM Committed: This value shows the overall amount of VAS that SQL Server has committed. VAS that is committed has been associated with physical memory. So this is the memory SQL Server has committed (from this i understand that physical memory actually SQL Server is using at instance). So like to know the reason behind this ever increasing VM Committed memory on my server and not on another. Thanks in Advance.

So i tried to connect to SQL Server via visual studios IDE and had no luck. I enabled TCP and named pipes and restarted the service (and computer) with still no luck. I remembered about mdf files so i made that after an obstacle of not being able to make the connect string require i figure out visual studio has it in its properties and successfully connected with that. Then i had a problem with nested transactions. After not being able to figure out how to check i wondered if i can configure it to allow it somehow. I always thought all of MS were the same except for limitations but sql server seems to support nested transactions so theres no point trying to work around the problem with .mdf files since i wont need them and really just used it to port the base of my sql code and to check if syntax is correct. I tried installing SQL Server Management Studio since people mentioned it several times (as a solution or at least help). When installing it on windows 7 it says it may not be compatible. After running it, it launched SQL Server Installation Center (64-bit) which doesnt seem to be the same thing as i dont see a way to modify any of my server (networking) configurations or edit user permissions, etc. I am clueless what to do next. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm posting here bc i think my problem is more configurations and sql server then programming.
