• Windows 8 + Ubuntu dualboot problem - ubuntu does not load after windows updates

  I have installed Windows 8 64-bit and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit in dualboot with EFI mode. Everything worked great. I could run Ubuntu or Windows without any problems. Only one little issue was that Windows locked NTFS partitions when I shut it down. When I clicked on restart button in Windows and started Ubuntu, partitions mounted successfully. But today ... I opened windows and downloaded all available updates. When I wanted to come back to Ubuntu I noticed that grub did not count down seconds to automatic start. After choosing Ubuntu option manually, the OS did not load. Just black screen with white underscore in the upper left corner. Windows is accessible always without such issues. Last time I solved it by reinstalling ubuntu but I dont want to do it each time windows downloads some updates. Have you ever meet such problem, or do you know how to solve it? EDIT Ubuntu boots, but it won't start. It ends on loading screen.

• Backing up Hyper-V VMs using "wbadmin" failing on Windows Server 2012

  I'm trying to backup a single VM using "wbdamin". I'm using this command-line: wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:d: -hyperv:VM_Machine_Name -quiet But the backup have no success. Looking at my Events, I get the following information: Source: SSP Event ID: 16387 Level: Error "Writer Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer experienced some error during snapshot creation. More info: ." ============================= Source: Backup Event ID: 521 Level: Error "The backup operation that started at '?2014?-?06?-?11T15:38:44.459000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x8100010C'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved." ============================= Source: VSS No Event Errors. I didn't find any info about "0x8100010C" error code through the web and I'm stuck. Anyone know how to fix this?

• Google Chrome freezing when I open Bookmark Manager

  I have an issue with Google Chrome freezing whenever I open the Bookmark Manager. Only that particular tab freezes, and I can still use the other tabs. No bookmarks appear, and I cannot type in the 'Search bookmarks' field. This seems to be related with my logged in profile. If I change profile, it allows me to login. I've also tried to login with my profile on different computers using Chrome, and it also freezes. However, I can still add bookmarks from the bookmarks tab. I just cannot use the Bookmark Manager. Any ideas what I can do? Is it possible to somehow export my bookmarks, reset the profile bookmarks (without losing other information like extensions etc), and re-import them?

• Stop external USB keyboard repeating key presses on Vista.

  We have an infuriating problem with a (Vista/Dell) laptop. When an external (Logitech) USB keyboard is attached to it, it regularly starts repeating key presses. When the user recently deleted an Outlook message, it deleted them all! When typing a message, suddenly it will start repeating the last keypress about 30 times (it varies). It's not a mechanical issue. We've switched the keyboard out four times. Even tried a brand new one one. Every time it's the same. Also, the keyboard works fine on other machines. The problem doesn't arise when the laptop's own keyboard is used - even if the external USB keyboard is still attached. I'm stumped? Any ideas. Not using an external keyboard isn't an option due to our health and safety policy (...don't ask...).

• Konqueror on Windows XP : protocol not supported - man

  Hello everyone: I am new to the KDE and I am working all the time in a Windows XP environment. So I installed the KDE's Konqueror browser onto my laptop. The only reason for that is to allow me issue man:ls in the browser address bar and to get the man page displayed into the browser rather than printed inside the terminal. The problem is, I then get the error prompt saying that: protocol not supported man I guess something is wrong in the configuration, how to fix this problem? Many thanks in advance. The problem is definitely not the Konqueror browser, but is between the keyboard and the screen...

• GNU screen configuration for optimal keycode recognition

  Currently GNU screen will botch up certain keystrokes, for example CTRL pressed in combination with the arrow keys, so that eg when in vim insert mode, CTRL-PGUp will Uppercase the next/current word (or something like that). I'd like for it to work pretty much transparently, so that the functionality is the same as when it's not running (with the obvious exception of CTRL-a control sequences)... is this possible? Also — and I suspect this is more or less a separate issue — I'd like for the scrollwheel to scroll back in the session log rather than cycling through the history as it does now. Doable? Or perhaps it could be set to emulate a much larger screen size that the terminal app that it's running under could keep that text in its session log. either way the goal would be to be able to use the mouse wheel and/or shift-up-arrow to scroll back in the session log.

• Can I repair a short circuiting problem in a Dell Inspiron 6000 that occurs when it is picked up?

  I have a couple of Dell Inspiron 6000 notebooks that work perfectly fine unless you pick them up by one corner (as most people would). When you lift the notebook it flexes slightly and the notebook shorts out. Sometimes even a gentle bump will cause this to happen. So far the notebook always starts back up without issue, but this behavior is...inconvenient. It occurred to me that someone familiar with the innards might be able to suggest a little MacGyver fix for this. A little electrical tape in the right spot or something like that. Or perhaps this is a common problem and the answer is here, waiting for me to stumble on the correct keywords. I would appreciate any suggestions Note: It is probably worth mentioning that I have disassembled a Dell notebook before to replace a bluetooth card so I comfortable opening up the systems.

• How to work around a possible XNA Game Studio or Windows Phone SDK install failure on Windows 8

  I am not sure if you guys know Aaron Stebner. Aaron works at Microsoft, and has pulled thorns from my side many many times already. His blog is at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner and it is a gold mine of tips and tricks to debug and solve many cryptic issues happening during installation and removal of programs. For example, Aaron taught me how to remove programs that do not appear in the Programs and Features list, amongst many other things. The last nugget I used from Aaron’s blog saved my butt just before a presentation where I had to run both Visual Studio 10 with the Windows Phone SDK, and Visual Studio 11 for WinRT development. Of course this had to be on Windows 8. Unfortunately when you install the Windows Phone SDK on Windows 8, you may (or may not, I saw both scenarios) encounter an issue with XNA, and the installation fails. Unfortunately, even if you don’t use XNA in your apps, this will prevent even normal Windows Phone app development. Fortunately, Aaron has a fix for that. • Why my pendrive is showing used space when it is actually empty?

  I recently got some virus in my pendrive. I removed them using Microsoft security Essential and cleared all data. But it is showing that 47.1MB of space is being used. Is it due to the virus affect? There is no hidden files on the pendrive and I have also set Show hidden files in the Folder and search option. Permission is also granted to everyone. I also use disk management to check any issue but nothing found. I think formatting will solve the the problem but in that case I will not be able to see the data. Is there any command to see the files in cmd or any other way?

• How to check if a cdrom is in the tray remotely (via ssh)?

  I have a server running Ubuntu 10.04 (it's on the other side of the world and I haven't built up the wherewithal to upgrade it remotely yet) and I have been told that there is a CD in one of it's two CD drives. I want to rip an image of the cd and then download it to my local computer (I don't need help with either of these steps). However, I cannot seem to confirm whether or not there actually is a CD in the drive as I was told. It did not automatically mount anywhere (which I'm thinking might just be a result of it being a headless server not running X, nautilus, or any of the other nice user friendly things). • Print driver installs failing

  All of the Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise machines in my organization are failing to install a good number of printer drivers that previously installed without issue. This only happens with printer drivers. And not with all printer drivers. Just some. Network drivers, video drivers, etc. have had no problems. The error that appears in Device Manager is "The driver cannot be installed because it is either not digitally signed or not signed in the appropriate manner." It appears to be signed fine though. It has an accompanying .CAT file and worked previously. Likewise, I removed a machine from the domain, manually set all of the domain Group Policy settings in gpedit.msc, and tried that way, and it worked fine. So it seems like the Group Policy settings are irrelevant. What other domain-related issue could be causing this though? Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. • Name Servers changed over 48 hrs ago and site is still down

  Ok, I just recently changed Name Servers for my site (Oct. 29th): http://dream-portal.net but there is an issue, the name servers were changed from godaddy, however, the DNS is being hosted elsewhere. Godaddy states that the DNS is resolving the site to www.dream-portal.net and that is making it inaccessible from the DNS on the other host and that they can't do anything because I'm not hosting DNS with godaddy. I've contacted the other host and they say that everything is fine, however, people are not able to access the site and I can't access it from my work computer. I can only access it from my home computer. From my work computer it says that the page can not be found. What should I do? What can I do?   I'm having an issue with our NSMExpress box. I'm trying to manage all our devices, range from ns5gt to ssg320m, and some of those devices have addresses assigned by dhcp from the ISP (like pppoe or dsl). The addresses are actually static but we have the register the MAC address in order to get this address. I can actually add the device in NSM except the IP that's on the untrust side isn't imported in as it's dynamic. Because of this I cannot change many options that pertian to the untrust interface as there is no IP. I've talked to JTAC on this and they didn't know if there was a way to do this or not but then they stated that Tim Hortons does this so I'm confused on how to get this working. Maybe i'm just missing something as I imagine that other people must be doing this as well. Any assistance is appreciated! Furthermore when I import a device this is the message I get: Warnings: Interface ethernet0/0 is a pppoe/dhcp/pppoa client and its ip is NOT IMPORTED because it may be dynamic.

• Failures when copying between two external drives on the same controller

  I'm encountering a weird problem which is present both on Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04, on two different machines. When trying to copy between two external drives connected to the same USB controller, the transfer will randomly hang at some random time (after copying 300MB, 1GB, 10GB - it doesn't appear to depend on the dataset being copied). The hang appears to happen faster in 10.04. It appears to happen slower if both drives are connected to a hub. If the drives are connected to 2 distinct physical ports on the machine, the hang will be very fast. Hangs cannot be reproduced if: Data is copied from the first external drive to an internal drive, then to the second external drive Drives are connected to different USB controllers, for example the first one is connected to the built-in controller and the second one via an external PCMCIA controller. lspci says the first machine has an Intel ICH9 USB controller, the second an Intel ICH4. Is this a hardware problem, a kernel problem or a software issue? I used Nautilus when copying the files.

• wubi dual-boot installation of ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 fails to boot

  I am trying to use the wubi installation process to create a Ubuntu 12.04 / Windows 7 dual boot setup on my Windows 7 machine (Dell Inspiron 17R). The installation initially works fine, and I am able to load Ubuntu several times after selecting it from the boot menu. However, when I boot into Windows 7 it seems to corrupt the Ubuntu boot process, because after running Windows 7, Ubuntu won't boot on the machine. It is still listed as an option in the boot menu, but when it is selected, the machine does one of the following: -hangs at the load-screen and says that Ubuntu is preparing to run for the first time (although it isn't the first time the OS has been loaded) -hangs with a black screen and does nothing I have uninstalled Ubuntu and then reinstalled it (using wubi) three times. Each time Ubuntu initially boots okay (including rebooting the laptop into Ubuntu several times.) However, whenever I switch over and boot into Windows 7 it breaks the Ubuntu installation. Windows 7 continues to boot and work fine without issues. I have successfully installed Ubuntu using wubi onto a different Windows 7 machine before without problems...it seems that there is something different about this laptop configuration. I am not sure how to debug the issue. I see no error messages during the Ubuntu boot process when it hangs and am not sure how to debug this.

CNAME 54.251.35.112 Apache httpd.conf: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/connect.goneglobal.com ServerName connect.goneglobal.com </VirtualHost> restart httpd - this ip is registered to this server - works for other sites on this apache. (first time I've tried a subdomain). Appears the issue is with DNS potentially and it doesn't seem to get to the site. Note: I have an index.php in the Documentroot. Note: there is an A record for goneglobal.com. which goes to a different hosting provider. thx

• Drive configuration for 5 large databases

  I've got 5 databases, each 300GB, currently on a RAID 5 array consisting of 5 drives. All the databases are used heavily, at the same time, so drive speed is an issue. Would I see better performance if I got rid of the RAID 5 configuration and just put each database on a separate drive? The redundancy provided by RAID 5 is not necessary due to mirroring elsewhere. Will the server then be able to perform reads / writes to different databases drives in parallel? More so at least than when it's in RAID? This is all on Windows 2003 / SQL 2008.

  Our Intranet page has stopped working on some machines/some user accounts. The error I am getting points to a DNS issue but If I ping the site from the command line the it responds fine. The error I'm gettting on IE is Error: The web filter could not find the address for the requested site Why are you seeing this: The system is unable too determine the IP address of intranet.example.com I'm not quite sure why it mentions the web filter as there is a proxy exception for the intranet page and if I run a trace route it doesn't go via the web proxy (filtering system). Finally it isn't affecting everyone, just random users, also it doesn't affect the random users on all the client machines they use. I have one user where it happens on any client they log onto where most its just certian clients. It's even "fixed" itself for a few peoples. EDIT: hey Mikey thanks for the fast response. Proxies are correct and automatic configuration is off (both via GPO)

• issues changing default version when updating Python on Mac

  I have a MacBook that came with Python 2.5 installed. I need use a newer version, so I downloaded 3.1 and installed it, then ran the "Update Profile Script" that came with it, which is supposed to change the default version of Python to the one I downloaded. It appeared to run fine and said process completed, but it didn't work. When I type "python" into the terminal it displays version 2.5, and I still can't install pygame, which requires at least Python 2.6. When I do vi .profile I get this: export PATH=.:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH export MANPATH=/opt/local/man:$MANPATH Setting PATH for Python 3.1 The orginal version is saved in .profile.pysave PATH="/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin:${PATH}" export PATH ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ".profile" 6L, 251C So it looks like the script did do something, but I don't know enough bash script to understand what.
