  • Language-independent sources on 2D collision detection [on hold]

    While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some 2D collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing 2D collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on 2D collision detection? I'd prefer it if it kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on 2D collision detection'?

  • Sharing between new install and Windows 7 boxes not working, either direction. Printers & folders

    I don't seem to be able to share between my Ubuntu (fresh install) and any of my Windows machines. I tried using this guide: How to Share Folders in Ubuntu & Access them from Windows 7. The problems is that I cannot see the Ubuntu machine in my network pane on the Windows machine. Any Ideas of what I should check? Ultimately what I am looking to do is make mobile media server that I can put in the Van, attach a WiFi router, and stream to an iPad, tablet, laptop, etc. Any advice on setting this up would be appreciated.

    I read, that the Hull Shader, Domain Shader, Geometry Shader and Pixel Shader can be used optional. So, is the Vertex Shader optional too? If no: What does a basic Vertex Shader look like? Just like a simple pass through? Is the Vertex Shader necessary to tell what kind of datastructure (Van Stripes or Meshes) are used? What can I do, with just the vertex shader? Are the fixed functions working without any help of programming a programmable stage?

    When I did my undergraduate studies in elecrical engineering, there was this book called "Basic Electricity" by Van Valkenburgh. If you read that book cover to cover, your fundamentals in electrical engineering would be bulletproof. I would recommend it all my juniors and I absolutely loved it. Is there such a book in the field of computer science? I am not so concerned about the algorithms. I am looking more into something that tells me how does everything work beneath the covers. TCPIP, memory management, DNS, routing, SSL, buffer, queuing etc.

Close everything and reboot. Plug the Ethernet cable into both computers.     Hi, I'm trying to keep my xsl DRY and as a result I wanted to call the same template for 2 sections of an XML document which happen to be the same complex type (ContactDetails and AltContactDetails). The question is as follows: Question: Are the statistics sampled by default? Answer: Yes. The sampling rate can be specified by the user and it can be anywhere between a very low value to 100%. Let us do a small experiment to verify if the auto update on statistics is left on. Also, let’s examine a very large table that is created and statistics by default- whether the statistics are sampled or not. Test 1: Total Rows: 1000000, Rows Sampled: 255420, Size of the Table: 35.516 MB Test 2: Total Rows: 100000, Rows Sampled: 100000, Size of the Table: 3.555 MB The reason behind the sample in the Test1 is that the data space is larger than 8 MB, and therefore it uses more than 1024 data pages. If the data space is smaller than 8 MB and uses less than 1024 data pages, then the sampling does not happen. Sampling aids in reducing excessive data scan; however, sometimes it reduces the accuracy of the data as well. Please note that this is just a sample test and there is no way it can be claimed as a benchmark test. The result can be dissimilar on different machines. I am running this test on SQL Server 2008 R2. Here is the quick scenario about my setup. Create Table Insert 1000 Records Check the Statistics Now insert 10 times more 10,000 indexes Check the Statistics – it will be NOT updated Note: Auto Update Statistics and Auto Create Statistics for database is TRUE Expected Result – Statistics should be updated – SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update Now the question is why the statistics are not updated? The common answer is – we can update the statistics ourselves using UPDATE STATISTICS TableName WITH FULLSCAN, ALL However, the solution I am looking is where statistics should be updated automatically based on algorithm mentioned here.     "Standards save money." "Standards accelerate projects." "Standards make better solutions."   What do these statements mean to you? You buy technology solutions like Oracle Applications but you're a business person--trying to close the quarter, get performance reviews processed, negotiate a new sourcing contract, etc.   When "standards" come up in presentations and discussions do you: -          Nod your head politely -          Tune out and check your smart phone -          Turn to your IT counterpart and say "Bob's all over this standards thing, right Bob?"   Here's why standards matter. My wife wants new external doors downstairs, ones that would get more light into the rooms. Am I OK with that? "Uhh, sure...it's a little dark in the kitchen."   -          24 hours ago - wife calls to tell me that she's going to the hardware store and may look at doors -          20 hours ago - wife pulls into driveway, informs me that two doors are in the back of her station wagon, ready for me to carry -          19 hours ago - I re-discovered the fact that it's not fun to carry a solid wood door by myself -          5 hours ago - Local handyman, who was at our house anyway, tells me that the doors we bought will likely cost 2-3x the material cost in installation time and labor...the doors are standard but our doorways aren't   We could have done more research. I could be more handy. Sure. But the fact is, my 1951 house wasn't built with me in mind. They built what worked and called it a day.   The same holds true with a lot of business applications. They were designed and architected for one-time use with one use-case in mind. Today's business climate is different. If you're going to use your processes and technology to differentiate your business you should have at least a working knowledge of: -          How standards can benefit your business -          Your IT organization's philosophy around standards -          Your vendor's track-record around standards...and watch for those who pay lip-service to standards but don't follow through   The rallying cry in most IT organizations today is "learn more about the business, drop the acronyms." I'm not advocating that you go out and learn how to code in Java. But I do believe it will help your business and your decision-making process if you meet IT ½...even ¼ of the way there.   Epilogue: The door project has been put on hold and yours truly has to return the doors to the hardware store tomorrow.

  • Do your filesystems have un-owned files ?

    As part of our work for integrated compliance reporting in Solaris we plan to provide a check for determining if the system has "un-owned files", ie those which are owned by a uid that does not exist in our configured nameservice.  Tests such as this already exist in the Solaris CIS Benchmark (9.24 Find Un-owned Files and Directories) and other security benchmarks. The obvious method of doing this would be using find(1) with the -nouser flag.  However that requires we bring into memory the metadata for every single file and directory in every local file system we have mounted.  That is probaby not an acceptable thing to do on a production system that has a large amount of storage and it is potentially going to take a long time. Just as I went to bed last night an idea for a much faster way of listing file systems that have un-owned files came to me. I've now implemented it and I'm happy to report it works very well and peforms many orders of magnatude better than using find(1) ever will.   ZFS (since pool version 15) has per user space accounting and quotas.  We can report very quickly and without actually reading any files at all how much space any given user id is using on a ZFS filesystem.  Using that information we can implement a check to very quickly list which filesystems contain un-owned files. First a few caveats because the output data won't be exactly the same as what you get with find but it answers the same basic question.  This only works for ZFS and it will only tell you which filesystems have files owned by unknown users not the actual files.  If you really want to know what the files are (ie to give them an owner) you still have to run find(1).  However it has the huge advantage that it doesn't use find(1) so it won't be dragging the metadata for every single file and directory on the system into memory. It also has the advantage that it can check filesystems that are not mounted currently (which find(1) can't do).   • Why doesn't Python require exactly four spaces per indentation level?

    Whitespace is signification in Python in that code blocks are defined by their indentation. Furthermore, Guido van Rossum recommends using four spaces per indentation level (see PEP 8: Style Guide for Python Code). What was the reasoning behind not requiring exactly four spaces per indentation level as well? Are there any technical reasons? It seems like all the arguments that can be made for making whitespace define code blocks can also be used to argument for setting an exact whitespace length for one indentation level (say four spaces).

After some quick research I saw there was an interesting library called 'wxi' (based on Fudgets of Haskell) which uses a different approach on GUI's. No central loop, every widget processes it's own events and handles it's own data. What do you guys think about this? I can't find any method or property in pshost that returns the exit code. This engine I have needs to ensure that script executes correctly. Any help would be appreciated. regards Bob. It implements a callback into the host, specifically a custom PSHost object, enabling you to return the $lastexitcode. Using point 4, calling $host.SetShouldExit(1) returns 1 to the SetShouldExit method of pshost, as described here. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.management.automation.host.pshost.setshouldexit(VS.85).aspx Its really depends on defining your own exit code defintion. 0 and 1 suffixes I guess. regards Bob.

    I am trying to pull together some data for a report and need to concatenate the row values of one of the tables. Here is the basic table structure: Reviews ReviewID ReviewDate Reviewers ReviewerID ReviewID UserID Users UserID FName LName This is a M:M relationship. Each Review can have many Reviewers; each User can be associated with many Reviews. Basically, all I want to see is Reviews.ReviewID, Reviews.ReviewDate, and a concatenated string of the FName's of all the associated Users for that Review (comma delimited). Instead of: ReviewID---ReviewDate---User 1----------12/1/2009----Bob 1----------12/1/2009----Joe 1----------12/1/2009----Frank 2----------12/9/2009----Sue 2----------12/9/2009----Alice Display this: ReviewID---ReviewDate----Users 1----------12/1/2009-----Bob, Joe, Frank 2----------12/9/2009-----Sue, Alice I have found this article describing some ways to do this, but most of these seem to only deal with one table, not multiple; unfortunately, my SQL-fu is not strong enough to adapt these to my circumstances. I am particularly interested in the example on that site which utilizes FOR XML PATH() as that looks the cleanest and most straight forward. SELECT p1.CategoryId, ( SELECT ProductName + ', ' FROM Northwind.dbo.Products p2 WHERE p2.CategoryId = p1.CategoryId ORDER BY ProductName FOR XML PATH('') ) AS Products FROM Northwind.dbo.Products p1 GROUP BY CategoryId; Can anyone give me a hand with this?   • Spring Security HTTP Basic Authentication

    Hi people! I am trying to do a really simple basic authentication with Spring Security. I have configured properly the namespace, and there are no Exceptions in the server. In my "servlet.xml" I have got the next for Spring Security: <security:http> <security:http-basic></security:http-basic> <security:intercept-url method="POST" pattern="/**" access="ROLE_USER" /> </security:http> <security:authentication-manager alias="authenticationManager"> <security:authentication-provider> <security:user-service> <security:user name="cucu" password="tas" authorities="ROLE_USER" /> <security:user name="bob" password="bobspassword" authorities="ROLE_USER" /> </security:user-service> </security:authentication-provider> </security:authentication-manager> It nearly all goes perfect: the methods that are not POST doesn't prompt any login form, and the POST method prompt it. The problem is, that nor "cucu", neither "bob" can login there. Can anyone see what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! ;-)
