• Can't mount cd/dvd r/w drive in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and I'm having some troubles mounting my drive or getting it to detect media. When I do this: dmesg | grep "sr0" I get : [ 2.096797] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray [ 2.096968] sr 5:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 when I: sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0 sudo mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0 There is most certainly media in the drive. Can someone please help me understand how I can resolve this issue?

GParted shows the following partitions (but Nautilus doesn't): **/dev/sda1 - file system: Unknown - 128Mb - flags: msftres** (this one shows *"Warning: Unable to detect file system! • Ubunt doesn't mount one of my NTFS disks

  There is a mountable /dev/sda NTFS formatted (Windows disk) There is no /dev/sdb when I ls /dev (NTFS Data disk) There is a /dev/sdc which is another disk of the same model, (Ubuntu disk) I can see that Ubuntu detected this unmountable disk in the Disk Utility It states incorrectly it is unpartioned and a RAID volume. (it previously was RAID0 setup with /dev/sdc but now it is a simple volume, no RAID whatsoever) When I boot Windows 7, it uses this unmountable disk without a glitch The problem happens in both IDE and AHCI modes Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

• How can you tell whether to use Composite Pattern or a Tree Structure, or a third implementation?

  I have two client types, an "Observer"-type and a "Subject"-type. They're both associated with a hierarchy of groups. The Observer will receive (calendar) data from the groups it is associated with throughout the different hierarchies. This data is calculated by combining data from 'parent' groups of the group trying to collect data (each group can have only one parent). The Subject will be able to create the data (that the Observers will receive) in the groups they're associated with. When data is created in a group, all 'children' of the group will have the data as well, and they will be able to make their own version of a specific area of the data, but still linked to the original data created (in my specific implementation, the original data will contain time-period(s) and headline, while the subgroups specify the rest of the data for the receivers directly linked to their respective groups). However, when the Subject creates data, it has to check if all affected Observers have any data that conflicts with this, which means a huge recursive function, as far as I can understand. So I think this can be summed up to the fact that I need to be able to have a hierarchy that you can go up and down in, and some places be able to treat them as a whole (recursion, basically). Also, I'm not just aiming at a solution that works. I'm hoping to find a solution that is relatively easy to understand (architecture-wise at least) and also flexible enough to be able to easily receive additional functionality in the future. Is there a design pattern, or a good practice to go by, to solve this problem or similar hierarchy problems? EDIT: Here's the design I have: The "Phoenix"-class is named that way because I didn't think of an appropriate name yet. But besides this I need to be able to hide specific activities for specific observers, even though they are attached to them through the groups. A little Off-topic: Personally, I feel that I should be able to chop this problem down to smaller problems, but it escapes me how. I think it's because it involves multiple recursive functionalities that aren't associated with each other and different client types that needs to get information in different ways. I can't really wrap my head around it. If anyone can guide me in a direction of how to become better at encapsulating hierarchy problems, I'd be very glad to receive that as well.

• In VirtualBox, how can I access host localhost from guest (Visual Studio Dev Server from IE7 testing VM)?

  Host OS is Win7 running MyApp in the Visual Studio Development Server, bound to localhost:51227, VM is VirtualBox configured with NAT. Guest OS is Win XP with IE7 installed. My goal is to debug MyApp (running on host) from within IE7 (running on guest). Visual Studio Development server only binds to the loopback network device (i.e. localhost). It does not bind to the external IP address of my host. I've tried access 10.0.2.2:51227 from IE7 on the guest (and confirmed that 10.0.2.2 is the gateway address using ipconfig), but it appears that 10.0.2.2 binds to the external IP of the Host, NOT the loopback IP (localhost), so this does not work. Any suggestions?

• What's New in Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2?

  A year is a long time in the IT industry. Since the last VirtualBox feature release, which was a little over a year ago, we've seen: new releases of cool new operating systems, such as Windows 8, ChromeOS, and Mountain Lion; we've seen a myriad of new Linux releases from big Enterprise class distributions like Oracle 6.3, to accessible desktop distros like Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 17; and we've also seen the spec of a typical PC or laptop double in power. All of these events have influenced our new VirtualBox version which we're releasing today. Here's how... Powerful hosts  One of the trends we've seen is that as the average host platform becomes more powerful, our users are consistently running more and more vm's. Some of our users have large libraries of vm's of various vintages, whilst others have groups of vm's that are run together as an assembly of the various tiers in a multi-tiered software solution, for example, a database tier, middleware tier, and front-ends.  So we're pleased to unveil a more powerful VirtualBox Manager to address the needs of these users: VM Groups Groups allow you to organize your VM library in a sensible way, e.g.  by platform type, by project, by version, by whatever. To create groups you can drag one VM onto another or select one or more VM's and choose Machine...Group from the menu bar. You can expand and collapse groups to save screen real estate, and you can Enter and Leave a group (think iPad navigation here) by using the right and left arrow keys when groups are selected. But groups are more than passive folders, because you can now also perform operations on groups, rather than all the individual VMs. So if you have a multi-tiered solution you can start the whole stack up with just one click. Autostart Many VirtualBox users run dedicated services in their VMs, for example, running a Wiki. With these types of VM workloads, you really want the VM start up when the host machine boots up. So with 4.2 we've introduced a cross-platform Auto-start mechanism to allow you to treat VMs as host services. Headless VM Launching With VM's such as web servers, wikis, and other types of server-class workloads, the Console of the VM is pretty much redundant. For some time now VirtualBox has offered a separate launch mechanism for these VM's, namely the command-line interface commands VBoxHeadless or VBoxManage startvm ... --type headless commands. But with 4.2 we also allow you launch headless VMs from the Manager. Simply hold down Shift when launching the VM from the Manager.  It's that easy. But how do you stop a headless VM? Well, with 4.2 we allow you to Close the VM from the Manager. (BTW best to use the ACPI Shutdown method which allows the guest VM to close down gracefully.) Easy VM Creation For our expert users, the  New VM Wizard was a little tiresome, so now there's a faster 2-click VM creation mode. Just Hide the description when creating a new VM. Powerful VMs  As the hosts have become more powerful, so are the guests that are running inside them. Here are some of the 4.2 features to accommodate them: Virtual Network Interface Cards  With 4.2, it's now possible to create VMs with up to 36 NICs, when using the ICH9 chipset emulation. But with great power comes great responsibility (didn't Obi-Wan say something similar?), and so we have also introduced bandwidth limiting to prevent a rogue VM stealing the whole pipe. VLAN tagging Some of our users leverage VLANs extensively so we've enhanced the E1000 NICs to support this.  Processor Performance If you are running a CPU which supports Nested Paging (aka EPT in the Intel world) such as most of the Core i5 and i7 CPUs, or are running an AMD Bulldozer or later, you should see some performance improvements from our work with these processors. And while we're talking Processors, we've added support for some of the more modern VIA CPUs too. Powerful Automation Because VirtualBox runs atop a fully blown operating system, it makes sense to leverage the capabilities of the host to run scripts that can drive the guest VMs. Guest Automation was introduced in a prior release but with 4.2 we've revamped the APIs to allow a richer and more powerful set of operations to be executed by the guest. Check out the IGuest APIs in the VirtualBox Programming Guide and Reference (SDK). Powerful Platforms  All the hardcore engineering that has gone into 4.2 has been done for a purpose and that is to deliver a fast and powerful engine that can run almost any x86 OS because of the integrity of the virtualization. So we're pleased to add support for these platforms: Mac OS X "Mountain Lion"  Windows 8 Windows Server 2012 Ubuntu 12.04 (“Precise Pangolin”) Fedora 17 Oracle Linux 6.3  Here's the proof: We don't have time to go into the myriad of smaller improvements such as support for burning audio CDs from a guest, bi-directional clipboard control,  drag-and-drop of files into Linux guests, etc. so we'll leave that as an exercise for the user as soon as you've downloaded from the Oracle or community site and taken a peek at the User Guide.   I am able to create from using lvm GUI to do as follows: /dev/var-v0l/var /var ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/varopt-vol/var-opt /var/opt ext3 defaults 1 2 $df /dev/mapper/var-v0l 103208224 1881092 96084460 2% /var /dev/mapper/varopt-vol 103208224 192252 97773300 1% /var/opt but using command line LVM I created I can not do as the above $ df df: `/var/opt': No such file or directory /dev/mapper/var-v0l 103208224 1881092 96084460 2% /var What am I missing.

• creating a Menu from SQLite values in Java

  I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. In a DBAdapter class I created a function so the user can insert info to a table (This all works fine btw). public long insertContact(String name, String code, String location, String comments, int days, int start, int end, String type) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_CODE, code); initialValues.put(KEY_LOCATION, location); initialValues.put(KEY_COMMENTS, comments); initialValues.put(KEY_DAYS, days); initialValues.put(KEY_START, start); initialValues.put(KEY_END, end); initialValues.put(KEY_TYPE, type); return db.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } It would be the Strings inserted into KEY_NAME that I need to populate that String array with. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks so much for the help guys. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? DBAdapter db = new DBAdapter(this); String classes [] = db.getClasses(); edit: I should mention that if I manually define the array: String classes [] = {"test1", "test2", "test3", etc}; It works fine. The error is a NullPointerException Here's the logcat (sorry about the formatting). • PHP Dev Tools (Eclipse Plugin) -- Installation Error... help?

  I have already installed WEb Tools, PyDev, and the default Eclipse installation for Ubuntu 10.04 (using "sudo apt-get install eclipe"). I'm now trying to install PHP dev tools plug-in for Eclipse, and I'm getting this error msg: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. • Rails Fixtures Don't Seem to Support Transitive Associations

  So I've got 3 models in my app, connected by HABTM relations: class Member < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :groups end class Group < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :software_instances end class SoftwareInstance < ActiveRecord::Base end And I have the appropriate join tables, and use foxy fixtures to load them: -- members.yml -- rick: name: Rick groups: cals -- groups.yml -- cals: name: CALS software_instances: delphi -- software_instances.yml -- delphi: name: No, this is not a joke, someone in our group is still maintaining Delphi apps... And I do a rake db:fixtures:load, and examine the tables. Yep, the join tables groups_members and groups_software_instances have appropriate IDs in, big numbers generated by hashing the fixture names. Yay! And if I run script/console, I can look at rick's groups and see that cals is in there, or cals's software_instances and delphi shows up. (Likewise delphi knows that it's in the group cals.) Yay! But if I look at rick.groups[0].software_instances...nada. []. And, oddly enough, rick.groups[0].id is something like 30 or 10, not 398398439. I've tried swapping around where the association is defined in the fixtures, e.g. -- members.yml -- rick name: rick -- groups.yml -- cals name: CALS members: rick No error, but same result. (Later: Confirmed, same behavior on MySQL. In fact I get the same thing if I take the foxification out and use ERB to directly create the join tables, so: -- license_groups_software_instances -- cals_delphi: group_id: <%= Fixtures.identify 'cals' % software_instance_id: <%= Fixtures.identify 'delphi' $ Before I chuck it all, reject foxy fixtures and all who sail in her and just hand-code IDs...anybody got a suggestion as to why this is happening?   I've got some code that creates a list of AD groups that the user is a member of, with the intention of saying 'if user is a member of GroupX then allow admin access, if not allow basic access'. I was using a StringCollection to store this list of Groups, and intended to use the Contains method to test for membership of my admin group, but the problem is that this method only compares the full string - but my AD groups values are formatted as cn=GroupX, etc.... I want to be easily able to determine if a particular substring (i.e. 'GroupX') appears in the list of groups. I could always iterate through the groups check each for a substring representing my AD group name, but I'm more interested in finding out if there is a 'better' way. Clearly there are a number of repositories for the list of Groups, and it appears that Generics (List(Of String)) are more commonly preferred (which I may well implement anyway) but there is no in-built means of checking for a substring using this method either. Any suggestions? Or should I just iterated through the list of groups?

  I want to run single test class from command line using Maven and TestNG Things that doesn't work: mvn -Dtest=ClassName test I have defined groups in pom.xml, and this class isn't in one of those groups. So it got excluded on those grounds. mvn -Dgroups=skipped-group test mvn -Dsurefire.groups=skipped-group test when config is <plugin> <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId> <artifactId>maven-surefire-plugin</artifactId> <version>2.7.1</version> <configuration> <groups>functest</groups> </configuration> </plugin> Parameters work fine in there are no groups defined in pom.xml. Similarly, when surefire is configured with <configuration> <includes> <include>**/*UnitTest.java</include> </includes> </configuration> I can add another test with -Dtest parameter, but cannot add group. In any combination, I can narrow down tests to be executed with groups, but not expand them. What's wrong with my configuration? Is there a way to run a single test or group outside of those defined in pom.xml? Tried on Ubuntu 10.04 with Maven 2.2.1, TestNG 5.14.6 and Surefire 2.7.1

  What should a teen dev do for practical experience? If you want more details , then read on: I learnt programming when I was 9 , with GWBASIC (which I now hate) , which was what was taught @ school. That was done in a month. After that I learnt C++ and relearnt it (as I didn't know of templates and the STL before that) Recently I learnt PHP , SQL and Python. This was around the time I switched over to Ubuntu. I'd always loved the "GNUish" style of software development so I jumped right in. However , most of the projects that I found required extensive knowledge of their existing codebase. So , right now I'm this guy who knows a couple of languages and has written a couple of small programs ... but hasn't gone "big", if you get it. I would love suggestions of projects that are informal and small to medium sized , and do not require much knowledge of the codebase. Also note that I've looked at things like Google Summer of Code and sites like savannah.gnu.org and the first doesn't apply , since I'm still in school and the latter either has infeasable projects , or things that are too hard.

  I am looking for a MDI manager solution that allows documents to be grouped and show/hidden programmaticly. Example, 3 document types, red, yellow and green. When you click a button the MDI manager shows only the red documents by hiding the other 2 types tabs. None of the MDI managers (Actipro, Infragistics, etx) I have looked at can do this.   Hello, I'm trying to bend views and drupal to my will. So far I've produced a view to display the titles of my nodes. Each node will be assigned exactly one taxonomy term from the set {X, Y and Z}. So for example, Node A has a title "Car drives into field, thousands don't care". Node A has a taxonomy term "Pointless". I'd like to group all the node titles by their taxonomy term. So.. Pointless - Car drives into field, thousands don't care - .... Next Taxonomy Term - ..... - ...... - ... You get the idea. Is it doable and how do I do it?   This has to be obtained from a remote machine. The following query works not for SIDs, but for group and account names. "SELECT GroupComponent FROM Win32_GroupUser WHERE PartComponent = \"Win32_UserAccount.Domain='" + accountDomain + "',Name='" + accountName + "'\"" The Win32_Group objects it returns come in the forms of strings, and they only have domain and name (even though Win32_Group has a SID property). I have this sinking feeling I'll have to: Turn the SID into an account name by querying Win32_SID; Perform the query above; Turn each of the resulting group names into SIDs by querying Win32_Group. PLEASE tell me there's a better way.

Of course, it receives a lot of windows messages when it starts up. I can't see a way to toggle a group of breakpoints, or to save them for later, use other BPs then restore the first set.
