  • How do you determine an acceptable response time for App Engine DB requests?

    According to this discussion of Google App Engine on Hacker News, A DB (read) request takes over 100ms on the datastore. That's insane and unusable for about 90% of applications. How do you determine what is an acceptable response time for a DB read request? I have been using App Engine without noticing any issues with DB responsiveness. But, on the other hand, I'm not sure I would even know what to look for in that regard :)

  • Why increased pipeline depth does not always mean increased throughput?

    This is perhaps more of a discussion question, but I thought stackoverflow could be the right place to ask it. I am studying the concept of instruction pipelining. I have been taught that a pipeline's instruction throughput is increased once the number of pipeline stages is increased, but in some cases, throughput might not change. Under what conditions, does this happen? I am thinking stalling and branching could be the answer to the question, but I wonder if I am missing something crucial.

    Given a list of words which contains the letters a-z at least once, how would you write a program to find the shortest pangram counted by number of characters (not counting spaces) as a combination of the words? Since I am not sure whether short answers exist, this is not code golf, but rather just a discussion of how you would approach this. However, if you think you can manage to write a short program that would do this, then go ahead, and this might turn into code golf :)

But for both cases, weekly reports are always a necessity, although I don't see much value of doing this in our development team. As it is a controversial discussion, some guys from Microsoft and other corporation wrote about it and some agreed and some don't? As it is important to be aware of near future of tools that you are using, what do you think, Will Microsoft replace Silverlight with HTML5 or not? I myself believe that it will happen in 2012, the time that HTML5 released completely, and Microsoft are releasing VS2012.

If I'm not mistaken, Vim and Emacs are just text editors, similar to notepad, but with syntax highlighting.     Hi All, I have read in many forums that mapped drives are not accessible from a service as no user is logged on. Question 1) I tried making my service as a log on - as some account and i had my network drive mapped in that very account. The service still cannot access it. Why? To describe my problem, everytime my location changes, it redraws the center maker on the map.... Only catch is that it doesn't delete the previous one.
