• Unable to create a permanent alias in Mac OS

  In Linux I can well to add alias to bashrc and it will become a permanent alias. In Mac OS I tried to do the same thing: vim ~/.bashrc export PATH="$PATH:$HOME/.rvm/bin" # Add RVM to PATH f or scripting alias prj="cd ~/Documents/projects" ### Added by the Heroku Toolbelt export PATH="/usr/local/heroku/bin:$PATH" That being said, I got this: $ alias alias rvm-restart='rvm_reload_flag=1 source '\''/Users/alex/.rvm/scripts/rvm'\''' So where is my prj alias? I rebooted the laptop but nothing has changed.

• How to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer?

  Is there any way how to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer running MAC OS X or Windows 8? I would like to sync data from different accounts to different folder and not to merge these accounts to one. The reason is that every SkyDrive has it's storage limits and I'm using every account for different work data. The result should be the following: I have a number of SkyDrive accounts every for different work, let's say: S1 S2 S3 I would like to sync exactly the same number of folders on computer using different accounts to sync them: SkyDriveS1Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S1 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS2Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S2 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS3Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S3 SkyDrive) Is it possible somehow?   I have a bullet list on a slide: first item second item third item What I want to do is show those three bulleted items in a sequence like this: first bullet appears first bullet dims second bullet appears second bullet dims third bullet appears third bullet dims In other words, only one bullet is shown at a time (the one i am current discussing) to reduce audience distraction by what comes next or what i just finished discussing (the prior bullet). This is such a common thing to do, there's got to be a simple, reliable way to do it. The only way I know of is to configure the items individually (using "Build In" and "Action" on each bullet item, which is not only slow but doesn't work well). Another way i've found--which, again is very slow--is to create my bullet list not by selecting a bullet list, but to build the list manually with text boxes (one bullet item per text box) then line them up as a list. This way it's easier to manipulate them independently--again though, takes way too long to do one slide this way.

• VNC as a Support Tool Over the Internet

  I'd like to set up an environment where I can use VNC to remotely support my clients over the internet. No VPNs involved. I've used the UltraVNC repeater in the past, but the problem is that it requires a dedicated Windows server. What I'd like to do is as follows: VNC Client (me) - NAT - Internet - NAT - VNC Server (the person I'm offering support to) I'd basically like the same functionality that the UltraVNC repeater offers, but the only internet environment I have to host something on is a Linux shared server (standard hosting - PHP, Apache, etc.). Requirements: Multiple platform support for both Client and Server - specifically Mac and Windows Allows for connection with multiple NATs involved (Client and Server side) Will allow me to use my existing hosting environment for any repeater that might be involved I believe the way this would work is that the Server (the person I'm offering support to) when online would connect to a listener on the internet. When they needed support I would connect my Client to the same listener, see them connected, and use the listener (man-in-the-middle) to piggyback my Client to connect to their Server. I'm open to using any software (not limiting myself to VNC) but would prefer a FOSS solution (which is why I'm leaning towards VNC). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Need to find jni.h in cmake on Mac

  I am trying to make VTK compile on a Mac Air machine. I am using CMake 2.8-9, using Xcode4 as the generator. If I press the Configure button with VTK_WRAP_JAVA not checked, it will go with no errors. However I definitely need to use the wrap java since my main program is in Java and I need to get to VTK which is c++. As soon as I check the wrap Java, I get Could NOT find JNI. It apparently is looking for jni.h which in Linux there is no problem finding, but in the Mac it apparently can't find it. I did a locate jni.h and got new-host-2:~ geraldkolodny$ locate jni.h /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.7.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Headers/jni.h /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.8.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Headers/jni.h /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.7.0_07.jdk/Contents/Home/include/jni.h I tried to manually put into JAVA_INCLUDE_PATH2 either entry 2 or 3 (without the jni.h at the end), but it still can't find jni.h. Xcode used to have a template for jni but that is now gone in the latest version. I am fresh out of ideas on how to solve this problem. I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks, Ilan

• [iTunes] Using custom ID3-Tags?

  Hi guys, I hope I am in the right forum for this question. I love foobar2000 on windows and have 2 custom Tags for my mp3s Rate and mood. Now I have to use a Mac to play my music and emulating foobar won't work, because foobar has to recreate its database every time it starts... ans thats about 2h of hahsing - no good. So is there any way to read out, order by and write custom tags with iTunes or any other, if possible free, mac app? Thanks for your answers.

• Mac Book Pro wakes up in my backpack

  This has happened to me twice: I press the power button on my Mac Book Pro, choose sleep, close it, unplug everything, confirm that is off (by pressing my ear to it) and put it in my bag. Some minutes later, the laptop wakes up by itself. Both times I caught it in time. The second time it was so hot I couldn't touch some parts -- it refused to actually wake up, and the screen was blank. Restarting it worked though. Any ideas what might be going on and/or how to prevent this? More details: It's a Mac Book Pro unibody 15" from 2009.

• Mac OS X: remove write-protect flag from file in Terminal

  Hi, I have a file on a FAT32 volume which is shown as write-protected in Finder (so I cannot move it). Removing that write-protected flag in the information dialog works just fine. However, I have many more such files and I thus want to do it via Terminal. I already tried via 'chmod +w' but that didn't worked. 'ls -la' showed me that they are already just fine ("-rwxrwxrwx 1 az az " where az is my user account). Then I thought this might be stored in some xattr properties but 'xattr -l' didn't gave me any entry. Then I thought this might be some ACL setting (whereby I thought they would be stored as xattr but let's try it anyway) - and some Google search returned me something with 'chmod -a' or 'chmod -i' or so. All these tries only give me chmod: No ACL currently associated with file" or chmod: Failed to set ACL on file...: Operation not permitted". But I definitly have no write access to the file because I cannot move it or do any other change to it (in Terminal). Removing the write-access flag in Finder solves that.

• Can't Type Tilde character in Mac OS X

  Hi this is a new problem that I did not have a few weeks ago. I have a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard running on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The problem is that I cannot type a tilde. Instead when I press the tilde I get this character: §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ I cannot for the life of me figure this out, except that I vaguely remember I can asked to redetect the Mac keyboard layout for this keyboard and I think i chose the wrong one. Now I get this weird character when pressing tilde. How can I fix this? Or how can I redetect this keyboard layout? Thanks.

• Where do I find a color profile for my MacBook Pro display?

  I installed Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro, overwriting OSX Lion. The screen has a blue tint due to lack of a calibrated color profile. I once used the "Color LCD" ICC profile from the OSX partition and it worked great, but I've since lost it since I decided to overwrite OSX completely. I tried the manual calibration in Windows 7 but I just can't seem to get it right like it was while using the color profile that was on the OSX partition. All Google tells me is where to find the ICC profile in OSX, and to copy it over. Do I have to reinstall OSX just for the color profile? Even if I do, where does the profile actually come from? Is it on the OSX disk, or is it somehow retrieved from the hardware itself? Is there a way to get it without reinstalling OSX? Thanks!

• Unable to mount TuneUp DMG and no errors given on Mac

  Simply try to download and run the DMG "installer" from TuneUp on SnowLeopard. It doesn't work, doesn't give any error message and not even Console messages! I've just mounted other DMG files with no problems, both right before and right after trying that one. Anyone knows what could be wrong there? I've actually managed to open it using Springy, so no big worries. But that doesn't answer what's wrong with it. That just shows it's not file corruption.

  The "Show In Finder" action isn't working on Mac OS X Mountain Lion. The problem has just started to occur all the time, before it was a bit sporadic, but now it happens all the time. Things that don't work: In the chrome Downloads page clicking any of the "Show in Finder" links. Right clicking a file in XCode and choosing "Show in Finder" Things that work: open . in terminal command-n after command tabbing to Finder.   After upgrading to Lion I'm having problem mounting NTFS drives in read/write mode. This is because NTFS-3G distributed by http://www.tuxera.com does not work with Lion. As far their suggestion I installed NTFS-3G using MacPort. But as far as I can see it does not come with the usual preference pane. Its not enabled by default. Do anyone know how to enable it? Or how to have the Preference Pane for the NTFS-3G from MacPorts.

  I was downloading my Exhibit II's DCIM camera folder (with month's of photos inside) to its external SD card, in order to transfer them into my laptop. In my overconfidence, I hurriedly chose cut-to-move (rather than copy-to-move) when KABOOM! —an automatic Android OS update popped up before I could choose the target!!! I figured everything was in cache & calmly tried to go through with the update. But that was not a typically seamless event. It showed downloading icon but hmm… since I rooted the phone it brought the command line up & recovery sequence. But neither Android nor I had yet downloaded any alternate custom ROM Files to internal SD to update from! So were they trying to make me unroot my phone by giving me some bogus update on the fly or just give me a hard time in trying to hand me down an unrooted ROM that I'd have to figure out how to root again? Yes, I know there was that blurb about overwriting a file of the same name but I was trying to shake the darn stubborn update being forced on my phone during this precarious moment. I thought I had frozen or turned off all those auto-updates previously. Anyway, phones are small & fingers are big (sigh)... I tried to reboot into safe mode but the resultant photo file was partially overwritten (200 files had names but Zero bytes in them). I thought maybe it was still hung in cache or deposited somewhere else but I have searched everywhere with file managers. Since I did not have Titanium backing up camera, photo folder or gallery, I cannot recover 200+ photos. Dumb. You can understand my dilemma as I am involved in the arts & although just a camera phone, most of these photos were historic & aesthetic or at least as to subject matter. Photo-ops don't reoccur. I have tried a couple of recovery apps from the market like Search Duplicates & Recover to no avail. I was only able to salvage stuff I'd sent out in messages. I've got several decades in computers & this is such a miserable beginner's piece of bad luck I can't believe it happened to me. They were precious photos! Yes, I turned on Titanium since & yes I even tried USB to laptop recoveries. Being on a MacBookPro I'm trying androidfiletransfer.dmg, but I'd have to upgrade to Peach Sunrise to get above Android 3.0 for that App to recognize the phone via USB & the programmer says installation zeros your data, so that pretty much toasts any secret hidden places where these photos may have been deposited. Don't want to do that & am still trying to find them. They certainly didn't make it to my external SD Card. If any of you techies out there know anything, please help & thanks. Despite decades of being in computing, unfamiliar & ever-changing hard or software can humble even the most seasoned veterans.

• problems with Apache on Snow Leopard

  I kind of screwed up the Apache "stuff" on my Mac. Usually when I visit http://localhost/, I would see the "It Works!" but now it just lists the directory and files inside /Library/WebServer/Documents. When I try to stop/start/restart the server with sudo apachectl stop, I get: httpd: Syntax error on line 68 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so, 10): Symbol not found: _apr_file_info_get$INODE64\n Referenced from: /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so\n Expected in: flat namespace\n in /usr/libexec/apache2/mod_disk_cache.so I don't want to do the MacPorts install, I tried it earlier but... I just want to do it via source code with the usual ./configure, make, make install. Any ideas on how to get this working? Is there a way to totally remove Apache and then reinstall a fresh version? • The cleaner way to upgrading a Mac

  This page list a way to do a clean install of Snow Leopard without loosing any of your settings. This sounds pretty darn good since my mac did get a bit slower over time. The method basically involves copying your existing drive to an external one, then doing an Erase and Install from the installation DVD. After the installation, supposedly, I'll be presented with an option to migrate settings from another Mac. I am not all that familiar with the Mac, hence what is probably a simple question. With this migration option, will I be able to copy over all my applications or will I have to reinstall them from scratch?

• OS X random, jumpy dragging behavior

  This problem has been going on since I got 10.7, and is persisting or even getting worse since I updated to Mavricks. The best way to describe it is thru an example- Let's say I'm working in Safari. Everything is working fine. Then, I'll switch to another app by clicking on it's window, for example, I'll click on Messages to shoot back a reply. When I click back to Safari, keyboard and mouse inputs don't work! The only way I can regain control of the app (Safari) is by clicking on the apps top bar, which then causes the app to jump left or right. If I'm in Messages and I switch back to Safari by clicking said top bar, it works fine. Same with switching back and forth using command-tab. I've narrowed the problem down to this - the first app (Safari, in this example) is, for some reason, deciding that I'm in the process of dragging the window around. This could be just an oddly persistent glitch in my system, but has anyone else seen this before? Perhaps a misplaced default write... somewhere along the line? Update A PRAM reset did absolutely nothing
