• Loud fans despite cool system under Linux (but not Windows)

  My new desktop computer runs almost silently under Windows, but the fans seem to run on a constantly high setting under Linux. Psensor shows that the GPU (with NVidia drivers) is thirty-something degrees and the CPU is about the same, so it's not just down to Linux somehow being more processor-intensive. I've read that the BIOS controls the fans under Linux, which makes sense given the high fan speeds when in BIOS as well. It's under Windows, when the ASUS AI Suite 3 software seems to take control, that the system runs more quietly and only speeds the fans up when required. So is there a Linux app which offers a similar dynamic control of the fans, or a setting hidden somewhere in the ASUS BIOS which allows the same but regardless of the OS? EDIT - I've tried using lm-sensors and fancontrol, but pwmconfig tells me "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed". This is after the sensors-detect command does find an 'Intel digital thermal sensor', and despite the sensors working fine in apps like psensor. Help getting this to work would likely solve the problem.

  When I try to boot from my USB it says: (initramfs) unable to find a live medium containing a live file system I know of lots of questions here about this problem... I've tried every solution but nothing worked. I just ask if anyone here who got a Toshiba Sattelite Pro c650 and found the solution, because I simply cant install Ubuntu 10.04 because of this :((( Other spec: - I have USB 2.0 - Changed all possible settings in BIOS. (AHCI..) - ISO is not corrupted (boot is succesful on my other HP Laptop) Thanks. Edit: But XUbuntu works :/

• How to correctly create a virtual file system?

  A task in my homework assignment asks me to create a virtual file system, mount it, and perform some operations on it. I am supposed to create a file of 10 MB whose bits are all set to 0, format it as ext3 and mount it. This is how I've done that: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/filesyst bs=10485760 count=1 sudo mkfs.ext3 ~/filesyst sudo mount –o loop ~/filesyst /media/fuse Even though I've used /dev/sero, the file i still full of gibberish characters (mostly at-signs). The permissions on /media/fuse are drw-rw-rw- (which are alright), but the permissions on the files inside it are something like this: d????????? ? ? ? ? ? lost+found -????????? ? ? ? ? ? secret_bin Where have I gone wrong?

  When I try to log onto Ubuntu, I get a notice that reads: The system is running in low graphics mode. I searched for a solution and there are a slew of answers. However, many of them seem to suggest reinstalling different things. After pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and getting to a terminal, I attempt commands like sudo apt-get install example. Upon doing so I get notices that say things such as could not resolve host which I am assuming means I'm not connected to the Internet. Since I can not connect to the Internet, none of these responses are helpful to me. What can I do?

  I stumbled upon this news article on BBC, RSA splits passwords in two to foil hackers' attacks tl;dr - a (randomized) password is split in half and is stored across two separate servers, to foil hackers that gained access to either server upon a security breach. Now the main question is, how would this kind of system would be made... codespeaking, for PHP which I commonly develop on my web applications, the database password is normally stored in a configuration file, i.e. config.php with the username and password, in that case it is understandable that the passwords can be stolen if the security was compromised. However when splitting and sending the other half to the other server, how would this go on when making a communication to the other server (keeping in mind with PHP) since the other server password would be stored in a configuration file, wouldn't it? In terms of security is to keep the other server password away from the main one, just exactly how would the main server communicate, without exposing any other password, apart from the first server. This certainly makes me think...

• Alternatives to multiple sprite batches for achieving 2D particle system depth

  In my 2D XNA game, I render all my sprites with a single sprite batch using SpriteSortMode.BackToFront and BlendState.AlphaBlend. I'm adding a particle system based on the App Hub particles sample. Since this uses SpriteSortMode.Deferred and BlendState.Additive, I will need to have two SpriteBatch.Begin / SpriteBatch.End pairs: one for 'regular' sprites, and one for particles. In my top-down shooter, If I want to have explosions appear under planes, but above the ground, then I believe I will have to have three Begin/End pairs, first to draw everything under the explosions, then to draw the explosions, then to draw everything above the explosions. If I want to have particle effects at multiple different depths, then I'm going to need even more Begin/Endpairs. This is all easy to code, but I'm wondering if there is an alternative way to handle this?

• Locomotion-system with irregular IK

  Im having some trouble with locomtions (Unity3D asset) IK feet placement. I wouldn't call it "very bad", but it definitely isn't as smooth as the Locomotion System Examples. The strangest behavior (that is probably linked to the problem) are the rendered foot markers that "guess" where the characters next step will be. In the demo, they are smooth and stable. However, in my project, they keep flickering, as if Locomotion changed its "guess" every frame, and sometimes, the automatic defined step is too close to the previous step, or sometimes, too distant, creating a very irregular pattern. The configuration is (apparently)Identical to the human example in the demo, so I guessing the problem is my model and/or animation. Problem is, I can't figure out was it is =S Has anyone experienced the same problem? I uploaded a video of the bug to help interpreting the issue (excuse the HORRIBLE quality, I was in a hurry).

  I had installed ubuntu 12.04 using wubi. But each time i boot the system an internal error message pops up. As show below:- Executable path /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-intel.py Package xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.17.0-1ubuntu4 Problem Type crash Apportversion 2.0.1-0ubuntu7 and so on.. I had earlier upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 from ubuntu 11.10. And encountered the same issue. Hence i uninstalled the OS and reinstalled using wubi. I had posted the same query in ubuntu.com/support (Question Number: 195525) But couldnt find a solution. I am using dell inspiron with intel pentium. • Where is Oracle Utilities Application Framework V3?

  You may of noticed that the latest version of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework is V4.0.1. The last release of the Framework was V2.2. So what happened to V3? The short answer is that there is no V3 of the framework. The long answer is that the Oracle Utilities Application Framework has long been associated with Oracle Utilities Customer Care And Billing and Oracle Enterprise Taxation Management only. As more and more of the Oracle Tax And Utilities products are migrated onto the framework the association betweent eh original products on the framework is less appropriate. Therefore it was decided to pick a version number to emphasize the decouplinf of the releases of the Framework with any particular product. To illustrate this, the Oracle Mobile Workforce Management (MWM) V2.0.0 product uses Oracle Utilities Applicaton Framework V4.0.1. If we used the old numberings schema then MWM would be V4.0.1 which makes no sense, given the last release of MWM was V1.x The framework has its own development team and product management. It basicaly has its own schedule (though it is influenced by the products that use it still - which makes sense). So that s the reasoning around the version numbering change for the framework.

• System wide Proxy settings when on a windows network with a password

  I'm using Ubuntu on a windows network. I want to connect to the world wide web. I have followed the steps here which I have found very useful. However when I try to ping a website (eg: ping www.wikipedia.org) I get no reply. I can ping local computers on my network, but I need to go through our proxy to get to the world wide web. I can even browse wikipedia using firefox, I just needed to enter the proxy configuration script location and my username and password. I'm quite sure the reason I'm having this trouble is because I havn't entered a username and password. I'm not sure how to do this on a system wide level. ultimately I would like to be able to use package managers like synaptic but first I need them to be able to connect to the internet. EDIT As sugested I created a /etc/apt/apt.conf file like Acquire::http::Proxy "http://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; Acquire::https::Proxy "https://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; Acquire::ftp::Proxy "ftp://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; Acquire::socks::Proxy "socks://chrisav:[email protected]:8080"; However I still cant ping wikipedia when I try installing stuff I get chris@chris-Ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install kate Reading package lists...   Is there any Document Management System in Ubuntu? I tried Alfresco, RavenDB, Owl, Document Manager. Alfresco, RavenDB are heavy. More than my requirements. Owl having source issues. Document Manager im trying to install. Should keep data on the same machine as I am looking for more of internal purpose. Should allow to upload Zip files as well. If it extracts Zip it will be a great + Should allow to send email to preconfigured email addresses Should allow to upload data of size around 100MB at one go Should maintain history of documents also deleted documents Should allow role based document access. • How do I access the system tray?

  So I'm messing around with Natty a little, and I noticed that all the apps that would normally use the system tray (or "notification area"?) aren't displaying there. Is that a bug, or is that the way it's going to be? I heard something about Ubuntu getting rid of that feature entirely. Is there a way to add it back? I mean, I didn't really like it, either, especially when there were apps that used it unnecessarily, but I can't use CryptKeeper at all now, or easycrypt, and I don't know whether Dropbox has synced without opening Nautilus.

• System crashes when internet connection is unplugged

  When i first tried to install any ubuntu newer than 10.04 on my netbook (Acer aspire one 722 11,6" WXGA - C-60 Dual Core APU - AMD Radeon HD 6250 - 1x HDMI - 2GB DDR3 - 320GB - 802.11bgN - 6CELL2.2 - BT 3.0 - VGA Webcam), it would fail to boot. I found out that the only fix to this was linking it to the internet via lan-cable during the installation. However, after installing ubuntu 12.04 successfully my system is crashing everytime i unplug the lan-cable. My first thought was disabling the netbook´s w-lan (via the band at the top) but it was not fixing the problem. Looking on the taskmanager ('top') during the process brought no further insight, no process was exploding or something like that. As i am out of guesses help would be really appreaciated. • Collaborative Organizations build Organizational Culture

  “A Collaborative organization builds its culture based on the idea of the family or an athletic team.”(Hoefling, 2001) As I grew up, I participated in many different types of clubs, civic organizations, and sports teams.  Now looking back at the more successful undertakings, I can see three commonalities amongst them. They all shared a defined purpose or goal, defined functional roles, and a shared sense of responsibility to the group. Defined Purpose or Goal In order to unit people to work together, they must share a common goal or have a common purpose. An example of this would be the Lions Club International Foundation. There purpose is to help everyone to lead healthier and more productive lives, nurtures the potential of youth, promotes health, serves the elderly, empowers the disabled and helps victims of disasters. This organization holds localized meetings across the world and works in conjunction with other localized clubs within there organization along with other organizations to promote common goals. If there are no common goals for the group, then there is nothing that binds people to the group, and nothing will be done. Defined Functional Roles In order for an organization to work and function as a team, they must have defined roles and everyone must know how their roles are interdependent on each other. Lets shed light on this subject by looking at a football team’s offense.  Each player has an assigned role to play each time the ball is snapped. The offensive line blocks for the running back or quarterback, the quarterback passes the ball to the wide receiver or hands it off to the running back and the running back and wide receivers run with the ball towards the goal line. Each member of this team shares a common goal of scoring a touchdown, but if each team member does not fulfill their assigned roles the offences will collapse and the team will lose yards. This will provide a set back to the teams goal of scoring a touchdown because they potential are then farther away from the goal line.  In addition, if all the players do not know their roles and how they are part of a larger team then even larger yard losses can occur. Shared Sense of Personal Responsibility to the Group Shared responsibility comes with the shared common goals. Each person in the organization must do their part to promote the common shared goal or purpose based on their abilities. A prime example of this is a wrestling team competing in a match. Points are awarded to the team based on how many wins the team achieves in the meet and of that how many wins where won by decision or by pin. If a wrestler pins his opponent the teams will receive 2 points for the win, but if the wrestler wins by decision, then the team only gets one point for the win. So it is the responsibility of each person on the team to not get pinned if they are unable to win the match. • How to fix "error: unknown file system" on all available partitions

  I've had a running problem with removing Linux from my Windows 7 laptop. Initially, it was installed as a dual-boot, and worked well. To remove, I deleted the partitions on my laptop. This removed grub, and I was left with needing to enter: set root=... set prefix=... insmod normal normal each restart. I didn't restore the Windows boot-loader and have since re-partitioned my drive. Now, upon reaching the command prompt screen, an ls query showshd0, with three partitions, but none of them have a recognizable boot-loader as each returns with error: unknown file system. Booting from a Windows 7 rescue disk doesn't seem to work, as it sends me to the same command prompt terminal. All I'm looking to do is restore the boot-loader, either grub or Windows 7. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Accidental deletion of the Gmail (IMAP) Trash 'System Label' in Evolution

  I am using 11.04 and Evolution 2.32.2 I accidentally deleted the Gmail (IMAP) Trash 'System Label' in Evolution. Because this is Gmail object and (not a label per say), it is not deletable in Gmail. Under my Gmail account settings, I have made sure that both, 'Show in Label List' and 'Show in IMAP' are checked. That being said, I cannot seem to restore this IMAP folder in Evolution. I deleted the affected mail account, re-created, restarted Evolution, and no change. Any thoughts? Thanks.

• Reboot to fail safe mode when root file system is full

  I have a system running on a 4GB Nandrive. When the drive is full, Ubuntu will not boot :( and I have to plug in a rescue thumbdrive to delete files. The problem is the hardware is not easily accessible except via network. Is there a sure-fire way to boot Ubuntu, say, to RAM or other means when the disk is full or on any other errors in the normal boot process? In other words, is there a fallback rescue boot mode with networking? Thanks for any advice.

  We have previously covered how to send the contents of a text file to the Windows Clipboard with a simple Send To shortcut, but what if you want to do the opposite? That is: send the contents of the clipboard to a text file with a simple shortcut. No problem. Here’s how. Copy the ClipOut Utility While Windows offers the command line tool ‘clip’ as a way to direct console output to the clipboard, it does not have a tool to direct the clipboard contents to the console. To do this, we are going to use a small utility named ClipOut (download link at the bottom). Simply download and extract this file to a location in your Windows PATH variable (if you don’t know what this means, just extract the EXE to your C:\Windows folder) and you are ready to go. Add the Send To Shortcut Open your Send To folder location by going to Run > shell:sendto Create a new shortcut with the command: CMD /C ClipOut > Note the above command will overwrite the contents of the selected file. If you would like to append to the contents of the selected file, use this command instead: CMD /C ClipOut >> Of course, you could make shortcuts for both. Give a descriptive name to the shortcut. You’re finished. Using this shortcut will now send the text contents copied to your Windows Clipboard to the selected file. It is important to note that the ClipOut tool only supports outputting text. If you had binary data copied to your clipboard, then the output would be empty. Changing the Icon By default, the icon for the shortcut will appear as a command prompt, but you can easily change this by editing the properties of the shortcut and clicking the Change Icon button. We used an icon located in “%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll”, but any icon of your liking will do. As an additional tweak, you can set the properties of the shortcut to run minimized. This will prevent the command window from “blinking” when the send to command is run (instead it will blink in your taskbar, which is hardly noticeable). Links Download ClipOut Utility

• Very slow system after installing 13.10?

  Just "upgraded" from 13.04 to 13.10 on my Acer C7 Ubuntu'd Chromebook and first thing I noticed is that everything is very slow and unresponsive. Hardly had this on 13.04. Opened system monitor to check processes and I saw that compiz is consistently using 20-80% of my CPU, even on idle. I tried installing Compizconfig, but it doesn't start up at all. This is the final release, not a beta. How can I make it more responsive - like it should be?

• Abstract skill/talent system implementation

  I've been making small 2D games for about 3 years now (XNA and more recently LWJGL/Slick2D). My latest idea would involve some form of "talent tree" system in a real time game. I've been wracking my brain but can't think of a structure to hold a talent. Something like "Your melee attack is an instant kill if behind the target" I'd like to come up with an abstract object rather than putting random conditionals into other methods. I've solved some relatively complex problems before but I don't even know where to begin with this one. Any help would be appreciated - Java, pseudocode or general concepts are all great.

• How do I make a simple level system?

  I've been learning programming for a while and things are slow but steady. I only have a couple experiments that look something like a game (JavaScript,HTML5,CANVAS). One of the things I would like to establish this early in my process though is a basic level system to my games. I'm thinking like Atari, NES type simple. mainMenu , level1 , level2 , ... Later I'll work on including such screens as; titleScreen , pause , highScore. But for now just looking for the basics. Any good articles/tutorial links would help. • problem transferring Win 7 operating system hard drive to be used as external hard drive

  Win 7 Asus MA479 8GB Ram hard drives are 500GB The operating system was a Caviar Green, and I tried to exchange it for a Caviar Blue. The Caviar Blue took the install correctly, but the Green, the prior operating system hard drive, will not allow itself to be used as an external hard drive. I use TrueCrypt and tried to format the Green and it freezes each time at the very end of the encyrption of the partition. I took the Blue out of the system and tried to encrypt it, and same problem. I think there must be something on the hard drive that shows it was a system drive and it causes a conflict. I have tried writing over the system hard drive to fully erase everything but that does not work, it still freezes. The drives will work in a different pc, i.e. other pc where it never was the system drive. The external hard drive is connected esata through Thermaltake. I have used TrueCrypt on various pc's for years including this Win7 with no problem. Thank you.

Essentially, it's using A* to plot between Actions that mutate the world state. To provide a fair chance for all Actions and Goals to execute, I'm using a heuristic function to estimate the cost of doing something. What is the best way to estimate this cost so that it is comparable to all the other costs? As an example, estimating the cost of running away from an enemy versus attacking it - how should the cost be calculated to be comparable?

• windows system (bootloader) partition accidently deleted during multiple installs

  After experimenting with multiple variations of backtrack and xbmcbuntu variations of Ubuntu with dual boot successfully, my windows partition became unrecognizable to grub. I used my windows boot CD to try to correct the problem. However, I deleted all partitions except for the NFTS one that contains my old windows install. (And, merged all other ones into that in hopes of getting back to the windows boot loader and out of grub) Now, all I get is a grub command prompt when I try and boot the system (how??? - I thought I deleted grub) And, now the windows boot disc doesn't even recognize the install. I've tried TRK to try and resolve the problem. Though I must admit ignorance in correctly using this utility. I've searched for other answers to this problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
