  • Is Programming or web designing a site harder? [closed]

    Given that someone has almost an equal understanding of coding(java, php, etc) and web designing(css, xml, photoshop) and wants to create a functional site. Which generally would be more time-consuming.     Microsoft's FxCop tool uses the introspection API. This introspection API could be used to develop new code analysis tools. But the introspection api is not documented well. Additionally, I was not able to figure out any blogs which explains this API in breadth and depth of it. The knowledge gained by understanding the API can also be used for writing custom FxCop rules. Does anybody knows about any blog or resources which explains the same?

  • Ruby on Rails: Accessing production database data for testing

    With Ruby on Rails, is there a way for me to dump my production database into a form that the test part of Rails can access? I'm thinking either a way to turn the production database into fixtures, or else a way to migrate data from the production database into the test database that will not get routinely cleared out by Rails. I'd like to use this data for a variety of tests, but foremost in my mind is using real data with the performance tests, so that I can get a realistic understanding of load times.

  • Very basic question about Hadoop and compressed input files

    I have started to look into Hadoop. If my understanding is right i could process a very big file and it would get split over different nodes, however if the file is compressed then the file could not be split and wold need to be processed by a single node (effectively destroying the advantage of running a mapreduce ver a cluster of parallel machines). My question is, assuming the above is correct, is it possible to split a large file manually in fixed-size chunks, or daily chunks, compress them and then pass a list of compressed input files to perform a mapreduce?

Is there anything like this out there? I tried to search on Google, but majority of articles were about starting with PHP and its basic functions. Any input is really welcome as I'm trying to understand the language internally - I'm tired of my mindless typing of code without understanding its essence.

From my understanding, Apple allows Ruby to run on iPhone as long as users can't execute arbitrary code (Rhomobile uses Ruby). How can I bundle Ruby/Python with my app, call a function from my Obj-C code, and get the result (a string) back in C or Obj-C format?

  • In Objective C, is there a way to call reference a typdef enum from another class?

    It is my understanding that typedef enums are globally scoped, but if I created an enum outside of the @interface of RandomViewController.h, I can't figure out how to access it from OtherViewController.m. Is there a way to do this? So... "RandomViewController.h" #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> typedef enum { EnumOne, EnumTwo }EnumType; @interface RandomViewController : UIViewController { } and then...   • R or Python for file manipulation

    I have 4 reasonably complex r scripts that are used to manipulate csv and xml files. These were created by another department where they work exclusively in r. My understanding is that while r is very fast when dealing with data, it's not really optimised for file manipulation. Can I expect to get significant speed increases by converting these scripts to python? Or is this something of a waste of time?

    I'm playing with numbers in Java, and want to see how big a number I can make. It is my understanding that BigInteger can hold a number of infinite size, so long as my computer has enough Memory to hold such a number, correct? My problem is that BigInteger.pow accepts only an int, not another BigInteger, which means I can only use a number up to 2,147,483,647 as the exponent. Is it possible to use the BigInteger class as such? BigInteger.pow(BigInteger) Thanks.

Can you help me understanding what is the problem or how to achieve the same result?

    My understanding is that Ladner's theorem is basically this: P != NP implies that there exists a set NPI where NPI is not in P and NPI is not NP-complete What happens to this theorem if we assume that P = NP rather than P != NP? We know that if NP Intermediate doesn't exist, then P = NP. But can NP Intermediate exist if P = NP?

And also where can I find the source code for any linux services. e.g. /etc.init.d/rc5.d/S14cron . It will be helpful in understanding how to implement a service.
