• I'm not sure if I should use a redirect

  Hi there, I have an affiliate link on my webpage. When you click on the link it follows the href value which is as follows: www.site_name.com/?refer=my_affiliate_id This would be fine, except that the site offers no tracking for the ads, so I can't tell how many clicks I am getting. I could easily implement my own tracking by changing the original link href value to a php script which increments some click stats in a database and then redirects the user to the original page. But I have read some articles that say that using redirects may be seen by google as a sign of 'blackhat' techniques and they might rank me lower, unindex my site or even hurt the site that I'm redirecting too. Does anybody know if this is true, or have any idea of the best way I could go about this? Many thanks in advance Joe

• Explorer right-click uploader for CMS?

  I'm looking for a "right-click upload" application like RightLoad - an application that can upload media files to a remote FTP server from the Windows Explorer's context menu. I want to customize the application to serve as a customized image uploading tool to a PHP-based CMS. The user would upload images and other media files to a defined FTP account (I'm also very open for other methods of transport, as long as they are supported by run-off-the-mill web hosting stacks) that they could then use in the CMS they log in to. For me to be able to do these customizations, the application would have to be Open Source - RightLoad is "only" Freeware. Alternatively, I'm open for closed-source and commercial suggestions as long as they allow "pre-packaged" server settings that can easily be deployed to the user. Does anybody know such a tool compatible with at least the most current versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7)?

• When to alter a function vs when to just write a new one...?

  /is n00b Through the gift of knowledge and expertise encoded here, I am doing my best to avoid n00b mistakes as I learn the basics of programming. I use functions when I (think I) can in PHP, and keep them somewhat sorted in different includes. The n00b problem I'm running into now is situations where perhaps 4/5th of an existing function is relevant to a new need. Maybe there are a slightly different set of inputs, or an additional calculation or two in the series, or output needs a different format/structure... but the core of the function is still applicable. Is there a good rule of thumb regarding when one should bolt-on crap to an original function and when one should (literally) copy & paste most of it into a new function and tweak to fit the situation? On the one hand I feel bad duping code, on the other I feel bad cluttering up an existing function with stuff not always needed...

• MySQL or SQL Server

  I'm creating an application that I want to run on either MySQL or SQL Server (not both at the same time) I've created two PHP classes DatabaseMySQL and DatabaseSQLSVR and I'd like my application to know which database class to use based on a constant set up at install. define(DB_TYPE, "mysql"); // or "sqlsrv" I'm trying to think of the best way to handle this. My thought is to do an "if else" wherever I instantiate the database: $db = (DB_TYPE == "mysql") ? new DatabaseMySQL : new DatabaseSQLSVR; I know there has to be a better way of doing this though. Suppose I want to add a third database type later; I'll have to go and redo all my code. Yuk!! Any help would be much appreciated. Thank

• Building html tables from query data... faster?

  With my limited experience/knowledge I am using the following structure to generate HTML tables on the fly from MySQL queries: $c = 0; $t = count($results); $table = '<table>'; while ($c < $t) { $table .= "<tr><td>$results[0]</td><td>$results[1]</td> (etc etc) </tr>"; ++$c; } $table .= '</table>'; this works, obviously. But for tables with 300+ rows there is a noticeable delay in pageload while the script builds the table. Currently the maximum results list is only about 1,100 rows, and the wait isn't long, but there's clearly a wait. Are there other methods for outputting an HTML table that are faster than my WHILE loop? (PHP only please...)

  In DDD, Repository takes care of saving and retrieving domain objects and also serves as collection of Aggregate Roots. My question is how do you retrieve the information for those child entities (let's say from DB) of an Aggregate where basic rule is Repository should just hold collection of Aggregate Roots (parent object) and not child objects? For example: User (parent object) Orders (child object) User domain object is stored in user table and Orders are stored in another table. I have done a php project on LMS with Zend Framework, Everything is in live. When user post contents for a subject that may be size 200K and submitted to the server takes too slow. Sometime server may get DOWN. I login to server(PUTTY) and checked i found that there is more resource occupied in my server. It uses full memory on the server.   I've been assigned a project for a website where users will be allowed to upload video's (using a YouTube API) but more importantly (for me) they will also be allowed to submit video embed codes (from numerous video sites, YouTube, Vimeo, etc. etc.). Having no experience with allowing users to embed video: How can I best protect against cross site scripting and/or cross site request forgery attacks specifically for video embedding? What are some of the common pitfalls to watch for? At a minumum I would think to strip all tags except <object> and <embed>. But I have a feeling this will not be enough, will it? If it is of importance, the environment will be: PHP/Zend Framework MySQL Bonuspoints: Is there a common minimum golden rule/code template for video embed codes that are valid across all video sites that I could use to filter the input?

• Open Source CMS with linked sub-sections and users

  I work at a small college that wants to make "sites" for all of the academic departments (~30). I managed to talk them out of their original idea: 30 individual Wordpress installations. What a maintenance nightmare! What I'm looking for is a CMS (preferably Python or PHP, as those are my areas of expertise) that can automagically create a subsection (or subsite, whatever the appropriate vernacular) complete with user and a couple of headings based on a template. So, I could just click a button and have a new subsection for a new department complete with its own authorized user, and default subsection headings/menu/pages. Is this just wishful thinking? I don't mind getting my hands dirty (this would be the whole of my job duties), so what platform would be a good starting point for something like this? Open source is a must for me as I have literally no budget, and I'm probably going to have to dig pretty deep into the application.

• Can I embed video on external sites while still using tokens to protect the content?

  On our own website, it's easy to protect against direct links to our video content by grabbing a token through AJAX and verifying the token through PHP before the file download is started. However I'm also researching how I could provide an embed feature, like YouTube or vimeo etc., without compromising this security feature. The problem is that the embed code I want to provide should look something like <object>...<embed>...</embed></object> -- but I don't know how to grab and append the token to the filename. • What can cause a double page request?

  I am currently investigating a double request problem on my site. Not all the time, but sometimes, a requested page will in fact load twice...which is not a problem really until it is on a page with PHP that inserts stuff into my db on request (my tracking script). I have read that an empty src in an image tag, and an empty url() in a css background could potentially cause the page to be requested twice. However, I can't find any problems with those. Is there anything else that could be causing something like this?
