  • Language Design: Combining Gotos and Functions

    I'm designing and currently rethinking a low-level interpreted programming language with similarities to assembler. I very soon came across the functions/loops/gotos decision problem and thought that while loops like while and for would be too high-level and unfitting, gotos would be too low level, unmaintainable and generally evil again. Functions like you know them from most languages that have return values and arguments aren't fitting in the language's concept either. So I tried to figure out something between a function and a goto which is capable of Recursion Efficient loops After some thinking I came up with the idea of subroutines: They have a beginning and an end like a function They have a name but no arguments like a goto You can go into one with jump and go out of it again before its end with return (doesn't give back any result, only stops the subroutine) Handled just like normal code - Global scope like goto So I wanted to know: Is the idea above good? What are the (dis)advantages? Would there be a better combination of function and goto or even a completely new idea?

  • Uploading a file using post() method of QNetworkAccessManager

    I'm having some trouble with a Qt application; specifically with the QNetworkAccessManager class. I'm attempting to perform a simple HTTP upload of a binary file using the post() method of the QNetworkAccessManager. The documentation states that I can give a pointer to a QIODevice to post(), and that the class will transmit the data found in the QIODevice. This suggests to me that I ought to be able to give post() a pointer to a QFile. For example: QFile compressedFile("temp"); compressedFile.open(QIODevice::ReadOnly); netManager.post(QNetworkRequest(QUrl("http://mywebsite.com/upload") ), &compressedFile); What seems to happen on the Windows system where I'm developing this is that my Qt application pushes the data from the QFile, but then doesn't complete the request; it seems to be sitting there waiting for more data to show up from the file. The post request isn't "closed" until I manually kill the application, at which point the whole file shows up at my server end. From some debugging and research, I think this is happening because the read() operation of QFile doesn't return -1 when you reach the end of the file. I think that QNetworkAccessManager is trying to read from the QIODevice until it gets a -1 from read(), at which point it assumes there is no more data and closes the request. If it keeps getting a return code of zero from read(), QNetworkAccessManager assumes that there might be more data coming, and so it keeps waiting for that hypothetical data. I've confirmed with some test code that the read() operation of QFile just returns zero after you've read to the end of the file. This seems to be incompatible with the way that the post() method of QNetworkAccessManager expects a QIODevice to behave. My questions are: Is this some sort of limitation with the way that QFile works under Windows? Is there some other way I should be using either QFile or QNetworkAccessManager to push a file via post()? Is this not going to work at all, and will I have to find some other way to upload my file? Any suggestions or hints would be appreciated. Thanks, Don

  • Gateway Page Between ASP and an ASP.NET Page

    I'll admit, I am pretty new with ASP .NET programming and I have been asked to take all our gateway pages (written in classic ASP) and make one universal gateway page to the few C# .NET applications we have (that I wrote). I tried searching here and the web and couldn't find much of anything describing a great way to do this and figured I was either not searching properly or was not properly naming what I am trying to do. I decided to to take one of the main gateway pages we had in classic ASP and use that as a base for my new gateway. Without boring you with a bunch of code I will summarize my gateway in steps and then can take advice/critique from there. EDIT: Basically what I am trying to do is go from a classic ASP page to a ASP .NET page and then back again. EDIT2: If my question is still unclear I am asking if what I have an the right start and if anyone has suggestions as to how this could be better. It can be as generic as need-be, not looking for a specific off-the-shelf code answer. My Gateway page: In the first part of the page I grab session variables and determine if the user is leaving or returning through the gateway: Code (in VB): uid = Request.QueryString("GUID") If uid = "" Then direction = "Leaving" End If ' Gather available user information. userid = Session("lnglrnregid") bankid = Session("strBankid") ' Return location. floor = Request.QueryString("Floor") ' The option chosen will determine if the user continues as SSL or not.   • javascript - shorten string to fit into a certain # of lines

    Hi I have a string that must fit into a box, and must be at most 3 lines long. To shorten it, I plan to truncate it and end it with '...'. I could shorten it to a certain # of characters but if i make it look good with "wwwwwwwww [...] wwww" it won't look right with "iiiiiiiiiii [...] iiii". Is there some way I can shorten it by how much space the string would take up, as opposed to how many characters there are in a string without using a fixed-width font? Mala ps. Please no "simply create an image of '...' and overlay it over the end of the line" hacks or similar - I actually want to shorten the string to the appropriate length

  • latex tabular vertical alignment to top?

    I'm trying to create a simple tabular with two cells of text and two images below them like so: \begin{tabular}[h]{ c | c} \emph{Normal} & \emph{Cone} \\ \includegraphics[width=0.39\textwidth]{images/pipe1} & \includegraphics[width=0.61\textwidth]{images/pipe2} \end{tabular} The first image is shorter than the second and I want it to be aligned at the top of the cell but for some reason it gets aligned to the bottom of the cell instead. I've tried using the array package and do this: \begin{tabular}[h]{ p{0.39\textwidth} | p{0.61\textwidth} } \emph{Normal} & \emph{Cone} \\ \includegraphics[width=0.39\textwidth]{images/pipe1} & \includegraphics[width=0.61\textwidth]{images/pipe2} \end{tabular} But this doesn't change anything. The first image is still aligned to the bottom. Why is that? Could there be something else going on which forces the alignment to stick to the bottom?

  • How to avoid using duplicate savepoint names in nested transactions in nested stored procs?

    I have a pattern that I almost always follow, where if I need to wrap up an operation in a transaction, I do this: BEGIN TRANSACTION SAVE TRANSACTION TX -- Stuff IF @error <> 0 ROLLBACK TRANSACTION TX COMMIT TRANSACTION That's served me well enough in the past, but after years of using this pattern (and copy-pasting the above code), I've suddenly discovered a flaw which comes as a complete shock. Quite often, I'll have a stored procedure calling other stored procedures, all of which use this same pattern. What I've discovered (to my cost) is that because I'm using the same savepoint name everywhere, I can get into a situation where my outer transaction is partially committed - precisely the opposite of the atomicity that I'm trying to achieve. I've put together an example that exhibits the problem. This is a single batch (no nested stored procs), and so it looks a little odd in that you probably wouldn't use the same savepoint name twice in the same batch, but my real-world scenario would be too confusing to post. CREATE TABLE Test (test INTEGER NOT NULL) BEGIN TRAN SAVE TRAN TX BEGIN TRAN SAVE TRAN TX INSERT INTO Test(test) VALUES (1) COMMIT TRAN TX BEGIN TRAN SAVE TRAN TX INSERT INTO Test(test) VALUES (2) COMMIT TRAN TX DELETE FROM Test ROLLBACK TRAN TX COMMIT TRAN TX SELECT * FROM Test DROP TABLE Test When I execute this, it lists one record, with value "1". In other words, even though I rolled back my outer transaction, a record was added to the table. What's happening is that the ROLLBACK TRANSACTION TX at the outer level is rolling back as far as the last SAVE TRANSACTION TX at the inner level. Now that I write this all out, I can see the logic behind it: the server is looking back through the log file, treating it as a linear stream of transactions; it doesn't understand the nesting/hierarchy implied by either the nesting of the transactions (or, in my real-world scenario, by the calls to other stored procedures). So, clearly, I need to start using unique savepoint names instead of blindly using "TX" everywhere. But - and this is where I finally get to the point - is there a way to do this in a copy-pastable way so that I can still use the same code everywhere? Can I auto-generate the savepoint name on the fly somehow? Is there a convention or best-practice for doing this sort of thing? It's not exactly hard to come up with a unique name every time you start a transaction (could base it off the SP name, or somesuch), but I do worry that eventually there would be a conflict - and you wouldn't know about it because rather than causing an error it just silently destroys your data... :-(

  • asp.net postback with jquery?

  • How to only round selected corners in a fancytitle box with Tikz

    If you take a look at http://www.texample.net/tikz/examples/boxes-with-text-and-math/ the boxes there are with rounded corners. In the examples, both the box itself and the title is a box. I want the title box to not have the bottom corners rounded. On page 120 in the manual, there is a description of how to draw with and without rounded corners. However, I want to use this in a fancytitle.   • Encoding in Scene Builder

    I generate an FXML file with Scene Builder. I need it to contain some cirillic text. When i edit this file with Scene Builder i can see normal cirillic letters (screen 1) After compileing and running my program with this FXML file, i'll see not cirillic letters, but some artefacts (screen 2) But, as you can see on the screen 3, its xml file encoding is UTF-8. Also, you can see there that it is saved in ANSI. I've tried to open it with other editors (default eclipse and sublime text 2) and they shoen wrong encoding either. (screen 4 and screen 5) At first i've tried to convert it from ansi to utf-8 (with notepad++). After that eclipse and sublime text 2 started display cirillic letters as they must be. But. Scene builder gave an error, when i've tried to open this file with it: Error loading file C:\eclipse\workspace\equification\src\main\java\ru\igs\ava\equification\test.fxml. C:\eclipse\workspace\equification\src\main\java\ru\igs\ava\equification\test.fxml:1: ParseError at [row,col]:[1,1] Message: Content is not allowed in prolog.     I've a master text file and exceptions file and I want to match all the words in exception file with master file and increase counter, but the trick is with wildcards. I'm able to do without wildcards with this: words = %w(aaa aab acc ccc AAA) stop = %q(/aa./) words.each do |x| if x.match(/aa./) puts "yes for #{x}" else puts "no for #{x}" end end = yes for aaa yes for aab no for acc no for ccc yes for AAA Also which would be the best way to go about this, using arrays or some other way. Edit: Sorry for the confusion. Yes stop has multiple wildcards and I want to match all words based on those wildcards. words = %w(aaa aab acc ccc AAA) stop = %q(aa* ac* ab*) Thanks
