  • Man pages in Linux

    I don't seem to have all the man pages that I need. For example, my college computers (running Fedora 14) have man pages for ASCII, all the standard C libraries (stdlib.h, stdio.h) and so on and so forth. I wish to "install" these pages, after looking up on the Internet I couldn't really find anything that made sense. How can I get, say, the man-page of ASCII (I know it's not really a command or a daemon or anything like that, but typing man ASCII on the college computer gets me a page with the ASCII value table + a little more information). I don't want to keep using the Internet for looking up man pages every time I need to look up a function, function prototype or the ASCII table or something like that.

  • Where did "Open with" (user defined command) go?

    I'm now using Ubuntu 12.04. In earlier versions you could associate a filetype with a specific command (e.g. self-compiled binary) by selecting "Open with" in the file's properties and select the command by providing the file path manually if it wasn't already in the list of applications. Is this possibility gone? The only way I found now is to create .desktop files and edit the mimetypes via an text editor.

  • Include new rows in autofilter range

    I am working with an excel 2007 worksheet that has the "filter" applied so that each column heading has a pull-down menu for sorting. When I add new rows to the end of the table by cut-n-paste from the last row, these new rows are not included in the sorting. I can't seem to get the newly added rows to be included in the filter range. I tried un-selecting and re-selecting the "filter" button and also tried the "reapply" button. The "clear" button is always greyed out. I can't seem to find any relevant help for this online anywhere. Not sure if it matters, but the heading row and the first column are set to be "sticky" (they don't scroll with the rest of the table.)

    I have a win7 on my old Seagate HDD. Recently I installed one new SSD and setup win8 on it. So I have a boot table to choose win7 or win8 to startup. Now when I tried to remove the old one (the Seagate), I can't boot into windows any more. I just have a blinking underscore in boot screen, forever ang forever. I guess the reason is that the boot sector, or boot table (or something like that) was installed on the old HDD. So may someone show me how to boot into my win8 without reinstall the old HDD.

  • Migrating Split Access Database from one domain to another (not working, details in Q)

    Some background: I'm a programmer, not a network administrator, who has been asked to migrate some accounting software (Integrated Office Accounting version 3.2) from an existing domain (OLD_NETWORK) to a new domain (NEW_NETWORK). No-body at the office knows how it works under the hood. It is a split Access 2000 database with the back-end shared and on a file server (which is also the DC) using mapped drives. The DC is NT Server 4 SP 6. The new server is server 2003. The two networks are running independently (ie: two computers on each desk). I have been able to get new computers set up on NEW_NETWORK and working with the IOA software just perfectly but for one problem: The company here uses other entirely separate databases which access the tables IOA maintains (specifically the 'customers' table) via links. To switch between these systems, you press F11 then File-Open the appropriate database and away you go (this is necessary to maintain the permissions that the IOA system uses to protect the customers table). The entire database is Access 2000, the links go to other Access databases, SQL-Server is not involved in any way, nor is a migration to SQL server likely. If I can't migrate anything over, everything will stay as it is, and the NEW_NETWORK computers will not be used. The problem: When I try and update these seperate databases (I shall call one "BANK_ACCOUNT", but the name does not matter), it says "this recordset cannot be updated". It also will sometimes not pull information out of the 'customers' table (ie: date_entered) when looking at a report of everyone who opened a bank account on a certain day (ie: today). I have tried: Giving 'everyone' full control via. shared directory permissions Giving 'everyone' full control on a file system level Checking the permissions within Access (everyone has full read/write on all tables) Copying the entire server contents from one file server to another (ie: xcopy everything) Copying the entire local client files from one computer to another, putting them in the exact same position in the file system, with the same permissons (or full control to 'everyone'). Running as an Administrator Taking one of the NEW_NETWORK computers, having it join OLD_NETWORK and run the software (direct copy from a working system with identical drive mappings), this did not work Weeping openly My Question: Is there anything else I can try? (sorry for this being so long)

But now there is no possibilities to choose other applications than the predefined ones appropriate to the mimetype. How can I define a default application (or a self made script) in nautilus for the x-xfig mimetype?

  • Help With Database Layout

    Hello everyone, I am working on a site similar to Craigslist where users can make postings and sell items in different cities. One difference between my site and Craigslist will be you will be able to search by zip code instead of having all of the cities listed on the page. I already have the ZIP Code database that has all of the city, state, latitude, longitude, and zip code info for each city. Okay, so to dive into what I need done and what I need help with: 1.) Although I have the ZIP Code database, it is not setup perfectly for my use. (I downloaded it off of the internet for free from http://zips.sourceforge.net/) 2.) I need help setting up my database structure (Ex: How many different tables should I use and how should I link them) I will be using PHP and MySQL. These our my thoughts so far on how the database can be setup: (I am not sure if this will work though.) Scenario: Someone goes to the homepage and it will tell them, "Please enter your ZIP Code.". If they enter "17241" for example, this ZIP Code is for a city named Newville located in Pennsylvania. The query would look like this with the current database setup: SELECT city FROM zip_codes WHERE zip = 17241; The result of the query would be "Newville". The problem I see here now is when they want to post something in the Newville section of the site, I will have to have an entire table setup just for the Newville city postings. There are over 42,000 cities which means I would have to have over 42,000 tables (one for each city) so that would be insane to have to do it that way. One way I was thinking of doing it was to add a column to the ZIP Code database called "city_id" which would be a unique number assigned to each city. So for example, the city Newville would have a city_id of 83. So now if someone comes and post a listing in the city Newville I would only need one other table. That one other table would be setup like this: CREATE TABLE postings ( posting_id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, for_sale LONGTEXT NULL, for_sale_date DATETIME NULL, for_sale_city_id INT NULL, jobs LONGTEXT NULL, jobs_date DATETIME NULL, jobs_city_id INT NULL, PRIMARY KEY(posting_id) ); (The for_sale and job_ column names are categories of the types of postings users will be able to list under. There will be many more categories than just those two but this is just for example.) So now when when someone comes to the website and they are looking for something to buy and not sell, they can enter their ZIP Code, 17241, for example, and this is the query that will run: SELECT city, city_id FROM zip_codes WHERE zip = 17241; //Result: Newville 83 (Please note that I will be using PHP to store the ZIP Code the user enters in SESSIONS and Cookies to remember them throughout the site) Now it will tell them, "Please choose your category.". If they choose the category "Items For Sale" then this is the query to run and sort the results: SELECT posting_id, for_sale, for_sale_date FROM postings WHERE for_sale_city_id = $_SESSION['zip_code']; Will this work? So now my question to everyone is will this work? I am pretty sure it will but I do not want to set this thing up and realize I overlooked something and have to start from all over from scratch.
