  • How do I display alternate languages in Interface Builder? (Xcode5)

    - by Anthony F
The iOS project is using Base Localization with localizable strings set up for the Storyboard in English and German. Everything is working properly when I change the language for the simulator, but some of the text is getting truncated in German. I would like to view the German text in Interface builder so that it's easier to fix the constraints on the text labels and fields. It seems like this should just be a view setting or something, but I can't seem to find anything obvious.

  • Ideas for designing an automated content tagging system needed

    - by Benjamin Smith
I am currently designing a website that amongst other is required to display and organise small amounts of text content (mainly quotes, article stubs, etc.). I currently have a database with 250,000+ items and need to come up with a method of tagging each item with relevant tags which will eventually allow for easy searching/browsing of the content for users. A very simplistic idea I have (and one that I believe is employed by some sites that I have been looking to for inspiration (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics.html)), is to simply search the database for certain words or phrases and use these words as tags for the content. This can easily be extended so that if for example a user wanted to show all items with a theme of love then I would just return a list of items with words and phrases relating to this theme. This would not be hard to implement but does not provide very good results. For example if I were to search for the month 'May' in the database with the aim of then classifying the items returned as realting to the topic of Spring then I would get back all occurrences of the word May, regardless of the semantic meaning. Another shortcoming of this method is that I believe it would be quite hard to automate the process to any large scale. What I really require is a library that can take an item, break it down and analyse the semantic meaning and also return a list of tags that would correctly classify the item. I know this is a lot to ask and I have a feeling I will end up reverting to the aforementioned method but I just thought I should ask if anyone knew of any pre-existing solution. I think that as the items in the database are short then it is probably quite a hard task to analyse any meaning from them however I may be mistaken. Another path to possibly go down would be to use something like amazon turk to outsource the task which may produce good results but would be expensive. Eventually I would like users to be able to (and want to!) tag content and to vote for the most relevant tags, possibly using a gameification mechanic as motivation however this is some way down the line. A temporary fix may be the best thing if this were the route I decided to go down as I could use the rough results I got as the starting point for a more in depth solution. If you've read this far, thanks for sticking with me, I know I'm spitballing but any input would be really helpful. Thanks.

  • How do You Come Up With New Ideas?

    - by akdom
Whenever I've come up with a new idea of something interesting to code, it has always been the "Eureka!" moment type deal. How do you come up with great programming ideas, and if you are having trouble coming up with something, how do you get past that block?

  • Rails form helper and RESTful routes

    - by Jimmy
Hey guys, I have a form partial current setup like this to make new blog posts <% form_for([@current_user, @post]) do |f| %> This works great when editing a post, but when creating a new post I get the following error: undefined method `user_posts_path' for #<ActionView::Base:0x6158104> My routes are setup as follows: map.resources :user do |user| user.resources :post end Is there a better way to setup my partial to handle both new posts and editing current posts?

  • Thin & Sinatra not taking port

    - by NekoNova
I'm having problems settig up my application using Thin and Sinatra. I have created a development-config.ru file that contains the following settings: # This is a rack configuration file to fire up the Sinatra application. # This allows better control and configuration as we are using the modular # approach here for controlling our application. # # Extend the Ruby load path with the root of the API and the lib folder # so that we can automatically include all our own custom classes. This makes # the requiring of files a bit cleaner and easier to maintain. # This is basically what rails does as well. # We also store the root of the API in the ENV settings to ensure we have # always access to the root of the API when building paths. ENV['API_ROOT'] = File.dirname(__FILE__) $:.unshift ENV['API_ROOT'] $:.unshift File.expand_path(File.join(ENV['API_ROOT'], 'lib')) $:.unshift File.expand_path(File.join(ENV['API_ROOT'], 'db')) # Now we can require all the gems used for the entire API by simpling requiring # them here. We can also include the classes that we have defined inside the lib # folder. require 'rubygems' require 'bundler' # Run Bundler to setup our gems properly. This will install all the missing gems on # the system and ensure that the deployment environment is ready to run. Bundler.require # To make the loading easier for the application, we will now automatically load all # models that have been defined inside the lib folder. This ensures that we do not need # to load them anymore anywhere else in our application, as the models will be known to # ruby everywhere. Dir.glob(File.join(ENV['API_ROOT'], 'lib', '**', '*.rb')).each{|file| require file} # Now we will configure the Sinatra application so that we can fire up the entire API. # This requires some detailed settings like whether logging is allowed, the port to be # used and some folder locations. require 'sinatra' require 'app' set :logging, true set :dump_errors, true set :port, 3001 set :views, "#{ENV['API_ROOT']}/views" set :public_folder, "#{ENV['API_ROOT']}/public" set :environment, :test # Start up the Sinatra application with all the settings that we have defined. run App.new This is based upon the information I found on the Sinatra website. However, the problem is that I cannot get the application running on port 3001. If I use thin start -R development-config.ru it runs on port 3000. If I use rackup config-development.ru it runs on port 9696. However I never see Sinatra kick in or run over port 3000. My application looks like this: # Author : Arne De Herdt # Email : # This is the actuall application that will be running under Sinatra # to serve the requests for the billing middleware API. # We use the modular approach here to allow control when deploying # the application using Capistrano. require 'sinatra/base' require 'logger' require 'savon' require 'billcrux' class App < Sinatra::Base # This action responds to POST requests on the URI '/billcrux/register' # and is responsible for handeling registration requests with the # BillCrux payment system. # The post "/billcrux/register" do # do stuff end end Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

  • joining relative urls?

    - by heffaklump
So i want to join strings with relative urls in Javascript. base url = "http://www.adress.com/more/evenmore" with relative url = "../../adress" = "http://www.adress.com/adress" relative url = "../adress" = "http://www.adress.com/more/adress" What would be the best way? I was thinking of using regexp and checking how many "../" i find, then subtracting that amount from the baseurl and adding them to what is left.

  • Refactor custom wizard to reduce flicker

    - by Matthew Brown
I have implemented a custom wizard control in C# windows forms by creating a base form which has the shared components and then making child forms for each step of the process. I then have a class which hides/shows the child forms when you move from one step to another. The problem is that flickering is bad when moving between forms. Does anyone know a way to either keep this method and reduce the flicker or refactor it to make it use a single form (which should definitely reduce the flicker)?

  • C# unusual inheritance syntax w/ generics

    - by anon
I happened upon this in an NHibernate class definition: public class SQLiteConfiguration : PersistenceConfiguration<SQLiteConfiguration> So this class inherits from a base class that is parameterized by... the derived class?   My head just exploded. Can someone explain what this means and how this pattern is useful? (This is NOT an NHibernate-specific question, by the way.)

  • Why Emacs/Vim/Textmate? Isn't Xcode good enough?

    - by ivanTheTerrible
Hi I mostly do C++, Objective-C programming. And I found Xcode plus an auto completion/macro plugin (Completion Dictionary) quite adequate. However, all people seem to praise over their pure text editors. I tried Textmate for a bit; liked its simplicity but dislike its files/framework handling. Am I missing something here? Or, do Vim or Emacs have auto-completion as good as Xcode?

  • Is there a substitute for blockproc in Matlab?

    - by SetchSen
I've been using blockproc for processing images blockwise. Unfortunately, blockproc is part of the Image Processing Toolbox, which I don't have on my personal computer. Is there a combination of functions in base Matlab that can substitute for blockproc? My initial guess was to use im2col to transform each block into columns, and then arrayfun to process each column. Then I realized that im2col is also a part of the Image Processing Toolbox, so that doesn't solve my problem.

  • Learn C# now or finish up with Java and then learn C#?

    - by Sahat
Ok here is my situation. I've studied Java in my college for 2 semesters. But you know they teach you jack in there, just the basics. We skipped half of our textbook and even then our professors don't teach from section to section of each chapter. I don't blame them. It's hard as it is for new students to understand even the basic concepts of programming. Now this is a community college we are talking about and not Stanford, MIT or Berkeley. So like I said I've done 2 semester of Java. I really like our textbook because it has some challenging projects to do at the end of each chapter. This textbook is pretty clear and i have no problem understanding it (although 2-D and 3-D Arrays have given me some trouble). I have tried reading a few C# books such as Pro C# 2008 and .NET 3.5 and C# 4.0 in a Nutshell. I found these books to be dry and overloaded with information that put me to sleep (No offense to the authors of those 2 wonderful, according to amazon ratings, books). Would you suggest I finish my Java textbook, brush up my knowledge of Arrays, Polymorphism, and etc that are universal to most programming languages. And then switch to C#, plus the syntax is very similar so it should be easy to switch. Or should I just start learning C# right now from the very beginning? If it's the latter then could you recommend some free online resources that will keep me engaged and at the same time teach me everything I need to know about C#. Someone has recommended me to learn .NET first, but I found it to be not the brightest idea. .NET is just a big monster full of libraries. How am I going to apply it if I don't even know the C# or VB!? Anyway back to my question: Master Java and switch to C# or just go with C#? DISCLAIMER: I don't want to start .NET vs J2EE or C# vs Java flame war. I am going with C#. I've decided that I want to work in a Microsoft shop in the future. .NET is what I want to learn. Thanks! Will be waiting for the answers.

  • How can I make a single WCF method ConcurrencyMode.Multiple when service is ConcurencyMode.Single

    - by Michael Hedgpeth
I have a service which is defined as ConcurrencyMode.Single: [ServiceBehavior(ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Single, UseSynchronizationContext = false, InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession, IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults = true)] public class MyService : IMyService This service provides a method to tell the client what it's currently working on: [OperationContract] string GetCurrentTaskDescription(); Is there a way to make this particular method allowable while another long-running task is running where all other methods still follow the single-threaded concurrency model?

  • effective functional sort

    - by sreservoir
I'm programming a function for a TI-NSpire, so I can't use the builtins from inside a function. What is the most generally efficient algorithm for sorting a list of numbers without modifying the list itself? (recursion and list-splitting are fair game, as is general use of math.)

  • Web development - relative URLs without duplicating files

    - by eshriek
I have a site with index.php in the root folder, images in /img , and overview.php in /content . I have a sidebar.php file that is included in both index.php and overview.php . How should I refer to /img/image.gif if I include a link in each file? The location of image.gif changes relative to the location of the file that references it. Using /img/image.gif in sidebar.php will work in index.php, but it fails for the file located at /content/overview.php. The only solution that I can see is to either include a seperate sidebar.php in each subdirectory, or include an /img directory in every sub-directory. The best suggestion that I can find is to use the <base html tag as suggested here: Change relative link paths for included content in PHP However, in the same link, SamGoody suggests that the <base tag "is no longer properly supported in Internet Explorer, since version 7." I'd like some insight on the matter before committing to a course of action. Thanks. EDIT: I am using the wrong approach below with "../" Example- root/index.php: ... <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css" /> <title>title</title> </head> <body> <?php include('include/header.php'); ?> <?php include('include/menu.php'); ?> ... root/include/header.php: ... <div id="header"> <span class="fl"><img src="img/dun1.png"/></span><span class="fr"><img src="img/dun2.png"/></span> ... root/content/overview.php: ... <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../style.css" media="screen" /> <title>Overview</title> </head> <body> <?php include('../include/header.php'); ?> <?php include('../include/menu.php'); ?> ...
