• POS Desktop Application using DB or Localfiles ? using WPF

  I am planning to build a POS Application for my shop. I have enough knowledge to build the application using DB and also using local files( system.IO - binary files ) to store and access the data for my application. But , i have no deployment experience and confused in choosing data storing option. Database using MDF may be good option ( may ease plenty of coding ) but i don't want to have SQL server on my desktop. as i am using WPF for building , my concern is that my application may get slow due to server response and design rendering of WPF. Then i tried to use only local data (binary files) to store the data and retrive using class and objects. but this coding is taking lot of time , so in the middle of the process i struck in the dilemma of going back to Database . Please help , for performance wise whic one is better . and in Practical World ,in professional applications which one is widely using .. please give suggestions ..

• How to make Mac OS X CrashReporter invoke debugger?

  I have an appache module on Mac OS X that produces random crashes. I can reproduce these crashes with certain sequence of actions, and these crashes produce Crash Reporter dialog "httpd quit unexpectedly". Is there a way to cause Crash Reporter launch debugger (xcode, gdb, anything) instead of just displaying the backtrace? I've tried running httpd under gdb with httpd -X but the crash doesn't happen then - it happens only if many httpd's are running at once, and I found no way to attach gdb to all of them at once. So I was hoping maybe I can cause CrashReporter to attach the debugger when specific process crashes - is there a way to do it?

  Hi, folks, I have a program that repeatedly solves large systems of linear equations using cholesky decomposition. Characterising is that I sometimes need to store the complete factorisation which can exceed about 20 GB of memory. The factorisation happens inside a library that I call. Furthermore, this matrix and the resulting factorisation changes quite frequently and as such the memory requirements as well. I am not the only person to use this compute-node. Therefore, is there a way to start the program under Linux and preallocate free memory for the process? Something like: $: prealloc -m 25G ./program

• xcodeproj merge fails when adding new group

  I'm currently using Xcode with Git, and I'm experiencing some troubles during the merge process of my xcodeproj. Developer1 create a new group in Xcode file arborescence the commit and push. Developer2 on an other computer do the same with an other group name, commit and pull(with merge). The xcodeproj of Developer 2 become unreadable with Xcode. But when I create a new file or just drag and drop files from finder to repository, the merge succeed. Did someone has experienced that kind of trouble? • How would you create a string of all UTF-8 characters? [PHP]

  There are many ways to represent the +1 million UTF-8 characters. Take the latin capital "A" with macron (A). This is unicode code point U+0100, hex number 0xc4 0x80, decimal number 196 128, and binary 11000100 10000000. I would like to create a collection of the first 65,535 UTF-8 characters for use in testing applications. These are all unicode characters up to code point U+FFFF (byte3). Is it possible to do something like a for($x=0) loop and then convert the resulting decimal to another base (like hex) which would allow the creation of the matching unicode character? I can create the value A using something like this: $char = "\xc4\x80"; // or $char = chr(196).chr(128); However, I am not sure how to turn this into an automated process. // fail! $char = "\x". dechex($a). • saving values of editText in replaced fragment

  I have a 2 fragment layout, on the left fragment, i have a list of the different table names, on the right, i open up a different table depending on what is clicked on the right fragment. my intention, is that the first list item is clicked, then values will be entered on the table, next the second list item is clicked, the next table opens up and those values are entered. what would be the best way to store the values of the results entered in the editboxes, so i can process them all at once? I'm sure i can use onPause to save them all, but would that be the best way? Thanks

• iPhone - how to be notified of call completion

  Hi- I'm developing an application that needs to take action on completed phone calls, preferably right after the call ends but minimally once per day. I've read up on the new CoreTelphony framework, and it seems I can get call events if my app is active, but I don't see how to launch/wake my app when a call ends if my app is not the foreground app. I also don't see how any of the new pseudo-background "modes" would allow my app to listen for these events in the background. Do any of you know how this might be done? If post-call processing isn't possible, then I'd like to figure out a way to automatically wake my app up once per day, pull all of the call events since the last wakeup, and process them. I know how I might do this with Push or Local notifications, but my understanding is that those require user action to continue; in this case, I just want the processing to happen automatically. Is there a mechanism that would enable this? Thanks, Dan

• C IPC waiting for child

  So I have a program which creates a child process and executes a command (for example, ls). The parent will then use pipes to send to and get from the child. This works fine when I'm inputting commands myself from the command line. However, when the input comes from a file, it seems like the child doesn't have enough time to run and I get NULL when reading from the pipe - even though there will be information coming from it. Short of using sleep(), is there a better way to make sure the child has run before trying to read from it? Thanks a lot!

  I am sanitizing an input field and manually getting and setting the caret position in the process. Basically I'd like a way to see if the sanitize function has actually replaced a character (and at what index) so then I can adjust the charPosition if necessary. Any ideas?

• Does anyone has the experience of using the new p4 replicate command in their Perforce back-up /rest

  Hi all, we recently performed an upgrade of our whole perforce system to 2009.02 During this exercise, we noticed that the back-up /restore process that was installed here by the Perforce consultant a year ago was not completely working. Basically, the verify command has never worked (scary !). As we are obliged to revisit our Back-Up/Restore scripts, I was toying with the idea of using the new p4 replicate command. The idea is to use it alongside an rsync of the data files, so that in case of crash we will lose at worst an hour of work (if we execute them every hour). Does anyone has the experience or an example of back-up/restore scripts using the p4 replicate command of the 2009.02 version ? Thanks, Thomas

• Preprocess strings file during Xcode build

  Hello, I know there's a way to preprocess my info.plist file, but is there a similar way to process strings files inside my Settings.bundle? My problem: I have an iPhone app and I want the the user to know about the currently installed version. I do this by displaying it in the apps settings. Now every time i change the bundle version in my info.plist i also have to change the version in the Root.strings in the Settings.bundle. I could run a script action that updates it, but it would be nice to use the preprocessor since I could do even more fun things with it. Thanks!

• How do you fix "Too many open files" problem in Hudson?

  We use Hudson as a continuous integration system to execute automated builds (nightly and based on CVS polling) of a lot of our projects. Some projects poll CVS every 15 minutes, some others poll every 5 minutes and some poll every hour. Every few weeks we'll get a build that fails with the following output: FATAL: java.io.IOException: Too many open files java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: Too many open files at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(UNIXProcess.java:148) The next build always worked (with 0 changes) so we always chalked it up to 2 build jobs being run at the same time and happening to have too many files open during the process. This weekend we had a build fail Friday night (automatic nightly build) with the message and every other nightly build also failed. Somehow this triggered Hudson to continuously build every project which failed until the issue was resolved. This resulted in a build every 30 minutes or so of every project until sometime Saturday night when the issue magically disappeared.

  Hi Y'all. I'd like to statistically profile my C code at the instruction level. I need to know how many additions, multiplications, devides, etc,... I'm performing. This is not your usual run of the mill code profiling requirement. I'm an algorithm developer and I want to estimate the cost of converting my code to hardware implementations. For this, I'm being asked the instruction call breakdown during run-time (parsing the compiled assembly isn't sufficient as it doesn't consider loops in the code). After looking around, It seems VMWare may offer a possible solution, but I still couldn't find the specific feature that will allow me to trace the instruction call stream of my process. Are you aware of any profiling tools which enable this?

The current process is to run through a manual script and record how long certain processes take to populate data, it may populate a datagrid, a tree, a list box, etc... It will also need to be able record how long it takes to generate a pdf report. We do not require extremely accurate time just to the nearest second or less than a second. • How to "unbind" a socket programmatically?

• caching in memory on server

  I want to write web app with client Javascript and back-end server (Python). Client needs data from server frequently in AJAX way. Data in DB, and expensive to load for each request. However, in desktop app I would just load data from DB once to memory and then access it. In web app - the server code runs each time for request so I can't do it (each run has to load from DB to memory again). How can this work? Can a single process run on server or do I have to use something different here? An example is like auto-complete here on stackoverflow for tags - how is it implemented in the server for fast caching/loading?

• I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

  Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load. • Can I safely move my project to .NET 4.0?

  I've migrated my project to VS2010 but have not yet targeted .NET 4.0. It's currently targeting 3.5 SP1 (and CLR 2). The project relies on several third party components -- mostly open source -- that were presumably built against the 2.0 CLR. Can I simply retarget my project to the 4.0 runtime? Or do I have to get new versions of all the referenced assemblies on which it depends? I've read a little about the new in-process side-by-side feature of .NET 4.0, but I don't think it applies here (the example I read was about two different .NET plug ins to an office application). My situation is different. My solution directly references assemblies and I wouldn't think side-by-side applies -- unless I don't understand its purpose. TIA

• eclipse wont include/identify user .h files and .o files

  i'm new to eclipse CDT, and try to use an existing .o file that was supplied with the proper .h file. eclipse just wont include it in the compilation process. i tryed drag&drop to the eclipse project browser, and the files did show there, but no use, still "No such file: No such file or directory". i tryed defining the .o file in the: project properties tool settings MinGW C Linker Miscellaneous other objects. didn't work either. as for the header file, i did try a workaround: created a new file in the project and named it after the file i want to include as header, then copied the content. and yet, the compiler/linker didn't recognize the object file. perhaps you can help?thank you
