• The emulator isn't showing the XML contents

  I have been reading Google's android tutorial (link added in the first comment) and I got a problem... In the tutorial they explain the XML elements (EditText and Button) and in the end they say how to tun the program to see the button + the text field. The problem is, that the emulator doesn't show them.. just a black screen. I even tried adding this line to the onCreate function - System.out.println("Hello World!"); but still the emulator is showing only black screen.. • Should GSON ignore varying types if they're not used in a class?

  I'm making an API call that returns JSON which has a particular field which either returns false or a map depending on content. It's a field that I don't care about. I expected GSON to ignore this particular field, though it doesn't seem to be. The object generation fails with the following message: com.google.gson.JsonSyntaxException: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Expected a string but was BEGIN_OBJECT at line 1 column 403560 I've seen this particular question (Gson deserialize json with varying value types). I want to make sure I need to make a custom deserializer before doing so. I'm wondering if I may have another issue. edit: Example: "anonymous_flag": { } vs "anonymous_flag": "yes" Another Edit: I actually had the field in my model object... I was referencing the wrong class. Judge away :)

• Is there any conflict between NFS and calling getFD().sync()?

  My boss is worried that our NFS file system will not be happy with the jboss run java process calling getFD().sync on the files we are writing. We have noticed that frequently the time stamp on the created file is minutes (sometimes as many as 15 minutes) after the log claims the file was finished writing. My only guess is that the NFS is hanging on to the file in memory and not writing it till it feels like it. sync should solve that probelm, right? I also noticed that there is never a close() called on the file. Wondering if that could have been the cause as well? any thoughts appreciated.

• How do you compare music data

  i want to write an app to rename sort and organize my music library (mp3's, wav's, flac's). I wanted to take a portion of the song, say the first minutes, and compare that to a database and then retrieve the song name and tag information. I have heard that you can do this with last.fm but a look through their api info didn't help. My question is, what is this called so i can google it better? nothing i am trying is helping much. This would be similar to the shazam android app. My prefered language would be java, so i can run it on a few operating systems easier, but that might be subject to change depending on how i can do it. • Weblogic 10.3 domain unpacking problem

  Hi, I'm trying to unpack a Weblogic 10.3 domain on one of our production servers (SunOS 5.10), but get the following error: $ /opt/bea10/wlserver_10.3/common/bin/unpack.sh -template=/tmp/CM.jar -domain=/opt/bea10/user_projects/CM Error: failed to create the temporary script file Assuming that this is a priviledge problem: where actually the unpack utility tries to create its temporary script files? The unpack script calls a Java class com.bea.plateng.domain.script.Unpacker, so reading the script itself does not reveal the location. I need to ask the sysadmin for the priviledges, so an exact directory location is needed. Of course, the error message is so vague that this might also be some other issue. Any ideas? BR, Marko P.S. Sorry for cross-posting. I tried this question also on Serverfault but got no replies. Perhaps programmers (like myself) do this kind of stuff anyway.

  I am trying to understand interfaces in Java and have this task to do which I am a stack with. It must be something easy, but I don't seem to see the solution. Interface contains a few methods, one of them should return true if all elements of this set are also in the set. I.e. public interface ISet{ //some methods boolean isSubsetOf(ISet x); } Then the class: public class myClass implements ISet{ ArrayList<Integer> mySet; public myClass{ mySet = new ArrayList<Integer>(); } //some methods public boolean isSubsetOf(ISet x){ //method body } } What do I need to write in method body? How do I check that the instance of myClass is a subset of ISet collection? • Warning vs. error

  I had an annoying issue, getting a "Possible loss of precision" error when compiling my Java program on BlueJ (But from what i read this isn't connected to a specific IDE). I was surprised by the fact that the compiler told me there is a possible loss of precision and wouldnt let me compile/run the program. Why is this an error and not a warning saying you might loose precision here, if you don't want that change your code? The program runs just fine when i drop the float values, it wouldn't matter since there is no point (e.g [143.08, 475.015]) on my screen. On the other hand when i loop through an ArrayList and in this loop i have an if clause removing elements from the ArrayList it runs fine, just throws an error and doesn't display the ArrayList [used for drawing circles] for a fraction of a second. This appears to me as a severe error but doesn't cause (hardly) any troubles, while i wouldn't want to have such a thing in my code at all. What's the boundary?

  I am searching for a tool/framework that follows the naked objects pattern and is written in Java. I know about tools like for instance JMatter, Naked Objects and Domain Object Explorer. That's not exactly what I am searching for, though. Open source would be great, but doesn't need to be. My intention is to use that tool/framework for the purpose of model-driven software development to do the modeling part. Ideally, such a tool/framework would provide the option to use JPA to store/load objects.

• How to analyse Dalvik GC behaviour?

  I am developing an application on Android. It is a long running application that continuously processes sensor data. While running the application I see a lot of GC messages in the logcat; about one every second. This is most probably because of objects being created and immediately de-referenced in a loop. How do I find which objects are being created and released immediately? All the java heap analysis tools that I have tried(*) are bothered with the counts and sizes of objects on the heap. While they are useful, I am more interested in finding out the site where temporary short-lived objects get created the most. (*) I tried jcat and Eclipse MAT. I couldn't get hat to work on the Android heap-dumps; it complained of an unsupported dump file version.

  Hey Guys, I have made one project in java. Now in this particular module, i am showing the user , so i am showing them a stock inventory. Now for doing this. As you will see in the screen shot [ i have put screenshot so you can understand well ]. To show the images , i have made one table and i have put labels in that and then i am setting the icon at the label. Now as soon as user click on the any image, then that image i put on big label. But this works perfect on mouse click but client want that , if user navigate the by keyboard arrow keys then in same should be happen. Means : User navigate by key board then it should reflect on that table [user should know that which is currently seleted ] and then as soon as the user navigate by key board arrow events and then click enter then that image should reflect on big label. It's just that I'd like to refine my question during my investigation and it's hard to do it in stackoverflow structure on the same question (maybe on purpose). Anyway, in continuation to this thread http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2843218/problem-configure-jboss-to-work-with-jndi2 I discovered that when running an application that is deployed on my JBoss 4.2.3.GA, when I perform: Context initialContext = new InitialContext(); Object dataSource = initialContext.lookup("java:/DefaultDS"); I get null as a return value even though DefaultDS is the default datasource that comes with Jboss installation. and generally, how come initialContext return null value? if the datasource is not found it should throw NamingException and in other case it should return real object. What can I do with null? isn't it a bad error handling of javax.naming.InitialContext ???

The next step is to package that program and deploy it to an application server. Some clients program will submit requests to the server who will call the tool that I wrote. Lately, we will add more tools to the server and he has to dispatch the requests to the right tool. Which application server fits my needs ? I have looked for Tomcat, Jetty and Glassfish but it seems that they are only used for web application. Is it possible to use those servers in some context different from web context? • Copying a 2D non-space array to another

  I'm a total programming newb who started learning java programming this sem at uni. I'm up to a step where i need to copy some elements from one method to another. This program i'm creating is called an L_Game. The question I'm stuck is: the project(Slide other) method should take another slide as a parameter, and copy each non-space cell from this slide into the other slide (i.e. like a projector projecting slides onto a screen. I previously made a constructor with the parameter cells in it and believe i copied it to the project(Slide other) method. But i'm not sure what to do to copy each "non-space cell" With the "for" method or the "if" method? If my question isn't typed correctly or have information missing, please let me know. Any help will be appreciated. (I obviously have no idea with what i'm doing...)

  We're currently in the process of looking for an online payment service that will allow us to accept credit cards, etc. However, our business model also involves revenue sharing in a model similar to that of iTunes. That is, content creators will be able to sell content through our site and we take a small percentage of the revenue. Can anyone recommend an online payment service that supports this model? We're also interested in: Accept all major credit cards Being able to do international transactions in the appropriate local currency Recurring transactions (monthly, yearly, etc.) Additionally, if the service provided a Java API for integration or the ability to broker PayPal transactions that would be an added bonus. I know Amazon provides a hosted payment service, but I'd prefer not to require all of our customers to have an Amazon account. That provides an additional barrier to entry that we'd prefer to avoid. • Multimap Space Issue: Guava

  In my Java code, I am using Guavas Multimap (com.google.common.collect.Multimap) by using this: Multimap< Integer, Integer Index = HashMultimap.create() Here, Multimap key is some portion of URL and value is another portion of URL (converted into integer). Now, I assign my JVM 2560 Mb (2.5 GB) heap space (by using Xmx and Xms). However, it can only store 9 millions of such (key,value) pairs of integers (approx 10 million). But, theoretically (according to memory occupied by int) it should store more. Can anybody help me, 1) Why is this happening (means Multimap is taking lots of space) ? I checked my code with out inserting pairs in Multimap, it takes only 1/2 MB space. 2) Is there any other way or home-baked solution to solve this space issue ? More clearly, how to solve this memory issue ? Thanks in advance and any idea is perfectly OK for me.

• JBoss, exploded jar vs compact jar.

  Hi, I am working on Java 1.6, JBoss 5.1, EJB 3, and Hibernate 2. Every time I deploy the ear, if the jar is a compact one (non-exploded), application doesn't work. However when I explode the jar and then add it to the ear, the app works fine. Tried restarting Jboss, doesn't help. The ear refers to numerous external jars; would the order of loading the jars be an issue? How can I make JBoss load external jars followed by the app jars? Thx. WM.

• How can creating the SessionFactory become slow after updating Hibernate?

  In my Java SE application I used Hibernate 3.4 and creating the SessionFactory took about 5 seconds. Today I updated to Hibernate 3.5.1 and suddenly it takes over a minute. What can be the cause of such a dramatic effect? I tried different things the better part of the day and I have no clue... Some data I collected According to the profiler the most time is spent in PersisterFactory.createClassPersister and in that method ProxyFactory.createClass takes the most time. The log shows nothing unusual Changing hibernate.bytecode.use_reflection_optimizer makes no difference

• Getting print data - Windows (Redmon)

  I am trying to develop an app to retrieve print data, edit its content and then print the data. I am using RedMon for that purpose. But all the tutorials I have seen online as of now relates to storing the data into a PDF using RedMon. I want to be able to configure RedMon on a windows platform such that it writes the entire print data(the data that is bound to appear on the printing paper) as it is into a .txt file or maybe provide directly as an input to the java app that I have made. I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution for this till now. Is this achievable?
