• Localizing a JSF 1.2 application with UTF-8 resources

  (WARNING: this is my first java application, coming from .NET, so don't bash me if I write too much garbage) I'm developing a simple JSF 1.2 web application which should support Russian, Chinese, and other languages outside ISO 8859-1, which is automatically used in Properties.load(). Is there a way to use the Properties loaded from XML files, with Properties.loadFromXml(), inside JSF, without writing too much code? I know there are alternative ways to do so (writing my own loader, escaping the characters...), but I'd really love to find a simple solution, and I don't see it in all the forums I checked. • JFileChooser returns incorrect path in OS X (folders only mode)

  I have a problem in java swing where the user has to select a folder, so I am using the code below. JFileChooser fc = new JFileChooser(); fc.setFileSelectionMode(JFileChooser.DIRECTORIES_ONLY); if(fc.showDialog(singleton, SELECT) == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) { File folder = fc.getSelectedFile(); String path = folder.getPath() + File.separatorChar + MYAPPFOLDER; } Now there are 2 ways a user may select the folder Navigate to the folder and select the folder Navigate to the folder, go into the folder, and click select Both ways work fine on windows but on OS X, I get If I do 1 : path = Users/<username>/Desktop/MYAPPFOLDER If I do 2 : path = Users/<username>/Desktop/Desktop/MYAPPFOLDER How do I avoid this 2nd case? • Creating immutable objects from javabean

  Hi All, I am involved in this project where we are building on good bit of legacy code. I have a particular situation about one big java bean object which has to be transferred over wire. So my first thought was to make it immutable and serializable to do the trick .At this point I am faced with a few difficult choices :- 1 Ideally I want some way to automatically generate an immutable, serializable version of this class. I dont have the scope to refactor or alter this class in any way and i would really really hate to have to copy paste the class with a different name ?? 2 Assuming that i gave up on 1 i.e i actually chose to duplicate code of the HUGE javabean class , i still will be in the unsavoury situation of having to write a constructor with some 20-25 parameters to make this class immutable. what is a better way to make a class immutable other than constructor injection ??   I want to write an xsd for the xmlrpc spec (and generate java classes out of it using jaxb). The xmlrpc spec allows values like: <value><int>123</int></value> <value><boolean>1</boolean></value> But at the same time it requires: If no type is indicated, the type is string. Which means i could receive something like this: <value>test123</value> which is equivalent to <value><string>test123</string></value> Is there a way to define this in an xsd.

Why programmer set the variable as private then write , getter and setter to access it. • Interactive Charts for web application

  We are working on a web based application (implemented in JAVA) on commodity prices and one part of it is interactive charting. I provide a simplified example here. We have a table in Mysql database where we have information on commodity prices in US states and counties. One aspect of the application is to create interactive plots based on user choice. For example, if the user needs to see the price density in Oregon and Linn county then she chooses it from the menu in a webpage and it is rendered on fly with accompanying quantile information in a table. As the user changes state and county these plots and table change on fly.For our computational need we are using R (and use rjava to integrate it to our web application) and I know that if interactivity is not an issue this is a piece of cake in ggplot2, but I am not aware of any interactive version of R graphics framework (like lattice, ggplot2). We are exploring google visualization API but I am not sure we can have the statistical power we need in some of the plots.Please help.

  I am contemplating writing my first blackberry app. I am fundamentally, a C/C++ programmer (not Java), can anyone provide some guidelines on the quickest route (i.e. shallowest learning curve) to writing a blackberry app? Any resources/links would be useful. As an aside: In an ideal world, I would like to write once and deploy for both Blackberry and the iPhone, but since I am targetting largely business people, I guess blackberry should be my target - right? Is it possible to write once and deploy on BOTH iphone and BB?

• URLEncode Error

  I have an Android app. Basically what it does is that user can search a car reference no. in EditText for example:- 270/30 and retrieve all the details of the particular car with the same column value in the database. I'm encoding this editext value in Android using URLEncoder and decoding it back in php webservice code. But the decoded value im getting is 027/13 ....instead of 270/30. To make it clear more im here by pasting my java Encoding part EditText SearchField=(EditText)findViewById(R.id.editText1); String SearchValue= SearchField.getText().toString(); Now the encoding code in Asynctask is data +="&" + URLEncoder.encode("data", "UTF-8") + "="+SearchValue; Now the PHP part where i decoded this code $data = urldecode($_POST['data']); Please help me how to encode/decode this given format ...   Hello! I have a general question concerning client-server design. We have a Java server with Spring, a GWT client program and some HTTP-servlets for our site. At the moment we also want to develop an applet which would communicate with that server in such a way GWT-client and site requests do. Is it a good idea to communicate with the server from applet by RMI? I.e. to create some Remote services, register them with Spring and call them from applet? Thanks in advance!

  I am planning to make a online-multiplayer game with my friends. The game is a browser card game (so, players act in turns) and players could host rooms in a lobby. Flex + actionscript will be used to write for the client side. We are discussing what should be used for the server side. I suggested C#/Java and my friend suggested PHP. • building an XML service parsing library

  This is more of a design question I suppose. My company offers a web service to our client that spits data out in a custom xml format. I'd like to build a java library we can offer so our customers can just feed it the url and we will turn it into a set of POJOs built from the response. I can obviously just create a library that will do some simple xml parsing and building of the POJOs but I'm looking to build something a bit more robust. My brain is pulling me in a million directions, wondering if anyone has some pointers or some code to poke at. Was thinking about adding an Abdera extension, but it's not really a syndication format that fits the Abdera model. And most of the popular service libraries (twitter, facebook) all rely on standards format parsers, of which our format isn't.

• Language neutral plugin architectures

  I am looking at extending an existing application through the use of a plugin architecture. The application id written in Delphi, but I want to be able to implement various plugins in whatever language is best of the job. Currently we have skills in Delphi, C# and Java, and would like to be able to implement a plugin in whatever language is required. Does anyone know of an example system that can be used to implement this ? I am assuming that I could standardise on a particular COM interface and anything that implements that interface could be a plugin. Does anyone have any pointers ? Thanks

What is the huge benefit I'm missing here? If they had just used compareTo I could just had replaced Comparable with Ordered in my code and be done.

• Need suggestions on which web frameworks to use?

  I want to build a site where people can create their personal websites quickly. All their websites will be hosted on my single web application (i.e. there will be only one database which contains info of all the websites). Each person will have an account where he can customize his website (template, content etc.). They can access their website from .mysite.com or mysite.com/xyz. I should be able to add different modules frequently, which will immediately reflect in all the websites created through my site. Based on the above requirements, please suggest me if there are any frameworks to use which can ease my job. Also suggest me which language to use (php or java). Which one would be better.

• Is it bad practice to use Reflection in Unit testing?

  During the last years I always thought that in Java, Reflection is widely used during Unit testing. Since some of the variables/methods which have to be checked are private, it is somehow necessary to read the values of them. I always thought that the Reflection API is also used for this purpose. Last week i had to test some packages and therefore write some JUnit tests. As always i used Reflection to access private fields and methods. But my supervisor who checked the code wasn't really happy with that and told me that the Reflection API wasn't meant to use for such "hacking". Instead he suggested to modifiy the visibility in the production code. Is it really bad practice to use Reflection? I can't really believe that

  I just started exploring Java Servlets and JSP and am a little confused about the sessions object. • Jump-To-Code-Line Eclipse Shortcuts

  Hello, is it possible, in Eclipse, to mark certain lines with Shortcuts and be able to quickly jump to those lines? Example: Let's say I have maintenanceHeavyMethod() at line 120 in my class, gameLoop() at line 800 and some listener at line 1460. I'd like to f.ex. press CTRL-SHIFT-1, 2, 3 etc. to mark those positions, and then use f.ex. CTRL-1, 2, 3 to immediately jump to them. I don't like split-screens etc, but I need to jump around when writing. Is there such a feature? I'm using latest Eclipse to write Java-programs.

  I need a singleton in my code. I implemented it in Java and it works well. The reason I did it, is to ensure that in a mulitple environment, there is only one instance of this class. But now I want to test my Singleton object locally with a Unit test. For this reason I need to simulate another instance of this Singleton (the object that would be from another device). So is there a possiblity to instantiate a Singleton a second time for testing purpose or do I have to mock it? I'm not sure, but I think it could be possible by using a different class loader?

• what happen if I delete the xx.jar file after I started to execute the xx.jar

  I have a server program running a java binary code (xx.jar file) While it is running I erranously delete the xx.jar file. The program continues to run. But I am not sure if the results will be correct, and I am not sure if the program will fail? When I delete the xx.jar file, the program was in a method for a long time and still it is in that method call. When it calls another method call will my program fail? I am asking this question because If deleting the file has no harm I will be gaining about 3-4h on a server machine

I'm not sure why it's not working. In the NativeExtensionContext which extends FREContext I am passing the activity using getActivity() to NativeActivity. Everything works well but I get a "Nullpointerexception" or “android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window — token null is not for an application” when I try I try to get a reference to the Context. Anyone with experience using Adobe AIR Native Extensions and/or Android Java would be great.

  I am trying to copy files from one folder to another using the FileUtils method "static void copyDirectory(File srcDir, File destDir)" from apache commons io (2.4) with the following code: String srcDir = "/sourceDirectory/examples/"; String destDir = "/tmp/examples/"; try{ FileUtils.copyDirectory(new File(srcDir), new File(destDir)); } catch (IOException e){ e.printStackTrace(); } The file structure looks like the following: examples/ (read access) examples/.subdirectory (NO access) examples/file1.txt (read access) examples/file2.txt (read access) examples/subdirectory2/file1.txt (read access) examples/subdirectory2/file2.txt (NO access) The problem is, that in srcDir there are a few files and one subdirectory I don't have access to. FileUtils.copyDirectory throws an "java.io.FileNotFoundException: .subdirectory (Permission denied)" and aborts. Is it possible to ignore those files I don't have permission to and just copy all the other files I can read?
