• How do I manipulate the Url of my Silverlight testpage.aspx?

  I am making an XNA game using Silverlight over the web. My testpage.aspx is linked to from a previous page where the client selects certain elements. The testpage.aspx URL changes depending on what I have sent to it. Now in my mainpage.cs file I would like to call certain functions depending on what was passed, but I am unsure how to manipulate or even access the URL. Is there a specific class in the Silverlight library I can use? Thank you for your time.

• What is the most complicated data structure you have used in a practical situation?

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

• Breaking in to Programming

  I've noticed that there is a gap between getting formal education in computer science as a student and entry-level/junior programming jobs. Obviously entry-level programming requires that you know some programming but how much do you need to break in? I'm in a QA non-coding role with basically a minor in CS, looking to improve my own programming skills to eventually switch industries. However I'm completely at a loss as to what I should be focusing on learning and am curious as to the steps other people have taken to get experience post-undergrad.

• How to design console application with good seperation of UI from Logic

  Is it considered an overkill for console application to be design like MVC , MVP or N tier architecture? If not which is more common and if you can link me to simple example of it. I want to implement a tic tac toe game in console application. I have a solution which hold two projects: TicTacToeBusinessLogic (Class library project) and TicTacToeConsoleApplication (Console application project) to represent the view logic. In the TicTacToeConsoleApplication I've Program.cs class which holds the main entry point (public static void Main). Now I face a problem. I want the game to handle its own game flow so I can: Create new GameManager class (from BL) but this causing the view to directly know the BL part. So I'm a little confused how to write it in an acceptable way. Should I use delegates? Please show me a simple example.

• Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

  I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP. • Attach Keyboard/Mouse to X Display in Dell XPS L502x Dual Video Cards (Intel/Nvidia HDMI)

  The idea: Use a second monitor in Dell XPS L502x with HDMI port in Ubuntu 12.04 The process: I connect the HDMI cable to monitor. I read this and I have video in HDMI monitor with Bumblebee and this commands: optirun nvidia-settings -c :8 DISPLAY=:8.0 firefox I have created a second keyboard/mouse master group with xinput with this solution. The problem: The second monitor (Display 8) doesn't recognize the keyboard/mouse and I cant use it. The question: Do you know some command to attach the keyboard/mouse master group to Display 8? I think that xinput -set-cs may work but it does not.

  Imagine that you're interviewing a brilliant CS grad. He's just finished school, has very high grades, and has been performing very well on the interview so far. You reach a point near the end, where you're starting to speak about terms of employment, salary, etc.., and you're trying to show off the environment he'll be working in. When you mention that programmers at your company have systems with two monitors, the interviewee stops you and informs you that he won't need a computer. He only ever writes code by hand, in a note-book, and relies on his phone for sending/receiving email. This is not something he's willing to budge on. Would you still hire him? What I have come to know from my googling is that I must have a domain(.com/.net/.co) and a host(for my web pages .aspx & .cs(confusion here if I can also deploy my database)). • What is the biggest weakness of students graduating with degrees in Computer Science?

  This question is directed more toward employers and graduate student advisors/professors but all opinions are welcome. What do you find is a common weakness of new hires and/or new grad students? Is it entirely variable dependent on the student and his or her university? Is there a particular skill or skillset that you wish new hires/researchers had expertise in and how can we remedey this deficiency? I realize that this question is general and really encapsulates two questions, one more about the weaknesses of new software engineers and one about the weaknesses of new researchers. However, both types of people tend to come from similar courses of study so I'm wondering if there is any overlap. Note: I am not a professor but I'm interested in how best to revise the undergraduate curriculum in CS.

• How to get the Dash and HUD to appear. (and stop Unity spewing error messages.)

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my wifes Dell Inspiron 1501, which uses an R300 ATI graphics chip. Neither the Dash or HUD appear when pushing the appropriate key. When I try unity --reset & in the terminal, I see that over and over it's spitting out: r300: CS space validation failed. (not enough memory?) Skipping rendering. This is just after starting Ubuntu with no apps open, so I find it hard to believe that just rendering the Dash / HUD is completely blowing out the VRAM. • Is this the correct way to implement .NET MVC website structure?

  I have recently seen a .NET MVC solution in which the markup in the .aspx views have a Controller as their model, and the .ascx user controls they contain use a separate model. I'm new to MVC and I wanted to find out about a few things I'm not clear on. An example of how the code is implemented: UserDetails.aspx view has markup that shows it's using the UserDetailsController.cs as the model. It contains RenderPartial("User_Details.ascx", UserDetailsModel) and passes it the UserDetailsModel. Is this the standard/correct way of implementing MVC? Or just one way to implement it? I also noticed that the classes used as Models appear to be Service classes that have [DataMember] and [DataContract] attributes on the class name and properties - what is the advantage of this implementation?

• DirectCompute information

  I've been trying to make use of the GPU as part of a project of mine. I've looked into both CUDA and OpenCL, but the lack of information showing you how to introduce these into a project is shocking. Even their dedicated forum groups are dead. So now, I'm looking into DirectCompute. From what I can tell, it's simply a new type of shader file that makes use of HLSL. My question is this, does my program (aside from being DirectX 10 / 11 ) need its structure changed? I mean, is it simply a case of creating the CS file, setting in the project like I would any other shader, and watch the magic happen? Any information on this would be appreciated.

• $ON_USER returning root instead of $USER

  Hello everybody! With Natty coming out soon, I've been at work updating my deployment and self-config script to make my desktop on 11.04 run and look the way I want it to. One bummer is that dbus seems to have changed and does not permit, in the same manner Lucid and Maverick did, the authentication of the current user by terminal call using grep and cat. Ideally, to run the script, I would sudo -s and then launch it as # chmod +x install && ./install Instead of returning my user name.. it now returns root and applies changes to the root profile and aborts whenever paths do not correspond.   Start with an array of arrays; in this case, they are different lengths in order to demonstrate the technique, but they do not have to be. [[1,2,3,4], [5,6,7], [8,9,10], [11,12,13,14,15]] At the other end of the transformation, you have an array of arrays where the first array contains the first element from each of the original arrays, the second array contains the second element from each of the original arrays, and so on. [[1,5,8,11], [2,6,9,12], [3,7,10,13], [4,14], [15]] Is there a mathematical or CS term for this operation?

  I want to become a more skilled programmer. I also want to do it through Objective-C and iOS. What websites or programs that you know of have problems that I can solve (with the answers)? I have failed some programming tests for jobs (such as "Given 2 values in a Binary Tree - how do you find the lowest common ancestor?) and I want to become a better engineer. I have developed 54 iOS/Android apps to date, but my core CS Skills apparently are rusty/bad. I have looked at TopCoder - but there aren't very many competitions going on, the website is terrible, and there does not appear to be anything that really supports Objective-C/iOS Websites?

• Is Carnegie Mellon (CMU) a Javaschool? Are any prominent universities in the US javaschools? [on hold]

  I'm guessing CMU would teach C and other unmanaged languages (their course listing shows Principles of Functional Programming as a required course for a BSCS), but it's hard to tell from course listings. I'm looking into applying there, where I have an OK chance of getting in , as well as some other mid-to high tier CS schools. I'm wondering how you can tell if a school mainly teaches Java or goes into C/C++. Everyone says (and I agree, from my current programming knowledge) that learning Java in college exclusively is a bad idea, so I'm hoping to avoid ending up at a 'Javaschool.'

  There are some job requirements of project management experience for a programmer, such as: the candidate has to have some experience managing a project, not necessarily with subordinates, but rather having worked on a project all the way from design down to test. I was wondering what "subordinates" mean here? if there are some books, webpages or elsewhere with both general guideline and simple practical sample projects to help one get some basics about the whole process of a project. I am particularly interested in projects for both Linux and Windows, in C, C++, Python, Java. I am considering to start by playing on my own, not eager to find a company yet. My major was not CS, so I might lack the basics.

• To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

  Before anyone jumps into any conclusion, I had a discussion with a friend (who's not a programmer at all) about the relationship between a person's neatness habit and the degree of neatness generally shown in works by the same person. This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?

  Hi everybody. I'm a first year student in CS and I absolutely love programming. Many people have told me it isn't so good once you start working. Some things like bringing your work home(thinking about how to solve problems), working many hours when the timeline reaches an end an so on. I've heard being a system administrator is a lot less stressing job, since you don't have to worry about it at home.
