    If I'm building a library in ruby, what's the best way to allow users of the library to set module-wide settings that will be available to all sub classes etc of the library? A good example would be if I'm writing a library for posting to a webservice: TheService::File.upload("myfile.txt") # Uploads anonymously TheService::Settings.login("myuser","mypass") # Or any other similar way of doing this TheService::File.upload("myfile.txt") # Uploads as 'myuser' The idea would be that unless TheService::Settings.logout is called then all TheService operations would be conducted under myuser's account. Any ideas?

    I want to move my application settings out of XAML and into a config file. For example, ToolTips and Content strings for Buttons/CheckBoxes and Labels. Is this the job of a ResourceDictionary, or should I use the App.Config or Settings.settings file? The ToolTips and Content strings are not really per user, they are more Application wide and may change if the UI is internationalized. Thanks!

    I need a shortcut (typical shortcut file, script, special exe, doesn't matter) for PC Settings in Windows 8. I see that PC Settings is an executable named SystemSettings.exe, found in C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel. However, creating a shortcut to it doesn't work. The same if I try to run this executable from the Command Prompt, for example. Any ideas on how to create such a shortcut? Any idea, no matter how crazy, is appreciated. Thanks!

  • repair window-xp - access denied for "document and settings" through command line

    hi, i'm trying to repair my windows xp and it fails to reboot (bad sector or something). i'm using my dell recovery disk and then select the "Repair" option which takes me to the command line application when i can browse my files and folders (like with cmd.exe). however, when i'm trying to access the "Documents and settings" folder, it gives me access denied. is there any way to override it? is there any other way to access my documents and settings through other method? I'm just trying to recover some files and copy them to another drive on my computer and then reinstall my winxp. Thanks for the help

    I'm using Ubuntu, as many proxy applications, GNOME Network Proxy Preferences only allow to ignore hosts. What I want to do is exactly the opposite. I only want to use the proxy for few sites. Is it possible to define only the allowed hosts in any way? PS: I know FoxyProxy add-on for Firefox does this, but 1)I don't use Firefox and 2)I want the proxy settings system wide not only for browser.

  • Are nvidia drivers necessary?

    The new Ubuntu 14.04 comes with nvidia driver options. My system(Dell XPS) uses nvidia-331. For starters it messed up my text font size. It is so freakishly small with nvidia drivers on. So my question is: Are these drivers really necessary? What performance gain do they provide? Will it help me save some battery life? Basically what are these drivers doing that I was missing before (with nouveau I guess)?

  • Changing swappiness in sysctl.conf doesn't work for me

    I'm using 12.04 LTS and can sudo sysctl to set swappiness to 10, but adding vm.swappiness=10 to sysctl.conf doesn't work for me - after I reboot, swappiness still reports 60 (default) I'd like to be able to reduce swaps to my SSD, but can't find a way to do so except manually per session. Modifying sysctl.conf seems to work for most - can anyone advise what I need to check / change to make it work for me too, please?

    I had many folders and filters and mail in general in Evolution on my previous Ubuntu install, which I thought would be available for me for I had backed up my home directory. I have copied now Evolution related folders to my new home directory, and Evolution is not showing either the folders I had or any of the filters. To be more precise, I have copied the mail folder to ~/.config/evolution/ but that hasn't changed anything, as I said.

  • Ubuntu 12.10 Screensaver/blanking problem

    I have upgraded to 12.10 and then downgraded again to 12.04 LTS because of the screensaver or screen blanking problem. After 10-12 minutes the screen goes black/blank when i dont do anything (idle). I have tried setting in the Brightness and Lock menu that the screen should never lock or turn off if idle. This is very annoying when watching movies etc... Would be nice if someone knows this.... Thanks...

    I don't know how to make the title any more clear. Let me give an example - When I want to add an image to an article on my blog, I click "Browse" button in the image uploader, and then upload the image to the blog. The problem is, when I want to upload another image to my blog, I want the browser to look into the same directory; but it's always takes me to the "Recently Used" directory. Is there a way to change this? I hope I have made myself clear enough. EDIT: I only use Chrome, so I am referring to it.

  • ThinkPad TrackPoint Buttons Not Working Well

    The TrackPoint itself works fine. But the three buttons below the spacebar don't. For example if I were to copy these lines, 1-10, using trackpoint buttons it'd start highlighting at 7. If I use the main TrackPad (the part every laptop) and it's buttons it works normal, 1-10: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 It's like the button doesn't register right away. I use the TrackPoint ALL the time. I love it and I don't think I can go back to the normal TrackPad, so is there anyway to fix this? An app or setting? Also, the middle button to scroll isn't working at all I tried: Middle Button on ThinkPad Not Working with 10.10 update And put it in /usr/share/... and /usr/lib... neither seem to work. They USED to work. I used to be able to use that method of fixing it, but it seems in 11.04 this doesnt work? I dont wanna give up on Ubuntu yet...

  • Ubuntu 13.04 boot into black screen, even after installing nvidia drivers, fail at: "Starting Reload cups, upon starting avahi-daemon..."

    I got a new machine with i7 4770k and gefore gtx660. I installed windows and then installed Ubuntu 13.04. In the installation everything went well, after the installation I again boot from the USB and choose try ubuntu, and installed boot-repair because windows automatically boot with no option for ubuntu. After I repaired the boot, I restarted and got into grub, when I chose Ubuntu I got message saying I'm running on low graphics mode and when I pressed ok the screen turned off. I couldn't do anything so I restarted and after reading this post: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? I got into recovery, selected dpkg and repaired packages. Then I rebooted, and tried to press 'e' and change quiet splash to no splash and nomodeset but unfortunately both of them didn't work, and not the screen didn't get turned off, but I just saw a blank screen. So I rebooted again, entered the recovery, and this time I went to the root shell, and tried to install nvidia drivers from this guide here: http://www.howopensource.com/2012/10/install-nvidia-geforce-driver-in-ubuntu-12-10-12-04-using-ppa/ I rebooted and got the same black screen again (the screen didn't go off, just saw a blank screen). In the grub I see that the kernel is 3.8.0-25. I also checked that the usb files are not corrupted using the check CD from the ubuntu installation screen. I'm really frustrated, I don't know what else can I do. (If someone also knows how can I connect to wifi using the root shell it will be very appreciated, because when I choose the 'enable networking' it again booting me to a black screen.     Mostly I use my laptop in an environment where different wireless networks are available and I would like to preferably connect to one of those and only fall back to the other one if that one is not available. Is there any way of prioritizing which wireless networks network-manager preferably connects to? The only workaround I found so far was unchecking Connect Automatically in the options and re-enabling it when my preferred network is not available.

    I found a classic M-Series keyboard and I want to use it. However, it does not have the "Windows" key (a.k.a "Super"), only the Shift, Control and Alt modifiers. My keyboard shortcuts are cluttered as-is, since that I try to control both Emacs and the windows manager (Gnome) only from the keyboard. I rely on the "Super" key to identify the windows manager shortcuts. What it the best practice for keyboard-centric work without the "Super" key?
