• Enabling Compiz Viewport Switcher key bindings

  I'm running compiz 0.8.2 with compizconfig on Scientific Linux 6.2 with Gnome 2.28.2. In the compizconfig "General Options" I have "Desktop Size" set as follows: Horizontal Virtual Size: 6 Vertical Virtual Size: 1 Number of Desktops: 1 This gets me the layout I want, i.e. 6 workspaces in a horizontal layout. Ctrl-alt-cursor-keys work fine for switching between them. However, I can't figure out how to get key bindings for specific workspaces. I've tried enabling "Viewport Switcher" in compizconfig, and tried various combinations both in "Number-based viewport switching" and "Go to specific viewport", to no apparent effect. My first thought was that something else was eating the specific key bindings I chose, but I think I've tried every combination of shift, control, alt and super (i.e., the Windows key) by now. I tried setting 6 desktops under "General Options" instead of one desktop with horizontal virtual size 6, but that doesn't seem to make a difference either. What am I missing?

  Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: 1) Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) 2) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) 3) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first window when 2nd screen is unplugged 4) Keyboard shortcut friendly 5) Not too hard to install 6) Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences

• Pin two shortcuts to same application with different settings to taskbar

  I'd like to have two shortcuts to Visual Studio on my taskbar: one with default settings and a second modified to always run as admin. I know I can manually start a copy with admin rights by right clicking on the shortcut and then right clicking on the name of the application and selecting Run as administrator...; but I'd like to automate the process when I need it (without impeding my ability to start VS without admin rights when I don't need them).

• Run application with other user

  OS: Fedora 14 GUI: GNOME I need to run an application with another user then the "default" (normally used). Purpose: create a ".desktop" file on my desktop to run e.g.: Google Chrome with another user (NOT ROOT! - so beesu doesn't count.) There aren't any gksu, or kdesu packages in Fedora 14. Why? So i want to create a user with "adduser SOMEONE", and i want to run e.g.: Google Chrome with "SOMEONE" - then it will have minimum permissions, "more security". Thank you!

• Tabbed terminal that connects to a GNU Screen session?

  I use the session feature of screen extensively. For example, I'll start a screen session for "project1" as "screen -S project1", and then when I need to reconnect I use "screen -d -r project1". This makes it easy to manage multiple projects, each with their own set of shell sessions. What I would love to do now is that when running on Windows and Linux, to be able to use a tabbed terminal program (such as gnome-terminal) to connect to a screen session and have all of the screen windows split out to separate tabs. This way I get all the usual power of screen, but with the convenience of a richer GUI experience. Is there any such terminal program available on Windows and/or Linux?

• Lost current user (shutdown/logoff) widget after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04

  I've upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. Everything went fine until I've rebooted. After reboot, I've received some message about status panel and being sleepy, dismissed it. However, I haven't seen the user widget on Gnome Panel since that. This image shows which widget I'm talking about. • Can GnomeKeyring store passwords unencrypted?

  I have a Fedora 15 laptop with the root and home partitions encrypted using LUKS. When it boots I have to enter a pass phrase to unlock the master key, so I have it configured to automatically log me in to my account. However, GnomeKeyring remains locked, so I have to enter another pass phrase for that. This is unpleasant and completely pointless since the entire disk is encrypted. I've not been able to find a way to configure GnomeKeyring to store its pass phrases without encryption. For example, I was not able to find an answer here: http://library.gnome.org/users/seahorse-plugins/stable/index.html.en Is there a solution? If not, is there a mailing list where it would be appropriate to plead my case?

• Windows always open top left

  I find this a highly annoying "feature" on a wide screen monitor that my mostly used apps - terminal and gedit always open directly under the top-left corner of my screen and I have to drag them to my eye position each and every-time. I have tried installing the CompizConfig Settings Manager and using the feature to position windows centre, but this has had no effect - the force feature here isn't working for me either. I can use e.g. gnome-terminal --geometry=140x50+50+50 for the terminal but this doesn't work for gedit. Any ideas? Thanks

• What can i do when my Ubuntu stucked [closed]

  From time to time firefox cause to my Ubuntu machine to stuck.(nothing run on the machine except firefox) I cant move the mouse or move windows by keyboard. In some cases i have wait for a few minutes and than close last open tab in firefox and it solve the problem in other cases i do restart. Is there any way to prevent it, limit forefox in some way? In windows in most cased even with 100% cpu you can do alt-ctrl-delete and get the task manager, is there a top priority combination in linux that give you terminal? Or any other way ... Run on Ubuntux86 with GNOME , 2GB RAM, dual core cpu

• Android - Using PreferenceScreen to display and save settings to/from ContentProvider

  I have my own custom Content Provider that loads a datasbase which contains the settings information for my application. I load the settings from the ContentProvider on the creation of my Settings activity. My Settings activity is made up of a PreferenceScreen and Dialog based EditText's. The following code shows how I use the preference screen and edit texts. So as you can see from the first image this works and displays the menu with the information underneath. The problem is in image two, when I click on a choice in the menu the dialog pops up but it is empty, I would like to be able to load the data from my content provider into the edit text in the dialog, so in image one it shows "Donal" as the user name so in image two "Donal" should also appear in the edit text in the dialog. I would also like to be able to listen to the OK button in the dialog so when a user changes a setting I can update the data in my content provider. Can anyone help me with what I'm trying to do?   Hi all, I am trying to create a Database Manager page which shows the database details on page load and updates the database settings when the user press submit I followed this tutorial and set the database settings in properties file. I managed to update the database settings in properties file programmatically.   Hi I am using Windows mobile 6.0 classic PDA's , I want to use wireless to access my service on the server(Win 2008), what should be my settings in the PDA network management? here's what my settings which works for some PDA's and for some it works for some time and stops? and for some PDA's similar settings does not work at all?? "Programs that connect to the internet..." = ISP "Programs that connect to a private network..." = My Work Network BTW what is this My work network ??? i don't understand as my PDA's use wireless (with proxy) i wud guess ISP to both should work right? but when i change second option to ISP as well the PDA that can connect to internet and server thru PDA IE but not through .netCF application will not get connected at all, but will work fine (apart from .netCF application accessing the server) if i change the second option back to My work network, so basically PDA is not using the first option of ISP at all ?? In most of the cases that I came across, they seem to be using Treeview on the left pane of the form and configuration settings on the right pane. I am not the most skilled person with linux so not really sure how to assess components when adding them to my system. • ApplicationSettingsBase.Upgrade() Not Upgrading User Settings after Recompiling with .NET 4.0

  I have a C# program that is using the standard ApplicationSettingsBase to save its user settings. This was working fine under .NET 3.5. And the provided Upgrade() method would properly "reload" those settings whenever a new version of my program was created. Recently, I recompiled the program with .NET 4.0. My program's version number also increased. But, when I run this version, Upgrade() doesn't seem to to detect any previous version settings, and does not "reload" them. It starts blank. As a test, I recompiled yet again, going back to .NET 3.5. And this time, the Upgrade() method started working again. Is there a way to allow Upgrade() to work when switching frameworks? Is there something else I am missing? Thanks.

• iphone - Programmatically set (System-wide) proxy settings?

  I am new to iPhone development, so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. I am developing an application whose purpose will be to route all iPhone activity through my company's proxy. Is there a way to programmatically set system-wide proxy settings in the iPhone (which will also take effect on the 3G connection)? I know there is a way to manually set proxy settings for each wifi connection. Detecting new networks and setting the proxy on them would be acceptable. However, I need to also be able to set the proxy on the 3G connection. Also, bonus: Is there a way to programmatically change the "Restrictions" settings? If anyone has any tips or can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Thanks. EDIT: Please understand that this is for a legitimate purpose. Apple has to approve app store additions, so it's not like I'm trying to spread a virus. Please, constructive answers only.
