  • Sort an object by an other one.

    - by kevinb92
    Here's the deal : I have Publication objets in my application. I also have Vote objet. I can add votes on publication. A vote is defined like this, forOrAgainst, LinkedPublication, date, author etc etc... I want to sort Publication list by number of vote. What is the best way to link them ? Should i return a hashmap ? a treeset ? How do i add votes to publication. It's kinda messy in my brain now...

  • Sort vector<int>(n) in O(n) time using O(m) space?

    - by Adam
    I have a vector<unsigned int> vec of size n. Each element in vec is in the range [0, m], no duplicates, and I want to sort vec. Is it possible to do better than O(n log n) time if you're allowed to use O(m) space? In the average case m is much larger than n, in the worst case m == n. Ideally I want something O(n). I get the feeling that there's a bucket sort-ish way to do this: unsigned int aux[m]; aux[vec[i]] = i; Somehow extract the permutation and permute vec. I'm stuck on how to do 3. In my application m is on the order of 16k. However this sort is in the inner loops and accounts for a significant portion of my runtime.

  • Sort List based on dynamically generated numbers in C++

    - by user367322
    I have a list of objects ("Move"'s in this case) that I want to sort based on their calculated evaluation. So, I have the List, and a bunch of numbers that are "associated" with an element in the list. I now want to sort the List elements with the first element having the lowest associated number, and the last having the highest. Once the items are order I can discard the associated number. How do I do this? This is what my code looks like (kind've): list<Move> moves = board.getLegalMoves(board.turn); for(i = moves.begin(); i != moves.end(); ++i) { //... a = max; // <-- number associated with current Move }

  • C#: reading in a text file more 'intelligently'

    - by DarthSheldon
    I have a text file which contains a list of alphabetically organized variables with their variable numbers next to them formatted something like follows: aabcdef 208 abcdefghijk 1191 bcdefga 7 cdefgab 12 defgab 100 efgabcd 999 fgabc 86 gabcdef 9 h 11 ijk 80 ... ... I would like to read each text as a string and keep it's designated id# something like read "aabcdef" and store it into an array at spot 208. The 2 issues I'm running into are: I've never read from file in C#, is there a way to read, say from start of line to whitespace as a string? and then the next string as an int until the end of line? given the nature and size of these files I do not know the highest ID value of each file (not all numbers are used so some files could house a number like 3000, but only actually list 200 variables) So how could I make a flexible way to store these variables when I don't know how big the array/list/stack/etc.. would need to be.

  • C++ sort method

    - by qwead
    I want to sort a vector using std::sort, but my sort method is a static method of a class, and I want to call std::sort outside it, but it seems to be trouble doing it this way. On the class: static int CompareIt(void *sol1, void *sol2) { ... } std::sort call: sort(distanceList.at(q).begin(), distanceList.at(q).end(), &DistanceNodeComparator::CompareIt); Shouldn't it be possible to do this way?

  • sort list(of string()) using a variable index into string() as key - vb.net

    - by tullynyguy
    I have a List(of String()). I have written a custom comparer (implements IComparer(of string)) to do an alphanumeric sort. Is there a way to sort the List using a given index to determine which position in the String() to sort by? In other words one time I might sort by Index = 0 and another time by Index = 3. The length of all String() in the list is the same. For reference this question is similar to Sort List<String[]> except I am using VB.net and that question is hardwired to Index=0.

  • Need to sync two lists with atrribute time, but times aren't equal

    - by virgula24
    I gonna try to describe my problem the best i can. I have two lists, one with audio frames and other with color frames (not relevant). Both of them have timestamps, they were captured at the same moment but at different instants. So, i have like this: index COLOR AUDIO 0 841 846 1 873 897 2 905 948 3 940 1000 the frames start at high numbers because they were captured and then trimmed to specific parts, but im shot, frame 0 is synced with only 5ms apart(timestamp in ms). On every case i have, the audio frames count is less than the color count. I need to make them have the same count. The stating frames may be coloraudio, color

  • How to sort a hash by value in descending order and output a hash in ruby?

    - by tipsywacky
    output.sort_by {|k, v| v}.reverse and for keys h = {"a"=>1, "c"=>3, "b"=>2, "d"=>4} => {"a"=>1, "c"=>3, "b"=>2, "d"=>4} Hash[h.sort] Right now I have these two. But I'm trying to sort hash in descending order by value so that it will return => {"d"=>4, "c"=>3, "b"=>2, "a"=>1 } Thanks in advance. Edit: let me post the whole code. def count_words(str) # YOUR CODE HERE output = Hash.new(0) sentence = str.gsub(/,/, "").gsub(/'/,"").gsub(/-/, "").downcase words = sentence.split() words.each do |item| output[item] += 1 end puts Hash[output.sort_by{ |_, v| -v }] return Hash[output.sort_by{|k, v| v}.reverse] end

  • this block of code going straight to break in java

    - by user2914851
    I have this block in a switch case statement that when selected, just breaks and presents me with the main menu again. System.out.println("Choose a competitor surname"); String competitorChoice2 = input.nextLine(); int lowestSpeed = Integer.MAX_VALUE; int highestSpeed = 0; for(int j = 0; j < clipArray.length; j++) { if(clipArray[j] != null) { if(competitorChoice2.equals(clipArray[j].getSurname())) { if(clipArray[j].getSpeed() > clipArray[highestSpeed].getSpeed()) { highestSpeed = j; } } } } for(int i = 0; i < clipArray.length; i++) { if(clipArray[i] != null) { if(competitorChoice2.equals(clipArray[i].getSurname())) { if(clipArray[i].getSpeed() < clipArray[lowestSpeed].getSpeed()) { lowestSpeed = i; } } } } for(int h = lowestSpeed; h < highestSpeed; h++ ) { System.out.println(""+clipArray[h].getLength()); } I have an array of objects and each object has a surname and a speed. I want the user to choose a surname and display the speeds of all of their clips from lowest to highest. when I select this option it just breaks and brings me back to the main menu

  • Why is quicksort better than other sorting algorithms in practice?

    - by Raphael
    This is a repost of a question on cs.SE by Janoma. Full credits and spoils to him or cs.SE. In a standard algorithms course we are taught that quicksort is O(n log n) on average and O(n²) in the worst case. At the same time, other sorting algorithms are studied which are O(n log n) in the worst case (like mergesort and heapsort), and even linear time in the best case (like bubblesort) but with some additional needs of memory. After a quick glance at some more running times it is natural to say that quicksort should not be as efficient as others. Also, consider that students learn in basic programming courses that recursion is not really good in general because it could use too much memory, etc. Therefore (and even though this is not a real argument), this gives the idea that quicksort might not be really good because it is a recursive algorithm. Why, then, does quicksort outperform other sorting algorithms in practice? Does it have to do with the structure of real-world data? Does it have to do with the way memory works in computers? I know that some memories are way faster than others, but I don't know if that's the real reason for this counter-intuitive performance (when compared to theoretical estimates).

  • How do I center a GridView in its LinearLayout parent ?

    - by Jacques René Mesrine
    GridView is not behaving like it is supposed to. This screenshot shows that the GridView (in landscape mode) is flushed left. I want it centered. This is the XML layout for the GridView. <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/templatelandscape" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content"> <GridView android:id="@+id/commandsbarlandscape" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1.0" android:layout_alignParentTop="true" android:layout_centerInParent="true" android:padding="0dp" android:verticalSpacing="2dp" android:horizontalSpacing="2dp" android:numColumns="auto_fit" android:columnWidth="52dp" android:stretchMode="spacingWidth" android:gravity="fill_horizontal" / What am I doing wrong ?

  • What should students be taught first when first learning sorting algorithms?

    - by Johan
    If you were a programming teacher and you had to choose one sorting algorithm to teach your students which one would it be? I am asking for only one because I just want to introduce the concept of sorting. Should it be the bubble sort or the selection sort? I have noticed that these two are taught most often. Is there another type of sort that will explain sorting in an easier to understand way?

  • Shouldn’t GridView’s RowStyle-HorizontalAlign property overwrite CSS’s text-align property?

    - by AspOnMyNet
    a) As far as I know, GridView’s RowStyle-HorizontalAlign property should overwrite CSS’s text-align property, and thus text inside GridView's cells should be located on the left side of the cells, but is instead moved to the right side. Why is that? b) Similarly, RowStyle-Font-Bold should overwrite CSS’s font-weight property and thus fonts shouldn’t be in bold. But again, CSS’s property overwrites RowStyle’s Font-Bold property. Why? <div id="someClass"> <asp:GridView ID="gvwShowUsers" runat="server" > <RowStyle BackColor="#FFFBD6" ForeColor="#333333" Font-Bold="false" HorizontalAlign="Left" /> <Columns> <asp:BoundField DataField="UserName" HeaderText="UserName" /> </Columns> </asp:GridView> </div> CSS file: #someClass td { font-weight:bolder; text-align:right; } thanx

  • JBoss Seam: In ScopeType.PAGE I get: java.lang.IllegalStateException: No conversation context active

    - by Markos Fragkakis
    Hi all, I have a page-scoped component, which has an instance variable List with data, which I display in a datatable. This datatable has pagination, sorting and filtering. The first time gate into the page, I get this appended in my URL: ?conversationId=97. The page works correctly, and when I change datatable pages no now component is created. After a minute or two, and at seamingly random time, I get an exception saying that there is no context. I have not used @Create in my code or my navigation files. So, I have two questions: Why do I get this suffix in my URL? Why did a conversation start? Why the exception? The component is scoped to PAGE. If I received an exception, it should not be related to a conversation. Right? Or is the conversation the exception is referring a temporary conversation? Cheers! UPDATE: This is the page: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" • Most efficient 3d depth sorting for isometric 3d in AS3?

    - by AttackingHobo
    I am not using the built in 3d MovieClips, and I am storing the 3d location my way. I have read a few different articles on sorting depths, but most of them seem in efficient. I had a really efficient way to do it in AS2, but it was really hacky, and I am guessing there are more efficient ways that do not rely on possibly unreliable hacks. What is the most efficient way to sort display depths using AS3 with Z depths I already have?

  • Excel 2008 Cant Parse HTML

    - by VictorV
    I need to export a gridview to excel, I put the return html code from the gridview to a HtmlTextWriter and put this into the response. The result file work fine in excel, excel can parse the html and the result is readable, work perfect on excel 2003 and 2007, but in some machines with Excel 2008 (MACOS) excel shows only the raw html code and can't process this html code. Any idea to configure excel? This is the code to convert: public static void ToExcel(GridView gridView, string fileName) { HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response; response.Clear(); response.Buffer = true; fileName = fileName.Replace(".xls", string.Empty) + ".xls"; response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=" + fileName); response.Charset = ""; response.ContentEncoding = Encoding.Unicode; response.BinaryWrite(Encoding.Unicode.GetPreamble()); response.ContentType = MimeTypes.GetContentType(fileName); StringWriter sw = new StringWriter(); HtmlTextWriter hw = new HtmlTextWriter(sw); gridView.AllowPaging = false; //gridView.DataBind(); //Change the Header Row back to white color gridView.HeaderRow.Style.Add("background-color", "#FFFFFF"); //Apply style to Individual Cells for (int i = 0; i < gridView.HeaderRow.Cells.Count; i++) { gridView.HeaderRow.Cells[i].Style.Add("background-color", "yellow"); } for (int i = 0; i < gridView.Rows.Count; i++) { GridViewRow row = gridView.Rows[i]; //Change Color back to white row.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White; //Apply text style to each Row row.Attributes.Add("class", "textmode"); //Apply style to Individual Cells of Alternating Row if (i % 2 != 0) { for (int j = 0; j < row.Cells.Count; j++) { row.Cells[j].Style.Add("background-color", "#C2D69B"); } } } gridView.RenderControl(hw); //style to format numbers to string string style = @"<style> .textmode { mso-number-format:\@; } </style>"; response.Write(style); response.Output.Write(sw.ToString()); response.Flush(); response.End(); }

    - by psheriff
    In my last blog post I showed you how to create GridViewColumn objects on the fly from the meta-data in a DataTable. By doing this you can create columns for a ListView at runtime instead of having to pre-define each ListView for each different DataTable. Well, many of us use collections of our classes and it would be nice to be able to do the same thing for our collection classes as well. This blog post will show you one approach for using collection classes as the source of the data for your ListView.  Figure 1: A List of Data using a ListView Load Property NamesYou could use reflection to gather the property names in your class, however there are two things wrong with this approach. First, reflection is too slow, and second you may not want to display all your properties from your class in the ListView. Instead of reflection you could just create your own custom collection class of PropertyHeader objects. Each PropertyHeader object will contain a property name and a header text value at a minimum. You could add a width property if you wanted as well. All you need to do is to create a collection of property header objects where each object represents one column in your ListView. Below is a simple example: PropertyHeaders coll = new PropertyHeaders(); coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductId", "Product ID"));coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductName", "Product Name"));coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("Price", "Price")); Once you have this collection created, you could pass this collection to a method that would create the GridViewColumn objects based on the information in this collection. Below is the full code for the PropertyHeader class. Besides the PropertyName and Header properties, there is a constructor that will allow you to set both properties when the object is created. C#public class PropertyHeader{  public PropertyHeader()  {  }   public PropertyHeader(string propertyName, string headerText)  {    PropertyName = propertyName;    HeaderText = headerText;  }   public string PropertyName { get; set; }  public string HeaderText { get; set; }} VB.NETPublic Class PropertyHeader  Public Sub New()  End Sub   Public Sub New(ByVal propName As String, ByVal header As String)    PropertyName = propName    HeaderText = header  End Sub   Private mPropertyName As String  Private mHeaderText As String   Public Property PropertyName() As String    Get      Return mPropertyName    End Get    Set(ByVal value As String)      mPropertyName = value    End Set  End Property   Public Property HeaderText() As String    Get      Return mHeaderText    End Get    Set(ByVal value As String)      mHeaderText = value    End Set  End PropertyEnd Class You can use a Generic List class to create a collection of PropertyHeader objects as shown in the following code. C#public class PropertyHeaders : List<PropertyHeader>{} VB.NETPublic Class PropertyHeaders  Inherits List(Of PropertyHeader)End Class Create Property Header Objects You need to create a method somewhere that will create and return a collection of PropertyHeader objects that will represent the columns you wish to add to your ListView prior to binding your collection class to that ListView. Below is a sample method called GetProperties that builds a list of PropertyHeader objects with properties and headers for a Product object. C#public PropertyHeaders GetProperties(){  PropertyHeaders coll = new PropertyHeaders();   coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductId", "Product ID"));  coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("ProductName", "Product Name"));  coll.Add(new PropertyHeader("Price", "Price"));   return coll;} VB.NETPublic Function GetProperties() As PropertyHeaders  Dim coll As New PropertyHeaders()   coll.Add(New PropertyHeader("ProductId", "Product ID"))  coll.Add(New PropertyHeader("ProductName", "Product Name"))  coll.Add(New PropertyHeader("Price", "Price"))   Return collEnd Function WPFListViewCommon Class Now that you have a collection of PropertyHeader objects you need a method that will create a GridView and a collection of GridViewColumn objects based on this PropertyHeader collection. Below is a static/Shared method that you might put into a class called WPFListViewCommon. C#public static GridView CreateGridViewColumns(  PropertyHeaders properties){  GridView gv;  GridViewColumn gvc;   // Create the GridView  gv = new GridView();  gv.AllowsColumnReorder = true;   // Create the GridView Columns  foreach (PropertyHeader item in properties)  {    gvc = new GridViewColumn();    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = new Binding(item.PropertyName);    gvc.Header = item.HeaderText;    gvc.Width = Double.NaN;    gv.Columns.Add(gvc);  }   return gv;} VB.NETPublic Shared Function CreateGridViewColumns( _    ByVal properties As PropertyHeaders) As GridView  Dim gv As GridView  Dim gvc As GridViewColumn   ' Create the GridView  gv = New GridView()  gv.AllowsColumnReorder = True   ' Create the GridView Columns  For Each item As PropertyHeader In properties    gvc = New GridViewColumn()    gvc.DisplayMemberBinding = New Binding(item.PropertyName)    gvc.Header = item.HeaderText    gvc.Width = [Double].NaN    gv.Columns.Add(gvc)  Next   Return gvEnd Function Build the Product Screen To build the window shown in Figure 1, you might write code like the following: C#private void CollectionSample(){  Product prod = new Product();   // Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns(       prod.GetProperties());  lstData.DataContext = prod.GetProducts();} VB.NETPrivate Sub CollectionSample()  Dim prod As New Product()   ' Setup the GridView Columns  lstData.View = WPFListViewCommon.CreateGridViewColumns( _       prod.GetProperties())  lstData.DataContext = prod.GetProducts()End Sub The Product class contains a method called GetProperties that returns a PropertyHeaders collection. You pass this collection to the WPFListViewCommon’s CreateGridViewColumns method and it will create a GridView for the ListView. When you then feed the DataContext property of the ListView the Product collection the appropriate columns have already been created and data bound. Summary In this blog you learned how to create a ListView that acts like a DataGrid using a collection class. While it does take a little code to do this, it is an alternative to creating each GridViewColumn in XAML. This gives you a lot of flexibility. You could even read in the property names and header text from an XML file for a truly configurable ListView. • Is using build-in sorting considered cheating in practice tests?

    - by user10326
    I am using one of the practice online judges where a practice problem is asked and one submits the answer and gets back if it is accepted or not based on test inputs. My question is the following: In one of the practice tests, I needed to sort an array as part of the solution algorithm. If it matters the problem was: find 2 numbers in an array that add up to a specific target. As part of my algorithm I sorted the array, but to do that I used Java's quicksort and not implement sorting as part of the same method. To do that I had to do: java.util.Arrays.sort(array); Since I had to use the fully qualified name I am wondering if this is a kind of "cheating". (I mean perhaps an online judge does not expect this) Is it? In a formal interview (since these tests are practice for interview as I understand) would this be acceptable?

  • javascript table sorting/paging (client-side). How big is too big?

    - by Aheho
    I'm using a jQuery plugin called Tablesorter to do client-side sorting of a log table in one of my applications. I am also making use of the tablepager add-in. I really like the responsiveness that client-side sorting and paging brings to the party. I also like how you don't have to hit the web server or database repeatedly. However I can see that, in time, the log I'm displaying could grow quite large. I'm sure there comes a point where client-side paging and sorting is going to be impractical. What point will this technique begin to collapse under it's own weight? 500 records? 2000 records? 10,000 records? EDIT: In nutshell, what criteria would you use to determine if you are going to use client-side sorting/paging as opposed to server-side paging? Does the size of expected result set factor into your decision? Where is the tipping point?

  • How to enable Automatic Sorting of IEnumerable Data in GridView?

    - by ace
    How can I enable automatic sorting of my BLL which returns a List CustomerList:List in a GridView? Customer is my own strongly typed class and CustomerList is a List of customers. I know one approach is to set the AllowSorting property to true in the GridView and handle the OnSorting event and call a sorting method defined in my CustomerList class. However I would like a solution which is automatic in the sense that I do not have to handle the OnSorting Event, it should be like how GridView handles automatic sorting for DataView, DataTable, and DataSet. Is there an Interface I need to implement on my CustomerList or Customer class that will enable that functionality?

  • Simple way to use Foreign Key values for sorting?

    - by Brian Rizzo
    Disclaimer: I jumped to C# 2008 recently and SubSonic 3 (3.0.0.4) at the same time. I haven't used Linq for much of anything in the past. Is there an easy way to use the foreign key display value for sorting, rather than the FK Id (which is numeric)? I've added a new Find method in my ActiveRecord.tt to help with sorting based on a string field name but after doing some testing I realized that even though its working as it should be, I am not handling foreign key fields at all (they are just sorting by their value). Even if I need to change how I am accessing the data it is early enough in the project to do that. Just looking for suggestions.
