• Two dimensional virtual desktop space in Ubuntu

  Is there any way to create a 2-dimensional virtual desktop space in Ubuntu? The only control I'm seeing is the number of virtual desktops, but they seem to only go in a line. I'm used to having a 2-dimensional space (so I can go up/down/left/right instead of just left/right), and I'd really like to have that in ubuntu as well.

• Ubuntu 10.04 says wired network disconnected, but it works

  I've installed ubuntu 10.04, hoping to get rid of the 9.10 errors. (Nvidia driver didn't work quite properly, had some problems with clicking in flash, and I had -and still have- wired network working, but ubuntu said that it's disconnected) So the Nvidia driver is better now, but the network error is the same. I still have a working wired network connection, but when it starts says that it is disconnected. Notification area tells me the same thing. Why is that?

  I have a laptop with an 80GB SSD and 500GB HDD. I currently have Windows installed on the SSD, and a 400GB data partition for Windows on the HDD. I set aside 100GB on the HDD to try out Ubuntu, and I'd like to make it my primary OS and switch it over to the (much) faster SSD. How could I go about getting my Ubuntu setup moved over to the SSD? I have a 120GB USB hard drive I can use if necessary for getting through it.

  Ubuntu 10.04 With Gnome Every time Ubuntu goes to the screensaver and I unlock it, FireFox won't let me type anything. I can move the mouse and type in other programs... just not firefox. If I quit firefox and reopen it again, I can type in it. My keyboard connection is PS/2. Sounds buggish? -M

  I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop. Recently, I decided to install Ubuntu on my main desktop PC (dual boot with windows 7). I downloaded the Ubuntu installer for windows and installed it (it's now showing Ubuntu in the installed software in my W7 control panel). However, when I tried to boot Ubuntu, after the boot loader and the login screen, my screen splitted in half. I was not able to see the icons and the launcher. I was also not able to do anything. I uninstalled Ubuntu and tried again twice. Same thing/results. Then, I created a partition in W7 and installed Ubuntu on it. Unfortunately, it's doing the same thing. I never saw something like this. Any idea??? Thanks for your help and support.

• Dual Boot Windows 8 UEFI and Ubuntu 12.10

  I have got a new Samsung Series 7 laptop with Windows 8 where I tried to install Ubuntu. It is a 64-Bit system which uses UEFI and has "Secure Boot" switched on in the BIOS by default. After I switched if off (and set it to "UEFI and CSM OS") I was able to install Ubuntu (Ubuntu 11.10, which recognized Windows as Windows Vista, although it is Windows 8), by booting from CD with Settings/Change PC Settings/General/Advanced Startup in Windows 8. But after the installation and the restart of the machine somehow ignored Ubuntu and booted only Windows 8. Then I tried to reinstall Ubuntu 12.10. It still only boots Windows 8. Then I tried Boot Repair, which was not really helpful. Any ideas how I can create a dual boot system with Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10 ?   I've recently installed ubuntu onto my laptop. With the intention of dual booting with windows 7. On installation Grub wasn't loading, the computer continued to boot straight into windows. I loaded a live cd, mounted the installed ubuntu partion (sda6) as /mnt/ and windows boot partition as /mnt/boot Following the second option here: http://ubuntuguide.net/how-to-restore-grub-2-after-reinstalling-windows-xpvistawin7 Through its entirety, so creating a new grub.cfg file. chroot /mnt update-grub Did not find ubuntu, just windows 7 and the windows recovery partition. Thinking this might be a weird quirk that as I was in ubuntu (all be it a live cd) it might not list ubuntu I restarted. Grub loaded but ubuntu was nowhere to be seen. How can I add ubuntu with Grub2? I could have fixed this myself in old grub but I'm pretty much in the dark here. Thanks

• wired connection not being recognised in ubuntu 10.04 lts

  I have windows7 installed on my C drive and ubuntu 10.04 lts on my D drive. When I plud the lan cable (ethernet cable) onto the ethernet card of my laptop, windows7 identifies the network correctly without the need for any manual settings and connects me to the network correctly. Unfortunately, in ubuntu, even after plugging in the cable, nothing happens (on the network side). It is only scanning for wireless networks it seems, and doesnt bother about the wired networks. I tried adding a new wired connection and manually entered the physical address which was displayed when i connected to the network using windows. i entered the phy address, and told it to use auto dhcp and saved the dialog bog in ubuntu network connection. Still there is no change, and ubuntu doesnt seem to recognise anything. please let me know how to work with wired connections using ubuntu, and why my wired cable is not being recognized in ubuntu. thanks. PS: I am pretty new to ubuntu/ linux :)

  i have windows 7 x64 and ubuntu 10.04 installed on my machine. while i download at ~15 MiB/sec in ubuntu (reaches almost at an instant), it takes almost a minute or two for win7 to reach that speed while downloading -say- a film. also the connection becomes unresponsive for some time periods in win7. i experienced this in several win7 installations (x64 prof. always, same version).

  I'm trying to setup a hp officejet 5510 using HPLIP 3.10.2 under Ubuntu 9.10. The installation of the driver according to this guide was no problem but after installing and selecting the printer I was only able to print blank pages. The printer is working well under windows and scanning (its a multi-functional printer) is also possible under Ubuntu. Does anyone know this problem and a possible solution?

I've tried various ways including building my own version of LibBoost 1.38.0 yet none of my methods have worked. I was wondering if 1.38.0 is available precompiled on earlier versions of Ubuntu or if my architecture (64 Bit) is not compatible with LibBoost.   I am trying to start xampp when the ubuntu starts on ubuntu 9.10. I tried going to system-preferences-startup applications adding it there, but it didn't work. I surmised it was because it needs to be started as root. I know you can make a startup script some how, but I'm not sure how to do it. How can I make it start xampp when the computer boots, even without logging in? FYI, the command for starting it is sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
