  I have a very long running syncronization task that cannot be interrupted by the screen saver or aggressive power saving modes. I want to make a single api call to stop power save mode and then restore it once the task is done.   Related Questions: Benefits of using short-circuit evaluation, Why would a language NOT use Short-circuit evaluation?, Can someone explain this line of code please? (Logic & Assignment operators) There are questions about the benefits of a language using short-circuit code, but I'm wondering what are the benefits for a programmer? Is it just that it can make code a little more concise? Or are there performance reasons? I'm not asking about situations where two entities need to be evaluated anyway, for example: if($user->auth() AND $model->valid()){ $model->save(); } To me the reasoning there is clear - since both need to be true, you can skip the more costly model validation if the user can't save the data. This also has a (to me) obvious purpose: if(is_string($userid) AND strlen($userid) > 10){ //do something }; Because it wouldn't be wise to call strlen() with a non-string value. What I'm wondering about is the use of short-circuit code when it doesn't effect any other statements. For example, from the Zend Application default index page: defined('APPLICATION_PATH') || define('APPLICATION_PATH', realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../application')); This could have been: if(!defined('APPLICATION_PATH')){ define('APPLICATION_PATH', realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../application')); } Or even as a single statement: if(!defined('APPLICATION_PATH')) define('APPLICATION_PATH', realpath(dirname(__FILE__) . '/../application')); So why use the short-circuit code? Just for the 'coolness' factor of using logic operators in place of control structures? To consolidate nested if statements? Because it's faster?

The problem is that it is all too easy to write invalid XML with the XmlSerializer, and I can't find a way to validate the XML that does not look cumbersome. Ideally I would expect to set the schema in the XmlSerializer or to have a XmlWriter that validates.

  Hi, Can anyone tell me where/how to customise the CSRF token error message for forms in Symfony 1.4. I'm using sfDoctrineGuard for logins and in this form particularly, whenever a session runs out and you still have the page open, it throws a very user-unfriendly error: "CSRF attack detected". Something like "This session has expired. Please return to the home page and try again" sounds better. What's the right way to do this in the form class? Thanks.

• How do you write Valid XHTML 1.0 Strict code when you are using javascript to fill an element that r

  I'm running my site through the W3C's validator trying to get it to validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict and I've gotten down to a particularly sticky (at least in my experience) validation error. I'm including certain badges from various services in the site that provide their own API and code for inclusion on an external site. These badges use javascript (for the most part) to fill an element that you insert in the markup which requires a child. This means that in the end, perfectly valid markup is generated, but to the validator, all it sees is an incomplete parent-child tag which it then throws an error on. As a caveat, I understand that I could complain to the services that their badges don't validate. Sans this, I assume that someone has validated their code while including badges like this, and that's what I'm interested in. Answers such as, 'Complain to Flickr about their badge' aren't going to help me much. An additional caveat: I would prefer that as much as possible the markup remains semantic. I.E. Adding an empty li tag or tr-td pair to make it validate would be an undesirable solution, even though it may be necessary. If that's the only way it can be made to validate, oh well, but please lean answers towards semantic markup. • Friend Assemblies in C#

  I'm trying to create some 'friend assemblies' using the [InternalsVisibleTo()] attribute, but I can't seem to get it working. I've followed Microsoft's instructions for creating signed friend assemblies and I can't see where I'm going wrong. So I'll detail my steps here and hopefully someone can spot my deliberate mistake...? Create a strong name key and extract the public key, thus: sn -k StrongNameKey sn -p public.pk sn -tp public.pk Add the strong name key to each project and enable signing.   I am trying to automate a web page via the weBrowser and the button that i'm trying to click has no ID only a value. here's the html code for it: Accept I can't useGetElementById as the button has no ID. • WPF MVVM Picklist Example

  Hi, I am looking for a way of easily maintaining a list of Users belonging to a particular Group. I have thought about using a Picklist, where I have 2 listboxs, the first contains a list of Users the second a list of Users belonging to the Group. There will be buttons to allow the adding and removing of selected Users from the Group. As users are added they move from the left listbox to the right, as they are removed they are move from the right to the list. This is pretty common situation. Do you know of any examples of doing this in WPF using the MVVM pattern? I am having difficulty understand how the binding may work to my View Model and Business Entities. Especially persisting the data back to the database. I am using stored procedure calls to do the CRUD logic, so I need to keep a list of which Users had been removed so I can delete them. Is this the best way to perform this functionality or is there a better way. I simply want to pick from a list (the list may be large).

A quick search found a couple of promising options that look they might offer what I need: LINQ to JavaScript and jLinq Does any one have any experience using them? What are some pros and cons? Is the performance comparable? Does the function-passing syntax of LINQ to JavaScript offer any hidden benefits (I personally find the syntax of jLinq more appealing on first glance)? • Create new UIImage by adding shadow to existing UIImage

What I'm trying to do is take a UIImage and add a shadow to it, then return a whole new UIImage, shadow and all. • How do I sign exes and dlls with my code signing certificate

  (I purchased a code signing cert from Thawte and have been going out of my mind with frustration at the whole process. What I have from them are: .spc / .p7b file .pvk file (NOTE I do not have a pfx file from them. God knows why, but I have been fighting with their tech support for a week) In any case I find "help" links on their site and at MS for signcode.exe which is useless for me because I can't find that exe on my machine, however I do have signtool.exe. Unfortunately i am mystified at the command line parameters listed on this MS help site. Specifically, what parameters do I use and what values? I tried what I thought was obvious but it does not work at all. I can get the signing wizard to work, however I need this to work non-interactively in a hudson CI batch file. It really doesn't seem like it should be this difficult, but so far it is all black magic. thanks for any help

  Has anybody experienced Timeout error with TwitPic API using ASIFormDataRequest when uploading multiple images? Status updates without images are fine. I was trying to upload the exact same 2 images. The first request went through fine, but the second one was timeout. It also happens when multiple images are uploaded, some went through, but some didn't. It's happening randomly and I have no idea how to debug it anymore.

• Django TemplateSyntaxError only on live server (templates exist)

  I'm getting a strange error that only occurs on the live server. My Django templates directory is set up like so base.html two-column-base.html portfolio index.html extranet base.html index.html The portfolio pages work correctly locally on multiple machines. They inherit from either the root base.html or two-column-base.html. However, now that I've posted them to the live box (local machines are Windows, live is Linux), I get a TemplateSyntaxError: "Caught TemplateDoesNotExist while rendering: base.html" when I try to load any portfolio pages. It seems to be a case where the extends tag won't work in that root directory (???). Even if I do a direct_to_template on two-column-base.html (which extends base.html), I get that error. The extranet pages all work perfectly, but those templates all live inside the /extranet folder and inherit from /extranet/base.html. Possible issues I've checked: file permissions on the server are fine the template directory is correct on the live box (I'm using os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__)) to make things work across machines) files exist and the /templates directories exactly match my local copy removing the {% extends %} block from the top of any broken template causes the templates to render without a problem manually starting a shell session and calling get_template on any of the files works, but trying to render it blows up with the same exception on any of the extended templates. Doing the same with base.html, it renders perfectly (base.html also renders via direct_to_template) Django 1.2, Python 2.6 on Webfaction. Apologies in advance because this is my 3rd or 4th "I'm doing something stupid" question in a row. The only x-factor I can think of is this is my first time using Mercurial instead ofsvn. Not sure how I could have messed things up via that. EDIT: One possible source of problems: local machine is Python 2.5, live is 2.6. Here's a traceback of me trying to render 'two-column-base.html', which extends 'base.html'. • WCF Duplex net.tcp issues on win7

  We have a WCF service with multiple clients to schedule operations amongst clients. It worked great on XP. Moving to win7, I can only connect a client to the server on the same machine. At this point, I'm thinking it's something to do with IPv6, but I'm stumped as to how to proceed. Client trying to connect to a remote server gives the following exception: System.ServiceModel.EndpointNotFoundException: Could not connect to net.tcp://10.7.11.14:18297/zetec/Service/SchedulerService/Scheduler. The connection attempt lasted for a time span of 00:00:21.0042014. • Suggestions for entering mobile development -- pure iPhone SDK, Android SDK, Mono Touch or Titanium

  I am entering mobile development. I have been working primarily in .NET since 1.0 came out in beta. Before that, I was mostly a C++ and Delphi guy and still dabble in C++ from time to time. I do web apps quite a bit so I am reasonably proficient with Javascript, JQuery and CSS. I have also done a few Java applications. I started web programming with CGI and live mostly in the ASP.NET MVC world these days. I am trying to decide on which platform/OS and tool to select. I am concerned with the size of the market available for my applications as well as the marketibility of the skills I will pick up. The apps I have in mind would work on both phones and pads. Some aspects of what I have in mind will play better on the bigger screens that will be available on pads. Here are the options I am considering: Apple iPhone/iPad using pure Apple SDK (Objective-C) Apple iPhone/iPad using Mono Touch (C#) Android using pure Android SDK (Java) Multiple platforms using something like Titanium to generate native apps from web technologies (HTML, CSS and Javascript) Multiple platforms using HTML5 web applications that run in the browser (HTML, CSS and Javascript). Which option would you choose? Do you have a different suggestion? What are the pros and cons?

• Using XAMPP Install of MySQL with Netbeans 6.8/MySQL Workbench

  All, For all of this I am using Mac OSX Snow Leopard. I have happily used XAMPP to develop PHP backed sites in the past with no problems(as you'd expect for such a simple to set up package). I am now trying to set up this MySQL install in Netbeans 6.8 (for now just trying to get a sample database backed webapp to run). My issue is that even though MySQL has been started I cannot connect to it at 127.0.0.1 on port 3306 (which it is set up to use). I have read that the issue is that XAMPP holds MySQl.sock in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/... whereas MySQL Workbench and Netbeans expects to find it in /tmp/MySQL.sock. Is this correct? I've tried to set up a symbolic link from /tmp to the xmapp directory but this doesn't appear to have changed anything. Is there anything else I can try/anything that I am missing?
