• Where does IE store the ASP.NET_SessionId cookie?

  I am a bit baffled here; using IE7, ASP.NET 2.0 and Cassini (the VS built-in web server; although the same thing seems to be true for "real" applications deployed in IIS) I am looking for the session-id-cookie. My test page shows a session id (by printing out Session.SessionId) and Response.Cookies.Keys contains ASP.NET_SessionId. So far so good. But I cannot find the cookie in IEs cookie-store! Nor does "remove all cookies" reset the session (as it does in FF)... So where - I am tempted to write that four letter word - does IE store that bloody cookie? Or am I missing something? By the way there is no hidden field with a session id either, as far as I can see. If I check in FF there is a cookie called ASP.NET_SessionId as I would expect. And as mentioned above deleting that cookie does start a new session; as I would expect. Can anybody imagine what is happening here?

• Using a UITableViewController with a small-sized table?

  When using a UITableViewController, the initWithStyle: method automatically creates the underlying UITableView with - according to the documentation - "the correct dimensions". My problem is that these "correct dimensions" seem 320x460 (the iPhone's screen size), but I'm pushing this TableView/Controller pair into a UINavigationController which is itself contained in a UIView, which itself is about half the height of the screen. No frame or bounds wrangling I can come up with seems to correctly reset the table's size, and as such it's "too long", meaning there are a collection of rows that are pushed off the bottom of the screen and are not visible nor reachable by scrolling. So my question comes down to: what is the proper way to tell a UITableViewController to resize its component UITableView to a specified rectangle? Thanks! Update I've tried all the techniques suggested here to no avail, but I did find one interesting thing: if I eschew the UINavigationController altogether (which I'm not yet willing to do for production, but as an experiment), and add the table view as a direct subview of the enclosing view I mentioned, the frame size given is respected. The very moment I re-introduce the UINavigationController into the mix, no matter if it is added as a subview before or after the table view, and no matter if alloc/init it before or after the table view is added as a subview, the result is the same as it was before. I'm beginning to suspect UINavigationController isn't much of a team player... Update 2 The suggestion to check frame size after the table view on screen was a good one: turns out that the navigation controller is in fact resizing it some time in between load and display. My solution, hacky at best, has been to cache the frame given on load and to reset it if changed at the beginning of tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath:. Why there you ask? Because it's the one place I found that worked, that's why! I don't consider this a solution as it's obviously improper, but for the benefit of anyone else reading, it does seem to work.

• Delphi: how to lock dfm-s to not change...?

  Hi! We used Delphi 6 long times ago. Our problem, that Delphi have two problems with DFMs: 1.) When some linked resource (like DataSet) will removed, Delphi many times forget to ask you that "some of the resources are linked, you need to redirect...". This happens, when the actual form is not added to the project, or it is not opened. 2.) When we only open the DFM, and only see some thing, may we change it (active TabSheet, form position). Then Delphi auto save the form - and sometimes it drops the links. Another problem with this that we used SVN, and SVN detect these changes... We thought that we change DFM files to read only, but this can prevent the usage of SVN too... So somebody please help us: have the Delphi some extension (like gexpert) that can lock the DFMs to avoid changes, and some other tool to see that dataset is used in other forms or not?   DataGridView, for example, lets you do this: DataGridView dgv = ...; DataGridViewCell cell = dgv[1,5]; but for the life of me I can't find the documentation on the index/square-bracket operator. What do they call it? Where is it implemented? Can it throw? How can I do the same thing in my own classes? ETA: Thanks for all the quick answers. Briefly: the relevant documentation is under the "Item" property; the way to overload is by declaring a property like public object this[int x, int y]{ get{...}; set{...} }; the indexer for DataGridView does not throw, at least according to the documentation. It doesn't mention what happens if you supply invalid coordinates. ETA Again: OK, even though the documentation makes no mention of it (naughty Microsoft!), it turns out that the indexer for DataGridView will in fact throw an ArgumentOutOfRangeException if you supply it with invalid coordinates. Fair warning.

• How can I improve this search usability?

  This is the first real programming attempt of mine, and theres some major flaws. It's a learning project, and I'm currently re-writing the entire thing as my php is is really messy. I really want to get an idea on how I can improve the actual usability and accesibility of the site at the same time though - so I know how to implement it correctly. The website is basically a comparison website for gameserver hosting. As I mentioned, its a learning project and I don't actually expect any revenue from it. At the moment theres only test data in it, so in the game input box select either 'Battlefied Bad Company 2' or 'Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare' and ignore the actual search results. http://www.laglessfrag.com I wasn't really sure how to work the search functionality. Basically when you click a game in the drop down box, it sends an ajax request and finds all the locations available to that specific game in the database. After selecting the country theres another ajax to find all the citys available to the game in that country - which gives me the two unique identifiers I need to create the search results. One major and fundamental flaw is that without javascript enabled, the site ceases to function. I'll overcome that in the next re-write, but without the ajax functionality stopping the user 'going wrong' - how can I implement a search that requires two fields without creating extra steps in new pages after form submissions? I'm also no designer so my whole layout and css is a bit rubbish, but this was mainly a learning project as I'm interested in applications / programming rather than design. It's also slow as its on shared hosting, but if I can get it to work correctly then I'm not impartial to chucking a bit of money at it for faster hosting and maybe a bit of advertising and seeing where it goes (if anywhere!). Any info appreciated.

  It might be a bit difficult to explain, so I'll give some example code. Note that I'm using NetBeans IDE (latest). class Dummy { public function say(){ } } /** * Builds dummy class and returns it. * @return Dummy The dummy class. */ function say_something(){ return new Dummy(); } $s=say_something(); While developing in netbeans I can invoke auto-complete by hitting ctrl+space after typing "$s-". In the the hint window that follows, there is the item "say()". This is because the javadoc says say_something returns a Dummy and NetBeans parsed Dummy class to know that it has a method called "say()". So far so good. My problem is with arrays. Example code follows: /** * Builds array of 2 dummy classes and returns it. * @return Array The dummy class. (*) */ function say_something2(){ return array(new Dummy(),new Dummy()); } $s=say_something2(); If I try the auto-complete thing again but with "$s[0]-" instead, I don't get the methods fro Dummy class. This is because in the JavaDoc I only said that it is an array, but not the values' type. So the question would be, is there any JavaDoc syntax, cheat, whatever which allows me to tell JavaDoc what type of variables to expect in an array?

• .net 4.5 Asp Mvc -> Error 403.14- IIS 7 - Windows Server 2008 R2

  When I want to deploy an MVC 4 (.net 4.5) application to my iis i got the 403.14 calling me that the content ist not browseable. This also occurs when i deploy the unchanged mvc 4 template. when using the mvc 4 template with .net 4.0 everything works. I checked the other posts but can't figure out the solution. ist set i ran aspnet_regiss -i which completed without any errors. the only strange thing is that .net 4.5 is installed in the .net 4.0 directory %windows%/microsoft.net/Framework64/4.0.30319 From this folder i also ran aspnet_regiis. to ensure that 4.5 is installed i restarted the .net 4.5 setup and it tells me taht it is installes Also the apppools show me 4.0.30319 as version. There is an other application targeting mvc with 4.5 which runs. but i don't know wether it was created with a 4.0 templated and retargeted to 4.5 Any hints? The app.config is the unchanged default from the mvc 4 template. I just tested to create a subfolder which i convert to an application. placing the site there makes it working. But why not on root folder?

Everything that has the IBOutlet and @property are also @synthesized and released in the .m file. Leaks is showing that I have memory leaks with CALayer when I create these custom view objects. Am I doing something wrong here when I create these custom view objects? I'm kind of tearing my hair out trying to figure out where these leaks are coming from. As a side note, I have a UIImageView background image defined in these custom views but I didn't define properties and IBOutlets in my .h and .m files. Defining them doesn't make a difference when I run it through Leaks but just wanted to confirm if I'm doing the right thing. Any input would be super helpful. Thanks :)

• Performance question: Inverting an array of pointers in-place vs array of values

  The background for asking this question is that I am solving a linearized equation system (Ax=b), where A is a matrix (typically of dimension less than 100x100) and x and b are vectors. I am using a direct method, meaning that I first invert A, then find the solution by x=A^(-1)b. This step is repated in an iterative process until convergence. The way I'm doing it now, using a matrix library (MTL4): For every iteration I copy all coeffiecients of A (values) in to the matrix object, then invert. This the easiest and safest option. Using an array of pointers instead: For my particular case, the coefficients of A happen to be updated between each iteration. These coefficients are stored in different variables (some are arrays, some are not). Would there be a potential for performance gain if I set up A as an array containing pointers to these coefficient variables, then inverting A in-place? The nice thing about the last option is that once I have set up the pointers in A before the first iteration, I would not need to copy any values between successive iterations. The values which are pointed to in A would automatically be updated between iterations. So the performance question boils down to this, as I see it: - The matrix inversion process takes roughly the same amount of time, assuming de-referencing of pointers is non-expensive. - The array of pointers does not need the extra memory for matrix A containing values. - The array of pointers option does not have to copy all NxN values of A between each iteration. - The values that are pointed to the array of pointers option are generally NOT ordered in memory. Hopefully, all values lie relatively close in memory, but *A[0][1] is generally not next to *A[0][0] etc. Any comments to this? Will the last remark affect performance negatively, thus weighing up for the positive performance effects?

• Crosshairs in Java

  I am making a game that needs a crosshair. I have been playing with the java.awt.cursor class and that is easy enough, but the problem is that I do not want the crosshairs to be able to leave the window I create for my game, so I tried this instead: private void drawCrossHair(Graphics g){ Ellipse2D ellipse = new Ellipse2D.Float(); ellipse.setFrame(crossHair.x, crossHair.y, 36, 36); Color yellow = new Color (0xEDFF62); g.setColor(yellow); g.fillOval(crossHair.x, crossHair.y, 40, 40); g.setClip(ellipse); g.clip(ellipse); Basically I am trying to remove the "ellipse" from "g" leaving only a small ring behind. The problem here is that "g.clip(ellipse);" gives me an error. My objective with this code is to create a circle with a transparent center, like a donut. Once the donut is created I will add some small points on the inside of it so it looks more like crosshairs. One thing that may or may not be an issue is that I plan on moving the crosshairs with a joystick, not a mouse... I do not know if that will limit my options for what kind of object my crosshairs can be.

• RichEdit VCL and URLs. Workarounds for OnPaint Issues.

  So, issue is with the thing Delphi progies scare to death - Rich Edit in Windows ( XP and pre-XP versions ). Situation: I have added EM_AUTOURLDETECTION in OnCreate of form. Target - RichEdit1. Then, I have form, that is "collapsed" after showing form. RichEdit Control is sattic, visible and enabled, but it is "hidden" because form window is collapsed. I can expand and collapse form, using Button1 and changing forms Constraints and Size properties. After first time I expand form, the URL inside RichEdit1 control is highlighted. BUT - After second, third, fourth, etc... time I Collapse and Expand form, the RichEdit1 Control does not highlight URL anymore. I have tried EM_SETTEXTMODE messages, also WM_UPDATEUISTATE, also basic WM_TEXT message - no luck. It sems like this merssage really works ( enables detection ) while sending keyboard strokes ( virtual keycodes ), but not when text has been modified. Also - I am thinking to rewrite code to make RichEdit Control dynamic. Would this fix the problem? Maybe solution is to override OnPaint / OnDraw method to avoid highlight ( formatting ) losing when collapsing or expanding form? Weird is that my Embarcadero Documentation says this function must work in any moment text has been modified. Why it does not work? Any help appreciated. • Reloading the model of a TTTableViewController

  My problem is that I have a Register Controller and a Login Controller. The Login Screen displays a Login Screen or a Logout Screen depending if a user is logged in. Now when a user registers, does not close the app, and then goes to the Login Screen it will still display a Login Screen, although there is a logged in user already. This is because the Screen is created when the application loads and does not change afterwards. I tried doing this: - (id)init { if (self = [super init]) { [self invalidateModel]; [self reload]; but that did not work, since it is only called on the first init. then i tried: - (void)viewDidLoad { [self invalidateModel]; [self reload]; } But that method had the same problem. Then I found this method: - (TTNavigationMode)navigationModeForURL:(NSString*)URL; with the following options: typedef enum { TTNavigationModeNone, TTNavigationModeCreate, // a new view controller is created each time TTNavigationModeShare, // a new view controller is created, cached and re-used TTNavigationModeModal, // a new view controller is created and presented modally TTNavigationModeExternal, // an external app will be opened } TTNavigationMode; It seems like TTNavigationModeCreate would be the right thing to use, but I have no clue how to use it. • Uncaught exception while using xdebug

  I'm not too great with xdebug so forgive me if this is a stupid question. But I installed it on a separate machine and it performed some magic for me like formating my var_dump() output and catching any uncaught exceptions. It also fails to format the stack traces, outputting plain text which is extremely hard to read. As I am learning the Lithium PHP Framework I am required to use php5.3, on my other machine I compiled from the source but on this machine I'm using the precompiled packages from dotdeb.org. As far as I can tell the only difference is that this is a slightly newer version of php and it comes with the Suhosin patch. The other odd thing is that the xdebug functions such as xdebug_var_dump() work, aside from poor formatting. This is an Ubuntu machine, so I don't know if it could be anything to do with the dotdep packages, but I have installed xdebug through pecl, the downloadable tarball and from the SVN repository. But to no avail. You can see my php.ini and output of php -i in the following gist. I copied php.ini from /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini over to /etc/php5/cli/php.ini so php -i should reflect my apache setup. http://gist.github.com/391675 Any help is appreciated. Rich

• Insert a datetime value with GetDate() function to a SQL server (2005) table?

  I am working (or fixing bugs) on an application which was developed in VS 2005 C#. The application saves data to a SQL server 2005. One of insert SQL statement tries to insert a time-stamp value to a field with GetDate() TSQL function as date time value. Insert into table1 (field1, ... fieldDt) values ('value1', ... GetDate()); The reason to use GetDate() function is that the SQL server may be at a remove site, and the date time may be in a difference time zone. Therefore, GetDate() will always get a date from the server. As the function can be verified in SQL Management Studio, this is what I get: SELECT GetDate(), LEN(GetDate()); -- 2010-06-10 14:04:48.293 19 One thing I realize is that the length is not up to the milliseconds, i.e., 19 is actually for '2010-06-10 14:04:48'. Anyway, the issue I have right now is that after the insert, the fieldDt actually has a date time value up to minutes, for example, '2010-06-10 14:04:00'. I am not sure why. I don't have permission to update or change the table with a trigger to update the field. My question is that how I can use a INSERT T-SQL to add a new row with a date time value ( SQL server's local date time) with a precision up to milliseconds?

• How do I Data-Bind dual DateTimePicker to a single DateTime object

  Hi, I have a simple form, with two DateTimePicker-controls: One for date, and one for time. The thing is these two controls are supposed to represent a single point in time. Hence I would like to "Bind" them to a single DateTime property on my form (for simplicity). I did the following: // Start is a DateTime property on the form _StartDate.DataBindings.Add("Value", this, "Start"); _StartTime.DataBindings.Add("Value", this, "Start"); But hooking into "ValueChanged" event, yields mixed results... Sometimes I get exactly what I want, sometimes the updates of the property are "sluggish". I figured this way of splitting into two DateTimePicker's was fairly common. So how to do it? Update: There is possibly multiple questions in there: How do I bind a DateTimePicker (Format: Date) to a DateTime Property on a form? Then, how do I bind yet another DateTimePicker (Format: Time) to the same property? I'm using Visual Studio Express 2008 (.NET 3.5), and I seemingly get ValueChanged events from the DateTimePickers before the value is changed?

• How would you go about parsing markdown?

  You can find the syntax here. The thing is, the source that follows with the download is written in perl. Which I have no intentions of honoring. It is riddled with regex and it relies on MD5 hashes to escape certain characters. Something is just wrong about that! I'm about to hard code a parser for markdown and I'm wonder if someone had some experience with this? Edit: If you don't have anything meaningful to say about the actual parsing of markdown, spare me the time. (This might sound harsh, but yes, I'm looking for insight, not a solution i.e. third-party library). To help a bit with the answers, regex are meant to identify patterns! NOT to parse an entire grammar. That people consider doing so is foobar. If you think about markdown, it's fundamentally based around the concept of paragraphs. As such, a reasonable approach might be to split the input into paragraphs. There are many kinds of paragraphs e.g. heading, text, list, blockquote, code. The challenge is thus to identify these paragraphs and in what context they occur. I'll be back with a solution, once I find it's worthy to be shared.

• What are the alternatives to public fields?

  I am programming a game in java, and as the question title suggestions i am using public fields in my classes. (for the time being) From what i have seen public fields are bad and i have some understanding why. (but if someone could clarify why you should not use them, that would be appreciated) The thing is that also from what i have seen, (and it seems logical) is that using private fields, but using getters and setters to access them is also not good as it defeats the point of using private fields in the first place. So, my question is, what are the alternatives? or do i really have to use private fields with getters and setters? For reference here is one of my classes, and some of its methods. • does sfWidgetFormSelect provide a string or an int of the selected item?

  Hey guys, I'm having an annoying problem. I'm trying to find out what fields of a form were changed, and then insert that into a table. I managed to var_dump in doUpdateObjectas shown in the following public function doUpdateObject($values) { parent::doUpdateObject($values); var_dump($this->getObject()->getModified(false)); var_dump($this->getObject()->getModified(true)); } And it seems like $this-getObject()-getModified seems to work in giving me both before and after values by setting it to either true or false. The problem that I'm facing right now is that, some how, sfWidgetFormSelect seems to be saving one of my fields as a string. before saving, that exact same field was an int. (I got this idea by var_dump both before and after). Here is what the results on both var dumps showed: array(1) {["annoying_field"]=> int(3)} array(1) {["annoying_field"]=>string(1)"3"} This seems to cause doctrine to think that this is a modification and thus gives a false positive. In my base form, I have under $this->getWidgets() 'annoying_field' => new sfWidgetFormInputText(), under $this->setValidators 'annoying_field' => new sfValidatorInteger(array('required' => false)), and lastly in my configured Form.class.php I have reconfigured the file as such: $this->widgetSchema['annoying_field'] = new sfWidgetFormSelect(array('choices' => $statuses)); statuses is an array containing values like {""a", "b", "c", "d"} and I just want the index of the status to be stored in the database. And also how can I insert the changes into another database table? let's say my Log table? Any ideas and advice as to why this is happen is appreciated, I've been trying to figure it out and browsing google for various keywords with no avail. Thanks! Edit: ok so I created another field, integer in my schema just for testing. I created an entry, saved it, and edited it. this time the same thing happened!

• How to estimate tomcat server requirements?

  We have a brand new webapp written that runs on Tomcat. So far, only one client is using it through the day. They run about 180 unique logins a day. Not really a lot IMO. Now, we managed to sell it to a brand new client who likes and wants to roll it out to 50,000 clients. How many of them will login at the same time - no idea. But I need to do the whole thing - allocate, create, config and maintain. OK - last is simple(errrr). The application runs off of Tomcat 5.5 on Gentoo (I'm thinking to upgrade to Tomcat 6) with MSSQL & mySQL behind. I do realize that a more enterprise ready application would be a better fit, but that's not an option at the moment. Since I've never done this before, I'm a bit lost. Can someone advice on how to go about estimating the equipment requirements for this client? Tomcat does have clustering, so that I can do. MS SQL - I'm sure they have something too. I'm thinking to stick it behind LVS (which we do use at the moment for something else too). Any help from people who deal with these details is greatly appreciated!

• Is it possible to add JPA annotation to superclass instance variables?

  Hi, I am creating entities that are the same for two different tables. In order do table mappings etc. different for the two entities but only have the rest of the code in one place - an abstract superclass. The best thing would be to be able to annotate generic stuff such as column names (since the will be identical) in the super class but that does not work because JPA annotations are not inherited by child classes. Here is an example: public abstract class MyAbstractEntity { @Column(name="PROPERTY") //This will not be inherited and is therefore useless here protected String property; public String getProperty() { return this.property; } //setters, hashCode, equals etc. methods } Which I would like to inherit and only specify the child-specific stuff, like annotations: @Entity @Table(name="MY_ENTITY_TABLE") public class MyEntity extends MyAbstractEntity { //This will not work since this field does not override the super class field, thus the setters and getters break. @Column(name="PROPERTY") protected String property; } Any ideas or will I have to create fields, getters and setters in the child classes? • How can I work around WinXP using ports 1025-5000 as ephemeral?

  If you create a TCP client socket with port 0 instead of a non-zero port, then the operating system chooses any free ephemeral port for you. Most OSes choose ephemeral ports from the IANA dynamic port range of 49152-65535. However in Windows Server 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft used ports 1025-5000 as the ephemeral range, according to their bind() documentation. I run multiple Java services on the same hardware. On rare occasions, this range collides with well-known ports that I use for other services (e.g. port 4160 for Jini discovery). While rare, this has caused real problems. Is there any easy way to tell Windows or Java to use a different port range for client sockets? Microsoft's docs indicate that I can change the high end of that range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. Update: I've made some progress on this. It looks like Microsoft has a concept of reserved ports that are exceptions to the ephemeral port range. There's a registry setting that lets you change this permanently and apparently there must be an API to do the same thing because there's a data structure that holds high/low values for reserved port ranges, but I can't find the actual function call anywhere... The registry solution may work, but now I'm fixated on this API.

• Custom Alignment and Backgrounds Through Greasemonkey

  I'm trying to implement something in greasemonkey and it is giving me a fair bit of trouble as I can't get it to work. I frequently use Wolfram Alpha (http://wolframalpha.com) for a lot of things. They have recently updated the home page with a new style. There are settings that you can edit on this page (http://www.wolframalpha.com/homesettings.html) As you would expect when you clear cookies you loose these settings. What I would like to do is have a greasemonky script that sets the background to what ever I like (which will stay also regardless of the state of your cookies). It would also be cool if this background was displayed the whole way through Wolfram Alpha (ie when you make queries too eg. http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=stack+overflow ) The other thing I'm trying to implement but I'm struggling is to force the results pages to be left aligned so that the browser window can be smaller. If anyone could help me with this it would be appreciated, I have tried to do it my self but I'm unsure how to get it to work.

• Compiler Errors...it ran yesterday!?

  This is a pre-existing Java project being run in Eclipse 3.5.2 32 bit.. Day 1: Install Java SE 6 Update 20 JDK. Experience Crash in Eclipse. Install Java 5. Same problem-(uninstall java 5). Re-install Java 6. Install Eclipse 3.3.1. Install Eclipse 3.5.2. 32-bit. No problems. Run Eclipse 3.5.2. 64-bit. No problems. Set up the project, configure, and run. No problems. Day 2: Load Eclipse to start a new project. Previous project now has 940 errors. Error Type is "Java Problem". The project ran 100% without a problem on Day 1. The only thing that happened between Day 1 and Day 2 was restarting my computer. I just tried to recreate the project, step by step, and am still getting the same errors. I know it's not the code -- it was working. Not to mention that it's an opensource project, such a problem would be documented. I'm thinking something is wrong with my Java install. Or, perhaps, it's a 32-bit/64-bit problem. I'm running win7 64bit. So before formatting my window's partition, I thought I'd throw the problem your way to see if anyone knows what's going on. Thanks.
