  Oracle VM Server for SPARC (LDoms) release 2.2 came out on May 24. You can get the software, see the release notes, reference manual, and admin guide here on the Oracle VM for SPARC page. Oracle VM Server for SPARC enables you to create multiple virtual systems on a single physical system.Each virtual system is called alogical domain and runs its own instance of Oracle Solaris 10 or Oracle Solaris 11. The version of the Oracle Solaris OS software that runs on a guest domain is independent of the Oracle Solaris OS version that runs on the primary domain. So, if you run the Oracle Solaris 10 OS in the primary domain, you can still run the Oracle Solaris 11 OS in a guest domain, and if you run the Oracle Solaris 11 OS in the primary domain, you can still run the Oracle Solaris 10 OS in a guest domain In addition to that starting with the Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.2 release you can migrate guest domain even if source and target machines have different processor type. You can migrate guest domain from a system with UltraSPARC  T2+ or SPARC T3 CPU to a system with a SPARC T4 CPU.The guest domain on the source and target system must run Solaris 11 In order to enable cross CPU migration.In addition to that you need to change the cpu-arch property value on the source system. • Best alternatives to recover lost directories in FAT32 external hard drive?

  I have an 320 GB ADATA CH91 external hard drive. I guess it has some problems with the connector of the USB jack. The point is that in certain occasions it fails in write operations generating data losses. Right now I lost a directory with several GB's of very useful information. Since then I have not attempted to write to the disk any more. What tool would you recommend to recover the lost data? The disk is FAT32 formatted (only one partition) and I use both Linux and Windows. What filesystem format would you recommend to avoid future data losses? I currently only use this external hard drive in Linux so there are several available choices (FAT, NTFS, ext3, ext4, reiser, etc.).

• Is there a piece of software which lets you turn "anything" into a dynamic reorderable list?

  I could write this myself, but I want to know if it already exists. Basically, it must fulfill these criteria: To reorder items, the user must never have to manually renumber them. That would be annoying, and it doesn't scale. Can read from a range of data sources (e.g. a database, a directory on the file system, a text file, another list) When the original data source changes, the list must automatically change with it (possibly with confirmation, e.g. if a list item would be deleted) Ability to persist the list ordering in some fashion Graphical display of list items (so that they can include e.g. images) Optional extras: Ability to modify data and write back to the data source (other than the ordering information)

• How to populate a private container for unit test?

  I have a class that defines a private (well, __container to be exact since it is python) container. I am using the information within said container as part of the logic of what the class does and have the ability to add/delete the elements of said container. For unit tests, I need to populate this container with some data. That date depends on the test done and thus putting it all in setUp() would be impractical and bloated -- plus it could add unwanted side effects. Since the data is private, I can only add things via the public interface of the object. This run codes that need not be run during a unit test and in some case is just a copy and paste from another test. Currently, I am mocking the whole container but somehow it does not feel that elegant a solution. Due to Python mocking frame work (mock), this requires the container to be public -- so I can use patch.dict(). I would rather keep that data private. What pattern can one use to still populate the containers without excising the public method so I have data to test with? Is there a way to do this with mock' patch.dict() that I missed?

• Display glitches running ATI propietary driver under Ubuntu 12.10

  I have a lot of problems with the Ati propietary driver (fglrx). I have an iMac (mid 2011) with a Radeon HD 6900M [1002:6720]. I did not have any problem under Ubuntu 12.04, but since I updated to 12.10, I get some annoying graphic corruption. The worst one is that sometimes the screen does not update with the new information. It happens a lot when I change between tabs in Chrome or Sublime Text. It usually gets updated when I scroll the page. Sometimes, when I type, I have to wait a little bit to view the new characters. And I get trails when I move windows too (like a part of the window). After a while, the trail disappears. I tried to install fglrx, fglrx-updates and the new beta driver downloaded from Ati (12.11 Beta 11/16/2012), with no luck. It happens the same with all of them. I tried to mess with Compiz config, but it didn't fix anything. The open source driver does not suffer this problem, but I need the performance of the propietary driver . Do you have any clue? • Apache configuration file visualization/testing

  Is there a tool available (or a debug mode built into Apache) that will allow me to interactively test and explain an Apache configuration for a given request? In particular, I'd like to be able to see which directives will apply when requesting a specific URL. For example, the output for the URL http://myserver.com/foo/bar/bar.html might look something like: Allow from 192.168.0.3 <-- From <Location /foo/bar> in myserver.com vhost Require valid user <-- From <Directory /var/www/foo> in global configuration Satisfy any <-- From <File bar.html> in global configuration [Background: why do I want this? The apache merging rules for configuration directives are quite complex to get right. It would be great to have a tool which allows you to check that your rules are doing exactly what you want, and would be a good learning tool]. If there isn't such a tool, is there a debug option in Apache that will log such information for each incoming request?

• Programming During a Crisis

  Hello, I'm having difficulty turning this into a proper question, but here goes... Some of you may have heard about the flooding happening in Queensland, Australia. Well, I'm in the inner suburbs of Brisbane right now; the river has been slowly creeping toward my house since Tuesday. When I left for work this morning it was twenty meters down the road when it is normally kilometers away. Within hours of the distater striking, the government already had some pretty good web applications available for people to get information about what was happening and where the flood was predicted to rise. They also set up a database for people to search for the whereabouts of relatives or could register their location for others to see. Has anyone been involved in the development of these kinds of projects before? It's interesting that they could churn out this software in what appeared to be less than a day when the average development house could take weeks at best. In what ways did it differ from a 'normal' project? Any other thoughts?

• Should I be using Windows Live Mail or Outlook?

  I have been using Windows Live Mail now for a few years, and like the interface, ect ect. Just having a clear out of my domains emails, and think I should set up the other accounts properly. I have Outlook (using 2010 beta), so I thought maybe I should use it? Can anyone give me reasons for and against both bits of software? I did look for some comparisons between the two, but can't find much. Plus I always value up to date information. Bit more background: Using 1 Hotmail and 5 IMAP accounts (possibly more). Use a Windows Mobile. Any way I can sync the calendar and tasks OTA to my hotmail and back down to outlook? I know this is probably more a discussion question (sorry), but I would argue that it can be answered, as it is a question relating to what I myself, in my circumstances would be best. • Can I run virtualized 64-bit Operating Systems if my CPU doesn't support VT-X?

  I have installed VMWare 10.0 workstation on my Compaq CQ60-615DX laptop. The Operating System is Windows 7 Home Premium. When I tried to run Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit in a virtual machine in VMWare I get an error saying: This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible. This host does not support Intel VT-x. For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. So I googled and found that I have to enable Intel VT-x. But I found out that my processor doesn't support Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x). So am I doomed and can I never run any virtual OS on my laptop? Or can I run 32-bit OSes?

• Can I make a business in teaching home users Ubuntu [on hold]

  I was thinking about a way to bring Ubuntu to the bigger public, since it has great advantages for people in the lower income class that only use a PC for basic usage. They pay for a windows licence without actually needing windows because 95% of what they do is in a browser and the other 5% is typing a word document or making a simpel Excel sheet. So for these people something like Ubuntu is ideal, they can prolong the life of their old PC or laptop with Ubuntu and thus saving extra money. And as we all know, saving money is not only interesting for the lowest of income but for most of us. But when I talk to people they don't want to use Ubuntu because they know Windows and they don't know this, they'll complain about having to adapt to windows 8 but adapting to Ubuntu seems a bridge too far. But what if someone in the neighborhood gave simple Ubuntu courses. Teaching people about Ubuntu, stuff like: What is an OS What is Ubuntu How do I obtain Ubuntu How do I install Ubuntu How do I set up my email in Ubuntu How do I make a text document in Ubuntu How do I update my facebook wall in Ubuntu ... Simple basic PC usage, but within Ubuntu. But as much as I would like to work for free all day, I can't do this for free for people outside of my social circle. So I was wondering if it is possible to make a business and make money with giving Ubuntu courses, or are their steps to be taken before this is possible. However... Do I need an Ubuntu or Canonical license? Do I need to get a certificate? Do I have to make some kind of deal or contract with Canonical? Just to be clear this is all just an idea in my head at this point, I'm just gathering information. I'm not a teacher at a school, just a programmer that is thinking about options in life. • SATA Devices not showing up when in UEFI mode

  I'm trying to install Windows and the bios should be set to UEFI mode. The problem is that all SATA devices aren't showing up (shows as if there aren't any) so I can't boot from the installation CD (it's just not there). The weird thing is that when set to LEGACY mode they all show up.. SATA mode is set to AHCI and I'm on Lenovo Y510P. I have a Linux OS installed that is accessible only when BIOS is in LEGACY mode (otherwise the hard drive it's on is not available) I also tried reseting the BIOS settings which didn't help.. Comment please if more details needed Extra details: Computer model: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P (not overcloacked) Installed Linux OS version: Linux 3.7-trunk-amd64 x86_64 Trying to install Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit BIOS Information: Vendor: LENOVO Version: 74CN26WW(V1.07) Update: Using user1608638 answer and suggestion of using the USB flash drive as the boot device instead of the CD/DVD method I succeeded in installing Windows 7! • Tools for tracking disk usage

  I manage a number of linux fileservers. These all run applications written from 0-10 years ago. As sometimes happens, a machine will come close to, or run out of disk space. Reasons include applications not rotating log files, a machine with 500GB of disk producing 150GB of new files every month that were not written to tape, databases gradually increasing in size, people doing silly things...generally a bit of chaos. Anyway, when a machine unexpectedly goes from 50% to 100% full in a couple of hours, I figure out what broke (lots of "du") and delete files or contact someone. I also can look at cacti graphs to figure out what the machine's normal disk usage is (e.g. for /home). Does anyone know of any tools that will give finer grained information on historial usage than a cacti/RRD graph? Like "/home/abc/xyz increased 50GB in the last day".

• Restore Point area getting deleted

  Hi, I'm running a multi-boot scenario (which I have been successfully on a number of machines for a number of years). I have Windows 7 (32 bit) on one partition and Windows 7 (64 bit) on another and a common data partition (which happens to store the user hives for each OS instance). For some reason, on one particular machine (a HP Pavilion notebook) the restore points get trashed after a reboot. I can create them (both manually and automatically), but after some (but not all) reboots the restore points get trashed. I have all three partitions set (on both OSs) to hold restore information. This setup has worked successfully on other machines for at least 12 months. I'm out of ideas... I DO need the restore points as I do "bleeding edge" stuff and they've saved my bacon on other machines in the past... TIA, Paolo

• How to set individual NTFS partitions permissions behaviour for each user account?

  I have two NTFS partitions (DOWNLOADS for downloaded files and VM for my VirtualBox .vdi file) for which i must have full permissions for my allday use account. They should be also automounting when i login to this account. But i've also set Guest account for guests. For Guest account, i want make VM partition fully disabled and invisible (and thus it mustn't automount) but DOWNLOADS partition should be shared with limited privileges with Guest account. Editing fstab i'm able to share DOWNLOADS partition with Guest on limited privileges but VM can be only set to limited and have disabled automounting - so guest can't mount it but it still can be seen in Nautilus, plus I must always mount it manually when i login to allday account. Is there some trick to make what i want? • Using the promote builds plugin to tag subversion repository in jenkins

  We have a task which builds based on data from 4 different SVN repositories. I want to allow QA promote a build, so that the revisions participating in the build are tagged with the build number and some optional label. I have encountered the following problem - the promoted build may not be the most recent build. How do I know the SVN revision of each of the four repositories used during that build? I know that each build has this information in the revision.txt and build.xml files associated with the build, but how does it become available in the context of promotion? Thanks. P.S. • Why does the player fall down when in between platforms? Tile based platformer

  I've been working on a 2D platformer and have gotten the collision working, except for one tiny problem. My games a tile based platformer and whenever the player is in between two tiles, he falls down. Here is my code, it's fire off using an ENTER_FRAME event. • Hard Disk recovery

  I have 3 disks of the same type model and year of production. All the disks were used part of a generic solution of an IBM server solution. My problem is that all 3 disks suffered the same malfunction at the same exact time and are now dis-functional. I went to two different expert's laboratories and got the same answer: To recover the data they need another identical disk from which they can take spare parts. Can my case really be that clinical? Anyway, I am not sure if this question belongs to this forum, but I am looking to buy the following disk: IIBM ESERVER XSERIES IBM P/N 24P3707 IBM FRU 24P3708 146.8GB USCSI 10K RPM PART NOMBER 9V2005-027 I already bought a disk with the same part number, but the labs said that apparently I need a disk that was manufactured in the same factory. That means that all the numbers have to be exactly the same. If anybody know where I can purchase such a disk (the information on the lost disks is really important to me), please tell me the place.

• Content light website and Google - Tell google it's a listings site (as opposed shop, reviews or restaurants)

  I have a listings style website. Due to the nature of this (listings) the site is content light. Each page is typically less that 50 words but there are many pages. The site in question has had a ton of media coverage and so has some great inbound links from places like Wired, Fast Company, Canada Broadcasting Corporation and many many other bloggers, media websites and recycle related niche authors (It's a recycling site). But Google really ignores it. Traffic from search is very very low - less than 5% of all traffic. I know that using markup you can tell Google whether your site is a restaurant, article, review, shop, local business and a few other categories (https://www.google.com/webmasters/markup-helper/u/0/). Is there a way to tell Google that my site is a listings site? I suspect, but do not know for sure, that part of the problem is that Google simply does not know what my site is? It's a crowdmap where people post curbalerts. The information is useful to people but it is presented in a short, concise way - a pin on a map, a picture and a short description. Adding anything further is not necessary for the site's intended purpose. 1st question - how best to tell the search engines what y site is - listings and not some spammy website? • Tracking down laptops Google has never heard of

  Using MS tools to get information on PCs using our software, our customers have sent several Lenovo systems which have names we simply cannot find using Google... no search results at all. Considering these names/ids are returned by querying the system directly, not asking the customer to write it down by looking at the box, this seems odd. The ones we have so far (more than one of each) are: Lenovo 2241BL9 Lenovo 6463Y4H My guess is these are Thinkpads after Lenovo took over the brand, but can anyone help me out with this detective work? edit: the 2nd one does turn up some driver downloads and this page, but it's unclear what any of that means. • Partition tool with console UI (as in server installation)?

  Back in 2006, Ray (3DLover) posted the same question in: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=309680 but none of the answers were really useful. Now with a little help from AskUbuntu community, I would like to repeat his question again to see if this time it can be answered correctly. So this is the question (and what I wish too): I'm looking for a UI tool for managing partitions in a console. I have installed Ubuntu Server, so I don't have X Windows at all. fdisk and sfdisk are entirely command line. parted is slightly better, but it's not really a UI. cfdisk has somewhat of a UI, but it only works on one disk at a time, and there's no advanced options like configuring LVM or RAID. Just partitioning. I love the partition tool that is available during the OS install procedure. You can partition, configure RAID's and LMV sets. It can format the partitions with several different file systems, it can set labels, mount options and it can insert your volumes into your fstab. Is this tool available as a stand-alone program? I can't find it anywhere. I think it's called parted_server, but I can't find much information about where to get it. In the past, I have run the Ubuntu install procedure just to use the partition manager that comes with it. (canceling the install after making my partition edits) Anyone help me on this? • Is it possible to use software raid in Windows 7 on the boot partition?

  I want to use RAID 1 on my workstation configuration at work, and I've been looking at using the build in mirror functionality in Windows 7. When you click on the add mirror option it presents you with the following warning. I've done some Google searching and the consensus seems to be that you cannot boot from a dynamic volume, but some forum posts seem to indicate that people have tried this with success (e.g. here). With Google searches producing contradictory information I thought I'd ask you guys for an authoritative answer. Can I use the inbuilt Windows 7 mirroring for my boot partition? Or as I suspect, will it make it unbootable due to it being converted to a dynamic disk?

• Getting data from closed files with concatenate formula

  Each day a program is creating an excel file for me with some data for the current day. Like what is the price for products, how many people are available today and things like that. Based on all this I need to make some forecasts and workplace allocations for workers. The problem is, that I need to drag all this information manually all the time. So to make it automatic I placed the formula in cells like: ='c:\ABC\[ABC 29-01-14.xlsx]sheet'!a1 Everything works fine, but next day I have to change file name for "ABC 30-01-14" for each cell, what is the same as entering the data manually. So I used "concatenate" formula to change date according to today's date automatically. I used "indirect" formula to turn it in to a real formula, not text string, and realized that it is working only for open files, not closed. Is there any way to do this for closed files without VBA, because I don't know it, or with VBA but explained for an idiot.

• SharePoint Session Management - which SQL Server option?

  We're developing some custom web parts for our WSS 3 intranet, and have just run into something we'd like to use ASP.NET sessions for. This isn't currently enabled on the development server. We'd like to use SQL Server as the storage mechanism, because the production environment is a web farm with very simple load-balancing. There are 3 options you can choose from to set up the SQL Server session storage, tempdb, default separate DB, named DB. Both tempdb and default separate DB create a new DB to store certain information in; tempdb stores the actual session info in tempdb, which doesn't survive a reboot, and default separate DB stores everything in the new DB. Since you've got to create the new DB either way, my question is this: why would you ever choose to store the session info in tempdb? The only thing I can think of is if you'd like to have the ability to wipe the session by rebooting the server, but that seems quite apocalyptic!
