• How to make the internal subwoofer work on an Asus G73JW?

  I have an Asus G73JW laptop which has an internal subwoofer built-in. Currently, the system detects the internal speakers as a 2.0 system (or I can change do 4.0 is the only other option). I found a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/673051 which discusses the bug and according to them a fix was sent upstream back at the end of 2010. I would have thought this would have made it into 12.04 but I guess not? I tried following the link given at the very bottom to install the latest ALSA drivers, here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules however I keep running into an error when trying to install: sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) Reading package lists... • Get OpenVPN clients names to resolve through dnsmasq

  I have a PFSense box running as an OpenVPN server. There are several remote devices that connect through the VPN (as tap devices). The VPN stuff is working, I can access the remote hardware by looking up the IP assigned to each device on the PFSense router. What I'd like is to have it so I can resolve the remote hardware addresses via DNS while on the local network. Note that this is only local-network - remote-device (they're backup boxes). I don't need to have the remote devices resolve using the local DNS forwarding agent. I have the rest of the devices on the network that need to be accessible via DNS report their name during the DHCP process. However, the IP assignment for OpenVPN tap clients, while it is dynamic (which is why I need DNS), does not seem to use the local DHCP server. How can I have my openvpn server add information for it's clients to the dnsmask resolver? Is this setup even reasonable (I'm not familiar with openVPN at all)?

  I have AD Users, or contacts that are not Exchange Mailbox users, or contacts. I also have a SSO system (Ping Identity... technology similar to Microsoft ADFS), where it leverages the AD Schema attribute: CustomAttribute1 to store information needed for SSO. This CustomAttribute1 was created by the Exchange Schema. I would like to use CustomAttribute1 for both AD Users and AD Contacts, as well as the Exchange equivalent user and contacts. Question Since the Exchange tools will only allow me to modify "Exchange" users, what is the way to modify the AD counterpart? e.g. if the following command sets a mailbox... set-mailbox -Identity [email protected] -CustomAttribute1 [email protected] -WarningAction silentlyContinue What command will allow me to update an AD user (non-mailbox) under the same schema attribute?

• Why doesn't phpMyAdmin connect to MySQL server?

  I'm running xampp on Windows 7, and when I type localhost/phpmyadmin, there is an error: phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server. • How to setup users for desktop app with SQL Azure as backend?

  I'm considering SQL Azure as DB for a new application I'm developing. The reason I want to go with Azure is because I don't want to have to maintain yet another database(s) and I want my users to be able to access the data from anywhere. The problem is that I'm not clear regarding how to users will connect. The application is a basic CRUD type of windows app. I've read that you need to add your IP to SQL Azure's firewall to connect to it, but I don't know if it's only for administration purposes only. Can anyone clarify if anyone (anywhere) can access the data with the proper credentials? Which of the following scenarios would work best (if at all)? A) Add each user to SQL Azure and have the app connect directly to Azure as if it was connecting to SQL Server B) Add an anonymous user SQL Azure and pass the real user's password/hash with every call so the Azure database can service the requests accordingly. C) Put a WCF service in between so that it handles the authentication stuff. The service will only serve the appropriate information to the user given his/her authentication and SQL Azure would be open to the service exclusively. D) - ideas are welcomed - This is confusing because all Azure examples I see are for websites. I have a hard time believing SQL Azure wouldn't handle the case of desktop apps connecting to it. So what's the best practice?

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here. • How can I see if apache is overloaded and dropping or not accepting connections?

  Basically I just want to see if apache is handling a current level of high traffic or if I need to tune it to handle more connections. (I have found plenty of information on the actual tuning, so no help needed there) I know it has been dropping or not accepting connections earlier today, but not seeing anything in the error logs. Is the expected behavior to throw a 503 in the error log if apache cannot accept more connections? If so, what error logging level do I need in order to see these? What is the correct terminology: dropping connections or not accepting connections? MPM is prefork, OS is Linux, apache version is 2.2.15.

• What is involved with writing a lobby server?

  So I'm writing a Chess matchmaking system based on a Lobby view with gaming rooms, general chat etc. So far I have a working prototype but I have big doubts regarding some things I did with the server. Writing a gaming lobby server is a new programming experience to me and so I don't have a clear nor precise programming model for it. I also couldn't find a paper that describes how it should work. I ordered "Java Network Programming 3rd edition" from Amazon and still waiting for shipment, hopefully I'll find some useful examples/information in this book. Meanwhile, I'd like to gather your opinions and see how you would handle some things so I can learn how to write a server correctly. Here are a few questions off the top of my head: (may be more will come) First, let's define what a server does. It's primary functionality is to hold TCP connections with clients, listen to the events they generate and dispatch them to the other players. But is there more to it than that? Should I use one thread per client? If so, 300 clients = 300 threads. Isn't that too much? What hardware is needed to support that? And how much bandwidth does a lobby consume then approx? What kind of data structure should be used to hold the clients' sockets? How do you protect it from concurrent modification (eg. a player enters or exists the lobby) when iterating through it to dispatch an event without hurting throughput? Is ConcurrentHashMap the correct answer here, or are there some techniques I should know? When a user enters the lobby, what mechanism would you use to transfer the state of the lobby to him? • Group Policy dealing with IE zone assignment not sticking!

  I have a group policy (which ONLY deals with the zone assignment) -that is continually switching on and off with reboots. I thought it was a conflicting group policy but when I run group policy modeling report it doesn't show any descrepancies that I can see. I thought it may be an issue with one domain controller wasn't replicating my policy change to the other one, but this isn't the case. I checked both domain controllers and they show the same information. The assignment is on a user basis and is in: user configuration > administrative templates > windows components > internet explorer > internet control panel > security and is site to zone assignment.

  Where is the php.ini file in Ubuntu hardy? The file found in path called /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini.ucf-dist. Do I need to rename file 'php.ini.ucf-dist' to 'php.ini'? Where is the system currently reading the php information when I run info.php file? I tried to compare one item what gets displayed when I run info.php file and when I edit the 'php.ini.ucf-dist' file. The 'memory_limit' shows 128M when I run info.php file but in the 'php.ini.ucf-dist' file it is set to 16M. So this cant be the same file being read by the system currently? Thanks for help.

• Live Mesh beta on Windows 7 - Did anybody get it working?

  I have Live Mesh beta installed on 64 bit Windows 7 but cannot connect to the computer remotely. The "Manage devices" page gives this information: This device is synchronizing but cannot be remotely accessed. Check the Live Mesh notifier on the device to see if Live Mesh remote desktop enhancements need to be installed. However, I cannot find instructions on how to use the "notifier" to "see" if Live Mesh remote desktop enhancements are installed or how I could install them. When I originally installed (both times) Mesh I did tell it to install "remote desktop enhancements". Does this just not work with Windows 7 and/or 64 bit?

• My new hard drive won't automount on boot

  I installed a new hard drive right before installing the new Ubuntu 11.10 by reformatting, not upgrading. I was able to mount my drive, and partition it. It's a 1TB, and I was able to transfer all of my music, and videos to it. For some reason, it won't mount on boot, and I can't figure out how to manually mount it afterwards either.   Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful. • When resizing Windows Explorer on Windows 8 it crashes?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes. • How can I tell what command is running on the remote end of an ssh connection?

  Tl;dr - how do I find the name of the command (eg $BASH_COMMAND) running on the remote end of an ssh connection? ... My example setup is two tmux vertical panes, LH pane runs a local vim session with vertical split, RH pane runs an ssh session running vim, again with a vertical split. Using tmux-navigator I can navigate from left to right over the first 3 vim buffers, but the 4th (far right hand one) is inaccessible. The reason for this is that tmux-navigator tests the value of 'pane_current_command' and compares it to 'vim' before deciding which keystrokes to dispatch. On the right hand tmux pane, the current command is 'ssh' and not 'vim'. What I want to do is test for (pane_current_command =~ 'ssh'), and if so, examine the command that is running on the far side of the connection? I cannot find a way to get hold of this, so any suggestions would be welcome? • Exchange server listening on port 25 but clients dont recieve emails

  My exchange server is listening on port 25, that is I can telnet into it and send an email but Outlook 2010/2007, OWA, and ActiveSync are not pulling down emails. Outlook 2010 specifically says Connected To Exchange Server and Updating Inbox but it never updates the inbox. Also, OWA shows some of the newer mail messages, but when I double click on one to open it up in OWA, it times out. Any idea what could be causing this? Also Exchange Transport and Information Store are started. Thanks!

  Quite a simple one here, but I guess the answer will be a resounding no! I have a few symbols, basic clip-art, which I'd like to display depending on certain information. At the moment, I'm using this statement to display Y or N: =IF(B2>0,VLOOKUP(B2,'Student Data'!$A$2:$L$36,8),"") It's a simple lookup which checks another worksheet to see if someone has entered "Y" or "N" into the relevant column. What I'm wondering is this: would it be possible to display these clip-art images (I have them in .PNG format) instead of simple text? I.e. IF VALUE_OF_CELL=7, DISPLAY IMAGE1. Thanks in advance,

• What's a good tool for collecting statistics on filesystem usage?

  We have a number of filesystems for our computational cluster, with a lot of users that store a lot of really large files. We'd like to monitor the filesystem and help optimize their usage of it, as well as plan for expansion. In order to this, we need some way to monitor how these filesystems are used. Essentially I'd like to know all sorts of statistics about the files: Age Frequency of access Last accessed times Types Sizes Ideally this information would be available in aggregate form for any directory so that we could monitor it based on project or user. Short of writing something up myself in Python, I haven't been able to find any tools capable of performing these duties. Any recommendations?

• D-Link router WiFi and LAN segment

  I have D-Link 2650 router. Some wireless and wired clients connected to it. The problem is there is no interconnection between wireless and wired devices. For instance, when I start webserver on PC connected to wired LAN, WiFi devices cannot access it (other wired devices can). However all devices are in the same subnet: 192.168.1.x. How can I connect WiFi and LAN devices to one network? Or maybe what I should know first (any information with which I can proceed)?

• How can I see how much bandwidth each Apache Virtual Host is using?

  I have Apache set up to serve several Virtual Hosts, and I would like to see how much bandwidth each site uses. I can see how much the entire server uses, but I would like more detailed reports. Most of the things I have found out there are for limiting bandwidth to virtual hosts, but I don't want to do that; I just want to see which sites are using how much bandwidth. This isn't for billing purposes, just for information. Is there an apache module I should use? Or is there some other way to do this?

  How does news applications work other than RSS Feed based applications? I know some of them take the RSS content from the source site.But sometimes I see, those applications show - Title Description Date Image video etc. Even though when I see the original site's rss, image, video is not there in rss. So how does one get that to show in there applications? Some applications even shows feeds from magazine sites, newspaper sites. How do these applications work? I am creating an application which will link to different news sites feeds categorized (like top news, technology, games, articles etc.) On the front page it will show the website names, then on selection of any news site it will get the feed from that website and show it to user. So I would like to know All the fetching of data from should be done on user selection or data should be prefetched? Detailed information I want to fetch from the original like provided in the rss data. How should I go about it?
