• Why can .NET not have memory leaks?

  Ignoring unsafe code, .NET cannot have memory leaks. I've read this endlessly from many experts and I believe it. However, I do not understand why this is so. It is my understanding that the framework itself is written in C++ and C++ is susceptible to memory leaks. Is the underlying framework so well-written, that it absolutely does not have any possibility of internal memory leaks? Is there something within the framework's code that self-manages and even cures its own would-be memory leaks? Is the answer something else that I haven't considered?

• Background settings for a JDesktopPane

  I'm using a self-made DesktopPaneUI for a JDesktopPane, I've written the proper methods for the class, and I'm running into trouble. When I resize the JDesktopPane, the background image doesn't resize with the frame. The image appears to be clipped at the size it was when the window initially opened. I'm giving it an image larger than the window, and I'm still having this problem. Here's my method call inside the constructor of my desktopUI class. super(); this.background = javax.imageio.ImageIO.read(new File(fileName)); Is there a way I can change my main class where I set the UI, or the myDesktopPaneUI class such that the background still fills the window when the JDesktopPane changes size? setUI(new myDesktopPaneUI("media/bg.jpg"));

• Custom ASP.NET MVC cache controllers in a shared hosting environment?

  I'm using custom controllers that cache static resources (CSS, JS, etc.) and images. I'm currently working with a hosting provider that has set me up under a full trust profile. Despite being in full trust, my controllers fail because the caching strategy relies on the File class to directly open a resource file prior to treatment and storage in memory. Is this something that would likely occur in all full trust shared hosting environments or is this specific to my host? The static files live within my application's structure and not in an arbitrary server path. It seems to me that custom caching would require code to access the file directly, and am hoping someone else has dealt with this issue.

  I have a cherrypy app that I'm controlling over http with a wxpython ui. I want to kill the server when the ui closes, but I don't know how to do that. • Creating a menu using xslt for Umbraco

  I've created a menu in umbraco using XSLT. The menu is using the usual ul and li elements and I'm displaying only the first level of the menu. The aim is to create a menu that expands to show the sub menu when I click a parent node (in the top level). I am after the xslt I would need to expose the sub menu when clicked. I think I would need to make use of ancestor-or-self to detect the current menu and parent menu and display them and also the $currentPage variable. The code sets the GNOME terminal title to user@somehost (obviously with the real user name and host name). However some hosts have tcsh as login shell, so I need to translate the code into tcsh and add it to the .tcshrc . I considered to somehow source another file with the bash code from inside the .tcshrc file, but I couldn't make it work.

  Hi all, Bit of a strange question, but how do ClickOnce deployments work from a web site? I seem to be having some problems with this. Basically, the setup file will download when you click the "install" button, but then some files are missing. Do you need to be on a Microsoft server to run ClickOnce deployments? I usually do deployments over a local server with UNC, and as this is the first time I've done one online I'm struggling a bit. Any newbie tutorials you can point me to would be great, and if I do need a special host for it, could you please recommend some? Cheers!

• PHP - Opening uploaded DOCX files with the correct MIME TYPE

  I have users uploading DOCX files which I make available for download. The issues we have been experiencing is the unknown mime types of DOCX files which causes IE to open these docs as Zip files. It is running on a Windows/IIS server. Because this is a shared host, I cannot change any server settings. I was thinking that I could just write some code that would handle DOCX files, perhaps custom output: if (extension=docx) { header("Content-Disposition: attachment; etc) header('Content-Type: application/application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document'); Output the file contents etc } Would this be a viable solution?? If so, can someone help fill in the gaps? (PS I know the above syntax is not correct, just a quick example)

  Large part of squeak is implemented using squeak itself. I am curious to know if pseudo variables such as self or true are also implemented using squeak. If the answer is yes, where the implementation located? Specifically, assume that I want to add new subclass of "Boolean" called "Other" which will represent a third option: neither true nor false. I want that other, the only instance of Other to be similar to the true/false global singletons. Any ideas? Thank you.

  Hi - Receiving recommendations for commercial TCP/IP stack implementation based on FreeBSD or NetBSD. Requirements are similar to a typical desktop PC running a browser, email and streaming voice/video. Which is to say a rich network functionality for a end-host type of device with mature implementation and reasonable performance. BSD derived network stacks are deployed in wide variety of situations for years and hence have mature implementation. It's supposed to run on a proprietary RTOS. Most vendors I found don't advertise if their stack is based on BSD. Any recommendations? -- Vineet

  One of the things I like about Microsoft's RDC Client is that the resolution of the experience is set by the client and not, say, a physical monitor connected to the host, as is the case with VNC; the latter being the protocol used by Mac. This means that even though I'm connecting to a notebook with a 1280x800 physical resolution, via RDC I can run it at 2560x1600 on my 30" monitor. However, that only seems to work for RDC. Does anyone know of something I can run on the Mac that will allow me to remotely control it at a different resolution than what is physically set? TIA, Mark

  I've been messing around with T4 support in Mono and noticed a very cumbersome thing. The current directory when running T4 templates is the home directory. I need to be able to read a few files from the current project's directory but I'm at a loss for how to. <#@ template language="C#v3.5" #> <#@ output extension="txt" #> <#=System.IO.Directory.GetCurrentDirectory() #> yields /home/earlz where I want it to yield something like /home/earlz/MyProject How do I overcome this problem? • Problems setting up an ASP.NET MVC site on IIS7 w/ Nhibernate

The only other cause of this error I can find is that the Global.asax file is inheriting from a class other than HttpApplication, but I'm not doing that either. Same is if a client gets disconnected and I want to delete the Node. I am using Delphi7 and Indy9 Any Idea how to fix that?

My other question is, when I using the following command: mysql_connect($this->host,$this->username,$this->password) is my hostname 'localhost' alone or do I also have to include port alongside the localhost? • ETL mechanisms for MySQL to SQL Server over WAN

  I’m looking for some feedback on mechanisms to batch data from MySQL Community Server 5.1.32 with an external host down to an internal SQL Server 05 Enterprise machine over VPN. The external box accumulates data throughout business hours (about 100Mb per day), which then needs to be transferred internationally across a WAN connection to an internal corporate environment before some BI work is performed. This should just be change-sets making their way down each night. I’m interested in thoughts on the ETL mechanisms people have successfully used in similar scenarios before. SSIS seems like a potential candidate; can anyone comment on the suitability for this scenario? Alternatively, other thoughts on how to do this in a cost-conscious way would be most appreciated.   Right now, my application is using the c-ares asynchronous DNS resolver library on Windows below cURL, and I have users complaining that it behaves differently from other windows apps. One particular user said that "other applications are using the Microsoft DNS client" and experiences no problems. cURL itself has an asynchronous DNS implementation that uses getaddrinfo() in a thread. My guess is that would be equivalent behavior to using the "DNS Client" and its host of functions (e.g. DnsQuery?) So, dear Lazyweb, I ask if there is a tangible difference between the behavior of getaddrinfo() vs. using the actual Dns* APIs from the Win32 API.

The close button on the window boarders of my GTK Message dialogues require a double click to actually close them. The close button on the dialogue its self works fine. I added a dataset object to my project and added a table to the dataset. Everything works fine in the IDE, however, I get an error in the generated designer code on the table adapter constructor. • SKProductsRequest delegate methods are never called.

  This used to work for me but is now not working anymore and I can't figure out why. I have in-app purchase setup in my app. I confirmed that I have a correct set of product identifiers, matched by corresponding in-app purchase items in itunesconnect. The call goes out to Apple view [productRequest start], but I never get a response back, despite setting the delegate to myself. What am I missing? • Reversed Latitude/Longitude US Tiger/Line Shape File to MySQL w/ OGR2OGRP

  Hi - I've downloaded the latest set (2010) of TIGER edge shape files (ESRI shapefile format) from the US Census website and am loading them into MySQL using the GDAL ogr2ogr utility. A new table (geotest) does get created with a SHAPE column that has the geometry defined as a LINESTRING. However, I am seeing reversed latitude and longitude values that get reversed when running the following command: ogr2ogr -f "MySQL" MySQL:"geo,user=lejeuned,host=localhost,password=cnickl234" -nln geotest -nlt LINESTRING -append -a_srs "EPSG:4326" -lco engine=MYISAM tl_2010_01021_edges.shp Mapping the latitude/longitude (after reversing them of course) they appear to be spot on so I suspect there is just something I am doing wrong or flag I am missing which is causing the latitude and longitudes to be transposed. When I select the SHAPE column using astext() I get the following result: LINESTRING(-86.69863 32.973164,-86.69853 32.97302,-86.69856 32.97287,-86.698613 32.972825,-86.6988 32.972825,-86.6989 32.972892,-86.6989 32.973002,-86.69874 32.97316,-86.69864 32.97318,-86.69863 32.973164) Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
