• Schliemann's method of programming language learning

  Background: 19th-century German archeologist Heinrich Schliemann was of course famous for his successful quest to find and excavate the city of Troy (an actual archeological site for the Troy of Homer's Iliad). However, he is just as famous for being an astonishing learner of languages - within the space of two years, he taught himself fluent Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and later went on to learn seven more, including both modern and ancient Greek. One of the methods he famously used was comparison of a known text, e.g. take a book in a language one is fluent in, take a good translation of a book in a language you wish to learn, and go over them in parallel. (various sources cited the book used by Schliemann to be the Bible, or, as the link above states, a novel). Now, for the actual question. Has anyone used (or heard of) an equivalent of Schliemann's method for learning a new programming language? E.g. instead of basing the leaning on references and tutorials, take a somewhat comprehensive set of programs known to have high-quality code in both languages implementing similar/identical algorithms and learn by comparing them? I'm curious about either personal experiences of applying such an approach, or references to something published, or existance of codebases which could be used for such an approach? What got me thinking about the idea was Project Euler and some code snippets I saw on SO, in C++, Perl and Lisp.

• Interface Builder is unable to open documents of type iPad XIB.

  After installing SDK 3.2 Beta 5 on your MAC. Please follow this steps to understand my problem. Start XCode. Click on Help Menu - Select Developer Documentation from the toolbar of window - Click on Home - & select iPhone OS 3.2 Library On the left side of screen - you can see Cocoa Touch Layer Category under Frameworks Select UIKit from it. On right side you will have - ToolbarSeach - as an first one link on it. Click on it. After clicking on it - You will see an option of "Open Project in xCode" on the title. Click on it & save the project to open it. Now, Click on run to execute this sample code. After compilation - it will give you two errors. something like this - "Interface Builder is unable to open documents of type iPad XIB." I don't know why this error is disturbing me? What should be solution to resolve it? Sagar.

• WCF Named Pipe IPC

  I have been trying to get up to speed on Named Pipes this week. The task I am trying to solve with them is that I have an existing windows service that is acting as a device driver that funnels data from an external device into a database. Now I have to modify this service and add an optional user front end (on the same machine, using a form of IPC) that can monitor the data as it passes between the device and the DB as well as send some commands back to the service. My initial ideas for the IPC were either named pipes or memory mapped files. So far I have been working through the named pipe idea using WCF Tutorial Basic Interprocess Communication . My idea is to set the Windows service up with an additional thread that implements the WCF NamedPipe Service and use that as a conduit to the internals of my driver. I have the sample code working, however I can not get my head around 2 issues that I am hoping that someone here can help me with: In the tutorial the ServiceHost is instantiated with a typeof(StringReverser) rather than by referencing a concrete class. Thus there seems to be no mechanism for the Server to interact with the service itself (between the host.Open() and host.Close() lines). Is it possible to create a link between and pass information between the server and the class that actually implements the service? If so, how? If I run a single instance of the server and then run multiple instance of the clients, it seems that each client gets a separate instance of the service class. I tried adding some state information to the class implementing the service and it was only retained within the instance of the named pipe. This is possibly related to the first question, but is there anyway to force the named pipes to use the same instance of the class that is implementing the service? Finally, any thoughts on MMF vs Named Pipes? Thanks for you help

• Android app resets on orientation change, best way to handle?

  So I am making a basic chess app to play around with some various elements of android programming and so far I am learning a lot, but this time I am lost. When the orientation of the emulator changes the activity gets reset. Based on my research the same thing will happen anytime the application is paused/interrupted, ie. keyboard change, phone call, hitting the home key etc. Obviously, it is not viable to have a chess game constantly reset, so once again I find myself needing to learn how to fix this problem. My research brings up a few main things, overriding the onPaused method in my Activity, listening for Orientation, Keyboard changes in my manifest (via android:configChanges), using Parcelables, or Serialization. I have looked up a lot of sample code using Pacelables, but to be honest it is too confusing. Maybe coming back tomorrow with fresh eyes will be beneficial, but right now the more I look at Parcelables the less sense it makes. My application utilizes a Board object, which has 64 Cell Objects(in an 8x8 2D array), and each cell has a Piece Object, either an actual piece or null if the space is empty. Assuming that I use either Parcelable or Serialization I am assuming that I would have to Parcelize or Serialize each class, Board, Cell, and Piece. First and foremost, is Parcelable or Serialization even the right thing to be looking at for this problem? If so is either Parcelable or Serializable preferred for this? And am I correct in assuming that each of the three objects would have to be Parceled/Serialized? Finally, does anybody have a link to a simple to understand Parcelable tutorial? Anything to help me understand, and stop further headaches down the road when my application expands even further. Any help would be appreciated.

• LSI 9285-8e and Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 duplicate enclosure ID and slot numbers

  I am working with 2 x Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 chassis connected to a single LSI 9285-8e card in a Supermicro 1U host. There are 28 drives in each chassis for a total of 56 drives in 28 RAID1 mirrors. The problem I am running in to is that there are duplicate slots for the 2 chassis (the slots list twice and only go from 0 to 27). All the drives also show the same enclosure ID (ID 36). However, MegaCLI -encinfo lists the 2 enclosures correctly (ID 36 and ID 65). My question is, why would this happen? Is there an option I am missing to use 2 enclosures effectively? This is blocking me rebuilding a drive that failed in slot 11 since I can only specify enclosure and slot as parameters to replace a drive. When I do this, it picks the wrong slot 11 (device ID 46 instead of device ID 19). Adapter #1 is the LSI 9285-8e, adapter #0 (which I removed due to space limitations) is the onboard LSI. After getting in contact with a very knowledgeable Supermicro tech, they provided us with a tool called Xflash (doesn't appear to be readily available on their FTP). The first 2 enclosures logical ID is partially masked out where the 3rd one (which has a correct unique enclosure ID) is not. We pointed this out to Supermicro and were able to confirm that this address is supposed to be set during manufacturing and there was a problem with a certain batch of these enclosures where the logical ID was not set. We believe that the RAID controller is determining the ID based on the logical ID and since our first 2 enclosures have the same logical ID, they get the same enclosure ID. We also confirmed that 0000007F is the default which comes from LSI as an ID. The next pointer that helps confirm this could be a manufacturing problem with a run of JBODs is the fact that all 6 of the enclosures that have this problem begin with 00E. I believe that between 00E8 and 00EE Supermicro forgot to program the logical IDs correctly and neglected to recall or fix the problem post production. Fortunately for us, there is a tool to manage the WWN and logical ID of the devices from Supermicro: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/utility/ExpanderXtools_Lite/. Our next step is to schedule a shutdown of these JBODs (after data migration) and reprogram the logical ID and see if it solves the problem. Update 06/28/12 #2: I just discovered this FAQ at Supermicro while Google searching for "lsi 0000007f": http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=11805. I still don't understand why, in the last several times we contacted Supermicro, they would have never directed us to this article :\

The system currently has Active MQ as a JMS provider.My job is to fed the messages coming from JMS to the XMPP server and then develope XMPP client on android 2.0 which will listen and show notification to the events pushed by the server. I have following concerns(which might sound foolish) 1.How do I push the events from JMS to the XMPP server which will in turn push them on android? 2.Which XMPP server implementation I should use?I have 3 options * Openfire: Very mature (was a commercial product), but sounds like it's heavyweight, written in Java * Prosody: Lightweight and easy to use, written in Lua.   Here's what I've done... I used wsdl.exe to create a .cs class for my wsdl service connection. I made a Visual Studio project to compile the .cs into a dll having namespace CalculatorService (CalculatorService.dll). Successful thus far. I created an asp.net project added my namespace import: %@ Import Namespace="CalculatorService" % I right-clicked on the project, clicked Add Reference, found my .dll, added it, built the project, checked /bin to ensure my dll was there (and it was). % 'I called the namespace:' Dim calcService As New CalculatorService.CalculatorService() 'called the function from the service' Dim xmlResult = calcService.GetSVS_ItemTable_XML("", "", "", "", "", "") 'printed the result' Response.Write(xmlResult) % All is well LOCALLY while debugging. It found the CalculatorService, connected to it, got the XML and displayed it. I then wanted to put it on the web so I built and published my project: under "Copy" - Only files needed to run this application...selected!   Using the above technologies, I want to create a PDF, store it in my db, and email it. All with the click of one button. I also want to call it up and have it be able to display with a hyperlink. I am very new to FPDF. Therefore, I am trying to start off very slowly. I began with this link stackoverflow Q I put both parts of his code into the same page and tried with separate pages. I made the suggested changes/additions and even did a line by line comparison. I still get the message, "format error: not a PDF or corrupted" If I just $pdf-Output(); I get the pdf to display. It's either the way the string is being Output, or it's the header() function. It's not the storage method, unless my column setup is incorrect. BUt a blob is a blob, right?   hi guys, I was wondering if there is someway to embed a Flash Shockwave Object or .SWF file in MS Powerpoint (Presentation) 2007 and higher version. ie inside ".pptx" formats . by embed i mean when i save the presentation,close it . i wont be needing the the .swf file again.that way i can share the Presentations with others. If i use this link Insert-Flash-Into-PowerPoint-2007,it works but when i save and close the presentation,the swf file doesnt get embeded. (Note:if i do the same with a .ppt file,it works correctly.) I know we can embed the swf inside powerpoint presentation version 2003 ie.".ppt" format. but couldn't do the same in .pptx format. Also is it possible to embed .swf file in .pptx using OpenXML format? I tried to rename the ".pptx" file to ".zip" and added the ".swf" in media folder. and then renamed it back to ".pptx",but when opened in Powerpoint,it gave error about unreadable content or corruption. I had read somewhere that its kind of strategy from MS not to provide this kind of support for Adobe Swf file / ActiveX object. and as of now the feature is not supported. Testability overall is important, but I wouldn't sacrifice design simplicity and clarity to be able to add another type of test that doesn't lead to too much gain over the test cases already possible with a simpler design. If a design choice does off more testability please include an example (pseudo code is fine) of the type of test it can now offer so I can make my decision if I value that type of extra test enough.   Setup I have multiple links on a page with the class location_link Each Links rel attribute is equal to a city state combo (i.e.,Omaha, NE) Once the page is loaded, a JavaScript function loops through all of the location_link items and binds a click event to them using jQuery. This click event fires a call to the Fancybox constructor that is supposed to show a Google Map of the location that link is associated with The Problem: Whenever I click on one of the "location links", I get the following error message: The requested content cannot be loaded.   Hello, I am currently developing a site that I make use of two jQuery plugins: Flickr jquery plugin (http://code.google.com/p/jquery-flickr/) Slimbox (http://code.google.com/p/slimbox/) The first plugin is used to pull in flickr photos from a specific account. These photos are displayed as thumbnails on the page. I am then using the second plugin to display larger views of these images. Because the flickr photos are fetched when the page loads, I am calling the Slimbox 2 function like this: $(document).ready(function() { $("#Flickr").flickr(); //Call Flickr plugin $(window).bind('load', function() { $("#Flickr a").slimbox();//Call Slimbox2 }); }); On first testing this seemed to have worked perfectly. I tested multiple versions of FireFox, IE7, IE6, and Safari. Everything is great. However, the Slimbox lightbox effest does not work in IE8. However, if I put IE8 into compatibility mode, everything works as expected. I would like to avoid forcing compatibility mode. There are no javascript errors and I am at a loss for testing. The real answer is to make this dll so that fits into Delphi as true Delphi code, and not a dll clip on. So we can make objects that use dot net in Delphi. Because I’m not an assembly freak, I’m freaking out a little with a wee sweek for help! 1/ How do I link the asm code with the data info at the bottom of this code. Can some one show me which calls to look for to make this link to data. 2/ I need to find the beginning of all the procedures and functions, but I cannot find a ‘RET’ statement.   I'm having a bit of trouble loading pages into an already-existing colorbox. I have a colorbox opened by clicked a link that is bound by the following code: $("a.ajaxAddPage").colorbox({ onComplete: function(){ $('ul#addPage li a').click(function() { $.fn.colorbox({href: $(this).attr('href')}); return false; }); } }); The following HTML is loaded into that colorbox via AJAX: <div class='colorboxWindow'> <ul id='addPage'> <li><a href='addCat.php'>Add Category</a></li> <li><a href='addPage.php' class='current'>Add New Page</a></li> <li><a href='addPage2.php'>Add Another Page</a></li> </ul> <h3>Add New Page...</h3> </div> I'm trying to have each of those 3 links open in the current colorbox when they are clicked. With my onComplete binding above, this works for the first click, but the next click just opens like a normal page. If I add another onComplete to the $.fn.colorbox() call in the above code, then the 2nd click will also load in the same colorbox, but the 3rd will not. Is there a way to just bind all future clicks to open in the same colorbox? I don't know much about event binding yet. If you need clarification, please ask.

• CSS background-images and Z-Index problem

  Hope someone has an easy answer on this. I have a header image which is just a 75px high gradient with a fade on the bottom. I have it set as the background image on my header and I want to throw in a left-sidebar on my page. There is a transparency on the header image and when I have my sidebar I can't get it to sit behind the header. You can see in this screenshot: link text The green sidebar won't "sit" behind the header. I have the header z-index set to 99 and the sidebar to 1. I tried the reverse to make sure I didn't mix up my numbers but that didn't work. Both are absolutely positioned. I'm attaching their CSS selectors in the hopes someone has an easy answer.   I am trying to log a simple string to a log file. I only need Category, message and timestamp. Thus I have configured app.config like this: <listeners> <add name="Flat File Destination" fileName="C:\Log\Phoenix.Common.Tests\Debug.log" header="-----------------------------------------------------------------" formatter="Text Formatter" footer="" rollFileExistsBehavior="Increment" rollInterval="Midnight" rollSizeKB="0" timeStampPattern="yyyy-MM-dd" listenerDataType="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Configuration.RollingFlatFileTraceListenerData, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.TraceListeners.RollingFlatFileTraceListener, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35"/> </listeners> <formatters> <add name="Text Formatter" template="Category: {category} Message: {message} Timestamp: {timestamp}" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging.Formatters.TextFormatter, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Logging, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35"/> </formatters> But I get all kind of additional stuff in my log file: Priority: 50 EventId: 50 Severity: Verbose Title:Testing Log Machine: DK-PC-P4740 App Domain: TestAppDomain: 80803a4f-8e18-47bb-901e-cdac784c8041 ProcessId: 6492 Process Name: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\QTAgent32.exe How do I avoid this additional stuff? Can someone send me a link to an example that only log the message into the log file? /Thanks
