• Character set issues with Oracle Gateways, SQL Server, and Application Express

  I am migrating data from a Oracle on VMS that accesses data on SQL Server using heterogeneous services (over ODBC) to Oracle on AIX accessing the SQL Server via Oracle Gateways (dg4msql). The Oracle VMS database used the WE8ISO8859P1 character set. The AIX database uses WE8MSWIN1252. The SQL Server database uses "Latin1-General, case-insensitive, accent-sensitive, kanatype-insensitive, width-insensitive for Unicode Data, SQL Server Sort Order 52 on Code Page 1252 for non-Unicode Data" according to sp_helpsort. The SQL Server databases uses nchar/nvarchar or all string columns. In Application Express, extra characters are appearing in some cases, for example 123 shows up as %001%002%003. In sqlplus, things look ok but if I use Oracle functions like initcap, I see what appear as spaces between each letter of a string when I query the sql server database (using a database link). This did not occur under the old configuration. I'm assuming the issue is that an nchar has extra bytes in it and the character set in Oracle can't convert it. It appears that the ODBC solution didn't support nchars so must have just cast them back to char and they showed up ok. I only need to view the sql server data so I'm open to any solution such as casting, but I haven't found anything that works. Any ideas on how to deal with this? Should I be using a different character set in Oracle and if so, does that apply to all schemas since I only care about one of them.

  What do you do when your team leader does not know why the following is wrong: a.SomeProp = a.SomeProp; // no funny side-effects, plain old property He claims 15 years of programming experience, and 7 years of C#/.NET. To me, someone of 3-6 months experience should know this. What I have done: Tried to make him understand why it is wrong. He told me not to criticize him. Told him it's not about criticism, but project risk. He got upset with me. I have addressed the risk of this person with our manager (few weeks back). I have addressed my concerns with this person with our manager several times, since 1 month after I started there (7 months now). Currently, I just feel like just not going back to work... I hardly have any nails left, and this is really just the tip of the iceberg. As nothing has changed after I have spoken to the manager for the last 6 months, I feel like I need to make some sort of ultimatum. Do you have any suggestions? PS: Please do not make this subjective. I have no need for arguing. The level of incompetence is pretty clear. I just need some advice before going insane. Update: Thanks for all the answers (trying to update before close, buggers). I think I will forward this thread to our manager :) Update 2: I sent my manager another mail with my concerns, and a link to this question. Awaiting response.

• appstats broken filename in callstack

  When I visit appstats page and expand callstack, the file path has <path[N]> prefix. So click the file link then emit no such file or directory error. Actually I'm using appengine_django and two path was inserted to sys.path. I did it same again at appengine_django.py but also failed. Maybe some custom setting with appengine_config.py can solve this problem but doesn't figure out how to fix it. What can I do?

• gcc: Do I need -D_REENTRANT with pthreads?

  On Linux (kernel 2.6.5) our build system calls gcc with -D_REENTRANT. Is this still required when using pthreads? How is it related to gcc -pthread option? I understand that I should use -pthread with pthreads, do I still need -D_REENTRANT? On a side note, is there any difference that you know off between the usage of REENTRANT between gcc 3.3.3 and gcc 4.x.x ? When I use -pthread gcc option I can see that _REENTRANT gets defined. Will omitting -D_REENTRANT from command line make any difference, for example could some objects be compiled without multithreaded support and then linked into binary that uses pthreads and will cause problems? I assume it should be ok just to use: g++ -pthread > echo | g++ -E -dM -c - > singlethreaded > echo | g++ -pthread -E -dM -c - > multithreaded > diff singlethreaded multithreaded 39a40 > #define _REENTRANT 1 We're compiling multiple static libraries and applications that link with the static libraries, both libraries and application use pthreads. Could you point me to links or references discussing the use in recent version of kernel/gcc/pthread? Clarification: At the moment we're using -D_REENTRANT and -lpthread, I assume I can replace them with just g++ -pthread, looking at man gcc it sets the flags for both preprocessor and linker. Any thoughts?

In first scenario I am getting myObj(allocated) from other file so I have to release in my own method. (as per any C/C++ language library ,like strdup will return string duplicate which will realase later by developer not by strdup method). In second scenario I am getting myObj(allocated) from otherObj.m file so otherObj.m file is responsible to release that allocated memory(mean autorelease)? Is it right? • Asp.net MVC Calling ActionLink in Codebehind

  I am new to asp.net and MVC, so please go easy on me. :) I have successfully made a small MVC application. There is a database that contains a table named "Entry" and I have made Controllers for this. Also I have a view for Details and list. This works fin. My problem is in my index page. (not the view Index, but the frontpage). There I dynamically build a TreeView as a menu, with some Categories. In this menu there is under the categories there is my Entries from the database. They show up fin. I insert the entries as a TreeNode what holds the entry id and so forth. What I want is: that the entries in my treeview work as a link to the Detail view of the Entry. So if I click on a entry in the TreeView it will show the Detail page of this Entry. But I can't make it work. How to I use the <%= Html.ActionLink() % in codebehind? Or is it this the wrong way? If calling the view or controller in codebehind is the wrong way to do it. Then how? Thanks in advance.

• QWebView not loading external resources

  Hi. I'm working on a kiosk web browser using Qt and PyQt4. QWebView seems to work quite well except for one quirk. If a URL fails to load for any reason, I want to redirect the user to a custom error page. I've done this using the loadFinished() signal to check the result, and change the URL to the custom page if necessary using QWebView.load(). However, any page I attempt to load here fails to pull in external resources like CSS or images. Using QWebView.load() to set the initial page at startup seems to work fine, and clicking any link on the custom error page will result in the destination page loading fine. It's just the error page that doesn't work. I'm really not sure where to go next. I've included the source for an app that will replicate the problem below. It takes a URL as a command line argument - a valid URL will display correctly, a bad URL (eg. • Command /Developer/usr/bin/dsymutil failed with exit code 10

  I am getting the above error message randomly (so far as I can tell) on iPhone projects. Occasionally it will go away upon either: Clean Restart XCode Reboot Reinstall XCode But sometimes it won't. When it won't the only solution I have found is to take all the source material, import it into a new project, and then redo all the connections in IB. Then I'm good until it strikes again. Anybody have any suggestions? [update 20091030] I have tried building both debug and release versions, both full and lite versions. I've also tried switching the debug symbols from DWARF with external dSYM file to DWARF and to stabs. Clean builds in all formats make no differences. Permission repairs change nothing. Setting up a new user has no effect. Same error on the builds. Thanks for the suggestions! [Update 20091031] Here's an easier and (apparently) reliable workaround. It hinges upon the discovery that the problem is linked to a target not a project In the same project file, create a new target Option-Drag (copy) all the files from the BAD target 'Copy Bundle Resources' folder to the NEW target 'Copy Bundle Resources' folder Repeat (2) with 'Compile Sources' and 'Link Binary With Libraries' Duplicate the Info.plist file for the BAD target and name it correctly for the NEW target. Build the NEW target! [Update 20100222] Apparently an IDE bug, now apparently fixed, although Apple does not allow direct access to the original bug of a duplicate. I can no longer reproduce this behaviour, so hopefully it is dead, dead, dead.

• jQuery AJAX Character Encoding Problem

  Hi everyone, I'm currently coding a French website. There's a schedule page, where a link on the side can be used to load another day's schedule. http://aquate.us/film/horaire.html (At the moment, only the links for November 13th and November 14th work) Here's the JS I'm using to do this: <script type="text/javascript"> function load(y) { $.get(y,function(d) { $("#replace").html(d); mod(); }); } function mod() { $("#dates a").click(function() { y = $(this).attr("href"); load(y); return false; }); } mod(); </script> The actual AJAX works like a charm. My problem lies with the response to the request. Because it is a French website, there are many accented letters. I'm using the ISO-8859-15 charset for that very reason. However, in the response to my AJAX request, the accents are becoming ?'s because the character encoding seems to be changed back to UTF-8. How do I avoid this? I've already tried adding some PHP at the top of the requested documents to set the character set: <?php header('Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-15'); ?> But that doesn't seem to work either. Any thoughts? Also, while any of you are looking here...why does the rightmost column seem to become smaller when a new page is loaded, causing the table to distort and each <li> within the <td> to wrap to the next line? • Returning UTF-8 from a web service

  Previous: Returning info from a Web Service I thought the previous answer made 100% sense, and I though I was out of the woods, but it still fails. An app I'm working with still seems to think what is being returned from the web service is ASCII encoded. Debugging it shows: <Envelope><Body><ReturnOneResponse><ReturnOneResult>&lt;xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"&gt;&lt;Entry&gt;&lt;Symbol&gt;PACR&lt;/Symbol&gt;&lt;Company&gt;Pacer International, Inc.&lt;/Company&gt;&lt;MarketCap&gt;$229.0M&lt;/MarketCap&gt;&lt;PE&gt;18.7&lt;/PE&gt;&lt;Price&gt;6.56&lt;/Price&gt;&lt;Change&gt;0.42&lt;/Change&gt;&lt;PctChange&gt;6.84%&lt;/PctChange&gt;&lt;YTDChange&gt;107.59%&lt;/YTDChange&gt;&lt;/Entry&gt;</ReturnOneResult></ReturnOneResponse></Body></Envelope> So everything being returned from the web service seems to be changed into ASCII, and seems to refuse to read as UTF-8. Since my previous code in the above link, I also changed my string invocation: string value = @""; Still, that didn't help. Any other ideas?

Clicking the LinkButton doesn't work. I get a postback and the grid is shown as empty and no record is deleted. Seems like an empty databinding. I have tried to create a custom OnClick, OnCommand event for the LinkButton, but neither are fired. The OnRowCommand isn't fired either. I don't manually DataBind in the codebehind.

• Adding a navigation bar to a web view in a tab bar app

  I've built the tab bar application in IB, with three tabs. The third tab happily displays a UIWebview where you can browse. The only thing missing is a back button, as not all web pages supply such a link. I need a navigation bar hooked up properly to the correct classes. I'm still a bit unsure about exactly how the hierarchy should look in interface builder and how to hook it up properly. Currently, the third tab is hooked up to a referencing outlet called 'webnews' in the class 'thirdviewcontroller', and the UIWebView (under a normal IUView in the hierarchy, which in turn is under the third tab bar controller) is connected to the webnews outlet. How do I make the navbar control the webview, and do I add code to the thirdviewcontroller.m that lets the navbar on the view control the webview 'back' function? What do I hook up as the delegate for it? Currently I have an app delegate, but that's hooked up to the tab bar. I'm not really after specific code as much as a general 'how it works' clue :) (Unless I can just add the navbar dynamically to the functioning app... but I don't think addSubView on viewWillAppear {} in thirdviewcontroller.m will create the proper functionality?) If I were to guess at the simplest solution, I'd guess create a navbarcontroller.h/.m, slap a navbar on the view in IB, connect the third tab to navbarcontroller, connect the navbar to the webview (?) and move the webnews outlet to navbarcontroller.h, and connect the webview to it. But I don't quite have the nerve to try, better to ask advice first.

  I am building my portfolio website simply using HTML, Flash, and the Mootools Javascript framework. I have decided to implement a theme changing feature using Javascript and cookies. When the user clicks on the "Change Theme" link, a mediaboxAdvanced lightbox appears, containing a real-time form which allows you to change the theme on the portfolio. • JQuery fadeIn() moving other CSS elements on fadeIn()

  Hi, I've just been learning some jQUery to get a basic image gallery going on a website I'm creating for a hotel but it's currently not going to plan. I've got it so the arrows will cycle through images (no animation yet) but I decided that the arrows should fade in when the image is hovered over and fade out when not but this is messing up the CSS somehow. The arrows start faded out by calling: $('.arrowRight').fadeOut(0);$('.arrowLeft').fadeOut(0); at the start of the jQuery ready() function. This is fine, but when you hover over the image and the arrows fade in, the image shifts to the right and I don't know why. I suppose it could be because the left arrow now fading in means it is getting pushed over by it but the arrow has the following css: position:relative; top: -90px; left: 25px; Should a relative element be able to alter a normal element's position? If you need to try it out, just hover over the large (placeholder) image and they image will jump across when the arrows fade in and jump back when they fade out. Any ideas why this is happening?   This question is more UI/Design-ish than hard-core programming is. Background: I've been coding in VIM/C++/OpenGL for a long time. I've come to realize that this (VIM/C++/OpenGL) isn't the way to learn about programming fancy/cool-looking/futuristic UIs; and that the design of such UIs belongs more so in the artistic/designer world of Flash. Anyway, I currently have a machine with MacOSX. What software should I install? What book should I read to learn about the artistic/design side of these futuristic UIs? [It's okay if the tools to design them are mouse clicking + graphical rather than coding based]. Question: what software packages + books to read to learn about creating fancy-looking / futuristic UIs in flash? Thanks! EDIT: PS these questions seem to get closed frequently. • WebSVN with VisualSVN Server, anyone gotten authentication to work?

  I have a VisualSVN Server installed on a Windows server, serving several repositories. Since the web-viewer built into VisualSVN server is a minimalistic subversion browser, I'd like to install WebSVN on top of my repositories. The problem, however, is that I can't seem to get authentication to work. Ideally I'd like my current repository authentication as specified in VisualSVN to work with WebSVN, so that though I see all the repository names in WebSVN, I can't actually browse into them without the right credentials. By visiting the cached copy of the topmost link on this google query you can see what I've found so far that looks promising. (the main blog page seems to have been destroyed, domain of the topmost page I'm referring to is the-wizzard.de) There I found some php functions I could tack onto one of the php files in WebSVN. I followed the modifications there, but all I succeeded in doing was make WebSVN ask me for a username and password and no matter what I input, it won't let me in. Unfortunately, php and apache is largely black magic to me. So, has anyone successfully integrated WebSVN with VisualSVN hosted repositories?

• Unable to install Management Studio Express 2008 due to Visual Studio 2008 installation

  I am attempting to install Managment Studio Express 2008 on a Win7 system that already has Visual Studio 2008 installed. I have installed VS 2008 SP1, which results in the About box for Visual Studio giving a version of 9.0.30792.1 SP. When I attempt the Management Studio installation I see a message that tells me that I must install SP1. However, this is already installed. After a fair bit of searching I came across the link below, where someone had commented with a command line option for the installation executable that forced it to skip the check. However, this simply pushed the error to later in the installation process. http://www.thushanfernando.com/index.php/2008/08/10/fix-rule-previous-releases-of-microsoft-visual-studio-2008-failed/. This seems to be a perennial problem for Microsoft. I can't remember a time when I've painlessly installed both Management Studio and Visual Studio. I can't imagine that this is an unusual combination, after all! Anyone had any success in solving this problem before I take on the day-long task of uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio and all its associated bits?

• Horizontal menu vertical padding on anchor tag doesn't take affect

I did try this out with a float instead of a display:inline on the list item and it worked as I expected it to. So I guess if I had a secondary question it would be what is the difference between a float:left; and a display:inline? I was reading the float spec and it sounds like a float is still a box online inline so somewhat like inline-block? I appreciate any input, this isn't really something I need to know to finish a project or anything, but I would like to know why. Thanks Levi

• Don't Understand Sql Server Error

  I have a table of users (User), and need to create a new table to track which users have referred other users. So, basically, I'm creating a many-to-many relation between rows in the same table. So I'm trying to create table UserReferrals with the columns UserId and UserReferredId. I made both columns a compound primary key. And both columns are foreign keys that link to User.UserID. Since deleting a user should also delete the relationship, I set both foreign keys to cascade deletes. When the user is deleted, any related rows in UserReferrals should also delete. But this gives me the message: 'User' table saved successfully 'UserReferrals' table Unable to create relationship 'FK_UserReferrals_User'. Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_UserReferrals_User' on table 'UserReferrals' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints. Could not create constraint. See previous errors. I don't get this error. A cascading delete only deletes the row with the foreign key, right? So how can it cause "cycling cascade paths"? Thanks for any tips.

• NoSuchMethod exception thrown in GWT

  I'm starting to get my feet wet in the latest Google Web Toolkit using the Eclipse plugin on OS X 10.5.8. So far I've been able to get the client up and running, which is great. The server, though, is a different matter. I'm trying to link to a .jar file that has some classes I want to use in a server ServiceImpl class, but it seems to have glommed onto a previous iteration of the .jar - I've added a method, rebuilt the jar, removed the jar from the libraries tab on the GWT project's build path (as well as on the exports) and reincluded the jar. No luck - I'm still getting: [WARN] Exception while dispatching incoming RPC call com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.UnexpectedException: Service method 'public abstract org.gwtapplication.client.LWDocument org.gwtapplication.client.DocumentService.getDocument()' threw an unexpected exception: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.externalmodel.MyReallyValidClass.toSomething()Ljava/lang/String; at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RPC.encodeResponseForFailure(RPC.java:378) at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RPC.invokeAndEncodeResponse(RPC.java:581) ...
