• Different block sizes for partition and underlying logical disk on HP Raid Controller (Linux)

  Following links collected in this thread I started to check blockdev and found the following output indicating different sizes for partition c0d9p1 and the underlying device (c0d9): [root@machine ~]# blockdev --report /dev/cciss/c0d9 RO RA SSZ BSZ StartSec Size Device rw 256 512 4096 0 3906963632 /dev/cciss/c0d9 [root@machine ~]# blockdev --report /dev/cciss/c0d9p1 RO RA SSZ BSZ StartSec Size Device rw 256 512 2048 1 3906959039 /dev/cciss/c0d9p1 We have a lot of small files, so yes the block size is smaller than normal. The device is a logical driver on an HP P410 raid controller, simple disk without any raid - RAID 0 on one disk to be precise. (Please note that above configuration is a feature not a bug). Therefore, I have the following questions. Can the above discrepancy in the block size affect disk performance? Can I control the block size using hpacucli?

  I have a j2ee application hosted on jboss and linux platform. When I try to access the application , I see following error in server.log file. ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified When I point the same jboss instance to a different schema, the application works fine. I tried to go through few forum and found that the NLS parameter settings are fine. Can anyone help. • grep pattern interpretted differently in 2 different systems with same grep version

  We manufacture a linux appliance for data centers, and all are running fedora installed from the same kickstart process. There are different hardware versions, some with IDE hard drives and some SCSI, so the filesystems may be at /dev/sdaN or /dev/hdaN. We have a web interface into these appliances that show disk usage, which is generated using "df | grep /dev/*da". This generally works for both hardware versions, giving an output like follows: /dev/sda2 5952284 3507816 2137228 63% / /dev/sda5 67670876 9128796 55049152 15% /data /dev/sda1 101086 11976 83891 13% /boot However, for one machine, we get the following result from that command: Binary file /dev/sda matches It seems that its grepping files matching /dev/*da for an unknown pattern for some reason, only on this box that is seemingly identical in grep version, packages, kernel, and hardware. I switched the grep pattern to be "/dev/.da" and everything works as expected on this troublesome box, but I hate not knowing why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas? Or perhaps some other tests to try?

• Why does cd print when run in command substitution?

  If I use the 'cd' BASH built-in in a command substitution, it prints extra stuff to stdout, but only when piped to, eg., less. $ echo `cd .` # The output is a single newline, appended by echo. $ echo `cd .` | less # less displays: ESC]2;my.hostname.com - tmp/testenv^G (END) What's going on there? This behavior isn't documented in the bash man page for cd. Obviously, running just 'cd' in a command substitution is silly, but something like NEWDIR=`cd mypath; pwd` could be useful. I solved this by instead using NEWVAR=`cd mypath > /dev/null 2>&1; pwd` but I still want to know what's going on.   Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any idea in how to generate a signed CA cert and key using openssl? I have found this website (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/secure-create-certs.html) to generate the client and server certs for mysql server but the example is a self-signed certificate. I use the following command for running the server and client using openssl and the generated certs and keys: openssl s_server -accept 6502 -cert server-cert.pem -key server-key.pem -CAfile ca-cert.pem -www openssl s_client -connect 192.168.1.92:6502 -cert client-cert.pem -key client-key.pem -CAfile ca-cert.pem The error output I get is "Verify return code: 18 (self signed certificate)". • How to tell if PAE is hurting me?

  I have a couple of servers with 20-30 GB RAM that are running (a variant of) RHEL4. They are currently running the SMP i386 kernel, not x64, not even the hugemem kernel. This means LowMem is confined to < 1G, and thus dentry_cache and ext3_inode_cache to 100M or so each. How can I tell if this is a problem? • Can't adjust backlight on an Nvidia 335m GT

  I have a laptop mySN QMG6 / Chiligreen Mobilitas NW which is Quanta TW9 barebone with intel i3 and nvidia 335m GT onboard. On ubuntu distros 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 i had problem with changing screen backlight with nouveau and nvidia drivers. FN+F4/F5 buttons did not change my brightness. I tried to edit xorg.conf, adding Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Also tried to add some lines to grub acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor Neither worked for me. Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and... With nouveau driver my FN key works, and changes the brightness (is it a new 3.0.22 linux kernel, or patched nouveau driver, i don't know). This is a big step forward. But, when installing proprietary nvidia driver (295.33) FN button stops working and i can't change brightness. I also tried workaround with xorg and grub with no result. Tried to install acpi from apt - no result. Is there anything left to try? I really need that nvidia driver working with FN keys, as i would like to have a working 3D acceleration. P.S. Does the nouveau driver has 3d acceleration like nvidia drivers??? If there is need to provide some log data, please write what should i print, as i'm a bit new to Ubuntu. P.P.S. Same problems i had with other Linux distros (Mint, Fedora and others) P.P.P.S. Other FN buttons work with both drivers (Mute, VOL UP/DOWN, WiFi on/off, Bluetooth, Sleep, Start/Pause, Stop, Next/Prev song) Some new thoughts... CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_GENERIC=m could this be an issue? • Ubuntu turns off instead of suspend / sleeping

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 on my notebook as the main OS. How ever, I've been facing a serious problem: Every time I try to suspend it, or it just stays idle for a while, the computer shuts down, instead of suspending. It actually seems to be suspended, but when I press the button the awake it, it turns on, the open works are all lost. How can i fix this? P.s: On windows 7 the suspend / sleep resumes just fine. • Cannot run SSH or send commands to /etc/init.d/ssh

  When I attempt to execute any commands such as /etc/init.d/ssh restart or /etc/init.d/ssh start, I get no output. It just goes to the next command line (Ubuntu Hardy). I can even pass in junk parameters such as /etc/init.d/ssh asldkfjalskfdj and i get no warnings or error messages, it just goes to the next line. I can check in my processes: lsof -i :22 and don't see my ssh process. I also don't see my SSH process when i run: netstat -na --inet Any troubleshooting suggestions?

• Laptop wakes from sleep, once, due to audio controller (Windows 7)

  The laptop is a recent Dell XPS 15z and the problem is as follows (reproducible about 90% of tries): put laptop to sleep using either Start-Sleep or closing the lid laptop goes to sleep after about 5 seconds, but instantly wakes again showing a black screen (touching the keyboard or moving the mouse shows the login screen one normally gets after wake) login again, put laptop to sleep latop stays in sleep mode output of powercfg -lastwake after the first instant wake shows the audio controller is responsible. Why would that be, why only the first try, and how to fix this? • Fun with Sun Ray, 3D, Oracle VM x86 and SRIOV

  One of the things I like about my job is that I get to play around with stuff and make use of the technologies we work on in my teams. Sort of my own little playground. It allows me to study the products in great detail and put them to use in ways that individual product teams don't always intend them to be used for :) but that makes it fun. I have a lot of this set up at home because... work is sort of hobby and I just like to tinker with it. Anyway, a few weeks ago I was looking at my sun ray rig at home and how well 3D works. Google Earth and some basic opengl tests like glxspheres combined with virtualgl. It resulted in some very cool demos recorded with my little camera (sorry for the crappy quality of the video :-) : OVDC (soft client) on my mac Sun Ray 2FS Never mind the hickups during zoom, that's because I was using the scrollwheel on my mouse and I can't scroll uninterrupted :) Anyway, this is quite cool ! The setup for this was the following : Sun Ray on LAN, Sun Ray Server 5 latest installed on OL5.5 inside a VM running on Oracle VM 2.2 (hardware virt, with a virtual network (vif)) and the virtualgl rendering happened on another box (wopr5) that runs linux on a little atom D520 with an ION2 gpu. So network goes from Sun Ray to Sun Ray Server to wopr5 and back. Given that this is full screen 3D it puts a good amount of load on the network and it's pretty cool that SRS was just a VM :) So, separately, I had written a little blog entry about using sriov and oracle vm a while back. link to sriov blog entry Last night when I came home I wanted to do some more playing around with SRIOV and live migrate. To do this, I wanted to set up a VM with 2 network interfaces, one virtual network (vif) and then one that's one of the SRIOV virtual functions from my network card. Inside the guest they show as eth0 and eth1, and then bond them using a standard linux bonding device (bond0 here) with active active links. The goal here is that on live migrate, we would detach the VF (eth1 in guest in this case), the bond would then just hum along on eth0 (vif) we can live migrate the VM and then on the other server after the migrate completes we re-attach a VF to the VM there and eth1 pops up again and the bond uses both eth0/eth1 to do its work. So, to set this up, I figured, why not use my sun ray server VM because the 3D work generates a nice network load and is very latency/timing sensitive. In the end, I ran glxspheres on my sunray server (vm) displaying on my sun ray 2 fs and while that was running, I did my live migrate test of this vm (unplug pci VF, migrate, reconnect vf) and guess what, it just kept running :) veryyyyyy cool. now, it was supposed to, but it's always nice to see it actually work, for real. • Linux: multiple network connections - 3G/4G / Wifi / LAN / etc; how can i set a preferred network connection to use?

  I've been looking at how I can setup a laptop that has multiple network interfaces, but a problem exists if all the connections are active, i.e. 3G, WiFi and LAN are all connected, I would like it to default to LAN. I would like to set "weights" or "priority" to each connection, so that if the LAN is unplugged, it'll default to WiFi - if its in range and working, otherwise, it'll switch and use the 3G dongle; I've been looking around and I can see that the "metric" counter for route isn't being used for recent kernels. I thought that would be able to set the preferred gateway / connections - but according to the man page: man route: OUTPUT Metric The 'distance' to the target (usually counted in hops). It is not used by recent kernels, but may be needed by routing daemons. So I'm confused, are there any scripts / apps / anything that can detect active network connections, and by way of configuration, send my default gateway network traffic through that interface if its active / alive?

• NFS Client reports Permission Denied, Server reports Permission Granted

  I have two RedHat 4 Servers. The client is 4.6, the server is 4.5. I'm attempting to mount a share from the server, onto the client via NFS. The /etc/exports configuration is as follows: /opt/data/config bkup(rw,no_root_squash,async) /opt/data/db bkup(rw,no_root_squash,async) exportfs returns these (among other) shares, nfs is running according to ps output. I've been attempting to use autofs on the client, but have opted to just mount the share manually considering the issues I'm having. So, I issue the mount request: mount dist:/opt/data/config /mnt/config mount: dist:/opt/data/config failed, reason given by server: Permission denied Ok, so let's see what the server has to say for itself. May 6 23:17:55 dist mountd[3782]: authenticated mount request from bkup:662 for /opt/data/config (/opt/data/config) It says it allowed the mount to take place. How can I diagnose why the client and server are disagreeing on the result?

• How to set up secure cookie on weblogic server

  WebLogic Server allows a user to securely access HTTPS resources in a session that was initiated using HTTP, without loss of session data. To enable this feature, add AuthCookieEnabled="true" to the WebServer element in config.xml: <WebServer Name="myserver" AuthCookieEnabled="true"/>Setting AuthCookieEnabled to true, which is the default setting, causes the WebLogic Server instance to send a new secure cookie, _WL_AUTHCOOKIE_JSESSIONID, to the browser when authenticating via an HTTPS connection. Once the secure cookie is set, the session is allowed to access other security-constrained HTTPS resources only if the cookie is sent from the browser.Thus, WebLogic Server uses two cookies: the JSESSIONID cookie and the _WL_AUTHCOOKIE_JSESSIONID cookie. By default, the JSESSIONID cookie is never secure, but the _WL_AUTHCOOKIE_JSESSIONID cookie is always secure. A secure cookie is only sent when an encrypted communication channel is in use. • Frustrated where I am, but not sure where to go with my career [closed]

  I work (3 years now) as a lead developer for a team developing internal tools and websites for a customer account within large outsourcing company. I'm a self taught programmer and my previous incarnation was a 3rd line support guy, so I have a solid infrastructure knowledge. We use VB.Net/MSSQL/SSIS/SSRS ASP.NET (nTier) in house and I have about 8 years coding experience. Without going into too much detail, my boss is very ambitious and uses our team as his footing to get up the ladder. I've been in the team from the start and the only new dev's we have brought in have been people with a bit of VBA/VBScript experience, much to my chagrin, to bolster his empire. It's been a lot of hard work to bring them up to a standard, but there's still a lot for them to learn. This makes my life stressful as I always get the high profile/complex project work to do as other's simply cannot do it, or it'd take them twice/three times longer to do it. My boss is always seeking stuff for us to build for people who haven't asked for it, which usually get's thrown to me as I have the most experience and can pick new API's (etc) up quicker. He doesn't give us proper requirements, we don't get time to design properly before we code, he wants us to throw something (quick and dirty as he calls it) together so we can get it out ASAP. I take pride in my work so I like to do it properly, make my code clean, maintainable etc, and I train the other guys in the team to do the same. But, we always fall on our faces. The customer we drop the apps on say it doesn't do what they need (due to few requirements), or my boss doesn't like it/changes the spec, so we have to rework it, it get's drawn out, and it makes us and me look and feel like fools. We then get accused by boss of not being reactive enough to change. I've had enough. In order to get my skills and knowledge gap's filled, I've been reading Code Complete 2nd Ed (McConnell) and the Head First Design Patterns books. I'm forcing myself to move into C# from VB at home to broaden my horizons. I'm not sure where to go from here. I don't want to code all my life as I'd like to move into a higher level design/architects role at some point in time (I'm 35). Where do I/can I go from here?

• kill process but fail

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• Ubuntu Upstart script hangs on start and stop

  I have an upstart script that will start a custom jetty server. When I do sudo start [myservice] nothing happens. Subsequently, sudo status [myservice] show it as: [myservice] start/killed, process 3586. Here's the script in /etc/init/[myservice].conf: description "[description]" author "[my name and email]" start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [016] respawn expect fork script sudo -u www-data /path/to/grafserv-start.sh >> /tmp/upstart.log 2>&1 end-script And here is grafserv-start.sh: #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/java -Djetty.port=3070 -jar /path/to/grafserv/trunk/start.jar echo "Done starting GrafServ" I've tried redirecting the output of the script command to a tmp logfile, but that file is never created. When I start it, I just get a hang, until I ^C. Also, I tried running it with strace but that gave me a lot of stuff about sockets.

  I have noticed some error during the Linux boot. They seem to continue to occur after the boot adding lines to the log every few seconds. Once booted this normally does not appear to be causing any problems. However, around 1 in 10 boots results in a kernel panic and the computer has on two or three occasions suddenly rebooted after being powered on for a number of hours. I presume the cause of the reboot is a kernel panic as well. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had Ubuntu installed on the computer for around a year. I have googled around and not found anything useful. I have provided the kernel log lines and the output of smartctl. • Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

  I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).
