• MS Access Query Criteria Issue

  Currently I have a MS Access database query that has a field named FedEXDetTotal that totals 9 FedEX charge fields. I have another field that is from our inhouse system called "Total Charge". This is just a normal number field. I have created another Field in this query Diff: [FedEXDetTotal]-[Total Charge] This tells me the difference between the Fedex charge and what we actually charged. Everything works OK with this, but when I try to put the criteria 5 for the Diff field, when I run the query, I get a prompt saying "Enter Parameter Value FedEXDetTotal". Why is Access doing this? How do I get around this? I'm trying to start out with something simple(5), but what I really want is [Forms]![Dis].[txtbox_Diff].

• Virtual MS Sql Server not consuming enough CPU

  We have a Win2008 server 32 bit running as a virtual machine under ESX server. It has 6 CPU cores of 2Gz each and 4GB ram. It's running MS Sql Server 2008 R2 only. Problem: The server is heavily loaded and responds slowly. From windows taskmanagers point of view, it really looks overloaded, CPU wise. However, our external "cloud manager" says it's only using 2.5GHz worth of CPU-cycles in the cluster. I/O times looks "good". We have already tried to set the SQL servers number of working threads from 0(auto) to 256, to no effect. How to tune the VM host, guest or SQL to use all of it's alotted resources? Does it sound possible att all?

• Conflicts with MS Office temporary files when using Offline Folders on Vista

  We are using Offline Folders feature of Windows Vista to make files on network shares available when out of office. Mostly it is working, but every time I do a sync I get a lot of such errors: D500E7B8.tmp - A file was deleted on this computer and changed on the server while this computer was offline. There are hundreds of them. I always select all of them and choose resolution "Delete from both locations". But what is causing this and how can I avoid it? I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save. • MS Clear Screen Saver doesn't work

  I have a problem with really exotic thing - Microsoft Clear Screen Saver. As it's name suggests, it's a screen saver, that's transparent (MS posted it as a part of W2k Resource Kit). When you move the mouse/hit a key, the "lock" dialog appears. I would like to use this to view servers desktops without need to log in. I tested it on my XP's, and it works flawlessy. But on W2K3 servers it doesn't work. After the screensaver timeout, the error message is displayed: "The Clear Screen Saver cannot display the user desktop after the workstation has been locked"

• I can't open a Word file because it's too large

  I was creating a file with MS Word 2007 where I included a number of images. I didn't compress them as I was putting them into the file. I managed to save the file, but have not been able to reopen it ever since, as it says that I have exceeded the 32 MB limit. I am working on an old Macbook (OS X 10.4.11). I have tried to open the file in both OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but it just causes those programs to crash. Is there any way of reducing the file size without opening the document?

• XP OEM licensing when reinstalling Windows XP

  My wife has managed to buy a Dell laptop she was using at her ex-employer that just went bust. The problem with it is the OS (Windows XP) which takes ages to boot and is generally disproportionally slow to the hardware of the machine. So my aim is to sacrifice a day and reinstall it. The problem I am slightly worried about is the licensing/registration/activation hell. Apart from the sticker (with WinXP license key), the laptop has no other paperwork proving this license is legitimate. I believe this was originally an OEM license. Unfortunately, I don't have the the installation CD. This computer also has MS Office installed (which I would like to retain) but it none of MS Office apps would launch due to some obscure error complaining about lack of free disk space (which computer has plenty of). I have absolutely no clue what kind of license this MS Office was. And because the company has gone into the administration, there is no way of getting this information nor installable media. I believe that by buying the hardware I have also acquired the software which I can use as I see fit. Correct me if I'm wrong. Above said, my question would be: What is the easiest way of reinstalling the XP? By easiest I mean avoiding spending my time to prove Microsoft support I've got the right to use the software (insert your computer says noooo joke here) but still being able to get to fresh virgin activated legal state of the XP. I used to work as a sysadmin many years ago so I am not afraid of any technical difficulties. The same question applies to MS Office. I imagine the process would consist of backing up all the data, pulling some bits from the registry and using that on the fresh install. As for reinstall I'd expect to use some sort of OEM Windows repair CD from Dell, right? Are those freely available? My other box (HP) has such a thing and it can't be used on any other brand. I'm sure somebody had to go through this licensing hell and could share his/her tips. Thanks in advance.

• "This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Word previewer."

  The issue is: Outlook 2013 simply will not give a preview of Word (nor Excel) docs in attachments. Never had the issue with Outlook 2010. Using Outlook 2013 on Windows 7 64bit SSD with Word 2010. I did notice that "Microsoft Word" is not listed specifically in Trust Center attachment handling, could that be part of the problem? Excel, Visio, RTF and many more are there. Update: strange, search can be performed in Word attachments... but can't preview Word file. So, Outlook can 'see' Word docs but won't let us have that preview. • CSS overflow and word-wrap behaviour not helping me at all

  You can see how the filename field should look at http://www.plifk.com/henvic/114 and how it breaks the layout at http://www.plifk.com/henvic/159 If I used 108574main-neutron-star-and-a-very-bad-overfow-will-happen-here-so-sad.mpg I would not get an overflow, but in the first line "108574main-neutron-star-and-a-very-" and in the second line a "bad-overfow-happens.mpg". What can I do to avoid getting an overflow? Please know that I don't want to use quirks (like PHP's wordwrap, neither JavaScript if possible) and I've tried some ways in CSS with word-wrap, etc, but nothing worked out. I've also tried word-break: break-all (tested on Firefox only) but it didn't work also. Even the overflow: hidden; is not working... I'm not very familiar with web designing (indeed I try to do everything by the standards, etc) and I'm completely lost right now. The uncompressed CSS file can be seen at http://pastebin.ca/1802451 Now... I really understand that this is expected once the word-wrap is supposed for text, not characters. • Windows Media Encoder object not created in ASP.NET on MS Server 2003 64 bit

  Hello, I created (and used) a Windows Media Encoder object in Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition on MS Server 2003 64 bit. This worked fine. However, when I attempted to create the equivalent Windows Media Encoder object using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 on MS Server 2003 64 bit, the following exception was thrown: "Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {632B606A-BBC6-11D2-A329-006097C4E476} failed due to the following error: 80040154." It cannot be that the component isn’t registered, because both have a reference to the same WMEncEng.dll file. The Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 code also worked fine on XP 32 bit. Could it be a problem with permissions? Regardless, anyone have any ideas why this problem is occurring and, more importantly, how to resolve it? Thank you.   I want to do a riddle AI chatbot for my AI class. So i figgured the input to the chatbot would be : Something like : "It is blue, and it is up, but it is not the ceiling" Translation : <Object X> <blue> <up> <!ceiling> </Object X> (Answer : sky?) So Input is a set of characteristics (existing \ not existing in the object), output is a matched, most likely object. The domain will be limited to a number of objects, i could input all attributes myself, but i was thinking : How could I programatically build a database of characteristics for a word? Is there such a database available? How could i tag a word, how could i programatically find all it's attributes? I was thinking on crawling wikipedia, or some forum, but i can't see it build any reliable word tag database. Any ideas on how i could achieve such a thing? Any ideas on some literature on the subject? Thank you

  Background Created a script to count the frequency of words in a plain text file. The script performs the following steps: Count the frequency of words from a corpus. Retain each word in the corpus found in a dictionary. Create a comma-separated file of the frequencies. The script is at: http://pastebin.com/VAZdeKXs Problem The following lines continually cycle through the dictionary to match words: for i in $(awk '{if( $2 ) print $2}' frequency.txt); do grep -m 1 ^$i\$ dictionary.txt >> corpus-lexicon.txt; done It works, but it is slow because it is scanning the words it found to remove any that are not in the dictionary. The code performs this task by scanning the dictionary for every single word. (The -m 1 parameter stops the scan when the match is found.) Question How would you optimize the script so that the dictionary is not scanned from start to finish for every single word? The majority of the words will not be in the dictionary. Thank you!

  There are 5 steps in this job. First job is an SSIS Package store, second to fifth are file system jobs. We configured all jobs to use Windows Authentication. Under Run As, we specified a user account which was created under SecurityCredentials and SQL Server AgentProxiesSSIS Package execution. The job runs without any problems with this user account. We then proceeded to configure the job to use a service account instead. Service account was specified under SecurityCredentials and SQL Server AgentProxiesSSIS Package Execution. • 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem: csrss.exe

  Hi all, I just booted up my Samsung N120 netbook (with Windows XP Home SP3) and a dialog box came up with a command prompt window behind it. The dialog box is titled 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem and the message is as follows: C:\DOCUME~1\SAMSUNG\csrss.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0544 IP:0117 OP:63 00 64 00 34 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. This only started on my most recent boot-up. One thing to note is that when I downloaded the Dropbox installer and opened it up, Panda Cloud Antivirus detected a suspicious file, which was csrss.exe and "neutralized it." However, an actual virus or trojan was not detected immediately before the file was detected and neutralized. Just under two weeks ago, a trojan and two viruses were detected for some odd reason. (I only went to website I knew and I do not torrent or browse adult sites.) Anyhow, the two viruses came up in temporary files and the trojan was "neutralized." Anyways, the main question is: How can I repair the csrss.exe file such that Windows XP starts up properly? A screenshot could be posted upon request. Thanks in advance!

  Hi ! There has been a power loss on our server and i cannot start the SQL service because the master DB is corrupted (as the log states). I found many articles recommending running the setup.exe with optional parameters: This is what I did: I've downloaded SQLEXPR32.EXE from MS page and ran it The first problem was, that it extracted all the setup files and started the default installation procedure. (which was unuseful for me as I need those params). If I canceled it, all the extracted files disappeared. That's why I decided to copy the extracted files somewhere and than cancel the default installation. Now I'm trying to run the setup.exe from the extraction: setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=xxxxx it asks me if I want to rewrite the system db, which is what I need, but then while installing I get this error: *An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'SqlRun_SQL.msi'* Then it tries to install something and it states: cannot install because the same instance name already exists. But I don't want to install a new instance .. Any idea how to solve this, please? Thank you in advance !

  We've migrated a client from google apps to an MS Exchange 2010 SP2 on-premise setup. The setup /prepareAD went well, and the software was installed with the Administrator account. We've used the Exchange Management Console to setup mailboxes and had to google up the appropriate workarounds such as going into each users Advanced Security Settings and selecting "include inheritable permissions from this object's parents", and changing their logon-to from specific machines to "all computers" so that they can connect to Outlook Web Access, and in turn so their Outlook 2007-2010 clients can connect to Exchange. Sending and receiving emails are working well. Now that all this is in place, we can create Dynamic Distrubution Lists with no problem, but as soon as we try and create a DISTRIBUTION LIST, either in the EMC or the Exchange PowerShell, we get an error. As the error message in the powershell is more verbose, I include this if anyone can suggest how we remedy this: [PS] C:\Windows\system32new-DistributionGroup -Name 'projects' -SamAccountName 'projects' -Alias 'projects' Active Directory operation failed on DC.cppe.local. • Need help with MS Access 07 & Reports

  Hey there, I'm finding it difficult to get MS reporting working to what I'd like to show. What I'm trying to do is: a) In my database store a URL file (HTTP external file), that is a .jpeg. I'd like to use that URL to call the image on the report sheet. I have tried to use 'Control source' on the data panel, but with no success. Any way I can get Dynamic Images to show up on each database. Also, I have a couple of Relational Databases. One Defines Values: For Example: DefinePets('petID','Name of Pet') The other one links the Main DB with the 'DefinePets' database. Eg: connect('petID','mainID','extraFeild') I'd like my report to Go into the "connect" Table, where the the currently viewed Record Value = mainID, then find petID and return Name of Pet. There is a many to many link between definePets and the main Table. (Therefore connect is joining them up) Or is that too much to ask from a simple package like Access? Thanks.

• Volume licenced copy of MS Office 2007 shows "Non Commercial Use" in title bar

  I have just removed the demo copy of Office 2007 preinstalled on a new laptop and replaced it with an install of the full professional edition downloaded from the MS Volume Licensing site and installed one of our volume licence keys, yet the apps (Word etc.) show "Non Commercial Use" in the title bar, which is what usually happens in the Home and Student edition. I have tried: Deleting the Office registration keys in the registry and using one of our other Office 2007 volume licence keys (we have 7) when prompted to re-register Uninstalling Office completely and reinstalling it from a newly-downloaded ISO burned to CD and also from a compressed file that installs from hard disk/USB stick (both from Microsoft - no dodgy stuff) Yet the non-commercial message persists. Although it's a cosmetic issue, the laptop is going to be used for customer presentations and so the sales person is rightly concerned about the image this portrays. I presume there may be something floating around the registry or in a file somewhere but I can't find it. Articles I have found elsewhere just refer to the message being related to the use of a Home and Student licence key, which is 100% not the case. Any thoughts? Thanks.

• Custom MS-DOS / FreeDOS

  Goal : Build a custom DOS to boot into. To automate tasks like formating a drive, or doing recovery. I've been using Grub4DOS to boot into these images. So far I've looking into taking a windows repair disk ISO and extracting. I can't seem to find the autoexec.bat in the disk. I really don't know where to look for the startup configuration file to change or how to add an autoexec.bat. I've tried MS-DOS 6.22. But it lacks the diskpart tool I require. I've tried extracting the images and adding it. Then I got a boot failed. I assume that after i added it. All the files when to lower case names and I assume that the OS is case sensitive. Then I've looking into using FreeDOS. But I don't know how it works at all. Partially because I can't seem to grasp the help/wiki's information. I looked into getting a bearbones release with just the kernel and I think it's the config.sys file. But I don't have any idea on how the packaging system works to incorporate diskpart into it. So really I'm in general looking for a small bootable DOS to where I can incorporate diskpart and setup an autoexec.bat for the actual function to carry out and to boot into. Thanks :) This is just for personal use also.
