    I need to exchange encrypted messages with another party. These would be in the form of email like communication (not instant chat). The solution needs to be portable (USB stick). I've tried "Portable Thunderbird/Enigmail/Gnupg/Hotmail account" but it's just impossible to setup portable, countless meaningless error messages. Anyway, I would prefer something more straightforward. Notes: We won't know each others IP addresses. Our computers will often be switched off. Encryption would ideally be using a common password. Is there a solution to this?

  • Single computer on network cannot connect to internet.

    Hi All, I hope you can help me out! :) I have 3 computers and one device (Xbox) on my home network; 2 running XP and one on Vista. The computer that can't connect to the internet (XP) is old and failing, and shows no warning before it completely runs out of battery. Thus today, I started it up forgetting that I had unplugged it the night before, and it just ran out of battery entirely whilst I was using it and died. I think that before this I had been browsing the internet, but I can't remember for certain. (i.e. The problem I am having may or may not have been caused by this 'hard' power off). Anyway, now when I start the computer up it takes 5-10 minutes after logging on to display the start bar and icons. Also, I cannot browse the internet. The computer seems to connect to the network OK (I have tried both wired and wireless), but I can't visit sites and can't ping web addresses. Pinging the router fails, as does pinging another of my computers on the network. I have never encountered something like this before, and whilst I am no noob I am also not a sysadmin, haha. :( Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time. P.S. I have tried a system restore (newbie move?).

    I have a small problem. I have shared keys setup on my domain, so I never type my password to login anymore. I've forgotten my password now. This is a problem because only my user can sudo. Password authentication for root has been disabled, so without my password, I cannot do maintenance on my web server. Is there a way to reset my password as my [now only] key-authenticated user? Specifically, can this be done on CentOS 4?

    I have an audiobook that I have ripped and I need some help constructing chapters. I have already made some cue sheets TITLE "Bookname" PERFORMER "the Author" FILE "File1.FLAC" wave ; 23971906.667 milliseconds TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "_Intro" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "CH 01" INDEX 01 24:15:50 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "CH 02" INDEX 01 66:21:00 TRACK 04 AUDIO TITLE "CH 03" INDEX 01 87:05:00 The audio book is in two files. The chapter at the end of the first file is continued in the second file. However, the second file restates: The publisher Book Title List item Blah blah blah I would like to merge the two 'halves' of the chapter in one seamless track. The only way I can think to do this would be be: Bulk cut down the tracks. Drop the junk info into junk track Continue the track listings as normal Take the two "halves" of the target chapter and build a separate cue sheet for it. I know there has to be an easier way. I am ok with making the 'junk' info a 'gap' or something. These are are FLAC files that will be converted to MP3 for my phone and other potable devices. I have read the primers on cue sheets, but I am just not getting it.

    I played with avconv on Ubuntu and I'm now able to e.g. record the desktop with sound from a soundcard. One thing I wanted to do was recording two video inputs at the same time, for instance the desktop and from the webcam. I thought about doing something like this: avconv \ -f alsa \ -i default \ -acodec flac \ -f video4linux2 \ -r 6 \ -i /dev/video0 \ -f x11grab \ -i :0.0 \ out.mkv My thinking was that if you define multiple video inputs, and the .mkv format can handle multiple video streams, avconv will encode 2 video streams and 1 audio stream into one file.   • Clonezilla multiple disks restore to single disk

    I have a clonezilla image from a machine that had 3 seperate disks (one partition per disk). I want to know if I can restore that image to another computer that has a hard drive that's much larger than the original, but only has one drive. Clonezilla is stating that it can't do this automatically, and perhaps I should try cnvt-ocs-dev but I've no idea what that means (Google is less than forthcoming with information about it too). Ok so I found out what cnvt-ocs-dev is, and that allows me to move source/destination targets between physical disks, but it doesn't seem to be able to move the partition as well.

I get data sent to me and it looks like this: a 1 a 2 2 a 3 3 b 1 b 2 2 b 3 3 b 4 4 b 5 5 b 6 6 and I need it to look like this: a 1 2 2 3 3 b 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 6 6 I have about 30 columns that need to move to the top value in their group, then removing the duplicates (to which there are about 33 rows of duplicates, trying to get it down to about 8 rows).     My father-in-law usually creates his newsletters pre-'booked' -- that is, two columns with the pages in the right place such that you can print and staple the newsletter. Unfortunately, this month we're using a printer that wants an un-booked PDF -- with one page per page, in the right order. I can re-order pages easily enough, but is there any way to take a PDF which is essentially 2-up and split the pages?

  • Why is a single thread spread across CPU's?

    I'm just curious why the scheduler constantly moves an app between CPUs, rather than keeping it on one. It looks a bit silly to have 4 cores at 25% rather than one at 100%. Does it has to do with heat, or is it more efficient somehow? Do other OS's do it differently? Insights or links to in-depth stuff would be nice. (Couldn't find much myself.) Update: By "spread out" I don't mean that it executes on several cpu's at once, but is being moved from one to the other several times per second, making the effect that it looks spread out.

    I've got an idea for x.org/$randomwindowmanager in combination with a multiheaded setup, but I haven't figured out how it should work. Also I don't really know where to place the feature request. Now for the idea. I've been working with screen (wikipedia:GNU_Screen) for some years now. One thing I like about it, is the fact that I can get a multi-display mode (screen -x), so you can have multiple terminals all connected to the same screen. The fun thing about it, is that you can get 2 terminals with the same content and switch my onscreen layout, without moving the terminals. I admit, in screen it's not extremely useful, but I think for a wm it can be. Imagine this. You've got two monitors and 4 workdesks. On one workdesk I've got my IDE with code, on the second one I've got the output, on the third one I've got the documentation and on the forth one I've got my e-mail and IM clients. At one moment, I want my IDE and output on my monitors, another moment my code and documentation and Yet another moment my IM to consult a colleague and documentation or code. Finally my colleague comes to help me at my desk. I'd like it if we could both watch the same workdesk without him sitting on my lap, so I turn one monitor so he can see it better. It would be great if we could see the same thing that's on my monitor (exclude mousepointer). The thing with most WMs is that your workspaces on the two monitors are either separated or glued together. If they're separated, you can change workspaces on each monitor autonomous, but you can't exchange applications between monitors because they're different x-clients (iirc). If they're glued together (xinerama), you can exchange the applications, but when changing your workspace, the other monitors change too. So, what I'd like to know is this. Is this already possible or should I submit a feature request somewhere (and if so, where?)

  • Cant register this user

    I wanted to ask this question on meta, but it said, I have to log in first (which is where I have the problem!) I answered a question with this user. But when I tried to register and click on the stack exchange icon, it only displays three dots (animated) and never comes back. I suspected a firefox problem so I tried firefox on windows: And yes, I was able to create an account linked with my other accounts ( http://unix.stackexchange.com/users/27867/holgero and http://stackoverflow.com/users/1779245/holgero ) when I ran the latest firefox version under windows 7 in a virtual box. Then I upgraded my linux firefox to the newest version and deleted the other account under windows again. But still I cannot register this account ( http://superuser.com/users/177338/holgero ). On unix.stackexchange or stackoverflow I never had any problems with the registration, superuser seems to be different. So, how do I register this user and have it linked with my other stackexchange accounts?

    I have been trying to create an FTP server on my new Server 2008. I have been following both (very detailed and highly published here guides) For setting up using IIS Manager http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/321/configure-ftp-with-iis-7-manager-authentication/ and For anonymous FTP http://www.trainsignaltraining.com/windows-server-2008-ftp-iis7 I am able to log as an anonymous user. My need is to use a named user, so I need to use the IIS Manager. I get error 530 when trying to log as a user. Connected to 127.0.0.1. 220 Microsoft FTP Service User (127.0.0.1:(none)): ftpmanager 331 Password required for ftpmanager. Password: 530-User cannot log in. Win32 error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. Error details: Filename: Error: 530 End Login failed. ftp> I can not learn from this message anything. My password is set to: 1234 (so I don't think I make a mistake here - testing purposes only ofc) Thank you. Note - I went over other posts on SE that I read, and couldn't get the result: IIS7 Windows Server 2008 FTP -> Response: 530 User cannot log in. FTP Error 530, User cannot log in, home directory inaccessible. Having trouble setting up FTP server on Windows Server 2008 EDIT I think I found some errors with the physical path. Going to Basic settings, and Test Connection on the physical path, gave me the following error: The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path. However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the built-in account has access. Make sure that the application pool identity has Read access to the physical path. If this server is joined to a domain, and the application pool identity is NetworkService or LocalSystem, verify that \$ has Read access to the physical path. Then test these settings again. I am not sure which/whom should get access to the Root folder !? I want to point out, I managed to login with a domain user (change authorization and authentication methods) but this is NOT the requested solution. I checked to make sure that the FTP, folders, access is working properly. I am bit lost here. ==== More tries: I have enabled another Allow rule for ALL Users. I still get the same error. It seems that it doesn't matter if i use a correct or wrong password, I still get Error 530.

Terminology is the E17 default terminal, and it have a great command, $ tyls with is a "graphical" $ ls I want to create an alias just for this terminal, because the command "tyls" don't make sense to konsole, rxvt or other terminals. I'm thinking in some kind of "if" in ~/.bash_profile to test if I'm on terminology and then run the following command: alias ls="tyls" But how can I test if I'm in terminology but not xterm? Can someone help me? Thanks!

    I am having difficulty on our ubuntu server whereby I have an SSH user that when I create files using this user the ownership is web_user:www-data The problem is when a file is uploaded or created using a content management system like joomla. When files are uploaded through Joomla - such as components / modules... The ownership is set to www-data:www-data This means that I need to then chown all new files to web_user:www-data so we can edit the files. Is there a way to set for a directory and sub-directories that all new files created have the ownership of web_user:www-data? Do I need to use something like setuid or setgid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Fix single entry from mbr

    I use EasyBCD to manage my tripleboot of (1) Windows Server 2008 R2, (2) Windows 7 Professional and (3) Ubuntu Linux. While trying to change the order of my boot menu I ended up losing the Windows Server entry. Luckily I had a boot menu backup (.bcd file) that allowed me to restore my boot menu using EasyBCD. However, when I now select the Windows Server option in my boot menu the Windows Server Recovery Environment starts up. So I have to select language/keyboard layout/etc. and then I have 3 options as shown in the image below. . My goal is to fix the one corrupted Windows Server entry from my boot menu without messing up or losing the two other ones. I'm guessing the Recovery Console (Command Prompt) is the next step and that I will be needing bootrec.exe. But when consulting this page: Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows (about half way down there's a link that shows the bootrec.exe options) I'm getting uncertain. The page lists 4 options for bootrec.exe : /FixMbr /FixBoot /ScanOs /RebuildBcd What option do I need to fix just the server entry of my boot menu? Thanks in advance, Sander P.S. All three OS's are on the same physical disk (3 different partitions).     We have a SharePoint Services 3.0 site set up supporting about 300 users right now. This report is isolated and has never been duplicated. We have one AD user who cannot log into the SharePoint site with his account from his machine and is subsequently returned a 401.1 error. If any other user tries to log on with their account from his machine, it works okay. If he moves to another machine and logs on, it works okay. The only solution to this point has been to install FireFox on the machine. When he authenticates with FF, everything is okay. Remedies tried so far: Cleared cookies/cache Turned off/on Integrated Windows Authentication in IE Downgraded IE 8 to IE 6 Removed site from Intranet Sites zone Renamed the machine Disjoined/Rejoined Domain

  • Windows 7 default VPN - Single Click to Connect

    The default way to connect to a VPN (standard includedd MS client) seems to be to click on the network icon in the system tray to expand it, then pick the VPN connection, and click the connect button. This brings up a dialog where you can enter your username and password. I have told the VPN connection to remember my credentials. Is there some way I can skip that dialog and just have it connect? I have tried using rasdial.exe, and I can connect as long as I pass the username and password as arguments. It doesn't seem to want to use the stored credentials for some reason, maybe I need to store them with an elevated account.

  • VPN ipsec tunnel from router to single windows server computer (gateway-to-host)

    Firstly, is this possible? The situation: 2 different ISP's. One has several servers and a firewall running. The other is limited to only one virtual server with one network card running windows server 2008r2. I need to set up a site-to-site style VPN using IPsec between the firewall of one ISP and the windows host on the other (gateway-to-host). This host has to run a SQL-Server that I can access from the other ISP's servers through the VPN tunnel. It seems looking at the RFC for IPsec that this should be possible using the features of Windows 2008, but I can't get it to work so far... It seems that I can't access any services running on the same computer or IP address used as the tunnel endpoint? Thanks Chris
